Headlights are defective. I have changed the relay switch, computer hid and headlights and they still are not working. I've also had to pay a ticket as a result.

Headlights intermittently fail. Sometimes one headlight will go out and other times both. So far, if I detect one or both headlights are out, turning the headlight switch off and back on will correct the problem. Depending on street lighting, I am not always able to detect if the headlights are off until another car flashes to let me know or I enter a dark roadway where it becomes obvious.

Similar to this complaint (NHTSA id number:11268053) I have been struggling to keep both of my headlights working for over a year now. I have tried replacing the lightbulbs and the ballasts without success. Both the regular lights and the high beams turn off about every couple of minutes and sometimes faster. I drive with one hand on the switch and constantly turn them off then back on in order to get where I am going. Please help! I am intending to go to the Toyota dealer but it is expensive and I believe this is a flaw in the vehicle. This problem occurs regardless of whether the car is in motion or not.
Head lights randomly go out without warning. Turn switch of then on and they go back on for awhile. Sometimes one headlight. Sometimes other or both. Not safe when driving in dark and lights disappear in mountains on vacation at night!!!.

Right front headlight occasionally goes out. Sometimes it works when I switch the lights on and off and on again but mostly it has me driving down the street at night with only the left headlight visible. I'm scared to drive at night, knowing that my right headlight will most likely act up again. I even took everything apart trying to get to this headlight to change the bulb but found that the current bulb was working fine. Please do something!!! I cannot stress how important it is to have working headlights and I definitely don't want to get pulled over by a cop and issued a ticket!!.
The headlights will suddenly fail, either one at a time, or more recently both at the same time when night driving. I am able to flip the switch to turn one back on but now the passenger light will not come back on at all. I am driving at night when I notice this happening but it probably also happens in day light.
Headlight go out daily and happens while driving at night from work, they turn back on switch on and off.

When driving at night, headlights will go out on their own, left, right, or both at same time. Have to turn light switch off and on till they come back on. Driving on road or highway. Smooth road. So now I can't drive after dark.
Headlights intermittently go out while driving. Immediately will come back on when switched off and then on. .

Headlights are intermittent. Sometimes left, sometimes right, sometimes both will turn off. So far, turning the the switch off then back on cures the problem, but only temporarily.
Headlight, drivers side, will go out occasionally while driving. It will come on again if the headlight switch is turned off then on.
Headlights intermittently go out when driving at night. The vehicle is in motion on an interstate or even a 2 way highway. I am able to use light switch to turn off and turn on again, but will happen again while driving. Have not repaired as of yet, but have read about several issues of this sort with this model. Have stopped driving at night because of these issues. This has been getting worse every time I drive this vehicle. Started with 1 headlight, now it is both.
The headlights on my Prius sometimes don't come on or may come on and turn off while I'm driving. It's usually the driver's side, but the passenger's side has done it once. If I notice it, I can usually turn off the lights and turn them back on and then they both work. It has happened both when I first turn on the lights (while stationary) and also when I have been driving for a few minutes. The problem is becoming more frequent. Hitting bumps or pressing connectors has no effect. It does not appear to be a loose connection. The bulbs work fine after cycling the switch. This has happened multiple times.
The headlights go dim and /or shut off as I am driving. This problem usually starts with the right headlight shutting off and sometimes both will go dim or shut off completely. Both lights work initially on startup and shine bright at first but immediately dim to a lower level and then as I drive they will dim or the right light will turn off or sometimes both turn off all together. They will come back on if I turn off and back on the headlight switch.
Headlights (low-beam) turned off randomly while driving at night. Flicking light switch off and back on usually turned lights back on. Flicking on brights and then back to low didn't help.
I was driving at night on back roads when both headlights went out. I stopped the car, turned it off and restarted it to see what would happen. The lights did not go on, however, I found that if I held the switch up as though I was turning on high beams, the high beams worked. I could not get the low beams to work. I was taking someone home and stopped at their house. When I came back to the car and turned it on, the lights worked normally.

