Failure Date: 05/01/2016

I experienced a problem with engine warning and vsc trac off lights going on. The check engine light also came on. My family and I were on a trip and our Sequoia all of a sudden lost power. It slowed down dramatically even though the engine was fine. It was a very dangerous situation because we were on an interstate where the speed is 70 mph. I also experienced all the brakes making a massive grinding noise while going slow into a restaurant. (the brakes have less than 3000 miles on them. ) the parking brake light also comes on periodically.

While driving, the check engine light, vsc light, brake light all came on. Vehicle would not accelerate past 40 mph. Diagnostic codes c1223, c1247, c1310 came back. Checking the internet, this is a common issue with this vehicle and a recall should be issued.

4 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2015

Tonight when backing out of my driveway I heard a loud grinding noise and my brake pedal was very hard to push. The brake light, trac off and vsc trac lights all were on. I parked the vehicle and cycled the engine and as soon as I drove away it happened again. I have had problems with just the brake light coming on then going off after turning off the key but this is the first time all 3 have come on and I have had no brakes at all. I have researched and noticed this is a common problem and yet Toyota has failed to issue a recall on this problem. I was very lucky my wife was not driving the car with my daughter in the vehicle.

7 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2014

Vsc trac, abs and brake alerts light up on dash board, noise when vehicle is initially turned on, the noise disappears after a few minutes but the alerts stay on. The vehicle also loses power (but the engine keeps running, just no power to accelerate) if I make a quick turn, loss of power lasts for a few seconds then turns back on.

8 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2014

While driving my vehicle on the highway to work, my brake warning light on the dash came on. I pulled over cut the truck off then back on, the light was gone. The next day driving home from work, it was pouring down rain and the brake warning light came on again, along with the trac and vsc warning lights. I was only driving about 25 mph since I was in the city and not on the highway yet. I pulled over cut the truck off and then back on, the lights were out, but within another mile they were back on. I avoided the highway since my brakes were having problems and it was pouring rain. The next day they were off so I drove back to work but when I was on the way home they all came back on, this time it was the afternoon and not raining so I took it to the Toyota dealership. They ran the codes and said my codes were c1247 stroke sensor and c136 master press sensor - they said this was part of a skid control ecm that controlled my antilock braking system! very scary to think my brakes were not functioning properly. I was told it could be fixed for $1042. 82 and may also need to replace the master cylinder at $715. 85. When I looked up the problem online I found that this was very common failure with 2003-05 models and that Toyota had already recalled the 2003 problem. My service tech said that he was not aware this was a common problem, although there is a service bulletin out for it. I was very scared to drive, but the tech said that my brakes still worked but that the anti lock braking system will not stop "on a dime" but will skid or slide. When I asked to speak to the service manager (all were on vacation) I spoke with the lead tech on shift, who told me alot of what I read online was junk and there was no recall on my 2005 Sequoia but he gave me a number to Toyota complaint department:1-800-331-4331. I have not driven my vehicle since taking it home that day.

9 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2014

Abs system would engage as vsc skid control light and brake light appears. System would reset after ignition was turned off and restarted. Mishap occurred several times on dry, smooth road surface at a low rate of speed with minimal pressure on brake pedal. I took car to dealer for repair. They replaced skid control ecu. Car repeated symptoms on my way home. I took it back to the dealer. They replaced brake booster. Car is working normally now.

10 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2014

Went to apply the brakes and they were solid and the vehicle would not stop. All of the anti-lock brake lights lit up on the dash and the ant-lock brakes engaged. After pumping the brakes repeatedly the pedal came back to normal and was able to stop the vehicle. Placed it in park and turned off the ignition and then restarted the vehicle and it braked normally after that. This brake has happened on several occasions.

11 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2014

Trac off, vsc trac , abs and parking brake lights all came on and stayed on while driving. Vehicle has been doing this intermittently for about a month now on a regular basis. Has done it over the past couple years but maybe once every several months. Resets after vehicle is turned off. Looked up issue on internet and was surprised to find all the posts about this issue and the lack of Toyota to recall whatever is causing this issue.

