36 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2012

Started vehicle and air bag warning light began flashing. Looked online and found hundreds of other 2006 Sienna owners have same problem.

37 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2012

Airbag warning light appeared on dashboard suddenly. Dealership ran diagnostics and said that a loose connection below the car seat could be the reason, as that fixed the warning light issue. Car's extended warranty expires in about 8months, and reading the most complaints on this Mini-van being airbag issue, I am worried that the actual error (requiring replacement of the whole system $2k-$3k+ that others are paying) would appear right after my warranty expires. Toyota should really consider this as a re-call, or, extend the warranty of the airbag systems to 10yrs (regardless of mileage) to provide the security to 2006 Sienna owners.

38 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2011

Purchased vehicle used in August 2011 with approximately 52,000 miles. Upon starting vehicle in late December 2011 (approximately 56,000), air bag warning light began to blink. The next day, the light did not blink and appeared unlit (normal). The third day, the light began to blink again and has not stopped. There was no unusual bumping or impact that could have caused the light to illuminate. I took the vehicle to the dealer for diagnosis. Dealer told me that the airbag wires had been "tampered with" - apparently by the previous owner (vehicle has prior salvage title, but has been repaired, inspected, and approved for service again). The deal quoted $2,500 - $3,000 to replace faulty wiring harness. I declined the service in the immediate, to consider the safety and cost repercussions. Although I declined service, the air bag light ceased blinking - even though the vehicle was not repaired. Additional research has revealed hundreds, if not thousands of 2006 Toyota Sienna owners who have had a nearly identical experience. There are tsbs related to this issue. A recall seems necessary for this important safety issue related to an apparent faulty air bag wiring system.

39 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2011

The air bag warning light illuminated, and continued to flash. I took the van to the local Toyota dealership the next business day, as a faulty safety system was concerning. The service department handed me a $3,000 estimate to replace a faulty wiring harness and air bag assembly, along with the news that the "platinum" extended warranty I purchased would not cover the repair. It seemed odd for a critical safety system to fail while the vehicle is relatively young, so I checked online. One site alone showed 85 owners of 2006 Siennas with this same problem. From a reliability perspective, a critical safety system should last longer than this. This is especially true when repair of the system is prohibitively expensive. The items affected were a floor wire harness and side air bag assembly, part numbers 82161-08330 and 73920-ae031.

40 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Sienna. The contact was driving 25 mph when the srs air bag warning light illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer for diagnostic testing which confirmed that the air bag system was faulty. The dealer suggested that the passenger side air bag be replaced as well as the harness. The contact called manufacturer and opened a case. The failure mileage was 43,000.

41 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that the air bag warning light illuminated at engine start up. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who confirmed that the air bag sensor needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 130,000 and the current mileage was 159,600.

42 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that the air bag warning light was illuminated. The contact took vehicle to the dealer where a diagnostic test was performed and the dealer stated that a rusted cable caused the air bag light to illuminate. The vehicle was repaired but the repair did not remedy the defect. The failure mileage was 65,000.

43 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2011

The airbag warning light lit and did not disappear for about 3 days. Two days later the light appeared again and stayed on. The vehicle was taken in to a Toyota dealer who said that the airbag sensor and airbag were faulty. The vehicle was just a month over 5 years and only had 45000 miles on it! from researching the internet this seems to be an issue for this make and model.

44 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2011

Airbag light warning light was flashing, started just after 60k mi. Went to dealer to have diagnosed. B0111, b0116 codes. Computer at dealer states that driver's side wiring squib is defective and needs to be replaced. Seems to be a known issue because repair instructions were available without taking apart my vehicle. Warranty on this part was extended to 60k, but dealer will not cover repair at 61k. Looking into it further, dealership chose not to cover because my vehicle had not been serviced at that dealership (35 miles from my home and over a mountain pass). Only owned vehicle for a year. Quoted price of $2600 to repair. In the meantime, entire airbag system on vehicle is disabled. Part is back-ordered, dealer did not have a sense of when it would be available.

