I purchased four continental 185 65 r15 tires for 2008 Toyota Prius and had them installed at a Nissan dealership on 10/24/2011with mileage 92526 due to curb strikes, I incurred two road hazard sidewall claims within 2 days of install; one bulbous section and one flat. Installation of warranty replacements occurred 11/08/11 at mileage 93335. Another curb strike sidewall warranty claim for third tire installed on 2/28/12 at mileage 98658. Fourth and final replacement of originally purchased tires yet to be processed/installed from curb strike road hazard on 4/9/12 at mileage 100289. Prior to purchase of continental tires, no road hazard has occurred with the vehicle on two other brands of tires. I had to purchase an extra oem spare tire due to the length of the warranty process and the number of occurrences. The last and final time, since I had not yet replaced my oem spare again(it hadn't been six weeks since the last replacement) I purchased a less-expensive brand and model, as each local continental dealer is unable to order this model of tire from their distributor and has to call continental for replacement directly. The second oem spare was unfit for driving.

The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Prius. While driving 10 mph, the front driver's side tire went flat. The contact replaced the tire with a spare. The vehicle then began experiencing numerous failures. The instrument panel gauges illuminated and the odometer began to fail. The dealer stated that it would take a few days to diagnose the cause of the failure. Days later, the mechanic explained that there was an issue with the computer system not recognizing the oversized tires. The mechanic placed the regular size tire back on the vehicle, which corrected the issue. The contact is concerned that the spare tire could cause dangerous driving conditions if it ever needed to be used again. The current and failure mileages were 14,500. Updated 11/14/08. Updated 11/18/08.
Cause: flat tire in the front left or front right of the vehicle. The front left demonstrating the most severe hazard
failure: the traction control system engages regularly due to a discrepancy between the spare and normal tire size. Traction control cuts power to the drive wheels and cannot be overridden, causing vehicle to lose speed in non-deterministic manner. Vehicle is not responsive. Condition is worst during the first 40 miles driven on the spare tire but consequently improves due to learning inside the car computer. Unfortunately, vehicle is most dangerous when the driver has the least control over the situation. Correction: none, the manufacturer claims the vehicle is operating as designed.

Two bridgestone potenza re92 [p175/65 r14 84s, dot el(pjdh4801] tires failed on my 2002 Prius within one week. These are the tires installed on the vehicle when we bought it. Our vehicle currently has slightly less than 25,000 miles on the odometer and is driven primarily for commuting on freeways. We discovered the right front tire extremely low on air when returning to a parking garage on 4/12/03. As we were unable to locate a gas station my husband changed the failed tire with the temporary tire and had the the failed tire repaired the next day. When serviced we were told the tire had a pin hole and irregular wear pattern. We took the vehicle into the dealership for its scheduled 22,500 mile service and to had the tires inspected and the front end aligned. When questioned about the tires wear pattern we were told the "tires were marginal" and that we should expect to replace the tires in the next six months. The second tire failed today when my husband was cut off in a parking lot (traveling less than 5 miles an hour and swerved to avoid being hit and hit the parking curb), the tire failed and required immediate replacement with the temporary tire. We are having all four tires replaced, at this time, due to the failure of the two bridgestone potenza re92 [p175/65 r14 84s, dot el9pjdh4801] within a seven day period.
