1998 Toyota Tacoma engine starter motor began to operate intermittently. After 1-month in this condition, starter motor failed to start engine. Dealer says that the contacts on the starter motor wear resulting in the intermittent operation. The only options are to replace the starter motor or overhaul the starter motor. I would not expect for the starter motor to fail only after 8 years.

The ignition remained running after the key was removed from the ignition. The dealer was notified. The starter engaged when the key was turned on, but after the engine started, the starter continued to crank until the battery was disconnected. This created a very dangerous condition. On another occasion the vehicle was started and the starter stayed locked in and cranked the engine. The vehicle was turned off, but the starter continued to run.
