Toyota Prius owners have reported 2,291 problems related to headlights (under the exterior lighting category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Prius based on all problems reported for the Prius.
Dashboard speedometer, fuel gauge, headlight indicators, transmission status, cruise control do not show, are not lit up. Backup camera does not work nor do the back-up lights. This occured after the auxiliary battery was replaced and the dashboard lights and backup camera will occassionally spontaneously return when the car has not been driven for a week or longer but then will go out next time the car is turned off. There are problems with the car turning off consistently and at times the start button needs to be manually depressed for 5+ seconds to shut down.

Right side headlight goes out intermittently without a traceable cause. People have noticed the light out while at motion on a residential street at low speed, on a highway at 50 mph and at rest.
Primary headlights randomly go out while both parked and driving down the road. Sometimes both at the same time. Turning them off and on again manually resets them to work again. This seems like a huge design flaw and major safety hazard, since it leads to driving in the dark without headlights. Repair shops want $100s per bulb to replace hid bulbs that seem to not actually be burned out. The design choice for hid bulbs that exhibit this temporary failure mode seems to be a fundamentally flawed engineering choice compared to other, more reliable technology such as leds. No existing recalls were found when searching the dot. Gov website for this issue.
Headlight bulbs keep going blowing consistently. Vehicle stationary.

My left headlight goes off but if I turn the headlights back off and back on it comes back on. The headlight is not burned out. This happens while on the freeway in the dark while raining. This happens intermittently and not all the time.

The driver's side headlight on my 2008 Prius goes out periodically when driving but, to date, not when stationary. I recently drove to texas and back and this didn't occur on the highway or country roads. It seems to only happen in city stop-and-go driving, but I can't be sure. If noticed, by turning the lights off and on it comes back on but it's not always noticeable. Information online indicates that costly hid bulb and ballast replacements, and/or other costly repairs, do not solve the problem. This poses a potentially serious safety risk and has gotten me pulled over by the police. The problem seems to be common with 2006-2009 Prius's which would indicate a design/manufacturing flaw that Toyota should address and correct. Please look into this matter and advise me on how to proceed to correct the problem. Thank-you, richard luellen richardluellen@aol. Com.
08 Prius headlights intermittently and without warning go out for up to about 1/2 hour at a time. Either one will do it almost every time they are used and so far, only one at a time. Untrustworthy and very dangerous.
The headlights keep burning out and stops working without warning.

Abs system fails, rear passenger seat belt issue, headlight bulbs burned too much.
Both of my Prius low beams went out at the same time, I thought it was unusual as both headlights should not go out simultaneously. It was late at night and I was returning from church. I either had to drive without the low beams which is very dangerous or drive high beams which blinds oncoming traffic. I looked online and read several people had both low beams go out simultaneously. This is obviously a problem and should not be happening as it clearly presents a safety risk at night and puts others at risk because I had to use the high beams. This is an ongoing issue with Toyota and they should be held liable for putting the motoring public at risk. Dealer inspected vehicle and claimed both low beams burned out simultaneously. I was advised of a service bulletin that expired on October 2019 that addressed this issue but they said it didn't apply and that it had expired. I was charged $250 for two headlights. When it comes to public safety their should be no expiration and they should fix the problem.

I purchased my 2017 Prius v ii in may 2017. Approximately 9 months or so after purchase my headlights burnt out, first the driver's side then passengers side. I am now replacing, purchasing new headlights every 3-4 because they continue to burn out. I've tried various brands including buying directly from Toyota but they still burn out. This is dangerous especially for night driving. Luckily the headlights do not burn out together at the same time. Toyota dealer won't give me an answer except to purchase a new lighting system for my headlights.

Headlights constantly go out. Research online proves Prius vehicles with hid bulb systems have ballast issues causing constant blowing of either bulbs or ballast failure. Not only is safety constantly compromised, but it is illegal when a headlight goes out driving down the road.

While the vehicle was in motion on side street traffic at maximum 40 mph the right headlight turned off and I was pulled over for a traffic violation. The headlights were both working when I left my house 10 minutes earlier. They were both working when I left work later that day. The lights have had this problem before on and off frequently on the highway and side streets, but every time I check after pulling over and turning the car back on both lights are working.
The headlight lenses covers repeatedly clouds over to the point I can hardly see the roadway at night. Dealer have cleanse the lenses how has last for about a month. The dealer now says these need to be replace at a cost to me for $750. I believe this is manufacture's defect and it is a serious safety issue for a recall. The dealer should develop a fix and replace these lenses without charging the vehicle owner.

Headlight bulbs fail frequently, several times per year. I called Toyota in January 2020. I was informed they had a brief warranty extension to cover the issue, but that has ended. They've refused to offer any assistance. They claim they notified me of the issue, but they clearly did not; the address they claimed to have sent it to was not my address. This is a safety issue, because the bulbs fail so frequently and are not owner-replaceable. I hope you can help. Thank you.
The headlights on my 2005 Prius continue to go out. We replace the bulbs but even with brand new bulbs will be driving and after about 60 seconds of headlights being on the light will turn off. Sometimes only one turns off but often bolt turn off and we're in complete darkness driving on the road. We have to toggle the headlight control off and on several times before they turn on again, which leaves us driving in complete darkness and it's a big safety hazard! again, brand new bulbs have this issue, too. Getting the whole headlight and computer behind it replaced is very expensive. This is a big safety issue and it has been happening and getting worse for over a year.

