I've noticed my steering became very hard and stiff all of a sudden. I've checked the power steering pump and fluid, it all checked out fine. I did a little research and noticed people having issues with steering intermediate shaft no 2. (lower one by the wheels). I noticed that part was not protected by anything and is and was exposed to the elements like salt, water, dirt etc. Overtime, the u-joint rusts up and starts to stick causing very dangerous conditions for the driver where it becomes very hard to turn the steering wheel when turning. I've attached a photo of my part in question. My Toyota dealership wants $700. 00 for parts and labor. That is outrageous.

Recalled fuel pump with no remedy- constant vibration from 20-40mph - automatically braking from shadows- automatically redlines when cold driving - various trim melting from the sun - power steering fluid disappearing told them at every service since new - again on March 25 was told truck was good - then on March 26 they tell me they are replacing an entire steering rack. Rear brake drums are loud and clumsy feeling - rear end whine - mpg 17 at the best- stalls shifting from d > r < d. This truck is a death trap. It is sitting at the dealership waiting for a fuel pump recall remedy. The auto braking and automatic acceleration has almost killed me and most likely would have a less experienced driver. Toyota of nashia nh have given me no updates. They have locked me into this lease without paying thousands to get out of it. The date of occurrence I put is a random date as all of these issues have been happening since ieased the vehicle brand new. Toyota of nashua of course can never replicate any problems. I need help ASAP getting away from this truck and I cannot get any help. I am 100 percent disabled veteran and needed a reliable vehicle not a death trap. Help me please.

The steering would become stiff and then loose causing loss of control at both low and high speeds. When trying to park the truck felt like there was no power steering. When making turns the steering would be hard then all of a sudden soft causing loss of control. When Toyota was contacted I was told there were no recalls or service bulletins. The local mechanic said to have the power steering fluid fllushed did that no change, then was told to have the power steering pump changed as well as the rack. Had the power steering pump replaced, no change. In researching the problem on the internet I found multiple reports that were similar to mine, some spoke about the u joint failing and in some cases there were reports of accidents or complete loss of steering. Had the u joint replaced and all issues were resolved. Toyota says there are no issues with the u joints.

I have a problem with the steering becoming stiff at times when turning the wheels either right or left. I took it in and I was told that they lubricated the universal joint; however, that did not rectify the problem. I've had the power steering pump replaced; but, this problem isn't the same as what was happening the the pump needed replacement.
Super stiff steering issue after replacing power steering pump and serpentine belt. Was searching and found out about intermediate u joint in the steering shaft. Took to midas were they applied pb blaster to u joint that was ceased. Seems to effect many cars and needs to be checked by dealerships as part of routine maintenance. Mine needs replaced and I have been to multiple Toyota dealerships in part few months and should have been caught.
I noticed the steering became intermittently stiff, becoming more so about a week ago. It happened while driving in all conditions (slow speed, highway speed, dry weather, wet roads etc) power steering fluid was full, pump was fine. My garage determined that the u joint on the steering shaft was stuck and that I need to replace the steering shaft. This is a 2 part shaft (with u joint) that is only available from Toyota. It's costing me $762 to have this replaced. This is a major safety issue. In the past Toyota has recalled the camry, corolla and rav4 for the same issue. I follow many Toyota forums and this appears to be a common issue in the Tacoma (2005-2014 models from what I've read). Why hasn't Toyota recalled the Tacoma as well?.

Powersteering not working properly when making a turn in either direction had to physically turn steering wheel would not recover on its own. Brought truck to Toyota dealer for problem they replaced the drive belt, thinking it was slipping on the powersteering pump. That did not fix the problem, took it back, the dealer decided the powersteering rack was the problem and cost for the rack was about $1400. 00. I decided to check internet to see if this problem was common. I found it was ,the universal joint on the steering shaft at the block is not protected from weather and is prone to rust it is a sealed joint and cannot be lubed. I sprayed the universal joint with rust blaster which loosen the joint up, I then sprayed a water proof silicone spray on it. Works like new. This is not only a safety problem but a finical problem and is an easy fix for Toyota.
Power steering pump seal failed at 57000 miles. Failure noticed by (low fluid) pump noise on 09/19/06. Pump replaced by dealer on 09/23/06 under extended warranty. Dealer stated that they had seen several power steering pump failures with less mileage.
