36 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 09/16/2006

Around 10 months ago I was driving down interstate 27 with my sunroof completely closed. There were no other vehicles around me. Suddenly I heard a loud noise, I swerved a quite bit and then I noticed glass was falling on my head. I looked up to see my sunroof was gone. I immediately went to the dealership where they replaced the glass on warranty. Since it was replaced at no charge to me I was satisfied. The second incident happened last Saturday night (9-16-06). I was driving home with the sunroof closed. There were no other cars around. We heard a quieter noise that sounded like glass shattering; we looked at all the windows but saw nothing wrong. The next day I noticed that the wind deflector was completely shattered. Most of the pieces of glass were still there except the leading edge of the glass. I've had the plastic film put on the car according to the recall but it isn't completely effective because there is glass missing. The dealership wouldnt replace the part on warranty. I am now in a dispute with scion to get them to replace the deflector. My car is still under warranty yet they won't replace the defective part stating that they have a policy against replacing glass for any reason. I have tried for a week now to resolve this with scion. They have told me that a representative will call me the next business day yet they dont call me. I have told them every time that I called that I cant drive my car until this has been resolved. . Read more...

37 Sun Roof problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 09/14/2006

The moonroof in my 2006 scion shattered as I was driving down the highway. There was no impact from any item that caused this defect. I have filed a formal complaint with scion; reference # 200609141416. *note* the wind deflector is in the up position as if the moon roof was retracted, yet, the roof was closed when this happened. I am scheduled to take the vehicle by the scion dealership tomorrow.

38 Sun Roof problem of the 2007 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 09/04/2006

The 2005 and 2006 Scion Tc were recalled for a defect in the wind deflector where a piece of debris hit the wind deflector at highway speeds and it would shatter. I just bought a 2007 Scion Tc last Tuesday and it did the same exact thing. I was on the freeway and I did not even see anything hit my car but I heard something, and then there was glass coming into my car through the sunroof. I have contacted scion and they had said my car is not included in the recall and to take it into the dealership. The dealership said it is not a warranted part. I should contact the parts director and he has not called me since.

39 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 08/10/2006

Purchased my vehicle in March 2005. I have had it in the shop three (3) times for the moon roof. The moon roof rattles horribly and the dealership as taken the glass out and replaced it saying "that Toyota has done all that they know what to do with that particular situation". I find this unacceptable. I have also had my car in the shop five (5) times for the back hatch. The hatch makes a horrible rattle when just driving on regular roads. This problem is still unfixed. My paint as with the numerous other amounts of complaints is chipping and bubbling up. It horrifies me to read all of these complaints regarding this vehicle. I can only anticipate on what could happen next.

40 Sun Roof problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 07/27/2006

I currently own the 2006 Scion Tc, in which this incident is regarding NHTSA action number pe06024. My stationary glass panel section of my Scion Tc's moonroof has been shattered by no physical contact to the glass. As I was opening the trunk to my car, the moonroof began to crack, spidering and completely shattering the glass. I brought the car to Toyota around 12 hours after the incident, in which Toyota is currently investigating this issue. However, I wanted to report this incident to you, considering this is clearly a defect in the Scion Tc's design. The Scion Tc that I own is barely three months old with 3700 miles to it, so I am hoping this complaint will get back to Toyota and repair my car.

44 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 06/14/2006

June 14, 2006. Was driving on the highway at around 65 mph with no other cars in front of me or to the side of me. Suddenly, without warning, the power moonroof of the car shattered, with a large portion of the glass entering the passenger cabin and striking me (the driver). Besides minor scratches and bruises from the falling glass and sunroof assembly, I did not suffer any injury. Drove immediately to the dealer, who provided me with a rental car while my car was being repaired. Upon picking up the car 4 days later, I was told that besides the glass, the entire sunroof assembly had to be replaced. Was also told that they could not find the cause of the failure. Pictures of the damage would be available upon request, if needed.

46 Sun Roof problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 05/25/2006

I was going down the highway and my sunroof shattered. Nothing was done to correct the failure. I was told it was simply a road hazard and it was no big deal that my insurance would pay for it.

47 Sun Roof problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 05/04/2006

I owned a Scion Tc 2006. I bought it on Jan 10, 2006. Few weeks ago, I started to notice and hear a rattle noise on the roof area. On may 4, 2006 while driving on the highway @ a speed of 55 mph. The moon roof snapped and shattered. The glass chunks fell into the driver and passenger, kind of like a glass chunks rains that actually may cut you. We were covered in glass. I lost control of the car, due to frighten and glass all over, swirled left and right. I'm so fortunate that I didn't harmed anyone next to me or other drivers on the road. I'm really worry about driving such car. There is no warning to the buyer when such purchase was made by the dealer or the company. I hope you will take a serious action fast before an innocent person life is taken. Please help. Thank you so much for taking the time to read my complaint. Please help. If you have any questions, please send me an email. Email reply on may 18, 2006 confirmed that it was the sun/moon roof (not the wind deflector) that shattered.

