Faulty ecu computers causeing variations in speed and problems with hard shifting, damageing transmissons, causeing vehicles to fail while driving while in motion vehicle will not shift correctly. My vehicle stopped in an intersection and I was nearly hit by another vehicle while attempting to accelerate the vehicle would not shift into gear while turning left. I felt I could have been killed by on comming traffic with no ability to control my vehicle. Toyota dealer and mechanic told me this is a well know defect and problem know to Toyota with rav 4 2001-2003. Also, 02 sessors go bad early leading to hazardous emissions to public and this burns out catalitic converters which can also cause harmful emissions. Rav 4 2001 to 2003 have been identified as having faulty ecu's, auto transmissions and 02 sensor deficits and should be recalled by Toyota to protect the public from accidents related to poor shifting, unsafe speed control and harmful emissions to the public. I notified Toyota and they said they would do nothing because they offered an extended warnety but that expired after 10 years and they never notified me of any problems to look out for with the transmission. I feel these vehicles may be a danger to the public due to built in engineering defects that affect speed control and emissions. They also lead to very costly repairs for the customers.

My wife was driving car and it started doing strange changes with the transmission, such as slipping between gear changes and jerking movements. At one point, she told me getting on freway on ramp was a hazard, because of irratic behavior of transmission!!.

14 month old Rav4 xle driving down the interstate and applied the brakes for slow traffic, the abs / traction control warning lights came on. I am over the 36,000 mile warranty as my work entails driving. The local dealer quoted me $2800 for repairs, he checked with the Toyota mfg. Rep to see if possibly the abs actuator is covered under the powertrain portion (60000 miles) of Toyota's warranty. Toyota dealer stated no warranty coverage due to mileage. Located numerous complaints and recall for "certain model year" 2016 Toyota Rav4 recall - #16v198000 recall for service brakes, hydraulic : antilock. It appears they are aware of a problem with the 2016 model but will only a few of the ones sold.

Updating the recent complaint, warning lights:-check engine, vsc, tcs,break,4wd lights are keep on coming , vehicle looses all power assistance. This is the 4th time I am experiencing the same problem. This vehicle was with auto mechanic few days ago and he changed the battery and check the alternator, all in good condition. Yesterday morning I was on the way to work, all warning lights came and I had to stop the car in freeway, I turned off the engine and left the vehicle for few minutes, started engine and engine light were on, but all power came back and I could went back back to my home. I left the this car at home and took my 2nd car and went for work. Evening I check the car, my car looks normal there was no warning lights, it was running normal. I beleive this car has some serious electronic problem( unable to detect through diagnostic machine). Which I check with 3 different mechanics.

Most lights on dashboard are lit up. Vsc, engine 4wd. Also my mechanic said outs throwing off a lot of false readings. Lights are always on sometimes feels like the transmission is slipping when I go from stopped to go on a hill. Outs been this way since I bought it.
When driving on hills, specify during a turn, at sporadic times, the esc light comes on, with 3 beeps from the dash. . . . . . The car jerks and lugs, like the engine is dying, then resumes normal speed. Each time this happens is a little more dramatic than the last, and has happened 5 times in the past month. My car has 99000 miles on it , and has been a terrific car so far, but now I am scared to drive it. My husband called Toyota dealers, and local toy specialty shops, but no one has heard of this problem. After reading about other drivers experiences with their esc problems, I am leary of the cost of a fishing expedition at a dealer, unless I can go in with more information. I bought this car used, based on the dependability reports for this model and year, and would like to keep it for a long time, but first need to find a solution to this problem.

The contact owns a 2012 Toyota Rav4. While driving various speeds, the brake pedal was depressed and an unknown warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the master cylinder and the actuator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was aware of NHTSA campaign number: 14v054000 (electronic stability control, service brakes hydraulic), but the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was 40,000. The VIN was unavailable.

This was my problem one year ago and listed on this page under the date 3/6/2015 abs light, vsc light, brake light and traction control light illuminated causing all systems to be inoperative. After taking car to local dealer problem was found to be bad left wheel speed sensor, harness for sensor and wheel hub that had corrosion on it possibly from living in an area that deices roads with salt. In my research it has been brought to my attention through several Toyota blogs this is a recurring problem around the country. Several people have had the same complaint and the associated cost to fix this problem is expensive. If an owner fails to fix the problem the outcome could become catastrophic in inclimate weather. Exactly one year later the right side wheel hub assy. And wiring harness went out. This time I changed it all myself saving almost $600 from having it done at Toyota dealer. This problem is going to kill someone. While waiting for the parts to come in the car was being driven by my wife during a rainstorm. Another driver pulled out in front of her and she had to brake hard. Due to the abs being inop. It caused the vehicle to slide. I haven't found any other complaints on here but I'm almost positive it has happened to someone else. It's a terrible design and like I said someone will be killed due to the lack of concern.

