55 problems related to brakes failed have been reported for the 2008 Toyota Prius. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/28/2021

Hi I have a 2004-2009 Prius that experienced a brake actuator failure. Come to find out this is a recalled part, I would love to speak to someone about getting this remedied as it is a $3,000 fix.

2 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2021

Tl the contact owns a 2008 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact depressed the brake pedal which failed to stop the vehicle in a reasonable amount of time. The contact attempted to drive the vehicle until the vehicle came to a complete stop. The vehicle was towed to folsom lake Toyota (200 plaza dr, folsom, CA 95630, (916)355-1500) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the brake actuator failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

3 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2020

Tl the contact owns a 2008 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced brake failure and was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the abs module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 173,600.

4 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2020

When turning the car on, while in park, the car lunges forward with the brake pedal fully depressed. The abs actuator/modulator is constantly whirring. Several dash lights are illuminated simultaneously (abs vsc, e-brake, !). My dealer says that this is a common Prius problem that can result in complete failure of braking capability and that the repair is $3,500. According to my service advisor, another customer of central florida Toyota was scheduled for this repair when his brakes failed and his car was totaled. This seems like a very serious safety issue, and is documented on owner forums as a common problem for Prius'. My car has been doing this for a couple weeks now, and realizing how serious is it has prompted me to schedule the repair at my local dealership. I am a nursing home administrator and I rely on this car for my 100 mile commutes.

5 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2019

The brake actuator failed. The brakes started stopping abruptly while driving and would also be on slowing the car down while I was driving. Ifound out that Toyota was making this repair at no cost up until January 2018. My issue is that the vehicle has been registered to me since 2013. My complaint is that Toyota knew the brake actuator was an issue on this model but failed to notify me to correct it even though they had my contact information during the time that it was being fixed for free.

6 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2019

My brake actuator failed causing loss of breaks. This is a public safety issue. I live in los angeles where these cars are all over the roads. I am 6 months past the 10-year restriction on the warranty enhancement zg1. The cost to repair and replace this is $2,200. Toyota issued this "warranty enhancement" to almost 800,000 cars. Why is this not a safety recall yet? Toyota should not be able to get away with this lack of concern for safety of their customers, other dirvers on the road, and their customer service regarding this issue has been a horrible experience.

7 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2019

Second generation Toyota Prius (model years 04-09, an estimated 669,700 vehicles, Toyota highlander 06 ~66,200 vehicles (and Lexus models~196,000 vehicles) have a known defective brake power booster known as brake actuator assembly. Toyota published TSB 0032-16. The brakes fail. Toyota denied to remove the known faulty part in 2016 because the part had not established symptoms yet and vehicle was over 175,000 miles. 5/24/2019 while in motion on interstate 77, the yellow anti-lock brake system abs, the electronic variable speed control vsc (traction) , the electronic controlled brake alert lamps illuminate. The hybrid propulsion system fails because the power brakes do not regenerate electricity to charge the hybrid battery fuel cells. Turning the hybrid vehicle into a plain gas powered vehicle with faulty brakes. The power brake system creates a thumping vibration sound due to the pressure inside the actuator is not retaining/holding pressure. I asked local o'reily's to scan vehicle, reading codes brake actuator failure. Reported to Toyota dealership 5/30/2019 with yellow warning lamps engaged and with knowledge of codes. Charged $150. 09 to verify codes that I retrieved in 3 minutes and estimate $2938. 47 to replace known faulty part. I contacted Toyota national -1906030924. Toyota needs to own this recall. Recall the faulty part known to fail in 2016. Toyota aware of part failure, to such extent, Toyota discontinued this brake actuator and redesigned for generation 3 2010-. Toyota has updated the replacement part with new part #s. How many vehicles are currently on highways with this known faulty system, endangering all vehicles in proximity? this is a national issue. A safety issue. Needs immediate attention, please. I purchased new updated part, drove to tampa, florida to have installed by professional installer.

8 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2019

Brake actuator failure. TSB released in 2017. My vehicle was over stated mileage limit (150,000), and was not showing any ill effects of the 2017 Toyota repair at no cost. I am driving along us 77 and on this 4 lane major highway, the power assist brakes fail. Now 204780 miles 5/2019 and the emergency brake, abs,vsc and brake warning lamps illuminate and the power brakes are no longer functioning. Codes c1256 and c1391. The dealer estimate is $2938. 47. Toyota has a TSB from 2017, and without repair, the vehicle is useless. A major part failure, safety recall needs to be issued. This is the most popular most sold hybrid vehicle line, and has a known system failure. Known since 2017. This is an unsafe vehicle with a brake actuator failure.

