I purchased my 2011 Rav4 on 10/19/10, with 3 miles on the odometer. As of 1/31/11 the odometer now reads 2605 miles. After driving the vehicle for 1 week I noticed that the gas consumption was very high. I drove the vehicle to harrisburg, PA which is only 120 miles from my home in philadelphia, PA and burned a full tank of gas upon my return home. The vehicle is suppose to get 28 mpg on the highway which equals to 420 miles on a 15 gallon tank. Also, I have a 24 mile roundtrip commute each day and by the end of the week my tank is almost empty. I took the car into the dealership to service the complaint but was told, as I suspected, that nothing was wrong. I am filling the tank up on average every 4 days. I also notice that as I am driving, the fuel gauge needle is moving downward. No one seems to take my complaint seriously and I am always fed the story of how well made and sophisticated that the engine and components are. I have been purchasing Toyota certified used vehicles for the past 20 years and have never had any complaints. This is my first brand new vehicle and I am regretting purchasing it. I want this matter throughly investigated but I am always told the same thing. I am not a mathematician but I can count and my 2011 Rav4 gas mileage is horrendous.

Electronic power steering (eps) and fuel gauge problems:
I bought my brand new 2009 Toyota Rav4 sport v6 4x2 on may 09, 2009 in houston texas. It was on Dec. 13, 2009 that I was traveling on interstate highway I-10 from houston to new york city. I was in the middle lane of I-10 between exit 775a and 776a. I was traveling at 65 mph. Suddenly, I heard a "click" from the dash board and the eps warning light came on and then I lost the electronic power steering, I felt my steering wheel so hard and could not turn it. I realized that I was in the very dangerous driving situation. I tried to calm down and put my foot firmly on the brake pedal and started slowing down my car. It took me almost ten minutes to move my car to the road shoulder and stopped. I called mr. Zhu - a manager of sales department at my Toyota dealership in houston texas immediately and reported this incident. He found me a phone number of the service department at fred haas Toyota nearby and asked me to call them and get my car towed and checked. I called the number a couple of times however, nobody was there then. I tried to restart car engine for five times or more, I finally solved the eps problems. I called mr. Zhou again, and told him that nobody was there answering my phone call. I asked him for the address of the fred haas Toyota. I drove my sick car for 30 minutes very carefully to fred haas Toyota; unfortunately, the service department was closed on Sunday. I called mr. Zhu again and told him about it. Then I drove my car back to houston on interstate I-45, after 15 minutes driving, the same problems happened again. . . . . . After that my fuel gauge was not read correctly, it showed only 1/2 fuel of my fuel tank after I filled it up. Moving straight forward and making turns should not be an issue. I believe eps problems are more serious than the gas pedal problem, because this effects immediately and directly. I have been worrying about my safety driving my car since I experienced the dangers!.

I bought my 2007 Rav4 in November 2006 and took the car back to the dealer after a couple of months because of this humming/whistling/whining noise that others have complained. However, my humming noise is intermittent which makes it hard to find, and it seems to be more prevalent in the warmer months, not the colder months. I asked my mechanic about it, but he couldn't recreate the noise the day my car was in the shop. However, I intend to take it back there if I'm ever driving it in the area and the noise crops up again. To me it sounded like some kind of vapor pressure noise and I was initially thinking that it might be coming from my gas tank when vapor pressure built up if my tank was low on gas. But, that wasn't the case either. It will happen whether I have a full tank or almost empty tank. . . Just not consistently. It is very annoying and I hope others write in to complain about it as well.

Fuel tank access door has design defect. When opened (to gain access to fuel cap), it rubs the edge of the vehicle body panel surrounding the access door. This is also a problem with model 2001, as a friend has reported the same complaint. As for the vehicle glass, it was scratched easily from road debris being rubbed by the wipers, and also inside of the glass grit. This has never occurred with previous vehicles owned, so the glass must be unusually soft. **** dims 11 ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****760761.

I cannot fill the gas tank on this vehicle; gas gauge never registers as full. Tops off several times, cannot tell when tank is full. Dealership tells me it needs new sending unit, which neither they nor Toyota will pay for.
