After the check engine, vehicle stability control & 4wd warning lights displayed on my 2007 Toyota Rav4 with 89,400 miles, I went to my local Toyota dealer for a diagnosis of the problem. Upon inspection and testing, their service advisor stated, "the emissions system has malfunctioned since water has leaked into the emission system & its charcoal canister". The source of the water occurred since the fuel filler tube housing no longer was properly attached/secured to the vehicle. This allowed rwater coming down the side of the vehicle to enter through the fuel filler door by the fuel cap into the charcoal canister. To remedy the problem, the fuel filler assembly along with gaskets, some electronic and the charcoal canister required replacement for the emission system to properly function and to be in compliance with epa standards. The total cost of the repair $1,400 which Toyota would not cover since it was not under recall, nor would they consider paying under my extended 6 yr 100,000 mile warranty since that expired July 5, 2013. I find it incredible that Toyota would not pay for these repairs since they involve emissions as well as a safety issues. Based on my review of various blogs covering Rav4's, this is a common problem and Toyota admits no fault. As with all issues with Toyota they deny they have design/safety issues with any of their vehicles - sudden acceleration, steering suspension & braking. It took me repeated service visits to get them to replace the front steering rack under my extended warranty. I feel my fuel filler assembly and charcoal canister repair is a safety issue since gasoline could easily leak out down the tube on gasoline overfill and cause a fire if it reached the exhaust system. 20 yrs ago I had a similar issue with a Honda which was repaired under a recall at no charge. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

2003 Rav4 with automatic transmission started having trouble accelerating from a stop. There seemed to be hardly any power when the gas pedal was pressed, and then about 5-8 seconds later the car would jolt into gear. This problem would happen also when increasing speed, or any time the gas pedal was pressed down. The car was taken to an auto shop where they said the transmission was broken and needed to be replaced. I am a very conservative driver (I never try to accelerate too quickly), and this trusty Toyota hasn't ever had any engine problems. . . Ever! there are less than 77,000 miles on the vehicle.

At approximately 18:30 on December 27, 2011, I experienced an unintended acceleration event in my 2010 Toyota Rav4. I was stopping for a red light on pacific coast highway in seal beach, California at the corner of first street when I noticed it was difficult to apply the brake, and the car did not appear to want to stop. I applied the brake more forcefully and was eventually able to stop in the left hand turn lane, however the car kept lurching forward as if it wanted to break free of the brake. Having heard the widespread publicity regarding the unintended acceleration problem in Toyota vehicles, and having previously experienced the problem on one occasion over a year earlier, I thought this might be the issue. I put the car into park and the engine immediately revved up to an alarming rate. I turned off the ignition in panic before I was able to look at the tachometer. However, judging by the sound and later experimentation with revving while parked, I believe the rpm must have been in the 4000-5000 range at the time of the incident. I was particularly shaken by this event because I had already had the recall service performed that was supposedly intended to address the unintended acceleration issue. This recall service was performed may 10, 2011 at desert Toyota in tucson, arizona. I had experience the unintended acceleration issue once before, but it was not nearly as dramatic. I do not recall the details, but it was in southern arizona in early 2011 and my memory is that tapping the accelerator and brake pedals restored the car's operation to normal fairly quickly. I was little concerned about it happening again since the recall service had been performed.

While driving at normal highway speeds I passed through a puddle on the highway and during this event, my charcoal filter assembly was torn off my Rav4. It was left dangling below the car and had to be replaced. I did some research on the internet and was surprised to hear that this is a very common problem and that Toyota has designed a shield for this filter assembly on newer models, so I figured I would lodge a complaint, as this is highly unusual to have a piece of your car tear off during normal highway driving.

Pulled into parking space at work doing about 5-10 mph. Slowed to turn into space, giving car just enough gas , when car launched forward hitting a chain link fence. I did not have any brakes, so I tried pumping brakes before impact . Brake pedal was completely to the floor, so I used emergency brake to stop car before it caused further damage to car and fence. I did not report incident, but took car to lacey collision, and they estimated damage at $1500. This is not the first time this has happened, I have reported this to two different Toyota dealerships. . Nothing was ever done. They only admitted that yes, my brakes were a bit 'soft'. But car was not on their recall list.
On December 20, 2010, I was pulling my 2007 Toyota rav 4 into a parking space at strip mall. I had pulled in and then backed up to pull in straighter. My foot was on the brake as I was changing from reverse to drive and I gave the car some gas to get me into the space. Suddenly, the engine revved as if the gas pedal was to the floor. The car lurched forward and crashed into the concrete base of a light pole. All this happened in the space of a few seconds and maybe 10 to 15 feet. After the car was stopped, I looked down to see if somehow I accidentally hit the gas but my foot was squarely on the brake. Friends and onlookers helped me until my husband arrived. Luckily I was not injured but very shaken up. My husband took pictures from every angle plus a view of the floor area around the gas and brake pedal. The gas pedal did not get caught on the floor mat. I know this was a case of sudden acceleration, no doubt about it. After my husband finished talking to our insurance agent, we had the car towed to the Toyota dealer which happened to be only several miles away. The incident was reported to the service advisor exactly as it happened. She indicated that they ( the dealer ) had no reports of sudden unintended acceleration. We asked the dealer to investigate as it was our contention that this was not driver error. On December 21, the dealer service advisor called us back to let us know that they could not do anything else to the vehicle as Toyota experience would be conducting an investigation. We spoke to the Toyota spokesman explaining what happened and he asked us what we would like Toyota to do . We said we would like the car repaired and the acceleration module changed out at Toyota's expense. He then explained that it might take up to 74 days for them to complete their investigation. We also explained to our insurance what we were doing. We feel Toyota will drag this out to get us to use our insurance but we know what happened and we're sticking to our story.
When trying accelerate my Toyota 2006 rav 4, at any speed car will hesitate for second and suddenly accelerate to much faster speed that is intended. I have checked, ignition system, found nothing, my personal experience. In heavy rain fall have water inside the car at front passenger side coming from air blower area. Dealer says they don't know anything about both issues. These issues are not a onetime issue and happens all time.

