1 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2018

Toyota extended the warranty coverage for repairs related to illumination of the check engine light (malfunction indicator light) due to moisture/water in the air injection pumps and/or air switching valves for select Sequoia trucks. It should be required to extend it to all Sequoia trucks as it clearly recognizes this pump and valve assembly is defective in this model. The coverage extends for the lesser of 10 years or 150,000 miles but instead should be for the greater of the two. This repair costs $4000 and typically occurs when the truck value is near $7000. My truck is experiencing this problem and will not accelerate above 50 mph which can be dangerous.

2 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2016

Vsc vsc traction control lights comes on as well as the check engine light. The vehicle accelerates poorly. This makes for a very dangerous situation because the vehicle can slow dramatically at highway speeds. Lights go off for a little while when the battery is disconnected but all lights and acceleration problems return shortly. Owners have spent thousands of dollars replacing parts without a long term fix. Spouse will no longer drive the vehicle because of this dangerous problem. Totoya needs to fix this widespread problem.

3 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2016

A couple of days ago, when I was driving on the highway, my Sequoia suddenly stopped accelerating. Trac light and vsc light and check engine light came on. My speed would not go above 40mph and would not even brake. I was in the left lane and the cars behind me were going pretty fast and almost hit me. I am lucky there was no car in the right lane, so I pulled to that lane just in time. It was a scary moment for me because my kids were with me also. I always thought of Toyota of having safety in their cars, but when I came home to research what might be happening to the car, I found out many people are having the same exact problem and thus it is a manufacturers problem. I am suprised Toyota is not doing anything about this. Do they not care of the safety of the consumers? the milage on my Sequoia is only 39,000 and I do not drive it too often, and also have maintained it very well. We spend so much money on this car and this vehicle really was not worth it if it came with so many factory defaults. Please follow-up on this issue to have it resolved.

4 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2015

Vsc trac---vsc--check engine light--and then problems with acceleration on a street doing 35 mph. Would be very dangerous if it happened on a highway. Needs to be a recall- many similar complaints online.

5 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2015

The secondary injection pump has failed. It started with a loud winding noise anytime it was started at a cold start. The noise would last a few minutes. Then everything was fine. Then the entire thing went out and my check engine light came on along with all traction control has gone out. The vehicle will not accelerate at a normal speed and it is very dangerous while driving, especially on the interstate. Total cost to repair is over $3,000. 00 it is a well documented case of complaints and they have issued warranty for other year models for this part to be replaced- but not 2005.

6 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2013

My Sequoia will all of a sudden stop accelerating while driving. Trac light and vsc light and check engine light came on. I had to turn the ignition off and back on to get it moving again. . . I took it straight to the Toyota dealership. They did several tests. All but one test determined it was the engine control unit (of which is covered under a class action lawsuit). Because of that one test, they will not fix it. The service manager told me I had to keep driving it until it breaks down on the side of the road and they would tow it back there. Problem is. . . I might be dead in the truck depending on where and when it happens again. I am terrified to drive it! my Sequoia has been a lemon! I have previously had to replace 1)throttle body 2)throttle pedal position switch 3)brake booster 4)master cylinder and 5)skid control ecu. At 120,000 miles and all of those problems already? and now this issue?. . . . It must be a lemon!.

7 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2013

After cranking the car and driving for a few minutes, the following lights on the dashboard appeared: vsc off / vsc trac / check engine light. I entered the on ramp to the interstate and could not accelerate past 40 mph. Had to pull over and let the car "reset". Attempted to re-enter the interstate and the flow of traffic but car would not accelerate beyond 40 mph and I had my 3 small children in the vehicle. Very terrifying experience. Drove to a dealership that advised me a secondary hose had to be replaced on the engine. Later determined that Toyota released a technical bulletin and are aware of this issue but will not issue a recall. It is an extremely costly part to fix. Parts alone are $3200.

8 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2013

Check engine light came on and heard a low "supercharger" type noise from the engine. Took vehicle to dealer who diagnosed the problem as an air injection pump problem (codes p1442, p1445) which has been found on 2008-2010 Sequoias. Vehicle computer is operating in safe mode at a reduced capacity until repair is done. Toyota has extended the warranty to 10 years or 150,000 miles for this problem but not for the 2005 model year. Toyota acknowledged the problem in the 2008-2010 model years but would not consider any action or necessary communication for the 2005 model year.

Vsc trac---vsc--check engine light--and then problems with acceleration!!.

13 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2010

I was on my way home from work when the engine light came on for a few seconds then disappeared. Two days later the engine light came on again and the vehicle started to ride rough like it need a tune-up. The engine light disappeared and the vehicle drove fine until I reached home. The engine light, vsc off and vsc trac all came on and the vehicle was riding really rough. I took it to firestone so they could look at but they couldn't figure out the problem. So I took it to Toyota so they could fix the problem. They thought it was carbon build up around the cylinders, so they cleaned all eight cylinders but that didn't work. I still had to pay for it. The finale solution was for them to tear down the engine. They claimed that piston #3 wasn't working at its full capacity after running a compression test but they're not 100% sure. The cost for them to take the head off would be $862 and another $862 to put it back together plus what ever real problem is. The service guy at Toyota said that he has seen three similar problems like this and it cost the customer around $3000. My dvd player wasn't working so the tech tested it and stated that power was going to it and that it should work. Three weeks later the dvd player worked but now my back window didn't. When I push the button for the back window the back wiper comes on.

14 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2010

Our vsc/trac light and engine light simultaneously come on for an unknown reason. Our mechanic can not find a solution. Our emergency brake light comes on and off for no necessary reason as well. This has happened three or four times and no one can fix it. I am afraid to take it to Toyota because of the bad experiences posted online where consumers have received many verying answers, expensive repairs, and in some case, still no solution. We are in the market to buy a new car and it makes resale very difficult with these lights on and no answer as to why they are on. . . And no way to turn them off. . . So we wait. Many people have posted on the internet about this same problem in other 2005 Sequoias. Our computer keeps throwing varying and different errors. . . And my mechanic thinks the errors are not accurate. Could it be a computer or electrical malfunction? please help.

16 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2006

Check engine light and vsc/traction control lights keep coming on. Took it to Toyota of lewisville, texas on 30 June 06 and again to Toyota of killeen, texas on 15 July 06. Toyota of lewisville told me it was bad gas and that the problem was fixed. On 13 June 06 the light came on but went off after a couple of miles. On my way to dallas on 14 Jun 06 the same thing happened. Later that day on my way back from dallas the lights came back on and I took my Sequoia to Toyota of killeen on 15 July 06. They worked on my Sequoia until 25 July 06. I only had my truck for a day when the lights came back on. I took the truck back to the dealer the next day, 27 July 06, and the service department turned off the lights and an hour later told me my Sequoia was ready and that if the problem persisted to bring it back. Right there in the service bay the light came on and the dealership has had it ever since. I talked to the service rep and he informs me that the computer has been replaced and the problem persist. They checked the fuel and drained the fuel and the problem persist.