12 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2013

While driving home on interstate 15 in California brake pedal would not depress. After several hard foot applications pedal finally engaged. This is after months of service on this vehicle for brake problems starting with spongy and inconsistent pedal and vcs, abs and brake lights coming on and staying on. Dealership replaced on board computer, brake booster, brake master cylinder, brake pads and problem still there. I am the original owner and bought this vehicle new. This is a serious problem and just a matter of time before an accident occurs. This vehicle is now back in the shop once again.

13 Brake Light On problem

The vehicle slid with the illumination of the traction control and brake warning lights. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where it was stated that the abs system failed. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 111,000.

15 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

While applying the brakes there is a grinding noise coming from the front of the vehicle with a shudder and the vsc, trac off and brake lights come on and stay on. This has happened several times recently. Also the brake light will come on at random times. Everything resets when the ignition is turned off. When the vehicle shudders it does not seem to be slowing down. I have checked the Toyota web site and they do not show any recalls. Also I have checked on-line and there are several people that seem to be having the same problem. This is a very unsafe problem and I feel that Toyota needs to fix this with a recall. They are aware of the problem and it is very expensive fix.

16 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2013

Loss of abs system, vsc & traction control on interstate at high rate of speed barely avoided collisions. Unsafe. Vsc/abs/e brake light all on.

17 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2013

My vsc, trac and brake light all came on all of sudden with a large boom sound. The car stalled on me in an intersection. The lights go off once car is turned off and then after turning car back on they will come on about 5 minutes after driving. Car loses power every so often now. Dealer said it needs a new computer.

18 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

Vsc, trac, abs and brake lights would all come on a once. They would usually reset after on the next start. It has progressed over the past year to the lights staying on most of the time and only occasionally resetting to off. I have no abs or stability control due to this malfunction. Even with the lights on, there were no codes on system when I went to the dealer. They recommend replacing the skid control ecu which is very expensive. This seems to be a very common problem.

19 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2012

The brake light constantly goes on and off. Trac off, vsc trac and check engine lights all come on. A loud rattling noise coming from the front end of vehicle and vibration the engine will not accelerate randomly while driving and the trac control light goes on at the same time.

21 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2012

When backing out of garage and applying brakes, the abs motor was heard and then the brake light came on. Then the vsc trac, vsc off and abs lights came on. The brake pedal felt mushy so a visit to dealer was made. The concern was addressed with service, and they came back with : "test drove car and inspected brakes. Found dtc's c1223, c1244, c1247, c1310. Provided estimate for updated skid control ecu @ $905 + tax". As the customer, I declined to schedule. Then during a past winter storm, backing out of driveway again, the same thing occured. Very concerned that this braking system is defected in any wet/snowy/ice weather. I have had to divert to driving my 1998 Honda accord in snow instead of the Sequoia. I am very concerned driving this Sequoia with my kids in car and braking at anytime. I feel an updated software/logic in ecu or an updated skid control ecu is valid enough to say they have a known issue that is 'safety' related, and Toyota should buck up covering this as warranty. I have contacted Toyota motor sales, USA, inc. And my case is filed at their headquarter office under my name and file #1302120501. They stated their is no customer compliance issued recall/bulletin or warranty available to cover my concern due to its age and mileage.

22 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2012

Slowing down to turn the vsc trac< trac off < check engine<brake lights come on. This has happened three times and I temporarily lose control of braking and excelleration. This is dangerous and nearly caused me to enter traffic in an intersection.

23 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2012

While driving, the brake warning light, vsc off light, and vsc trac light all came on. Pulled over and shut engine off. Restarted the car and lights were initially off but came right back on as soon as I started driving. Had advance auto parts hook computer to it, and it isn't throwing a code at all.

25 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2012

Vsc, trac off, and emergency brake lights all stayed on after car was started. For the next week or so they would go off then come back on and then stayed on continually. I took it to my dealership on June 16, 2012 and they said the skid control computer needed replaced and they had to order the part. On June 19, 2012 they replaced this part at a charge of $1013. 56. On June 22, 2012 all these lights have again come on. I was told at the time of the initial diagnosis there had been a bulletin issued about this issue. I ask why it wasn't recalled if it was a known safety issue and they just said it was a bulletin not a recall.

