36 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2002 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 06/16/2009

Found fuel leaks on my 2002 Toyota truck Rav4. My car was towed in to Toyota dealer. They fixed it and stated "secure the fitting" on the invoice. They charged me $ 62. 50. I always sent to my car to the dealers for maintenance. Ii do not perform any mechanical maintenance on my car.

37 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 05/28/2009

My car was displaying error warnings and required me to go to Toyota to get a better understanding of the problem. After the diagnostic of the car, they stated I need a new charcoal cannister. This occurred just outside my 3 year/36000 miles warranty. The tech explained to me that this is a common issue and I wasn't the first he seen of this. He stated that this would have been covered if it occurred in the warranty period. The original piece should have been protected by a shield which 2007 and later are. It was only a matter time before other 2006 models would have this problem. Cost of repair was $2,000. I find this outrages that Toyota knows of this problem, but will not be proactive on this issue.

38 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 03/19/2009

This is the third complaint I have had on my 2006 Rav4 v6 2wd emission system causing my vehicle stability, traction control, and speed control systems to fail. The first event is odi number 10268422. The second event was submitted also, but I did not get an email- hopefully is submitted. This third event was due to a mile of driving slowly in light snow causing a fuel evaporation filter to break a tube fitting off (second event). Water entered the broken tube and failed the fuel evap charcoal canister which in turn failed the other systems listed in this third event. After some wrangling, the dealer agreed to submit it to my extended warranty and it was covered in full.

39 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 03/03/2009

This is the second complaint I have had on my 2006 Rav4 v6 2wd emission system causing my vehicle stability, traction control, and speed control systems to fail. The first event is odi number 10268422. The second event was due to a mile of driving slowly in light snow causing a fuel evaporation filter to break a tube fitting off. Water entered the broken tube and failed the fuel evap charcoal canister which in turn failed the vehicle stability, traction control, and speed control systems (odi number 10268424). I see no reason to tie emissions into safety systems such as these unless it is to "encourage" owners to bring their vehicles in for emissions service. After some wrangling, the dealer agreed to submit it to my extended warranty and it was covered in full. I was told the charcoal cannister would have cost me $700.

40 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/11/2009

I purchased a new 2007 Rav4 from Toyota of braintree in 2007. 1. In 2009 I could hear wind in the driver's window; I took the vehicle to be checked, Toyota service department said I was hearing things. 2. The driver's door caught fire (I had the keys with me) I had to spend $606. 01 to fix it, Toyota said there was water intrusion (I thought, it probably was, because of the air leak previously reported in 2009) 3. The steering wheel felt strange when I drove, I took it back for service, the diagnosis was steering shaft internal failure which needed to be replaced; I fought to get that fixed out of warranty. 5. On November 25, 2011 I was driving, the window fell in on me and on November 26, 2011, I had to have the driver's side window regulator replaced for $338. 30 7. Now, oil is leaking into the muffler. (I purchase oil frequently) this vehicle is only 4. 5 years old and should not have any of these major problems, when I purchased this Rav4, it was going to be my last vehicle purchase because Toyota advertises longevity of their products. I also know people who drive 1990 and 1995 Toyota products who have never had any of these problems. I was also treated very poorly during some of my repair visits. After the door caught on fire, I had a meeting with the owner of Toyota of braintree, [xxx] but his resolution was giving me $13,000. 00 for my vehicle (which I own) and me purchasing a brand new vehicle, which meant I would have a monthly payment. I did contact Toyota headquarters in California and filed a complaint and never received any resolution. Since then I received a letter from the national center for dispute settlement stating they can't help me. Thank you for any assistance, sincerely, Toyota Rav4 owner. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

41 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/03/2009

On freeway, other motorist notified me my car was "on fire!" I saw excessive smoke in rearview mirror. I took the next exit which was dixon, CA off interstate 80 west in California. The side of the freeway there is grassy, did not think it was safe to stop. . . I stopped the car and smoke was everywhere, coming up through the hood & under the car. This was tues, 2/3/09. I has the car serviced the fri before, 1/30/09 at Toyota vallejo in vallejo, CA. I called the dealership after calling aaa for a tow. The service advisor, ryan said "it couldn't have been from anything they had done. But there is an 'oil hose' that had been coming off alot of the Rav4's. " I was already upset & that made me livid!! if it were a known problem the dealership should have checked during the scheduled maint. My car was towed to lithia Toyota of vacaville #47 at 500 orange drive, vacaville, CA. Work order 394212. As of yesterday, 2/12/09, the assistant service manager, megan, told me there was no TSB she was aware of, yet the part that came off (vvti oil pipe) was not found at any other dealership or supplier in the united states, and was on order from Toyota in japan. I am furious that it appears Toyota was well aware of this problem and has failed to initiate any steps to prevent risk to its consumers. I am asking for a full investigation which hopefully will lead to a recall of the 2006 Rav4's and any other year this affects. Megan, the assistant service manager at lithia Toyota confirmed with my insurance adjuster, jose lara (geico 707-688-3318) the cost is covered under the powertrain warranty. . . . What about the cost of my life, and the lives of the other motorist surrounding me??? the risk of fire is never to be taken lightly. Please investigate this matter to avoid any cost of life.

