I was accelerating onto the freeway today and it felt as if the left brakes came on along with a screeching sound and it made me swerve left. I was able to avoid swerving into merging traffic but I nearly crashed. Over the last week the vsc off lights have started going on and off and and after reviewing some literature on line it seems that hundreds of others have had the same type of problem. The 2003 Sequoia was actually recalled for this same thing. Very dangerous and now I will have to contact the dealer to see about it getting fixed before someone is killed. I have two young children and this really pisses me off. Even if there is not a recall I should have been made aware of the danger I was putting myself in. I have been happy with my truck for 8 years but after this incident and seeing what others have gone through I will never buy another Toyota!!!.

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Sequoia. The contact was driving approximately 35 mph and approaching a traffic stop. As the contact engaged the brakes, the transmission began to jerk with hesitation. In addition, the vsc off, vsc trac, check engine and brake warning indicators were illuminated. The warning indicators remained illuminated until the engine was turned off. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer where they advised that both the vsc computer and transmission were defective. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.

I own a 2001 Toyota Sequoia. I got my Sequoia brand new and now has over 88,000 miles. My Sequoia began to give me trouble about three months ago everytime I tried to put it into gear. The gear felt tight almost difficult to put into gear. On a recent trip to san francisco, I began to also notice a "buzzing" sound on the gas pedal. As I was driving up the grapevine on interstate 5, my transmission "popped" and I had no power. It turns out that the drive pin broke inside the transmission and caused major damaged to the transmission. At the time this happened my wife and two young kids were with me. We were extremely lucky we did not get into an accident because of this major breakdown. I have come to rely on my vehicle and have been really good at keeping it tuned and getting the required services to keep my car in shape. My concern is, has this happened to anyone else who owns a 2001 Toyota Sequoia? if not, can it happen again? thanks NHTSA.

In the past two weeks following a rapid braking my 2005 Toyota Sequoia surged forward upon acceleration requiring applying the brakes to stop the sudden lurching forward. This has occurred on three occasions over a ten day period.
2001 Toyota Sequoia. S10 appropriate handling- letter from regarding Toyota problems the consumer stated while driving on the interstate, the transmission went out completely and without prior warning.

2002 Toyota Sequoia transmission problem. The car stopped at a red light and died. There was no warning of any sort from the car. Everything was fine until this event. I was able to restart the car but once the gear is shift to drive or reverse, the transmission stalled and died. This problem kept on going so I called for a tow truck. Dealer said that it will cost at least $4400 to fix transmission and they have seen this problem more than once in Sequoia.
The issues with Toyota hasn't just started with the 2009/2010 acceleration problems. At least for the last ten years owners have complained about Toyota's vehicles and I have 1 complaint to post. We have a 2002 Sequoia with 122k miles. Our transmission went costing us approx. $4600. 00. We maintenance this truck religiously. I have been researching this issue online and found others having the same issue as me(some with only 70k miles, I guess we were luckily). Now this truck cost between 42k to 50k or so and 8 years later I am changing the freakin trans. How the heck(used lightly), does Toyota or any other auto maker get away with this stuff? I also have been researching to see how we could get Toyota held responsible for this piece of [xxx] trans. I had a chevy cavalier in the 90's cost around 9k . Never had 1 issue with it engine, engine light, transmission. . Nothing. I will continue to research and blog here until I am satisfied with an response from the ceo. If everyone who has the same problem complains and scream loud enough this issue would have been recalled. If you want to discuss further please contact me. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
2008 Toyota Sequoia, prior to nationwide recall I have complained to Toyota concerning unresponsiveness of the accelerator pedal, as well as other defects in vehicle and I continue to be ignored by both manufacturer and dealership, with dealership making excuses by saying things like different parts of the body where made in different factories causing there to be variants in the color of the vehicle bumper from the rest of the body, and that they are not that familiar with the new model Sequoia since they haven't had them in the shop yet (excuse made in 2009). I made a written request in November in regards to what I call unresponsiveness of the accelerator pedal, when I push the pedal some times the car will accelerate rapidly other times it would do nothing then jump and accelerate without me putting access pressure on the pedal. I also reported on defects in leather seats and body color which is two toned by defect to name a few of the issues. The manufacturer called me, referred me back to the dealership and again the dealership will not do anything about the issues as minimizes them. Here we are in 2010 my car still accelerates when it wants to instead of when I want it to, I still have a car with exterior and interior defects and poor workmanship. And was insulted when the only thing I have received from Toyota was a post card asking me to pay over $200 for a dvd to update my navigation center, which is adding salt to the wound that Toyota has dug if anything Toyota should be doing more then a temporary fix for customers and making us pay more money to fix their issues. The unpredictable acceleration is not from a sticky pedal I believe its electrical, possibly from other electrical devices, such as cell phone, garage door opener remote, gate remotes or door access remotes, all which I carry from time to time in my vehicle, however I cant put my life in danger testing out my theory. Something needs to be done soon, either replace the cars or pay up.