For a few months, the left hand side front headlight has gone out, if I turn the lights off and then back on again, it comes back on. However last night, while driving on a dark nc highway both lights went out. They came back on when I turned the lights on an off again. This happened two more times. It is clearly a safety issue that I see many other Prius owners experience. It is entirely possible both lights have been going out for some time, since driving on dark country highways at 70 mph is not something I regularly do.
Headlights go out after a few days. . Replaced over 8 bulbs. Checked connectors, checked wiring. . No problem found and the problem still exist.

First the driver's side low beam failed, followed by the passenger low beam headlight days later. After replacing both lights, the driver's side low beam failed followed by the passenger's low beam.
The driver side headlight, running high beams and low beams, have stopped working despite changing the bulbs. It seems to be an issue with the ballast going out and/or just not working anymore. This seems like a major safety issue.

The passenger side front headlight started going off automatically after a while of turning on. If I turn it off and on again, it lights up and then first dims and then turns off on its own. The lights have been replaced and it did not solve the problem. This is very dangerous for night time driving as the drivers will never know when the headlights will go out. This is not a random incident; it is one of the most common problems of gen 2 Prius (04-09) that I found online. I am attaching a document that lists some online forums where other Prius owners have reported similar problems. Toyota settled a lawsuit for 06-09 Prius, yet there is no recall for the headlight issue of gen 2 Prius.
The hid headlights are both out, after being on maybe 5 minutes. From everything I have read online and from my mechanic, this is a known issue with my model of car, that has been going on for years. The ballast is faulty, and would need to be tested prior to replacing a hid light. This has been happening for months, and I simply do not drive at night as a result. With the time change, this is to difficult.
Toyota Prius low beam headlights suddenly go out due to known issue with wire harness. No recall issued and owner is responsible for cost of repair.
My wife and I own 2 Prius 2nd generation models since 2014. The issue is with the instrument cluster randomly malfunctioning and not displaying when the vehicle is on and sometimes not being able to turn the vehicle off. It happens while driving, stationary, raining, just randomly. This has happened more than 10 times on my car alone, and my wife can contests to hers as well. What we both are experiencing is one of many situations. While driving the dash lights and interior lights will just not work: I'm unable to see driving speed, if my headlights are on. Even while stationary we experience the same thing. The main reasons for reporting this is because coincidentally it happens to both of us at random times in 2 different vehicles same model and year. From my own research this has been going on for a while with other owners with the same models. I don't know what constitutes as a safety concern for recalls, but I feel this is one. I'm fortunate to not have any accidents so far. But for others who are experiencing this can accidentally start speeding, or become startled because of the sudden loss of dash visuals, and result in harm of other's or property. This just happened again today and I just had to say something since this has been a persistent issue for my wife and I. Thanks for taking the time to read this and please look into this.
Automatic high beams dim and then fail to brighten intermittently. When driving, automatic high beams function as intended then the dash indicator spontaneously turns off and the headlights fail to brighten. Vehicle has been to the dealership service department twice for this. The second time , the dealer was able to duplicate the problem both in my vehicle and in a 2019 Prius from the inventory. Toyota technical assistance is adamant that the problem is normal functionality. I fail to understand how the high beams not brightening when they should during night driving is normal functionality.

Right hid headlight keeps going out during short or long trips. It it's now October 2019. This same light was replaced for same problem in July 2018 and I was told by my mechanic that my ballast and electrical connection is fine. It should not be burned out by now. I only use the lights at night or during rain. I have read on several online forums with similar complaints from Prius owners. This is a safety issue.
While driving during the day or night, throughout the year (non-seasonal), both headlights (hid) flicker, and the passenger side headlight goes off completely and intermittently. Sometimes it comes back on if I turn the lights off and on again, but most of the time it doesn't. We have been pulled over twice for this and received two tickets from police. It doesn't work to exchange or replace bulbs. I know I'm not the only 2008 Prius owner with this problem and I believe Toyota needs to pay to have it repaired.
Both of my headlights went out at the same time the other day now the fact that both of them went out at the exact same time already tells me that its not the bulb, ballest or anything other then an electrical issue because everyone is having this problem and they have changed both ballasts and bulbs and the same thing happened over and over again, please make this a recall because it is very unsafe.
While driving passenger side headlight went out. After several tries of turning lights on and off, the headlight stayed on. It cuts out at difficult times like driving on highway. Worried police may stop me. Have tried several fixes like new headlight assembly, etc.
I have had to replace headlight bulbs multiple times in the past two years. Reading reports, it is the exact same issue as the 2010 and 2011 Prius owners had. I am now having to have my headlight covers resurfaced because my passenger side headlight is not at all visible at night. The dealership is recommending replacing the compartment where the bulb goes.

While driving at night, the headlights will randomly turn off. This is dangerous and scary. Please help!.
I've had to replace the light bulb on my passenger side headlight constantly over the past couple of months. I heard that there was a recall on the wiring harness of the 2012 regular Prius and I'm wondering if the issue has been looked at in the Prius c models.
Both driver and passenger side low beam headlights fail frequently (every 3-6 months) making driving in the early mornings and nighttime very dangerous, as they fail unexpectedly. The most dangerous situation for us with the headlight failure is when we were driving at night in the mountains and both low beams failed at the same time. Thankfully the high beams were functioning. The fact that there is a recall for 2010 and 2011 models but the 2012 model Prius is excluded us very concerning considering the issue is the same across years.
One headlight on my car keeps shutting off, while the other is fine. I am able to "fix" the issue by turning my headlights off and then turning them on again. Dealers initially told me it was because the bulb burned out, but I replaced both at the same time, and it's always the driver's side bulb that "burns out. " upon further review on public forums, it appears the bulb is perfectly fine and there's some type of electrical issue/connection problem that causes problems with the bulb. This happens when the vehicle is on and in-motion on any street.
