1 Tire Blowout problem of the 2015 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/02/2019

Driving on the freeway home heard a strange noise, pulled over to check and thought I had blown a tire somehow. When closely inspecting tire treading the center of the tire completely came off in a perfect circle when driving. Took tire to costco where tires were purchased less than a year a ago (8/24/18) was informed its a manufacturer's defect. Had to pay for a new tire. It was also discovered that passenger back tire had a whole in it which was missed when I took car in for tire inspection.

2 Tire Blowout problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 03/29/2014

Collision: a collision never occurred with any object, based on the physical location, where the vehicle came to rest. I enclose three (3) photographs showing the condition of the car, the two right tires blown out, and the car having ground to a haltfrom the weight of vehicle as it sharply veered right into (not onto) the right hand shoulder of 101. I lost control after hearing a bang, but no airbag deployed, further proving there was no collision. Location: the officer reported the location of the incident being at the intersection of 101 and 18th street (where there also is an overpass): however, after comparing my photographs and the unique geographic features in the photos to google maps, I was able to correctly identify the crash site about 15-20 meters past the 22nd street pedestrian overpass, where the highway grade is uphill curving left; & signs say to reduce speed to from 55 to 50 mph approaching the top of potrero hill, near sf general hospital. There is no guard rail or sign posts to hit; only a soft shoulder (bordered by shrubbery) exists where I came to a halt: there was nothing (no objects) to collide with. (see attached) road condition: very narrow shoulder: maybe 5 feet. Pebbles rocks and dirt make up the shoulder, and slightly affected the car's direction, but primarily caused damage, pulling off the read bumper, scratching the body throughout, and causing the front right wheel to collapse like a beer can, after the front right, then the rear right tire blew out. I attempted to push the car, at my own risk from the right lane, but it felt as if all four brakes had seized, so I could not budge the vehicle so much as 1/10th of a millimeter, with all my weight and strength.

3 Tire Blowout problem of the 2011 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/18/2012

On October 18,2012 I was driving my 2011 Prius 2 on a 2 lane highway at 55 mph when the drivers side rear yokohama tire blew out on the sidewall. I swerved in to the left lane twice before leaving the road, snapping off a utility pole, going down a revine and rolling over end for end and side to side. I ended up in the middle of the back seat on my stomach facing the rear of the car. The drivers seat was broken back and my seatbelt was still on. I was in in the hospital for a month following back surgery. I had 3 cracked vertibre and one cracked rib as well as many bruises. Needless to say the car was totaled and I am still recovering 3. 5 months later.

Sequential failure of 4 goodyear assurance tires placed on vehicle in October 2004. Since October of 2012 the tires have been blowing out at the rate of one every 6-8 weeks. I plan on replacing the one remaining of those 2004 tires before it implodes also while driving.

5 Tire Blowout problem of the 2011 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/31/2012

I was driving on the 101 n freeway at about 55 mph and I heard a loud popping noise. I had never had a tire blow before so I didn't even realize what was happening until I heard the flat tire. Luckily it was my left rear tire so I was not injured and I was able to safely make my way across the freeway onto the right hand side of the freeway where I called aaa to come and change it to my spare. I called Toyota, they said they had nothing to do with the tires and could not help me and I would have to make a complaint to yokohama, the tire company. I called the tire company, they told me to have it inspected and it was found that it was a road condition that led to the tire damage and therefore it was not under warranty. The exact same incident occurred again on 01/15/2013, this time I was going 65 mph on the 101 s freeway. My rear right tire blew out and I had to get across traffic where I got off the freeway and was able to call for help. My concern is not whether the tire company will be able to foot the cost, but the fact that my tires will blow out when I'm driving under or about the speed limit for a road condition that everyone else manages to drive on with no problems. I reported both incidents with Toyota and yokohama.

