4 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2020

My 2006 Toyota Tacoma was recalled due to Toyota's frame rust and corrosion issue. After notification, July 2015, I brought my car to Toyota of wallingford (dealer) as instructed in the recall notice for a frame inspection. The dealer inspected the truck frame and said it was not eligible for a new frame as the frame passed their inspection. I disputed this because I was able to push my finger through parts of the frame. They insisted that the integrity was sound. Their recommendation was to spray the car with a corrosion resistant covering (crc). After some debate I took their recommendation and authorized the work. The crc was a thick black gel that covered the frame, so rust, rot and deterioration was completely hidden. In retrospect, I believe they intentionally covered the rust so issues could not be detected and re-inspection did not occur. Recently I had to replace the tires on the truck. When the tire dealer put the truck on the lift he noticed the frame was bowing and large pieces of the frame were missing. The crc was still covering the rust but large holes in the frame were detected. The tire specialist would not work on the truck due to the unstable frame, so I quickly called the Toyota dealer to re-inspect the frame. They concluded that the frame was rotted and need to be replaced, but informed me that the deadline under the recall had just passed on 1/31/19. They would not cover any repairs although I followed every step and endured every inconvenience for a rot issue that they were always responsible for. Unsatisfied with the dealer's response, I contacted Toyota directly and they reaffirmed that they would not cover the frame. Toyota did not resolve all issues related to their faulty frames. They brilliantly came up with a solution that hid the rust and rot and saved the company millions by masking the issue and not replacing the bad frames.

5 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2020

Toyota was forced to give a warranty enhancement for frames on a number of trucks because of rust. The warranty has expired but I sill have the old rust prone frame. This should have been a recall that does not expire, what happens to me down the road when my frame fails? since the problem will not go away how is the warranty limited? this is not right, how can I resell a truck that has a faulty frame? I am upset they got away with out a recall.

7 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2019

When Toyota recalled takoma trucks for frame rust I took it to the dealer and was told it didn't have enough rust to qualify. Now when I had it checked ou the mechanic said it isn't safe to drive any more. When I complained to toyta customer service they said the time for replacing the frames was over. The truck is still dangerous to drive and I feel the frame should be replaced.

8 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2019

Frame rust. Truck was treated during the recall in Dec 2014 and dealer stated it would be fine. 5 years and 19,000 miles later, the frame is totally rusted through. Contacted Toyota and they said there's nothing they can do because the warranty expired. Vehicle was treated and if treated correctly it should have lasted longer than 5 years.

9 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2019

There was a recall for frame rust on Tacoma trucks between 2005-2010. My truck was affected with this recall and I took it to a Toyota dealer in Dec 2014 for evaluation. The dealer said the frame was fine but they applied a corrosion protection spray and said that would protect the frame. In August 2019, we notice a good bit of rust on the frame and took it to a different Toyota dealer and they said there's a lot of rust and the frame is rusted through. In 2014 when treated as a solution to the recall, the truck had 56,853 miles on it. In August 2019 when we took it in for evaluation, the truck had 75,239 miles on it. Since 2014, we only put 19,092 miles on the truck. Attached is some photo's of the frame and 1 of the truck to show the condition of the vehicle. My complaint is we did what we were supposed to do when the recall was active and we were told the corrosion protection spray would protect the frame but now I have a safety issue because the frame is rusted through and per the dealer there's nothing they can do because there's no open program. If protected, why did the frame rust through with very little miles on it. I'm going use the date as August 7, 2019 since that's when the dealer said the frame was rusted through.

10 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2019

Tl the contact owned a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that the entire subframe was severely rusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 262,000.

11 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2018

97,224 miles. The frame is rusted and broken at the left front near the cab mount under the door. My truck was made in canada, but I purchased it used in minneasota, so it's registered in us. Canada's frame warranty class action lawsuit requires my truck to be registered in canada to qualify for a new frame and Toyota us requires my truck to be made in the us to qualify for the massive frame recall here. What can I do to make my otherwise very nice truck safe to drive again? the crack was discovered during an oil change and I have only driven it 1/2 a mile since. Thank you.

12 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2017

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 14v604000 (suspension); however, the contact stated that the frame was rusted. 14 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2017

Went to get my car inspected and it failed for a rusted frame. Did some research and found out it's under recall.

15 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2017

The vehicle frame is so rusty everywhere including visible cracks that I do not know if it is safe to drive anymore. I am sure it will not be safe to tow anything for sure or the thing will break in half.

16 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2016

I took my Toyota Tacoma 2006 in for service at pauly Toyota 1035 s. Route 31, crystal lake, IL 60014 last night and they found several cracks in the frame, the area were the springs are mounting to, is really rusted and in really bad condition. The cracks don¿t seem to be new, and there is even paint in between the crack so they knew the crack was there in February 2015 when I took my truck to be painted, this was part of the frame rust recall by Toyota. The frame was not wire brush at least to get some of the rust off for the paint to attach to it, within 2 months big pieces of metal and paint were falling from the frame. On September of 2015 I took my truck to pauly Toyota to be inspected for hole or problems in the frame, because of the big pieces of metal falling from the frame and they said everything was ok. Now a year later the frame has several cracks.