45 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2011

I own a 2006 Toyota Sienna which started displaying an airbag warning light at about 90,000 miles. I had an independent airbag technician run diagnostics. He found a history of increased resistance in the connector under the drivers seat. He stated that he had seen this in the driver and front passenger connections of many 2006 Siennas. I found online that this is a widespread problem of a critical safety system for which Toyota is not taking responsibility. Owners are paying thousands of dollars for repairs only to have it fail again which suggests that Toyota has no idea as to the root of the problem. Hopefully, I have solved my problem by applying penetrox (an anti corrosive zinc paste for electrical connections) to the connectors under both front seats and connecting and disconnecting each about 25 times to clean the contacts. The fix has lasted 2 months so far.

46 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

Airbag lights starting flashing on an intermittent basis early in the life of the vehicle. I brought the vehicle in for service under warranty. Repairs were attempted, but the airbag light still would flash intermittently (but often for short periods, say one or two days). In July, 2011, the flashing of the airbag lights went from intermittent to permanent. Dealer quoted a repair estimate in excess of $4,000 and stated the vehicle was no longer in warranty. But the failure of the airbag component(s) has been intermittently evident (through the indicator light) from very early in the life of the vehicle. Warranty repair attempt was unsuccessful, and intermittent of warning light made it impossible to obtain effective service. Toyota refused the consumers request to repair the faulty air bag components (s) in the vehicle. Updated 09/20/11.

47 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2011

The 2006 Sienna has an airbag defect. The warning light comes on indicating that the airbag is faulty. Within 15 months the airbag assembly had to be replaced twice with the same part.

48 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2011

Air bag warning light flashes. Taken the car in twice already to fix it. Went on again last week. Now I am out of warranty. . . . Hope they will fix it again since it is an ongoing problem. It is scary to drive the car if you think the air bag may go off at any time ! Toyota needs to tell the dealership how to fix this problem! isn't replacing the "part" two times enough already?? my car has 80k miles on it.

49 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that when driving approximately 10-70 mph, the air bag warning light would illuminate intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic twice for the same failure. The dealer was notified and informed the front passenger side air bag was installed incorrectly during production. In addition, the technician informed the contact that air bag could inadvertently deploy or possibly not deploy during a crash. The dealer stated there was a shortage within the wiring system and the front passenger side air bag and wiring harness would need to be replaced. There was a technical service bulletin related to the defect under NHTSA item number: 10024292. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified regarding the problem and informed the contact that they would respond at a later date to whether they would be financially responsible for the repair. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000. The VIN was unavailable.

50 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2011

My wife started the car and the air bag light started flashing. So we looked up in the owner's manual and it said to bring the vehicle in ASAP because the air bags could deploy on their own. We took vehicle to miller Toyota in manassas, va and they repaired the vehicle by replacing 2 passenger side air bags and the harness at a cost of $2353. 70 to us. Srs warning light continued flashing after start up. Dealer confirmed error code b0111. Passengers air bag and harness needs replaced. These items are covered with "updated parts" in a Toyota TSB 0162-10, dated 02/27/2008, covering Sienna model years 2004 through 2008. Over one hundred similar occurrences are found on various safety related and owner based internet sites. This is an obvious oem defect of a critical vehicle system that Toyota has been aware of for some time now.

51 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2011

During normal usage, srs warning light on dash began flashing. Took to dealer and problem was diagnosed as b0111 - airbag wiring harness failure. Dealer has advised will order part to replace. Item is covered under 5 year / 60k warranty.

52 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that the air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was inspected and the contact was advised that the air bag harness needed replacing. The manufacturer did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was no longer under warranty. No repairs were performed. The current mileage was 75,100 and the approximate failure mileage was 68,000.

53 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2011

Tl- the contact owns a 2006 Toyota Sienna. The contact noticed that the air bag warning light suddenly illuminated intermittently. The dealer or manufacturer had not been notified nor was the vehicle diagnosed or repaired. The current and failure mileages were 94,000. Bw.