9 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2019

There was brake actuator failure in my car which due to part failure. Toyota did not issue a recall but instead a warranty enhancement. To me, this seems ridiculous since Toyota did not notify owners and I was not aware of the problem until I experienced the problem and luckily was not in an accident. We misses the cut off for the warranty by a few months. This unexpected expense seems is a huge financial burden to my family for a safety issue I feel Toyota should morally cover. Are they waiting for someone to be injured due to this problem?.

10 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2019

We have a 2008 Prius hybrid. **brake acentuator has failed** when the brake pedal is applied, the vehicle continues to move and then the vehicle suddenly stops (without notice). I took the vehicle to the dealership and was informed of the recall. Appreciate your support. Due to a class action suit against Toyota for this problem, they extented the warranty. Apparantly I fall out of the date specified. This is a problem where thousands of vehicles are on the road with an identified issue. Toyota does not want to assist me in any way. As a veteran with 100% disability, I am requesting for this issue to be reopened immediately, and assist owners correct a extremely dangerous safety problem. This problem is costing close to $3000. 00 for repair. My contact information: raymond gabaldon raymond. P. Gabaldon@gmail. Com (571) 331-4204 or (703) 492-4462.

11 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2019

Toyota extended the abs module warranty for a known issue, but we were never notified therefore it expired. Now the abs accumulator has failed and Toyota wants $3-4k for the repairs even though this is a common problem from factory that can cause brakes to fail.

12 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2018

I was working as a delivery driver lucky for me I just turned in to a gated community and had to stop. Went past gate tried to break and couldn't stop tell I floored the break petal. It took so long to stop if I had been doing 45 mph I'd never stopped in time looks to be the brake actuator failed I see this a lot with the Prius. Something needs to be done. I could have goten seriously hurt and it's a big safety flaw.

13 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2018

In bumper to bumper traffic the brakes failed to stop the car when approaching a traffic light. It bumped the vehicle in front at a low speed without injuries or damage.

14 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2018

Brake actuator failing (warning lights on, clunking sound when depressing brake, increased force to apply brakes) two months after extended "service campaign" ended. Had a recall been issued I would have been notified there was a technical problem that needs to be fixed. A known technical issue that affects a vehicle's brakes and anti- locking braking system should result in a recall.

15 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2018

Brake, abs, vsc, ! with circle around it, and a solid high pitch alarm came on while driving and when coming to a red light at 55mph, I noticed my brakes had failed. This had almost caused me an accident by running into the back end of another car. Thankfully I had my foot and the brake peddle pressed almost through the firewall as was able to stop. This is not a hazard, this is extremely dangerous for any Prius driven like this.

16 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2018

Brake actuator failed but the warranty expired less than 2 months ago. It's a $2000+ cost to replace the part. I want Toyota to pay for it because it was their shoddy assembly that caused it. There are so many complaints on Priuschat and whatnot.

17 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2018

Toyota brake system failure in January 2018. This issue resulted in an accident and is a critical safety problem. Toyota is aware of this problem and are unwilling to correct the issue.

18 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2017

My 2008 Prius (67,500 miles) regularly serviced at the Toyota dealer had a catastrophic brake failure while I was going in reverse down my drive way . I have done the same maneuver every day for more than 20 years in this driveway and never had a problem. As the brakes failed I attempted to pump the brake pedal more to no avail. The car crossed the street and went in the neighbor yard across from my driveway. The car is totaled and I believe it was a complete brake failure that caused the accident. I would like Toyota to compensate me for the total loss of my car.

19 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/22/2017

The brake actuator is failing. It has a constant pumping sound that indicates this part is failing. This seems to be a known problem for many gen 2 Prius owners. Toyota had a campaign to replace this part but I was never notified of it. Had I been notified I would have taken my car in for service.

20 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2013

When I brake and also go over a bump my 2008 Prius lurches forward. The traction control light illuminates. The brakes become ineffective. This caused me to have an accident last night. The cars before me came to a sudden stop. I was driving 15-20mph but unfortunately I hit the brakes while unknowningly simultaneously going over a bump. The faulty traction control system sent me into a 1-2 second lurch forward with zero brakes. When I finally was able to have brakes I had to maneuver the vehicle to the left of the car ahead scratching the aura and denting my front right panel. This is not the first time the brakes have failed but it is the first time I was involved in an accident because of it. Toyota drivers need to leave a 4 sec. Space between cars to make up for the 2 sec. Lapse in brakes.