When driving on the interstate in the dark, both my headlights went out. Luckily they came back on after I turned the switch off and back on.
I had the dealer check driver side light, said it was good. After very recently purchasing my pre-owned Prius I did a night test drive. The driver side headlight would dim then go out. During a nighttime emergency, all the lights went out while traveling a back country road, I flipped the switch and they came back on, only to go off again while traveling the highway, flipped switch again to turn on again. Upon investigating the problem, I found this is an ongoing problem. Why is there no recall??????? this is extremely dangerous and scary!!!!!!!! this is happening every time headlights are on and in motion!!!!!!!! recall now!!!!!!!.
The headlights keep burning out one at a time, typically about 1-2 weeks after replace the other side. Tried switching to a better brand, same issue. Tried switching to led, even they burned out after 2 months.

The headlights might go off when I have them on. Sometimes on the drivers side sometimes on the passenger side. If I turn the headlights on and off they will come back on. Sometimes this happens a couple of times in a 1/2 trip sometimes it does not happen at all. A loose connection does not seem to be the problem because I can go over bumps and the lights don't flicker or go off. There is no rhyme or reason, I will just be driving and a headlight will go off and will come back on if I turn the headlight switch off the back to on.
I have replaced my headlights twice and they still will go out. They switch from passenger to drivers side headlights going out. They go out while driving on the highway which is extremely dangerous. I have spent over $400 trying to fix this safety problem with no solution so far.
My passenger side headlight bulb goes off suddenly and I have to switch it off and on and it will back on for some time and goes off again. I paid $ to replace the headlight bulb and after couple of months the problem arise again and this time it's ballast failure which I still didn't fix due to high cost. I need help if Toyota can look into this issue which deals with our driving safety.
Over the course of my ownership of the past 3 years, I have replaced 3 headlights, due to broken/faulty seals that allow moisture into the housing, and burning out the ballast which in my opinion is a design flaw as the ballast rests at the bottom of the headlight assembly. I currently am dealing with a right headlight that goes out and I need to turn the switch off and on for the light to return briefly. The headlamp assembly is about $250 plus labor costs of installation.

My Toyota Prius is in good working order, as I just got it inspected for the NY state annual inspection on 3/23/2017. Last night, 4/2/2017, I drove my car to a restaurant and parked it there. When I got back into my car to leave after my meal, I turned on the ignition and switched the headlights to turn on while the car was stationary and parked, but both appeared to have burned out suddenly. Only the running lights switched on. To drive home, I had to use my high beams. I tried turning the car on and off, and switching the headlights on and off while the car was parked, idle and in motion to see if they'd turn back on, but they wouldn't. When I got home, I did some research and it seems that this is a long-standing problem for this model of car, as well as Priuses made in the years prior. . Read more...