54 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2011

The air bag warning light is flashing. Per information online, this indicates a problem with the airbags -- either failing to inflate in a crash or inflating erroneously while driving. This seems like a very serious safety issue. Correction of the problem can cost up to $4,000 and should be considered a safety defect and subject to recall.

55 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2011

The airbag warning light on my Toyota Sienna illuminated when the car had about 60,000 miles on it, well before the expiration of Toyota's extended warranty. Two local dealerships told me that it was a wiring harness problem and would cost somewhere between $2000 and $3000 to fix, as it was not covered by the warranty. Fortunately, the light went off after a short time. Now with about 90,000 miles on the car, it has come back on. A quick internet search has revealed literally hundreds of complaints of this same failure, many of which are occurring with very few miles on the car. I cannot imagine why Toyota has not issued a safety recall. Beyond that, I cannot fathom why NHTSA hasn't yet demanded one. This is clearly a defective design and Toyota is not being held accountable for it. Please do something about this. Just do an internet search for 2006 Sienna airbag complaint. You will be shocked at the number and consistency of complaints about this problem.

56 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that the air bag warning light illuminated intermittently. The dealer advised the contact that the air bag and harness would need to be replaced. The contact did not inform the manufacturer nor was the vehicle repaired. The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that while parked, the air bag light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for a diagnostic test and the technician stated that the front driver’s side air bag would have to be replaced. The air bag was replaced. The air bag warning light continued to illuminate. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the technician stated that the passenger side air bag would have to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired a second time. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.

60 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the air bag warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the entire harness system needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 77,000. The VIN was unavailable.

61 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2010

I have had this problem on and off since I have owned my car. Periodically. . . And for no apparent reason. . . My airbag warning light will flash on and off. After a week or two. . . It will go out. Then after a month. . . On again. It's impossible to get to the dealer when it's acting up. I have read or numerous others having similar issues with their 2006 Siennas.

62 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2010

On oct 15, the airbag warning light began flashing in my 2006 Toyota Sienna. I took it into the dealer and was told my airbags are defective and the squib and harness would need to be replaced. They called Toyota to see if they would cover it since my warranty was 6000 miles over, and they said they wouldn't. Said it could cost around $3000 for me to replace. This needs to be included in a recall.

63 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

The driver's and passenger's front seat air bags both failed. There was no accident or impact. The only indication of a problem was the illuminated air bag indicator warning light in the instrument cluster. Both air bags required replacement at a cost to the owner of $1,273. Toyota denied any responsibility and required the owner to pay the entire $1,273 charge. After the owner contacted Toyota national customer relations, a $500 Toyota merchandise credit was offered, which the owner is unlikely to use due to the owner's reluctance to purchase any Toyota product in the future. Updated 01/23/10 updated 01/20/11.

64 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2010

I have a 2006 Toyota Sienna with 73,000 miles. The vehicle was purchased brand new from koons Toyota in westminster, MD. Air bag warning light has been checked and reset twice within the past two months because it keeps flashing. Toyota recommends that I replace both airbags and the wiring harness to ensure the problem does not persist. Total cost = $2,800. This is a major problem for me and my family and I don't feel safe driving this vehicle. Others seem to be having the same issue.

65 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2010

The contact owns 2006 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that the air bag warning light would illuminate sporadically. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that the complete seat harness for the front driver seat would need to be replaced in order to correct the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 68,000. The VIN was unavailable.

66 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2010

02-08-2010 under bad snowing weather condition I found that air bags warning light is flashing on dashboard in my Toyota Sienna ce 2006. 02-10-2010 I was in koons tysons Toyota service center 8610 leesburg pike, vienna, va 22182 I got diagnostics report: fault code# b0111 and I was "advised that right seat (side) airbag needs replacement $945. 50". But it seems to me that diagnostics wasn't done carefully. My vehicle was in outdoor condition under snowing storm. Service center hasn't checked engine, transmission, electric, lights (there are no records about engine, transmission, electric, lights. In the report). I know that left tail light doesn't work in my vehicle, but I dont see that this issue is mentioned in the diagnostics report. It looks like that service center has checked error code only. So I can't trust this diagnostics report.