17 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2016

I purchased a used 2006 Toyota Tacoma several years ago. My mechanic recently noticed severe rust damage to my frame when performing an oil change. They mentioned to me about a campaign that Toyota was doing where they were replacing frames or coating them. When I inquired about this I learned that the campaign had expired on 3/31/16. I spoke with an executive with Toyota several times only to be told that they would not do anything further since it is after the expiration date. They said they mailed out 3 notices in regards to the campaign in which I did not receive a one. I obviously would have taken care of such a safety issue had I known. I am very surprised that Toyota would not extend this campaign or that it would not be deemed as a full blown recall with no expiration! how can such a serious safety issue have an expiration date! I now have a vehicle that I am nervous to be driving let alone have a member of my family drive. This is very upsetting especially since I never received a notice.

18 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2016

I too am a victim of the defective Toyota Tacoma frame. The frame of my vehicle rusted through to the point of breaking, rendering my vehicle completely unsafe to drive. The vehicle only has 78,000 miles, and is now utterly worthless. I was driving the vehicle at highway speeds when I felt the frame give way, immediately changing the entire dynamic of performance. I was able to get the vehicle to my home when I discovered the frame had rusted through completely, dropping the vehicle between the cab and the bed. Only luck and my own driving experience kept me from crashing when the defective frame failed. I contacted Toyota, thinking that this issue would be handled because of the obvious manufacturer defect in the frame of the vehicle. I was wrong about this, and was met with complete disregard and a smug assurance that Toyota would never make any amends for this defective product. I was told that a notice was mailed to the previous owner of the vehicle, and that this met their obligation and that nothing further would be done concerning the matter. To say that the american consumer has been taken advantage of in this situation is a gross understatement. From the number of complaints concerning this exact situation, it is clear that there is a systemic defect in the frame used by Toyota in these vehicles. The manufacturer knows this, but instead of making efforts to correct the problem, they are expending their resources to defend not addressing the issue. Just because the company set an arbitrary date when they would no longer address the issue does not make the issue go away. They knowingly installed defective components in these vehicles and are now engaged in a deceptive and manipulative campaign to shirk their responsibility to the american consumer. I implore the nhsta to be the voice of the individual in this matter, as alone, we have no recourse.

19 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2016

This is what I wrote to Toyota "hello there, I already called Toyota customer care number and even got a case number for my problem and the answer I got was we can not help you with your problem because there is no warranty after the recall period is over. I will start from the beginning. My truck is 2006 Toyota Tacoma . I got a letter in mail about the recall for the frame and it stated that if my truck has excessive rust or a hole in it they will replace the frame, if not they will coat the frame to slow down the rust on the frame. I took to my dealer, they inspected it and found no holes in my frame. They will apply the coating and sent me on my marry way. This was back in 1/20/2015. Now fast forward to 9/6/2016 and now I have a big hole in my frame and a lot more rust then before. I don't take to beach. I take very good care of the truck but it's that defective frame that is on the truck. I know 95-00 Tacoma's did a buy back program a few years ago. The 2001-2004 if the frame got coated you gave the a 15 year warranty on the frame. 2005-2008 Tacoma's in canada got the same 15 year warranty if the frame got coated. So why not 2005-2008 Tacoma"s in the USA don't have that warranty? my point is you kinda need to work with me and others with this problem. This will be an safety issue at some point. The safety of myself, my family and other drivers. Please help me out now before it's too late. ".

20 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2016

During a recent safety inspection, the inspector noted that the frame was rusted and in one spot was rusted through. Contacted the manufacturer and was told that a recall had been initiated but had expired in March of 2016. Additionally, the manufacturer stated that the recall was not safety related. I have never been notified of this recall. Driving the vehicle with a frame that may fail is not safe. I believe that Toyota should be required to issue a safety recall and that they should be required to repair this unsafe condition caused by lack of a viable quality control program.

21 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2016

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. While the vehicle was stationary, the contact noticed that the frame was rusted severely. The vehicle was taken to be repaired per a recall in which the frame was spraycoated, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,000. The VIN and NHTSA campaign number were unavailable.