48 Sun Roof problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 05/02/2006

April 06, I bought a Scion Tc. I am 47 yrs old & wanted something sporty, couldn't afford over 20,000. So happy until 2 days ago, now do to hurricane katrina I commute to work. As I was traveling I heard & felt like an explosion on top of my roof. I thought maybe a plane dropped something, I was shaking & pulled off the highway, took quick look, it was late and I was all alone. The next day I went to the dealership their was glass all over. The wind deflector glass was shattered & pieces of glass missing. I went back across the street to the dealership and spoke with a salesman and he couldn't believe it, he said wait! their is a recall we can change it and fix it, go to service and ask for __. I could hear the salesman, you have to fix it! its a brand new car! the service rep finally came to my car and said we will fix it this time but if you drive away and it happens again then we wont because this car is not under the recall because the laminate has already been put on the car. I had no idea , he explained that the recall is to stop the shattered glass from coming into the car and injuring passengers or causing the driver to have an accident but that still can happen and big pieces of glass can fall in. I cried, I take my grandson (2) on weekends & he loves the sun roof. Service mgr said only thing I can do is leave the sun roof closed or trade in the car! I talked to manager of sales & he said call Toyota because he only sells the car he does not design them! now I have to trade a 1 month old car in or chance glass falling in my eyes while driving or injuring my family. I spent extra for side airbags so family would be safe & now they're afraid. I left the car @ dealership they wanted me to test drive a corolla, they will give me 16,000, I paid 18,500. I called Toyota scion, they didn't call me back today they said they would, I have no choice, because I wont let a new car hurt my family. They tell me the same thing can happen the very next day!.

49 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 03/15/2006

: the contact stated while driving between 55-70 mph the sunroof shattered. The sunroof was closed at the time of the incident. The contact is unaware of an object hitting the sunroof. The vehicle is at the dealership and they are unable to determine the cause of the failure. Email reply on may 19, 2006 shows (pictures) that it was the sun/moon roof (not the wind deflector) that shattered.

50 Sun Roof problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 02/21/2006

I was driving to work at approximately 8:30 in the morning at around 70 mph on hwy 40 in st. Louis when my sunroof exploded. The actual sunroof exploded and not the wind deflector. The sunroof was fully closed and the wind deflector was as well. I keep the sunroof cover open most of the time so I get more light into the car and as a result glass rained down into my car. Upon inspection, I found that the glass of the sunroof was completely shattered and did not crack like a spider-web, but like someone had set a bomb off on top of it. The wind deflector was undamaged. I contacted my dealer and they were very accusatory and said a rock or other debris must have broken it. I still fail to see how a rock big enough to shatter the glass like it did got by me with me seeing it. If a huge rock was bouncing in the middle of the road, I would have definitely seen it. Another thing that made that claim ridiculous was the fact that there were no large trucks or otherwise carrying anything within sight at the time it happened. Sunroof glass breakage. Pco.

51 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 12/22/2005

While driving my 2005 Scion Tc on the interstate highway, I heard a loud pop. After the pop I heard glass shattering and flying off the top of the car. The only thing protecting me from shattering glass was the sun shade. Yet, almost immediately glass started coming through the vent holes on the sun shade and falling down on my head and flying in from the sides. When I stopped to look at what had happened, it appeared that the top sun roof had exploded. Nothing had hit the car from the outside that I was aware of. I know that I would have seen it or heard something hit the car, not the loud pop that sounded like an explosion. I looked on your site and was able to see that other owners of scions have experienced this same problem. I am waiting on Toyota to determine how this will be fixed and if they will cover it. I will file a claim against them if they do not, as I think this should be a warranty issue or a safety issue with the dealer. I noticed on one complaint that the individual was forced to pay $900. For the repair themselves. Phone interview confirmed that it was the sun/moon roof that shattered.

52 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 10/11/2005

Sunroof makes a continuous rattling noise suggesting that it is not sitting in it's allocated space properly. This noise can be heard while the sunroof is open and especially while it is closed. This happens every day.

53 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 10/07/2005

I pulled into my drive way parked the car left it running sunroof was open front windows were down. Ran inside to grab something hear a glass explosion ran back out to find my sunroof spider cracked out and the edges gone. Lady that was walking her dog said the sunroof just exploded. Theres no holes nothing just cracks and glass all around the car and inside the car. I have pictures to. Email reply on may 18, 2006 shows (pictures) that it was the sun/moon roof (not the wind deflector) that was shattered.