When I drive my Toyota 2010 Rav4 over a significant bump or pothole, the car lunges forward/accelerates. It doesn't last long , but I certainly have not had this happen with my previous cars (vw passat wagon, Ford grand cherokee, etc. ).
On the day indicated below when I was driving my 2010 Toyota Rav4 to a store, I tried to slow down the vehicle to a left turn but it failed to drop the speed. Then I realized it probably has the problem people currently complain. So, I switched the shift to neutral position and I heard the engine surge at a very high speed for several seconds and then slowed down. I stopped the vehicle and checked the gas pedal which was not sticky. Since then, I continued to use this vehicle without same issue. I checked with my car dealer a month ago about the recall and was told that my vehicle is not included in recall list by the VIN number.
I was driving my 2009 Toyota Rav4 on Monday April 5, 2010 and was stopped at a red light with my foot on the brake when I felt gas seemed to rev up. I felt like the car would have lurched forward had not my foot been on the brake. Also today after moving forward my car maintain a 20 miles an hour speed without my pressing on the gas pedal, April 13th, 2010.

At about noon on 2/3/10- our 2009 Toyota rav 4 sudden acceleration (or stuck gas pedal) caused me to rear end another car that was stopped at a red light. I was moving very slowly about 5-10mph, just gliding because the car in front of me had been stopped by the light and it was just starting to slowly move as the light turned green. I had my foot on the brake, and the rav 4 seemed to accelerate, causing me to press as hard as I could on the brakes, but I could not stop before hitting the car in front of me. It seemed as if the Rav4 just accelerated by itself. The rav 4 has been towed to a repair facility. 4 hours before this happened, we had the rav 4 at our Toyota dealer for inspection of the gas pedal and it was confirmed that it had one of the suspect assemblies. But they said they could not do anything, as they had no instructions or parts yet from Toyota and said we would be notified when the time came.
On 2 occasions, my 2009 Toyota rav 4 with a serial # beginning with a "j" experienced sudden acceleration. Although there was no damage on either incident, the dealership stated that there was little they could do as the recall for sudden acceleration did not apply to Toyota rav 4's with a "j" serial code. I explained upon bringing the vehicle in on 2/17/10 to dch Toyota, rt. 9 so. , freehold, NJ,, that both of my sudden acceleration cases occurred before the recall notice and that I, in fact called dch on 1/13/10 & on 1/24/10 and reported the problem. On both occasions I was told by the service department to bring the car in for service but it was not subject to recall because of the "j" serial. I did bring the car in on 2/17 and was told, after inspection, that since no sudden accel. Was experienced during the service, nothing could be done and no remedial action could be taken. My contention, and the reason for my complaint is that sudden acceleration in the rav 4 is, without a doubt, occurring in this car with a "j" serial # and should be covered by the recall and remediation should extend to this vehicle. I do believe that other "j" serial cars have been involved in accidents which causes me to further question Toyota's existing recall parameters.
We have a 2006 Toyota rav 4. On Dec. 18, my wife, pulled out of a parking lot and the vehicle started accelerating faster than she wanted to go. She pushed on the foot brake but could not slow or stop the vehicle. When she let up on the brake, it sped up more, and even applying the brake as hard as she could, it did not stop. She bumped into the back of another SUV and then a little further on jumped the curb and smashed into a concrete filled steel pole which did major damage to the right front. She then managed to turn into a parking lot and got it stopped using the hand brake. My insurance company opted to repair the vehicle. At my request, the body shop took it to the Toyota dealer who checked it out mechanically and electrically and, of course, declared all systems within "factory specifications" in thinking back, my wife can recall other times when the rav 4 seemed to accelerate more than she expected, but she was able to control it. She has been driving over 50 years and is a cautious driver. During this wild ride she conscientiously checked to see that she was pressing on the brake pedal and not the accelerator. The floor mat is secured by little hooks so it cannot slide up under the accelerator or brake pedals. (in the idle position, the accelerator pedal is almost 2 inches above the floor).
I have already made a previous complaint about acceleration problems with my Rav4 that caused an accident. I am still having issues regarding this problem. My car will suddenly jump while barely pushing the gas pedal. It does not do it all the time but will do so randomly which is even worse because one doesn't know when it will happen. It is scary driving a vehicle that from minute to minute you have no idea when this will happen again. It did it again just yesterday as I was taking off from an intersection, I barely missed the car in front of me. I wished Toyota would acknowledge this situation as serious before someone dies. I know of the recall with floor mats but it doesn't include my car. I have read that there are others with this same issue. Why is Toyota not acknowledging this situation? are they waiting for someone to die?.