21 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2013

The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Prius. The contact sated that while driving less than 10 mph on a wet road surface, the brakes failed to respond when engaged and went straight to the floor. In addition, the brake pedal became stuck to the floorboard when depressed. The contact was able to coast to the shoulder where the brake pedal was released. The vehicle resumed normally and was later taken to the dealer, who advised that the battery failed and caused the brake actuator to fail. The dealer replaced the battery. The failure and current mileage was 61,000. Updated 02/11/2014 the consumer stated there was no resistance and the pedal did not get stuck, but it had no effect in stopping the vehicle. After several seconds, the consumer coasted to the shoulder at which time, the brakes started to work. Also, the battery was replaced. A month after the incident, the instrument cluster failed again, with no warning lights and it had to be replaced.

22 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/23/2013

Tl-the contact owns a 2008 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while the driver drove down hill at 30mph the brake failed to engage. The contact had to steer the vehicle into ditch to avoid a crash. There was no warning light. The manufacturer was not made a ware of the failure. The vehicle was towed to a towyard. There was injury to report. The failure and current mileage was 100,000. Li.

23 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2012

The car warnings went on and displayed the symbol for brake systems failure. The car brakes went out and then the car sped up slightly until the brakes re-engaged. I was driving slowly and was near my home, so no one was hurt thankfully. We had to have it towed because the car manual said not to drive it more than 3 mph when you have a brake systems failure. It was determined that the defective parts were the electric water pump and the mechanical water pump. Toyota has recalled 2003-2007 electric water pumps for the Prius. My concern is that this could have been a tragic accident if we were going faster. My question is whether the 2008 electric water pump for the Prius need to be recalled?.

24 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2012

The contact owned a 2008 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the brakes failed, which caused the vehicle to crash into another vehicle. No injuries were reported. The vehicle was destroyed at the scene and towed away to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed that the brakes functioned properly and there was no failure. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the failure was the contact¿s fault. No assistance was offered. The failure and current mileages were 50,000. The VIN was unavailable.

25 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2011

While entering a highway onramp in my company's 2008 Toyota Prius, the car suddenly began accelerating out of control without application of the gas pedal. I had to press hard on the brake just to hold the car at 65 mph. The car was surging and lunging forward, and I worried I wouldn't be able to find a place to pull over before losing control completely. For the next 5-10 minutes, as I approached traffic in front of me, the car continued to accelerate, even though I had my foot on the brake the entire time. At one point I noticed the car was reaching speeds in excess of 95 mph. A loud rattling noise ensued and an electrical smell filled the car. Eventually, the brake completely failed to have any effect, and, barreling down the highway at 90 mph, I put the car in neutral, but it continued to accelerate. At this point I had my right foot on the brake pedal and depressed the parking break all the way to the floor with my left foot, this slowed the car slightly, but not enough to regain control. Finally, I turned the car off completely, and with my hazard lights on, managed to pull the car away from traffic and off on the shoulder of the highway, where I coasted for a long distance, speeds decreasing gradually until eventually it stopped. Smoke and a burning electrical smell filled the car. I filed a police report with an officer who happened to also be on the shoulder, giving someone a speeding ticket. My company towed the car to a dealership, and an investigation is supposedly underway, though I'm not optimistic about any sort of resolution based on the testimonies I have read from others who have experienced the same thing. Luckily, in my case, this didn't result in an accident, and noone was killed.

26 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2010

July 16th our son was driving his 2008 Prius when the brakes failed and there was acceleration with the car. He rearended an SUV at a stop light. We took the vehicle to the Toyota dealership where we purchased the car. They were going to check it out, but due to the fact of an accident, they had our son call Toyota to give them a report of what happened. Toyota said they would send a rep. To examine the car, which they would not be there for 2 weeks. We waited and they finally arrived around August 4th or 5th. The dealership called and said we could come and get the car, which I was concerned not knowing if there was defect or not. The Toyota dealership told us Toyota takes all responsibility out of their hands. I felt that was ridiculous since they sell Toyota vehicles. On August 12th our son called Toyota and they said that there would be a letter coming in about 35 days. We are still waiting and feel the dealership and Toyota has done nothing but pass the buck. We also purchased another Prius at the same time. By the way they both told my son in the beginning that there had been a recall. After everything that happened our son realized that there were several other incidents that took place with the car and thought it was him, until this accident happened. We feel that there is also an electrical issue with this car because there has 2 new batteries installed in the car since purchased in 2008. We just want answers!!!!! there was $1800 dollars damage sustained with this accident. It seems to me that no one here wants to take responsibility with some answers.

