When driving over 50 mph on highway and brakes are applied the steering wheel shakes violently. This has happened since the vehicle was new. Dealer said it was the tires. He replaced them and the shaking stopped for almost a year. Tires were replaced again and shaking stopped for almost a year then resumed. No shaking occurs at speeds under 40 mph when brakes were applied. Most of my driving occurs below 40 moh.

Vehicle problem since new, steering wheel shake at speeds between 45-75mph. Took to dealer stated that they new of the problem and there was nothing they can do. Tech drove the vehicle and stated that he felt nothing when the shimmy was quit obvious (I was sitting next to him). Have taken to other local shops and they are unable to remedy the shake. Shake causes passenger seat to shake as well truck bed to hop. Toyota of America is well aware of this problem and has shown no effort to remedy the problem. Many cases documented on Toyota forums and blogs. Toyota has had to deal with arbitration from many consumers and all cases have been turned down. A major investigation on this problem needs to be done. Owners of the Tacoma, 4runner and tundra have had the issue.

I own 2012 Tacoma sport from 500miles on it's had a vibration/shake in the steering wheel and sometimes throughout the vehicle cab. Toyota has been unable to resolve this issue with me a even after spending money of my own on re-balancing and alignment and trying to video tape they just have excuses after excuses. They say it's normal called road feedback or they claim they cant see the shake in the videos I have sent them. I hope this complaint is taking seriously before someone does get hurt or killed, its sad to think that it would come to that before Toyota does something and owns up to this issue existing. I do believe this is a safety issue, when people spend there hard earned money on a vehicle they shouldn't have to have there steering wheel shake and vibrations with there new purchase. Thank you for taking the time to read my complaint, jon.
Steering wheel shakes at highway speed, Toyota escondido has been able to duplicate's problem. Wheels have been rotated and balanced and problem still persist, vehicle is now at 9100 miles and I plan having dealer look at issue again , but I'm concerned this could lead to a more serious issue that could affect the safety of the vehicle. I have researched forums and found numerous complaints regarding this issue that seems to plague the Tacoma line.
My 2004 Tacoma has very low mileage (around 64,000 miles). The steering wheel feels very loose and has alot of abnormal play. Driving down the road, the steering wheel shakes, vibrates, and rattles around all the time and becomes really bad on rough roads. When there is a slight bump in the road, turning a corner, being blown around in a little wind, or trying to avoid other cars, the trucks steering is so loose that I consider it a major safety hazard. I've done my research online and have found no recalls or TSB's for this problem from Toyota, but I have found multiple solutions to the problem which all relate to a poorly designed steering shaft on the column which wears out and results in loose steering. We shouldn't have to resort to the only known fix of welding the two parts of the shaft together. Someone should really be concerned about this as it's a major safety hazard.