67 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2009

Immediately after warranty work on driver side door, the airbag warning light came on (on the way home from dealer). Dealer claimed that there was no connection between their repair work and the airbag problem. They replaced the driver side airbag for total cost of $740. 00. The warning light went out and stayed out for a few months. When it came back on the dealer said the wiring harness also needed to be replaced at cost of at a cost of $2,250. Almost $3,000 for the all the repairs. The dealer cannot explain why the part would fail, or why they replaced the airbag since it did not solve the problem. Failure occurred within the 60 months of the warranty but over the 60,000 miles. Dealer refuses to pay for any of the repairs. This vehicle has not been in any accident.

68 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2009

Since December, 2009, my 2006 Toyota Sienna's airbag light keeps coming on, then going off, coming on, going off, etc. I took it to the dealership when it first happened and was told I needed a new driver's side airbag. I was told it would not be covered under warranty. Why would an airbag need replacing after only owning my van barely three years? I might add that while my van was still under warranty, they had to previously fix an airbag sensor. When I realized the light would go off and stay off (sometime for a week or more at a time), I called the dealership back (twice). The first time the lady said, "OH, it may come on again, but maybe you'll be lucky". What kind of answer is that? today, I again called the dealership, mentioning how many other people are having this exact same problem with their Toyota Siennas and the service guy claims to have not heard anything about it. The dealership claims I need to replace the entire airbag. If the entire airbag truly needed replacing, why would the warning light go off for a week or two at a time and come on and go off intermittently? and I also had a previous issue with the airbag while the van was still under warranty. I'm left wondering what the real problem is and the fact that I have now been on several different web sites where other people are complaining about the exact same thing makes me wonder if this should be a recall issue. This problem has been going on for 2-1/2 months.

69 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2009

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated the airbag warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where unknown repairs were made to the air bags. Upon starting the vehicle, the air bag light was still illuminated. The dealer made a second repair to the air bags. Since the repair, the air bag warning light illuminated on two separate occasions. Attempts to correct the failure were made a total of four times, all at the contacts expense. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance, claiming they had not received any similar complaints on her year, make and model. There were no recalls. The approximate failure mileage was 21,000 and the current mileage was 69,000.

70 Warning Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2009

Airbags intermittently and unpredictably become non-functional. That is, the warning light goes on and off at unpredictable intervals. I am told by the dealer service representatives that the airbags are non-functional (I. E. , system shut down) when the warning light is flashing. This is a severe safety concern to me for the sake of my family. It is galling since the airbag system was a major selling point of the car. Attempted repairs by dealer on August 4, 2009 under warranty replaced the airbag assembly on one side but did not fix the problem of repeated intermittent failure. After the vehicle was out of warranty, Toyota refused to address their failed attempts at repair, and I was quoted well over $2,000 to fix the problem as per Toyota service bulletin t-sb-1062-10 on July 20, 2011. This proposed repair apparently included replacing the previously replaced airbag as well as the assembly on the other side. I delayed the repair at risk to family on account of the extreme cost. Also, I appealed to Toyota corporate representatives since the problem had been a persistent and unremedied one since during the warranty period. Recently, the Toyota dealer informed me that a new Toyota service bulletin isolates the defect somewhat from previous Toyota t-sb-1062-10 and reduces the cost of the repair to somewhere near $400 (although I paid $47. 50 to learn that). But after that recent service by Toyota on June 20, 2013, the warning light is off again, and the airbags are presumably functioning again for a while. This intermittency has been the problem with getting this defective airbag system fixed under warranty as it should be. Also, the intermittent and repeated failure of the units suggests a faulty design and a safety defect that should be addressed in all of the vehicles. I have seen similar airbag concerns of other 2006 Sienna owners on various online bulletin boards.