54 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 09/20/2005

I was cruising in my 2005 Scion Tc at approximately 40 mph on a smooth road with the moon roof closed. Air temperature was in the high 90s and, as I had been driving about an hour, the interior had been cooled by the a/c. There was no traffic within sight either ahead or behind me and no trees, overpass, etc. , above. I heard a loud gunshot-sounding "bang" and found, when I pulled over, that the glass of the front wind deflector of the moonroof had shattered. There was no evidence of any object impacting the glass. Because the moonroof had been closed, glass particles did not enter the passenger compartment. The moonroof wind deflector glass was replaced by my local authorized dealer under warranty (after I called their attention to similar failures of other vehicles); the fragments of the old glass were removed and disposed of by the dealer. Subsequent to that, a "safety recall notice" (#ssc 50s) was received from the manufacturer and a "protective laminate" was applied to prevent glass fragments from entering the passenger compartment in the event a recurrence of the failure is experienced when the moonroof is in the open position. Contrary to this manufacturer's recall notice, I was not driving with the moonroof open, I was not driving at "highway speeds" and the glass was not impacted by road debris. I feel there is a flaw in the manufacturing process of the glass used in the tc's moonroof.

55 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 09/11/2005

I was driving my 2005 Scion Tc on the freeway with the sunroof closed. I heard a loud breaking sound and saw glass fly onto the freeway from my car. I pulled off the freeway and noticed that the glass from the deflector of the sunroof had shattered. The freeway was empty and nothing, not even a rock, had hit my car. I am not sure how it happened- but now I see lots of reports of this happening. I am just lucky that this happened when my sunroof was closed. I was also informed by Toyota that this would cost me $900 to fix. They were not going to cover it. I plan to fight this as it is supposed to be designed to perform under normal operating conditions. It sounds like faulty installation to me.

56 Sun Roof problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 09/02/2005

My boyfriend and I were driving my car on a clear, sunny day at highway speeds with the air conditioner running and all windows closed on I-495 in maryland, when we heard a loud pop. Thinking that there was something wrong with the car or the tires I pulled to the side of the road where I then discovered that it was the moon roof wind deflector shattered. Glass was falling in though the cover for the moonroof on our head. We ended up switching places and taking the back roads to the dealership. I called them and let them know what happened and found that they were very accusatory. We explained that we had not passed under any overpasses and no debris were observed either visually or heard while in the car coming from the road or another car. Once dropping it off they tried to make me feel as if it was me and that my insurance may have to handle it. After a month of dealing with them they returned the car with a new moon roof and freshly painted rear spoiler. Recently I found an article in the wall street journal stating that Toyota motor corp in recalling 71,000 05-06 Scion Tc's. That was a huge relief to me, seeing as the dealership made it seem that it was a very limited problem and only a few cases have come about.

57 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 09/01/2005

Every time I drive my car the sunroof rattles and it sounds as if there is shattered glass in there. I looked and tried to clean it all out but I never found any broken glass. But when ever I go over the smallest bump it sounds like the whole sunroof is going to shatter. I have read other reports of this happening and I think there might be a problem with the glass.

58 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 08/19/2005

Went out to car in the morning and the sun/moon roof deflector was shattered.

59 Sun Roof problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 08/15/2005

I was driving at about 35 mph with my sunroof open when debris of some sort hit my wind deflector. It shattered the glass wind deflector and covered the interior of my car with glass. I brought my car to the dealership that I purchased it from, only two weeks earlier, and they said that I had to pay for it. The part is $568. The dealership also charged me $70 just to close my sunroof. It is still broke because I cannot afford the part.

60 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 07/11/2005

I have a 2005 Scion Tc, last Monday I arrived home and after five minutes while I was by the car I heard a crack and when I look at the car I saw that the back moonroof cracked without any reason. The way it cracked it is very weird because it cracked all the way around and after that over the night it start courving upward and it start feling in to pieces.

61 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 06/02/2005

2005, Toyota, Scion Tc, vehicle's sun roof (not the wind deflector) exploded. There was no apparent cause for this to happen. Glass shattered all over consumer and the freeway. Consumer stated that nothing hit the sunroof for it to shatter, but if even a small item could cause that explosive type of damage, it should be different glass. Sunroof is repaired but car paint is scratched everywhere and consumer still find bits of glass in vehicle. The sunroof was closed at the time. Phone interview (may 19, 2006): dealer representative confirmed that it was the sun/moon roof that shattered.