42 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2008 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 11/30/2008

2008 Toyota rav-4 surges. Since purchasing the vehicle in November 2008, my vehicle has sporadically surged when coming to a stop and also when driving with foot on accelerator. I will have my foot on the brake and the car will surge as if I am pressing on the accelerator. When I am driving, it surges as if I am pressing the gas pedal up and down, although my foot remains steady. I complained about this the first time that I took my vehicle in and each time I have an oil change. I have been told that there is not a problem. I think that there must be more to the Toyota recall because my vehicle that is not subject to the recall appears to be having similar issues. I complained about this long before this recall was announced.

43 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

The vsc, check engine, lsd lights came on and we brought it in for service. The charcoal canister and hose and charcoal filter all missing causing contamination to charcoal cannister contamination. 44 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/25/2008

2/25/08 instance #1: I have had three instances of emissions components on my 2006 2wd Rav4 v6 being damaged in the 65000 miles I have driven it. The first instance manifested itself when the vehicle stability control, traction control and cruise control systems shut-off and lights in the instrument cluster came on. A damaged "charcoal canister" was replaced at the dealer under my extended warranty on 2/25/08. (this occurred a second time on 3/19/09 after an evaporation filter was damaged on 3/3/09 after driving a mile in less than an inch of wet snow. Each event shut off the vehicle stability control, traction control and cruise control systems and the associated system lights in the instrument cluster came on. The dealer felt the damage was due to my operation of the vehicle and at first denied submitting it to my extended warranty. I insisted the part was defective to fail in these circumstances and they eventually covered all repairs. ).

45 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 06/01/2007

I have always noticed that my 2007 Toyota Rav4 seemed to have a sudden burst of acceleration when I start to move. I asked a mechanic one time if this could be adjusted and was told there was nothing that could be done. I am now wondering if the same electronic throttle control that is causing problems on the later Rav4s is on my Rav4. I bet it is the same problem. I thought there was a mechanical throttle and now I hear it is an electronic throttle. If electronic, then I would think a change in the computer code that controls the throttle would fix the a problem.

46 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 11/24/2006

Engine hesitates upon acceleration from standing start, creating an unsafe situation.

47 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2002 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 11/17/2006

November 17, 2006 - after being parked in my driveway for approximately 30 minutes the engine caught on fire. The Rav4 engine compartment and entire interior was demolished, tires exploded, glass exploded over at least a 20 foot radius. Two engine trucks and 10 responders later the fire was out. 63,000 miles, no prior problems, 50k maintenance completed by dealer Jan 2006. VIN has zeros and letter o which are indistinguishable. Try both.

48 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2002 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/15/2002

When the brake was applied, the vehicle surged foward due to fuel throttle leakage. Dealer notified.

49 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2001 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/01/2002

Converter, replaced at 19,000 miles, was under warranty but burnt out my sensors and had to pay for them. This made it the second converter for this vehicle replacing the original. 50,000 miles replaced again under warranty and he sensors blew which I had to pay for them. Next one went at 80,000 miles and was told it wasn't under warranty that I had to pay for it. This made four in this car!! I was told once I purchased one the part would be covered for the rest of the time I owned the vehicle. Again had to pay for the sensors. Guess when I purchased the vehicle I didn't pay for the converter ?!?!?!? transmission went at 105,000 miles and was told it was out of warranty that was one year before they extended the warranty and I paid $5000. For transmission. Of course no notice went around saying they would reimburse if you paid for it, only found that out when I had to buy another converter at 130,000 miles plus sensors! when I called of course they said that converter is only good for one year! I was told the part was covered for lifetime! they wouldn't give me a copy of the transcript at the time nor now. I wouldn't have done it by Toyota as they charge double!! I fought for two weeks on the phone with them and finally they told me I was right that it was lifetime and they would call the dealer. Well they called the dealer and called me back in half hour and said it wasn't again! then I was told when I demanded a supervisor there is no manager on duty at their corporate headquarters, they would 'out of good faith' give me one with one year warranty but I had to pay for it and I would get reimbursed!! good faith?! I have put thirteen thousand dollars into this vehicle of their defective parts! even other mechanics have said that!! where are the recalls on the cat converters?!.