26 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2011

Toyota - there is very serious problem with the vbs, skid control, braking system with the Toyota 2005 Sequoia!!!!! my brakes locked up and I had no control of the car in terms of handling or braking power - lucky for me I drive like a cautious grandmother and was driving slowly stopping at a routine stop. This event happened after months and months of taking the car in. After this serious event I knew that it was not a problem not to be worried about. . . . Toyota replaced the skid control computer - close to 1000. I was told this was a 99% fix. Fastforward and the light is on again about a month later. . . . Now they claimed the master cylinder was at fault for another near thousand dollars. The repairing dealership serviceman assured me they finally got it and said he would feel very safe for me to travel out of town. I was hesitant, but did leave to go out of town. . . . Only to find myself at yet another dealership with the same brake lights coming on. . . . . And then going off when they went in to the service stall. They still have the car as I refused to take it back and they state until the problem "recreates itself" they are at a loss to date. To me to take the chance to recreate the loss of control of the car. . . . And the braking system is utterly nuts. In short, I will not be driving that car ever again. Nor do I want any other person in that potential "death trap. " if the national highway safety does not step in. . . . . I am telling you. . . . There will be deaths!!!!! I have no question in my mind over this issue!!!!! please contact me and recall this for the life of somebody.

27 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2011

My 2005 Toyota Sequoia has been having intermittent brake lights coming on and off for months. Usually when I would turn the car off the lights would go off - only to return again for no apparent reason. I have brought the car in many times only to hear that the lights have to stay on for good to analyze and or fix it. . . . . A Toyota dealership in savannah made this comment on my last full service appt and made the same reply yesterday. Yesterday while braking on a clear day at a slow rate of speed at a routine light the brakes made a terrible grinding noise with an almost wreck caused by the this failure and all the brake, abs and vcs lights coming on. Today I replaced the skid control computer at a dealership. . . For a price of one thousand dollars! 2 dealerships said this is step one in the problem and that "hopefully" it will not happen again. As the mother of a small child, I am at all happy with this answer as I know this is a real safety issue!!!!! had I been on the highway my child and I might not have made it as all control was lost. I think a recall is needed!!!!!!!!! I have read of many reports of 2005's with the same problem. Please contact me. Thanks.

29 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2010

While driving my 2005 Toyota Sequoia the brake light and vsc trac lights come on for no reason. I took my car to the dealership to get it repaired and they tightened the emergency brake. 5 minutes down the road it came back on, so I took the car back and they said it needed a new brake computer system, so we replaced it, that evening the lights came on again and now they are saying I need a new power brake booster. I don't think they know what is going on, one of the guys admitted he knew this was a problem but b/c not enough people have complained their has not been a recall. So the car is still not fixed and we worry about our families safety. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

30 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2010

Brake warning light comes on periodicaly. Vsc light shows on and off. All three lights come on and off. Traction control is activated without warning. I am reluctant to take in to the shop, since many of the compaints have spent much $$ and no results. This is very similar to the issue the 2003 models were having, which Toyota recalled the problem. This needs to be addressed on all models and all years that are affected. This vehicle is used by my wife and three kids. It is stressful knowing that this vehicle could potentially harm my family.

31 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/31/2010

Toyota Sequoia skid control ecu on a 2005 model, failed, causing inconsistent braking response among multiple lights detecting failures that are related to the part the brake light continuously went off along with he vsc since may of 2010 have had it in to Toyota 3 times for the problem the last time they finally were able to tell me it was the skid control ecu and it was not a recall item despite the recall on the 2003 Sequoia's.

35 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/23/2009

We just purchased a used 2005 toyoyta Sequoia sr5 4wdon 01/23/2009. Almost immediately noticed that the brake warning lights kept coming on intermittently so in the intrest of our safety we took it in to a Toyota dealer and got it looked at. The dealership said the skid control ecu was bad and throwing the codes c1223 and c1247 and the cost to replace the ecu is around $2400 dollars after doing a few google searches I find out that this is a very widespread problem and cannot understand why there hasn't been a recall for such an important and exspensive part of the vehicle.