I recently had the charcoal canister that filters gas fuels fail. This caused teh check engine light to come on. In addition though, this fault took out 2 safety systems due to this code. After the light came on my brake anti skid system and cruise control were inoperable. I complained to the dealer about this issue and was told this was normal. In my opinion, just because a check engine light comes on should not cause 2 safety systems to become inoperable! why no disable the airbags too. The anti skid system helps you maintain stability on wet road. I live in the pacific northwest where the roads are wet a lot. I see failure of the cruise control is also a safety issue. I use cruise habitually so keep me under the speed limit. I had to drive without these 2 systems for a month till parts were available.

While driving 55-60 on a highway, my anti-skid warning light came on, the 4wheel drive light a half hour later, followed by the engine light aprx 1 hr later. The following morning, while driving, the cruise control went out on me, the car unexpectedly slowed and I noticed the cruise light flashing on and off. The remote start did not work on day #3, as I traveled to have the car repaired at serra Toyota, traverse city, mi. The service tech told me that "the mechanic literally poured water out of the evap canister, we have seen other rav's w this problem and we have a bulletin on it, so Toyota is aware. The canister is faulty, which allowed road water, (very wet, slushy roads at time), to get in and damage the wiring. " the service tech also told me that the new canister/hose replacement system addresses this issue. I emailed Toyota japan, they had "henry kerry of Toyota executive headquarters, torrence, calif call me. Mr. Kerry stated that the problem was related to overfilling the gas tank. I told him that the tech said "(they) literally poured water out and they had seen this problem previously. " mr. Kerry advised that "I should have talked to the service manager to get the factual info. " bottom line: I feel that I should have been notified that electrical failure could occur, due to canister/hose failure and that a new part had been developed which, once installed, would prevent (road) water from shorting out the wiring. (the work order receipt states: ("water intrusion into evap system") thanks much, scott mclennan 989 370-0122 samgbm@hotmail. Com.
Driving 50 mpg around curve in heavy traffic steering locked up hardly able to pull. Off side of road. Happened again today 2 times and happened at least 5 times before in the past 3 months. Steering froze had to get of to the side and restart then it was able to steer but battery. Light flickers. Three other lights on the left of the dashboard stayed on after restarting the vehicle. Went to pep-boys and I was asked to replace the battery due to low voltage. Battery was replaced and one day later same thing happened again.

Driving on the highway going about 75mph after about 5 hours when a bunch of warning lights came on (including battery, air bag, and brake), my power steering failed and my speedometer quit working. Pulled over on the side of the highway and let my car sit for a minute, restarted my car and three different lights came on (vsc, check engine and slip indicator) and my cruise control wouldn't work anymore. My car currently has about 110,000 miles. This is not a wear and tear issue; this is a defect. From reading online, there are many complaints of the same issue. This could be a fatal defect and should be taken seriously. This is the second time my power steering has failed while driving.
Rav4 check engine light on so had a diagnostic test done. Codes indicate there may a problem with catalytic converter. My vehicle only has 107k miles. I am the original owner and have maintained all service recommendations. Mechanic indicated I should have received a campaign notice for this problem. Now looking at a repair bill of approx. $2k. Toyota should be responsible for fixing this. I have had the same address for years.
On October 5 and 6, 2015 my 2008 Toyota Rav4 was in for service at piercey Toyota in milpitas to replace all four tires, front/back brakes and front shock absorbers, a total of $2,000. On October 8, 2015, while I was driving my car back from stanford lucile packard over dumbarton bridge, I have noticed that my brakes would not engage and I could not slow down my car. Just before this event, the abs, vsc, and slip warning lights all came on. The brake pedal felt very stiff and I was not able to do any repetitive pumping of the brake. I called 911 and requested assistance. When the front traffic came to a hold I had to use my emergency brake and my entire car slipped to the left. We almost got hit by the bus behind us. Some good samaritans saw what happened and helped me to get my car off the road. That day, my 9 yrs. Old son and I could have been killed. I request that Toyota investigates/recalls the brake actuator assemblies for Toyota Rav4 2008. In the subject vehicles, the brake system contains a brake actuator that adjusts the fluid pressure of each wheel cylinder. Within the actuator is an electrical terminal that connects the brake actuator motor and the circuit board of the skid control electronic control unit (ecu). Due to manufacturing variation, there could be a reduction in contact force between the two components of the terminal, causing oxide film to increase resistance. A larger than normal increase in resistance can cause the illumination of various warning lights, including those for the skid control (vehicle stability control or vsc) system, antilock brake system (abs), and traction control system. Lfthis occurs, these systems could become inoperative, which could increase the risk of a crash.
I've taken to 6 mechanics and no one knows what it is because the light is no constantly on. I took it to Toyota and they wanted $400 to diagnose and there was no guarantee. I think this is a serious dangerous issue because I lose control of my vehicle when the road is clear and dry. It beeps and I guess tries to stabilize itself. Always on the highway. On the streets the traction light flashes frequently.