9 Tire Blowout problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 03/20/2011

While driving my 3 week old 2011 toyoya Prius with 1700 miles on the odometer on the freeway driving my daughter back to school my rear passenger side yokohama avid tire experienced a blowout. After successfully manuvering the car off of the freeway and to a safe location I installed the spare donut and then inspected the tire. The inside sidewall burst open and no road hazard was present. I filed a claim with yokohama tires and they had me have the tire inspected by discount tire in scottsdale, az. Their inspection suggested a manufacturers defect since they could not locate any punctures or other type of road hazard. At the time of the blowout I was 75 miles from flagstaff, az, my final destination on a Sunday late afternoon and could ot locate an open tire dealer or Toyota dealer that was open so I continued on the donut at 50 mph to flagstaff and located an open sears that had the right size replacement tire by another manufacturer. I had sears inspect the blown out tire and the rest of the tires and they concluded that the tire was defective based on their observations. I requested that yokohama professionally inspect the tire local to me so that I can carry it in as opposed to shipping it to them. Please let me know your thoughts and if there is anything else that I should do to document this issue. **please not that this occurred on a 2011 Toyota Prius*** there was no Prius model listed under 2011 Toyota models. . . . Please correct.

10 Tire Blowout problem of the 2005 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/20/2008

I purchased a 2005 Toyota Prius and drove it for 12,00 miles at which time the tires were completely wore out. When I went in to Toyota and pointed this out they replaced the tires because the car was still under warranty. I take my car in for the scheduled services recommended by Toyota. To date my car has 25,000 miles and I am experiencing the same problems with the tires. Therefore the tires only have 13,000 miles wear. I called Toyota and spoke to the head manager who indicated that the Prius cars have this problem because of the battery and Toyota is aware of this. If they are aware of this problem, why do they use the goodyear tires which wear out so quickly? I have also read on the internet of other Prius owners experiencing the same problem with the tires and having blow outs on freeways, etc. I think there should be a safety recall on Toyota Prius tires since upon reading information on the internet there have been a multitude of owners who have experience the same problem as I. They should put safer tires on the car since they are aware of this situation.

14 Tire Blowout problem of the 2003 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/01/2004

I had a blow out on the front right tire on my 2003 Prius. The tire had a large split across the entire inside of the tire - the side you couldn't' see - as well as the spot in the outside of the tire that had blown out. The tire was completely destroyed and had very unusual wear patterns on it. The rest of the tires did not show unusual wear. I took it back to bridgestone since it was under warranty and they said it was a problem with the Prius. I took it to the Toyota dealer who said the tire warranty was through bridgestone. I now plan to replace the tires with higher psi tires that should have been on the car to begin with when purchased. The blow out sounded like an explosion when it happened. If I had been on a freeway I would have lost control of the car.

15 Tire Blowout problem of the 2001 Toyota Prius

20 Tire Blowout problem of the 2001 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/02/2001

We had a tire separate at 75mph in the rear. A couple weeks later the front right tire separated at 70mph. The car had approx. 20000 on it. When toytota raised the car they found a third front left tire had begun to seperate. I said I did not trust these bridgestone/firestone tires so they put on michelin tires. The dealer then called and said no other tire could support the weight of the Prius. They had already put the michelins on. I called all the tire manufactures to find out that only the factory bridgestone/firestone tires could support the weight of the hybrid Prius. I phoned Toyota and firestone. Both said they would call me back within three weeks. No one had called. Toyota said it is a tire manufacturer problem, but they use their tires. I went to the dealer to be told since I took the car in they had three other Prius's come in with blown tires all with about 20000 miles on them. I went to sears in san bernardino and was told that they too had two Prius's with blown tires. I have lost over $2000. 00 and spent three weeks with a painful knee and Toyota doesn't care. I got three friends to buy Toyota Priuss and I now worry about their tires. Since this started Toyota email me and said do not drive the car over 85 mph for the tires can not support the car and speed. Why weren't we told this at time of purchase? no other tire is made for the car and the bridgestone/firestone tires are not up to supporting the car safely ever. I will take my chances with the michelins. Other Prius owners have told me they will take their chances with other brands even if they are not rated for car.