62 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 05/19/2005

While driving my 2005 Scion Tc I heard a loud pop and the back moon roof had cracked. It was the same type of noise I heard when my front deflector shattered. The moon roof did not cave in when it first happened it was just spider web cracked throughout. But on the way to the dealership part of the middle ended up caving in. The dealership said because the glass was angled up it was like something from inside or pressure caused it. If something had fallen on it the glass would have been angled downwards. It was replaced but only after much questioning because this was the second time it had happened and supposedly "I have been the only one to have had these problems". I am currently waiting on parts to come in that they broke while repairing the moon roof.

63 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 04/15/2005

While driving with the sun roof open, the front deflector of the assembly shattered, spraying pieces of broken glass into the passenger compartment, causing me to lose control of the vehicle as I was hit in the face and head by glass. I was able to maintain control of the car as a piece of glass hit my sunglass lens, saving me from a possible eye injury. The interior of the car was littered with sharp, jagged pieces of glass and thankfully I was alone in the vehicle, saving a passenger from possible injury. I have yet to contact a dealer or scion but will do so after the weekend. I am aware of other reports and complaints with regard to the same thing happing to others. Scion obviously engineered a fragile piece of glass designed to stand nearly perpendicular to the road with the vehicle in motion and sun roof open. I have recently noticed a popping sound coming from the roof indicating to me some sort of stress in the structure. While not injured during the incident, I did get cut cleaning the sharp glass from the interior of the car. The vehicle I am reporting is a 2005 scin tc. I might also note that the 888 phone number listed on this page is not operable.

64 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 03/04/2005

While driving with the sun roof open the glass deflector broke covering the consumer in glass. The consumer was traveling at 55 mph. The glass didn't appear to be safety glass because it broke into large sharp pieces. The consumer's eye was scratched by a piece of glass. Consumer want the manufacturer to investigate this problem and change the way this reflector is constructed for the safety of all owners.

65 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 01/23/2005

Contact owns a 2005 Toyota Scion Tc. The contact stated that while vehicle was being warmed up on January 23, 2005 the wind deflector for the sun roof broke. As he was getting something from the vehicle and shut the door the deflector broke. The contact stated until he saw the investigation article he thought the breakage was due to the temperature or some other type of normal condition. The local service dealer referred the contact to a local glass shop to have the problem repaired. There is an open investigation of this problem, , the NHTSA investigation ea05013. The consumer had the wind deflector repaired. The consumer contacted the manufacturer.

66 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 10/16/2004

I was driving down the highway at approx 70 mph. I had the sun roof opened. While driving I heard a loud crack and glass came pouring in from the sunroof opening. I went straight to the dealership by my house. The front panel that angles up was broken all around the entire piece of glass. They said they could not see a point of impact where something may have hit. He said he could still hear it cracking as we were standing there talking. He said since there was no point of impact it should be covered under warranty. (I've only had the car a month. ) I am currently awaiting for the piece to come in. This has happened at least one other time that I've heard of from a scion web site. I can only imagine what could have happened if I hadn't ducked down when I heard the crack. Even with ducking down I had glass down the front of my shirt, the back of my shirt and in between my back the the seat of the car.

67 Sun Roof problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 07/18/2004

I have had numerous problems with my 2005 Scion Tc since purchase on 7/16/2004. The day after purchase the front tire was sitting on the rim. Terrible problems with scratches it seems as though you look at it and it scratches and the paint is peeling and bubbling all over, the power lock button fell inside the door within the 1st week I had the car. Have been to dealership 3 different times concerning the sunroof making terrible rattling noises and it sounds like the whole top of the car is moving when you make a turn, then after it rains, I live in FL and no visible water is on the top, open the window and water on the lip of the sunroof leaks water all over you. They have took the car apart for sun roof and can't fix, tore out the headliner. Also the inside metallic parts scratch easily, the dealership tech destroyed the part around the gear shift. My car insurance has doubled since I bought this car because of accidents I have less than 9,000 miles on this car, have met with gm, and everyone thinks your crazy. This is the worst car I have ever purchased and it has been nothing but a nightmare, the people at the dealership say OH your the only one with the paint problem , it's wear and tear, yet we have another new vehicle that gets driven to work every day and the paint looks better than my car. I am very disappointed with Toyota and I traded in a Toyota to get this car, I guarantee you I will never buy another scion, I have wondered why they are not advertised on tv, now I know why. I spend my time going to the doctors and the dealership being treated like an idiot. They kept my car 5 days last time and want it again. If your car leaks like mine please report it as they have had an outside rain doctor check it out an it says it's designed that way, yat it did not do this in the beginning. I hate to trade it in and pass this nightmare on to someone else. I have come across tons of complaints and many service advisories.