I have just had the transmission on my 2002 Sequoia fail. Cost was $3200 at aamco, plus $200 for a car rental. Every forum I go on I find at least 8-10 owners with this same problem, od planetary gear failure. So one has to wonder why Toyota has not had a recall. Aamco told me the new part was an improved version. This implies that Toyota is aware of the problem. I'm thinking of talking to a lawyer about looking into a class action lawsuit. I'm very disgusted.
Vsc skid control lights come on and now the skid control does not work. The truck has twice in the last 6 months failed to go into forward and reverse without turning the it off and letting it s it for 5 minutes. This could be a serious safety issue if it occurs as I was trying to merge into a high speed intersection.
My 2002 Toyota Sequoia died at a red light. It started fine but when put in gear the car dies. The dealer states to replace the transmission. My personal mechanic tells me to replace only a couple of sensors. Tried to contact Toyota corp. But just got the run-around.
Driving down the road starting hearing weird noise coming from engine are. I made it home and next day I was driving tried to acelerate and it wouldn't . Engine kept running but it would not move had truck towed home(62 miles) car is a 2001 with 118000 miles never would think this would happen to Toyota. . Pls help.
Owner of 2001 Toyota Sequoia who's transmiision has failed and requires new transmission. Many postings on interent with the same isssue of failure due to so called overdrive planetary gear defect. Should be a national recall.
"vsc/trac" warning lights come on and stay on, and car tries to go back/forward at the same time. I bought this car used with 66,000 miles on it, and problem is chronic. Dealer says they can't recreate the problem. I looked online and there are lots of problems with this in Toyota Sequoias. Date of most recent incident is recorded below.
When the vehicle has stopped, it can surge forward a bit. Feels like the vehicle behind me has rear ended me. The force of this seems to vary a bit.

In 8/06 I noticed a roaring/grinding noise coming from my end. L. Bearing replaced x2. Problem remained. Then replaced the right front bearing. Still to no avail. I then took my car to Toyota in tampa who stated the replaced bearing had been pressed in too tight. I took my car back to the mechanic who then took the entire assembly over Toyota in clearwater to replace the entire assembly. Still no resolution. Tire problem? so, I took it back to the tire kingdom who put on new michelin cross terrain SUV tires. Problem remained. So I took it back to them and they then put on a new set of michelin ltx tires. Problem remained. So, I then took it to collisiontec in clearwater, thinking that perhaps tire kingdom might have bent something when they originally rotated the tires. (the certified Toyota mechanic had previously inspected everything under my car when he first had it but had been unable to detect any damage). Collisiontec drove the car and did an initial inspection, but could not detect anything. They have asked to have me bring the car back so that they can keep it for a week and do a complete inspection. In the meantime, my check engine light came on and the vsc/vtc light came on, so I took it back to the Toyota mechanic. The O2 sensor needs to be fixed/replaced. To fix the vsc/vtc Toyota doesn't sell the one part needed, only the complete set for $900! this is all on top of the original roar/grinding/vibration problem which still exists!! reapairs now up to 2k & no resolution. Also, my car was recalled for the ball joint problem. There is no sticker indicating ball joints replaced. If the ball joints were not replaced as they should have been, could this be the source of the roar/grinding/vibration? this roar/grinding/vibration is coming from the front and occurs only when the car is in motion.
I put the vehicle in park, then got out and closed the door. The vehicle was fully stopped when I got out. It then started to move forward, the vehicle picked up speed and moved forward approximately 25 feet. I opened the door as it was moving and pushed on the emergency brake with my hand just as it crashed into the staircase in my garage. When I got back into the vehicle after the crash the car was in drive. Thus the car automatically shifted from park to drive. It is possible it shifted from neutral to drive but I don't think so. Either way this still poses great concern. This incident happened on September 19, 2005. My vehicle is a 2002 Toyota Sequoia.
When the vehicle is being driven the transmission hesitates, then jerks forward. This is a daily occurrence. *m.
I have a 2003 Toyota Sequoia and my vsc trac, vsc off lights stay on. I have been told it is the transmission however it is a defect from Toyota. The abs light and check engine light comes on as a result. I have seen lots of complaints on this issue as well and think that Toyota should do a recall to fix this problem.