22 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 08/31/2016

01/22/15 Toyota dealer applied corrosion-resistant compound (crc), to frame of 2006 Tacoma (mileage 113835), a recall service. March 2016, I discovered crc peeling/flaking off many places on the frame. It appeared crc had been applied over rust. 4/12/16 we asked dealer to inspect crc during upcoming recall service for leaf spring assemblies. These were replaced 06/23/16 (mileage 138878). Invoice reads, ¿please note: crc on frame is peeling off¿. Dealer advised calling Toyota customer experience center. 06/24/16 Toyota created case complaint #1606240431. They notified us 6/27/16 that the crc campaign had ended and there was no remedy. 08/01/16, proprietor of a local garage, in business since 1955, evaluated. He was aware of the recall, had worked on other recalled trucks and said this was the worst he had seen. He thought crc had been applied to cover up rust. He recommended sand blasting and re-applying rust protectant soon before rust causes a serious safety issue. 08/11/16, owner of a body shop evaluated and said it would be difficult if not impossible to remove the rust. He was surprised the dealer had not replaced the frame, since he was aware of many frames being replaced by another dealer 40 miles away. Both professionals noted bubbling &/or buckling frame metal due to rust and said this will eventually become a very serious safety issue. 8/31/16, I contacted Toyota customer experience center to share professional opinions. The supervisor said Toyota would do nothing and would assume no liability for property damage, injury or death if the rusted frame breaks and causes an accident. I said this was unacceptable and repeatedly asked to speak with her manager. She said she did not have a manager and she terminated my call. Toyota¿s failed remedy leaves us with the initial recall problem and safety concern.

23 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2016

Frame corrosion. The frame on my 2006 Toyota Tacoma truck is very rusty. The metal is just flaking off. I took it to the car wash and while washing underneath parts of the metal just flaked off in large pieces. I called the dealer and was told they couldn't help me and gave me a customer service number for Toyota corporation. I called that number and was told a limited service campaign for corrosion problems on my truck ended on March 31, 2016. They could not assist me with my problem because it wasn't a safety recall. What will it take for this problem to become a safety issue. The frames on these trucks are defective. They are fracturing and rendering these trucks useless. Many of us cannot afford to replace the frames and if we sell this problem is so well known we can't get a fair price for vehicles. My truck has 100600 miles on it. I've taken care of the truck but it doesn't matter. The frame rusted anyway. Please help those of us that have these vehicles. Toyota should recognize that this is a safety issue just like it was before. The only difference is that Toyota learned how to avoid responsibility for these defective frames.

24 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2016

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. A year after the vehicle was repaired per an unknown recall, the subframe was rusted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the cause of the failure was undetermined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 41,000.

25 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 06/29/2016

2006 Tacoma has major frame rust. Toyota approved rustproofing was applied in may 2015 by the original Toyota dealer. One year later, the rustproofing is falling off in sheets, showing the separating layers of frame steel. I contacted Toyota (case 1060290111) and was told there was nothing Toyota would do. I had wanted the frame and rustproofing to be inspected by Toyota. They would do neither. They called the dealer that applied the coating and suggested I take it to them, for inspection, but they are 300 mile away. I asked if a local dealer could perform the task, but was told Toyota would not authorize that. The truck has 165000 miles and is otherwise in very good condition. My fear is that the frame will fail while driving on the road.

26 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 06/09/2016

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. While the vehicle was undergoing maintenance, the contact was informed that there was severe rust to the subframe of the vehicle. The manufacturer was informed of the severe corrosion; however, the contact was informed that the warranty period had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 163,086.

28 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2016

I was unaware of any issue with rust problems in the frame when I bought the truck used in March 2014, nor did I ever receive any letters from Toyota regarding problems with rusting frames. During a regular maintenance tune-up at a Toyota dealer 05/13/2016 (160,000 miles), they reported to me 2 holes in the frame resulting from rust and that the vehicle will not pass inspection. They also reported that the manufacture had extended some kind of ¿recall¿ to deal with the problem had expired March 31, 2016 and there was nothing the dealership could do. The dealer gave me a referral to a specialist that specialize in repairing rusted frames. Went to another mechanic to see if it was worth the expense to invest in the truck, they then brought it to the local Toyota dealership, which reported that the truck had the Toyota¿s attempt fix undercoating done and that nothing else would be done by the manufacture. Called the Toyota corporation customer service and reported the problem. They called back to say nothing would be done.

29 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2016

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for a recall regarding the leaf springs on both sides of the vehicle. The mechanic noticed two holes on the frame and severe rust. The contact was informed that the recall was expired and the vehicle would not be repaired under the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 198,158.

30 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2016

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer to be repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 14v605000 (suspension). The technician stated that the recall repair could not be completed due to severe frame rust. The dealer diagnosed that the frame needed replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and informed the contact that the manufacturer's frame rust campaign had expired. The contacted mentioned that the manufacturer informed him that an additional campaign or recall would be issued in the future. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.

31 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2016

I took my truck to malloy Toyota for frame inspection regarding the limited service campaign eod- frame rust recall. Dealer informed me there was rust, but no perforations. They recommended coating the frame with compounds. I feel that my truck may not have perforations, but it is just a matter of time before the frame becomes perforated, resulting in a dangerous / unsafe vehicle. Putting the compunds on the frame is a quick band-aid and does not fix the problem. This frame will become unsafe, it is just a matter of time. This will not only potentially jeopardize the safety of my family / occupants in the vehicle, but also the others that share the road with my truck.

32 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2016

Frame rust - 2006 Toyota Tacoma - 21k miles - significant rust of frame. Spray-on rust inhibitor fix completed approx. Two years ago but rust remains and is increasing.