I am requesting that dot NHTSA recall the ecm in all 2002 Toyota Rav4s. When I contacted Toyota after a badly designed and manufactured ecm in our Rav4 failed and also destroyed our transmission, I was told that they knew the part was bad, but they had been allowed to avoid a recall by offering a short term consumer support program (csp 01-03my Rav4 transaxle ecm)--and that program is over. They offered no help, only an empty apology. Toyota made a bad part that cost my family over $3500 for parts and repairs¿and deborah a. Houston of the Toyota motor sales executive office very clearly admitted that to me; yet because there was no recall, Toyota doesn¿t have to compensate us for the work. They made a bad part, yet they were rewarded for it when we had to buy a new ecm before we could have the transmission rebuilt. We never received a letter about the consumer support program, and Toyota also admitted that many people didn¿t due to address issues, etc. Hundreds of 2002 Rav4 owners have reported this issue, and as difficult as it is to figure out how to file a complaint for most of us, probability says that many more of the cars have been fixed or junked without the issues reported. A quick internet search yields numerous complaints. It should be cut and dry: make a bad part--pay for the repairs. There is a difference between a worn out part and shoddy design and manufacturing. The transmission shop owner who repaired our car said that he'd been brought several Rav4s from 2002 with the same issue. That¿s several in one, small town. It is not too late to recall the 2002 Toyota Rav4 ecm. The people still needing these cars for transportation are the people who can¿t afford $3500 plus repairs.
Computer problems causing all the lights to come on the dashboard and disabling the shifting solenoid. It also disables the safety braking and four wheel drive. This causes the vehicle to be unsafe.

My rear car suspension was incased because it was recalled. Over 55 mph was car would sway from side to side. I called Toyota and was told my car was perfect. I took the car to two dealers who said at low speed the car performed well. The was a law suit in California that proved the car is defective after the recall. I missed the date because I did not research the web. I sold the car for less because I did not want a crash. I lost money on the car sale.

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph, the vsc and the check engine warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the computer software needed to be updated. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000. The VIN was not available. Djr.
Without cause or reason, the "brake actuator" circuit malfunctioned causing the car to lose cruise control, abs, anti-skid and sporadic tail light problems (lights will stay on or come on when the car is parked). I brought it to my Toyota dealer and they were unable to identify the problem. The next day, the roads were snow covered and the brakes locked up approaching an intersection causing the car to skid into another vehicle. When I brought the car back to the dealer, after the body was repaired, they located the problem and said it would cost $2900 to replace. Before I was able to have the vehicle repaired, the wiring caught fire, probably because the taillights came on by themselves during the night, as they occasionally did (without a key in the ignition). The car was towed to the Toyota dealer who estimates upwards of $10,000 for repairs to the computer and wiring system. The Toyota service manager recommends we sell the $19,000 car for "wholesale. " insurance will not cover the damage as it was a mechanical malfunction. Toyota corp. In California, consumer experiences department, will not give me any help as the car is 21,000 over the 36,000 mile warranty. How or where can I get a lawyer or consumer advocate to help me?.
Ecm malfunction.
Experiencing abnormal behavior when shifting gears (auto trans). Transmission was shifting oddly - harsh shift condition . It was not a frequent problem and no engine light and I took it to the local mechanic and he connected to his computer and could not find any error codes. The problem happens every time I move from a stop. Found out that Toyota put out a technical service bulletin in early 2006 after defects started surfacing stating to replace the car's computer ecm/ecu and possibly the transmission. . The company did not inform owners about this defect which is now surfacing and did not recall due to cost of replacing the ecu and transmission it destroys. The defective ecu burns up the clutch and other parts in the transmission.