The headlight just go off while driving. Once you turn the light switch off and then on they come back on for a short time. The dealer is wanting $1,400 to make the repairs. This is extremely dangerous while driving at night. There should be a recall on these vehicles.
I was driving home yesterday evening when both of my headlights went off. Unfortunately for me I was in the middle of going through a long curve in the road. I quickly turned off the headlight switch and then back on again. They did come back on but I nearly drove off the road going 45mph! could have had a serious accident due to the headlight failure. I can no longer take the risk of driving late at night when I need to due to this safety hazard!.
My 2008 Toyota Prius has hid headlamps. When the vehicle was still under warranty, aon of the headlamps went out, so I took it to Toyota, and they replaced the burned out headlamp and also replaced the other headlamp, saying that there was a problem with the headlamps, and the new headlamps should solve the problem. I had to replace another headlamp at about 80,000 miles, and the opposite side headlamp at about 90,000 miles. Since I replaced the last headlamp, the right one, it went out again, so I replaced it again. Now that same headlamp keeps going out, and then it goes back on, it doesn't appear to be heat related, as sometimes it is off when I first start the car and shortly thereafter, it comes on. If I flash the bright switch back and forth it makes no difference. It always seems to be the low beam. If I repeatedly flash the hi-low switch, eventually the low beam will go out, then if I turn the light switch off and on again, the low beam returns back on. I have replaced the lamp with one that I thought was burned out and the same thing happens. I have checked on line, and have read how people taking their Prius to the dealer are being charged from $300. 00 to $4000. 00 for changing various parts, and still are having the same problem. I have bee stopped by the police twice for having 1 headlight out, and I never know when it is going to be out. I have read of some people having the problem with both headlights, and know that it is an accident just waiting to happen. I have even tried to see if there was an option available to change the headlights from hid to halogen, but could not find any such option available. Since this seems to be a widespread problem, and an obvious safety issue, shouldn't Toyota step up and offer a solution? I would appreciate if this problem could be investigated. Thank you.
I got in my Prius about a month ago and turned the headlight switch on, and neitherof my low beam headlights worked. I thought it seemed odd that both lights went out at the same time. I purchased the most expensive bulbs at my local auto parts store and replace the bulbs. They worked great until about an hour ago. I started my car and when I turned the head lights on, both of them came on for a fraction of a second and then immediately went out. I had to drive home with my bright lights on. I started reading Prius forums and came to realize that hundreds of people with the same Prius model and year were having the same exact symptoms in thier cars. There's obviously an electrical problem with the 2010 Prius. It's time to issue a recall. Now I'm going to have to by another set of bulbs which will cost me another $60. Please help us. It's unfair that 100's of us have to suffer from such a flaw. Thanks.
Passenger headlight goes off intermittently. Turn switch off and on and comes on again. Have had bulb replaced x2 and now Toyota dealer says that Toyota has a bulletin about it. Note to the tune of $500 to fix. In researching this seems to be a common problem. It's a hazard at night or in rain or inclement weather and evidently something Toyota has had complaints about enough to put out a bulletin. Vehicle in motion, highway miles. I believe some sort of short but certainly not mechanic. This has been happening since January 2017. Two new bulbs plus labor and now told wiring mechanism. Help. If Toyota knows a problem, address it in a recall.
While driving the headlights will turn off. Most of the time it is the right headlight and at other times the right or both of them will go out. If I turn the light switch on the steering column off and then back on it will turn them on for a few seconds. When taken to the dealership they said there is no recall but there are plenty of complaints. I was pulled over by a police officer and they let me off with a warning to fix it. It turns off even while sitting in my driveway as well as while driving. There is no rhyme or reason as to when.
While driving in the dark my passenger side headlight went out. Then a few days later it switched to the driver side headlight going out. Now while driving at night they will go off at least 10 times on my 9 mile freeway drive. It is not safe!.
The right headlight intermittently goes out. It has happened upon start up, and while driving. It is usually noticed when sitting behind another vehicle (seeing headlight reflection in front vehicle's rear), someone tells me, or, I remember to check. When it's realized, turning the switch off, and on again, makes the light come back on. It doesn't appear to be any particular weather, situation, or length of drive that causes it. It started at least 1 and 1/2 years ago. It was first noticed 12/16/16.
My headlights are flickering before going completely out. Sometimes it's the left, sometimes the right. Turning the light switch off, then on, seems to rectify the issue but only temporarily. A very small % of the time would both lights go off completely. Again, turning light switch off, then on, fixes it temporarily. There is no exact timeframe in which the lights start to flicker. And sometimes I notice it happening when going over a bump, but that is not always the case.
2009 Toyota Prius passenger headlight goes off spontaneously while driving or stationary. When you turn off the headlight switch, then turn them on, the headlight turns back on for a while. Then after a while the headlight turns off again. This defect was a NHTSA recall and extended warranty problem but the dealer said the warranty and recall has expired. They want to charge me over $500 to fix this defect. Nhtsa needs to extend the recall and warranty because there have been accident deaths and injury related to this defect. You can see the defect documented on several youtube videos: Toyota Prius headlight failure. Please issue an order for dealers to recall and extend the warranty to fix this headlight defect at no cost to owners !!.
I noticed in the past month that the headlights turn off unexpectedly while driving. First the driver side then both headlights then the passenger side. They go back on when I turn the switch off and then on and the problem is unexpected and not reproducible. I was told at the dealer that the headlights needed to be replaced. They would not acknowledge there is any known issue with the headlights turning off by themselves. I replaced both headlights 2 days ago and will monitor the situation.