27 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2010

I have a 2008 Toyota Prius that we purchased new in April of 08. On March 19th I was driving in heavy stop and go traffic on a street with construction panels on parts of surface. I was leaving a car length in front of me. When the car ahead stopped, I applied the brakes and nothing happened. The car kept going and crashed into the rear end of the car ahead. No one hurt but damage to bumper and hood of my car. Took the car to the dealership next morning. Toyota rep looked over it, ran diagonstic codes and said nothing was wrong with the car. I know the brakes failed. We have lost confidence in the car and Toyota service.

28 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Prius. While traveling at a speed of 25 mph the contact attempted to apply the brakes and noticed that they would not engage. When the brakes failed to stop the vehicle the contact crashed into a curb which caused the vehicle to stop. The VIN was not available. There were no injuries or need to file a police report. The failure mileage was 15,000 and the current mileage was 15,500.

29 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2010

Second accident caused by brake failure with acceleration. 2008 Prius in stop and go traffic driving in battery (brake)mode about 10-15 mph. Car in front slowed down, I hit the brake and the car accelerated slightly. I look to be sure my foot was on the brake pedal and it was and then rear ended the car in front. Car in front move forward but Prius wouldn't stop and started to accelerate again so I pushed on the parking brake with my left foot and slowed it down for the second impact. Car in front then drove slowly to a parking lot and the Prius kept moving so I drove it into the parking lot and when it slowed going up the ramp I pushed the parking button stopping the car. I then restarted it and released the parking brake to move further into the parking lot. 4 people injured, 3 seriously. A similar incident occurred 29 September 2008 when driving on cruise control at 26 mph the Prius suddenly turned left hitting a parked car. The video shows I was trying to counter steer hard right. Skid marks showed the left front wheel stopped and the car pivoted on it with acceleration marks from the right front tire.

30 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2010

I own a 2008 Toyota Prius. When we drive over a bump/pothole it feels as if the brakes fail for approx. A second and a half or so. And the vehicle lurches forward. It is a very unsettling feeling. It has happened several times.

31 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2010

Low speed brake failure resulting in crashing into car in front. Impact speed about 10-15mph. Damage to car >$2800. Stood on the brake and the car would not stop as it should. Updated 03/12/10.

32 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2010

Toyota Prius 2008 less serious - frequent release or lapse of braking by abs (assumed) on irregular roadway small cracks seem to confuse system with significant forward travel of vehicle before brakes reengage. Similar to my earlier 2005 model but more frequent occurrences and longer lapse in pad rotor contact during braking. Most serious brakes failed almost 10 seconds. Travel on wet slushy highway for 2 hours on 55 mph road with uphill grade and slight turn to right driver applied light brake pressure attempting to time deceleration to controlled intersection for green light. Application of brakes slowed vehicle no more then uphill coast, firmer pressure to no effect, full hard pressure no effect, slight release and full slam, no immediate effect, finally abs stuttered/pulsed and stop vehicle.

33 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2010

The issue that has been reported on Toyota Prius brakes failing to work on bumpy roads extends beyond the 2010 model year. I own a 2008 Prius and know another person as well who have experienced the exact same problem with our cars when braking on bumpy roads. The Toyota complaint line does not answer anymore due to the volume of calls (says the message), so I am reporting it here.

34 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2010

Last night while driving home in light rain on a smooth, straight road a very loud alarm began to sound and a red "brake" light lit up on the instrument panel and the brakes felt like they were failing. The steering also became very stiff. The alarm did not stop until I had pulled over and used the emergency brake to stop and turned the engine off completely. I took the car to the dealership where I was told that it was driver error for driving with one foot on the gas and one on the brake at the same time, which is absurd. It was also implied that I had "imagined" this frightening emergency due to the recent problems in the news with the 2010 brakes on the Prius. That is also completely false. I had never even considered my car might have a brake failure until it happened as nothing had ever happened before this incident. I left the dealership in tears and afraid to drive my car with no hope of an answer because I was not believed. They even said that there was no such loud alarm that could go off on the 08 Prius. I was told that the code c1256 revealed, with 100% accuracy, that I had hit the brake and gas simultaneously 38 times! I explained that this could never have happened even once and was told that the computer is never wrong.

35 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2010

The brakes fail to work immediately and/or the car speed surges temporarily when braking on a bumpy surface, such as going over a pot hole. This started happening soon after I started driving the car and happens on a regular basis - the most recent being yesterday. At first, the short loss of control of vehicle speed concerned me, but I have come to expect it now when going over rough road at slow speeds. I started to think it was associated with the abs system and thought maybe it was supposed to work that way. But now, after hearing about the problems with the 2010 Prius, I thought you should know the same problem exists in earlier Prius models. This is a duplicate of a complaint filed earlier today under speed control. Since then I learned that maybe I should have filed this under brakes.