Osteoporosis and I read that this drug brings on or makes worse any osteoporosis condition mine is extremely sever and mine is sever. I fractured my right knee in 15 places-I am in constant pain-I have to pay out money to get anywhere I need to go-groceries,bank all the continuing visits to my primary doctor, my orthopedic surgeon(because unless I do not replace my knee-I will be in this horrific-& pain that is my orthos opinion. I am all for it just to lessen the pain- I do not want to have take pills when it could be gone after my accidents- I receive in the mail yet another recall that specifily says my VIN number and says that besides something that gives electrical to the air bags- may cause air bags-not to deploy-I have no car,it was totalled, the police suspended my license and because of this I have to go through a bunch of stuff in order to get get my license back. I have called Toyota a lot of times-they do not care=I was what-I have no familyi have had 4 accidents-never had that many, I had a Toyota ceclica for 20 years and never had 1 recall and did have 1 accident. . And that is 20years prior to this one-that car was a super lemon, but no one gives a damn what I am going through and no one cares-the people I have talked to down there are rude and disrespective to mt. Hopefully I can find a lawyer which will do pro-bono. Thanks for the 15 fractures. I was driving along and came to a stop. When I started to go, my rav had no power, then it lurched and almost stopped. I had to nurse it-slowly accelerate-in order for it to move. Every time I stopped and started it did this. Once it made a noise like a hard shift from the rear of the car. I had to put my emergency flashers on to drive it safely, and drove to a transmission shop. In speaking with them, they said that Toyota has a known recall on this situation! the computer locks up the transmission. They called Toyota and gave them my VIN, it has not been replaced. Its going to cost anywhere from $1500 to $5000 to fix, depending on if the transmission is actually messed up or if it is the computer causing the problem. He has to pull the transmission to check it first. If it is the computer they said about $1000. Who do I contact to get reimbursed for this recall? when I put my VIN number in your site, it says there are no known recalls. The internet says differently. I need help!.
Car started actin g up on may 4th. Didn't want start right away it stated after 4 5 tires after 3 days of that I took the car to local dealer they told me battery was low and they charged it. My 2001 Toyota Rav4 had the same problem that was covered in Toyota¿s extened warranty and recall for this make and model. According to a July 10, 2010 article online at thecarconnection. Com it is ¿an issue with the automatic transmission and electronic control module. The issue, which affects around 235,500 vehicles, can lead to a damaged, rough-shifting transmission¦. While the Rav4 for those model years was originally covered for five years or 60,000 miles on powertrain components, Toyota is extending coverage to ten years or 150,000 miles. The automaker is also offering to reimburse current or former owners for repairs already made. ¿ for me, the problem did not appear until near the very end of the coverage date. It was mis-diagnosed and when problem was finally identified, I was told it was outside the warranty window and Toyota would not cover the repair. This issue is well known to Toyota and widely documented.
Tl- the contact owns a 2004 Toyota rav-4. The contact stated that the esc warning light randomly flashed. The contact experienced the vehicle suspension being unstable each time the vehicle was driven over 30 mph and upon making a turn. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to replicate and diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and they provided no permanent remedy for the dealer to repair the condition. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000. Dyd.
The contact owns a 2012 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that NHTSA campaign number: 14v054000 (electronic stability control, service brakes, hydraulic) exceeded a reasonable amount of time for repair. The dealer stated that the parts needed were not available. The manufacturer was not made aware of the delay. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact had not experienced the failure.
As I exit the highway on sharp off ramps or take other similar tight turns, vsc trac sensor lights turns on and off and I can hear grinding noise when traction control auto-engages and disengages. The roadways have never been slick or wet and this issue has occurred at various speeds (30-50 mph).
My cars check engine and vsc trac lights came on at the same time when I started the car. I then put it in drive and pressed on the gas pedal and nothing happened, but sometimes the car suddenly accelerates. My husband had to drive my car and I had to follow him home b/c the car was so unpredictable. He would have to push down hard on the gas pedal and it would hesitate but then all of a sudden it would then jerk forward. He was terrified that he would get stuck in the middle of an intersection! I found an article online about how Toyota provided extended warrantys to 2001-2003 Rav4 vehicle owners for this exact issue. . Read more...