While consumer was driving the check engine light/trac light, and abs braking light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. Then, vehicle stalled. Consumer was unable to restart vehicle, and had vehicle towed to dealer for inspection. Mechanic determined that the battery needed to be replaced. Consumer informed mechanic that this problem recurred and had not been resolved.
Put my Sequoia in park and shut off . I got out to go into gas station, as I shut the door to the vehicle, the car jerked and began making a grinding noise and proceeded to go in reverse back. I went to get into the vehicle to make sure I had gotten it into the park position and it was. I couldn't stop it and by that time it was too late for me to get away from the vehicle. It ended up pinning my legs between a concrete barrier that protects the gas pumps and the door of my vehicle. Eventually, it folded the drivers side door backwards making it parallel to the front bumper and released me to fall to the ground. It then continued in reverse until it finally hit a parked car and stopped. All of the witnesses, including the actual police officer noted in their statements that they found the car in park. At this point, Toyota is not taking responsibility for this and a neutral party who quickly checked the Sequoia said they found no problem with the car staying in park so there would probably be nothing further done.
While traveling any where I would lose power and my vsc trac warning lights and skid trac lights will come on and I will have to wait for the lights to go off in order to get my power back. And also I had to replace two of my door handles. And before my SUV was 3yrs I had to replace the transmission.
I have a 2001 Toyota sequioa that has a vibration that comes through the entire front dash especially during downhill braking. The TSB is supposedly for cars under factory warranty only. However, mine was out of warranty when they issued the TSB. I also have been experiencing the the vsc trac lights coming on for no reason at all. Also, the foglight in the front bumper has moisture inside of it that cannot be removed. The last thing is the feeling that someone has just bumped you from behind while sitting at a traffic light.
The vehicle was placed into park with the engine running, when all of a sudden it rolled backwards. The engine was left running in the park position when it rolled out of the driveway struck the consumer as he/she was trying to stop it and crashed into a tree.
The check engine, vsc, and traction lights on my 2001 Toyota Sequoia all came on simultaneously at 82,000 miles, I was told that I need to replace the transmission for $3800. 00 and the computer needs replacing for about $2000. 00. The brakes have been constant struggle requiring replacement every 8 months.
Vehicle occasionally lurches forward when in gear with the brake pedal depressed. Vehicle traction control engages and will not allow the acceleration in heavy traffic conditions.
A 2003 Toyota Sequoia 2wd/limited was placed in park with the engine running on a down slope driveway. The driver exited the vehicle, opened up the back to get something to deliver. The person began walking up the sidewalk to the front door when an eye witness noticed that the car was in foward motion and yelled a warning. The vehicle struck a closed garage door and knocked it out of place and stopped the vehicle. The driver ran to the car and the gear lever was in park. The engine was shut off and the vehicle was towed to the dealership.
I need to report my 2001 Toyota sequioa after an incident that nearly became a deadly accident that no one could have found out that it was because of a manufacturer's transmission default had I not survived that incident. On Dec. 24, 2002, I was driving my 2001 Toyota seqioua in fwy 5 when suddenly the engine stopped in the middle of the fwy 5. I was able to start the engine, but it died down after I changed the (automatic) gear to drive. I, together with two passengers: one adult and a 4-yr old toddler, was stuck in the vehicle waiting for the inevitable. To cut the story short,I got my car towed to the nearest Toyota dealership, frontier Toyota in valencia. After they checked the car on 12/26, the service rep informed me that the automatic transmission needs to be replaced. I bought my 2001 Toyota sequioa in Nov of 2000 when it first came out in the market. I've maintained my SUV with Toyota dealerships (mcpherson in tustin, and sunnyvale Toyota). I had it serviced for its 30,000 mile maintenance. On may 2002 which is just 7 months prior to the incident on Dec 24, 2002. I tried contacting Toyota's corporate office, but they don't want to cover the service under the 60,000 mile warranty because the mileage at the time of the incident is 3,000 over. It doesn't make any sense to me that an automatic vehicle I bought brand new, which I have maintained at their dealership all through out including the required 30,000 mile service, will just break down and needs its automatic transmission replaced at 63,000 mileage that nearly caused my life and two other passengers. I am concerned that I may have gotten the default vehicle from the first batch of this SUV that came out in the market in Nov of 2000. And I am concerned that a manufacturer's default can be overlooked and could have been the cause of my loss and others. I feel responsible to inform to prevent any possible loss/ES. I need to be heard because I nearly lost my life, including two more, right before christmas.
