1 Tailgate problem of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 02/16/2017

I went to my mechanic for a small repair recently and he informed me (and showed me) extensive rust on the frame and a major split in the frame from the extensive rust. He has told me that perforations are imminent in the frame and that the frame will need to be replaced. He also found rust damage to my brakes, rotors, paint (chipping with rust), wheel caps, and tailgate. He informed me that I cannot safely drive this truck on dirt roads or haul anything. 75% of the roads where I reside are dirt roads. Cost of frame replacement would exceed what I paid for the truck; I have owned this truck for 6 months. I have contacted Toyota and a local Toyota dealership for assistance, but have yet to hear back from either. I understand there was a class action lawsuit that was settled in 2016 for this very issue. Toyota needs to replace the frame of my truck and repair or replace all of the affected parts of the truck due to the extensive rust damage. I use my truck to travel long distances in order to take care of my mom who lives 600+ miles from me; my mechanic has informed me that it is not safe to drive this truck for long distances. This has a substantial impact on my daily life and my ability to take care of my mom. I do not believe I should have to bare the responsibility or liability of the damage caused by deficient parts used in the manufacturing process. Toyota should be made liable for these damages. Please advise. I will be contacting my lawyer.

2 Tailgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 12/02/2013

The tailgate of the vehicle lacks the required amount of structural integrity to serve its intended purpose. Since the tailgate is designed to be opened to a flat position for loading or unloading item(s) placed in the bed of the truck it will certainly require a certain amount of strength for this purpose. I noticed that my tail gate was no longer straight across when in the close position but had a concave appearance. I worried that the tail gate may come unlatched while in the up position or worse by collapsing by folding in the middle if using it to carry a partial load. I load my 4-wheeler in the back of the truck at times and due to the short bed have to leave the rear tires resting on the tail gate. The weight, although not excessive, seemed to possibly be the cause of the distress on the tailgate. I removed the interior cover as well as the top tailgate cover for inspection. My inspection did reveal two creases in the tailgate top section (when in the close position) about 18" from the right top and the same distance from the left top side. I called Toyota to see if any possible recall was in place to address this situation and they said there was no such recall. I asked if they recommended any remedy for the condition that I described and they suggested a company that does aftermarket truck modifications. If this tailgate isn't designed to carry a load than a permanent warning sign should be clearly viewed from the tailgate position at or near the handle or the flat surface when the tailgate is lowered. Since it is apparent that at times a load will travel across the tail gate moving into the bed cavity or be required to rest on the tailgate, it should meet all load requirement that could be reasonably anticipated.

3 Tailgate problem of the 2008 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 07/02/2013

My 2008 Toyota Tacoma has a factory bed extender. Which allows use to use the tailgate as part of the truck bed. Due to the small 5 ft bed. Load the weight of a rototiller into the truck cased the tailgate to bow and become unstable. They do not have any weight limit or restriction posted. If they sell parts to use the tailgate to support items it should not fail under such light loads. 2008 Toyota Tacoma tailgate is dangerously weak, and is unable to support what most consider normal weight for a truck tailgate. Although substandard design may be considered "buyer beware", truck buyers expect a tailgate to support the weight of normal truck use activities. Toyota provides no warning or caution anywhere that the tailgate is of insufficient strength to perform normal 1/2-ton truck duties, and typically (per internet forum threads) tells their customers that it is their problem and that they should not expect to be able to safely use the tailgate for anything more than hiding the inside of the bed. Since Toyota has produced a substandard designed part, they should have provided a visual warning on the part to alert customers to the danger their product imposes if used in a traditional manner. Since they did not do so, they should be held liable to provide a redesigned part to their customers or full restitution for the purchase price of the vehicles. A google or similar internet search on "tacoma tailgate forum" will substantiate my statements beyond my personal experience with the tailgate bending.

6 Tailgate problem of the 2008 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 10/15/2009

Fuel filler neck flap broke off and fell into the tank. Gas mileage is terrible. Left turn signal stayed on and air conditioner was working intermittently. Took vehicle to champion Toyota on 10-15-09. Dealership stated that flap inside tank is normal. . . They repaired turn signal and stated that this could have caused the a/c to not work properly. Dealership stated that wires were burnt together causing the turn signal to stay on. Received vehicle back on 10-20-09. Also, I had taken the vehicle to dealership a few months prior to the 10-15-09 incident concerning a/c not working, they said they corrected problem. Also, tailgate has bowed after moving a light dryer. Dealer states that tailgate is not rated.

8 Tailgate problem of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 03/27/2009

The frame of the truck is very rusted and pitting and I feel that this will cause frame failure and I also am on a second tailgate first one bent in half .

9 Tailgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 05/12/2008

When loading heavy (but within the rated capacity of the truck) equipment into this truck, the tailgate collapses under the load, causing the equipment to become off-balance and fall over, sometimes onto the person or persons loading said equipment.

10 Tailgate problem of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 05/01/2008

Vehicle 2006 Toyota Tacoma with towing package factory installed. While loading a 450 lb motorcycle into the bed of a 2006 Toyota Tacoma, using a motorcycle ramp, the tailgate completely collapsed by bending into a u shape in the middle causing the motorcycle to come falling down and injury two persons that were loading the motorcycle. All weight limits were checked in the owner manual before loading and the same motorcycle had been loaded into 3 other trucks of same size before with no incidents. I believe that the tailgate of this particular vehicle is unsafe and someone could be seriously injured or death could have occurred in this situation.

13 Tailgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 12/02/2006

I was loading a motorcycle into the back of my 2005 Toyota Tacoma and the tailgate collapsed. I have owned this truck for a year and a half and this is the first time I've ever put any weight on the tailgate of the truck. After doing some research on the internet, it sounds like thousands of people are experiencing the same thing. There is no mention from Toyota in the owners manual or any associated documents that the tailgate is incapable of handling a load. The weight rating for the cargo box is listed at 1000 pounds but there is nothing on the tailgate. I have owned a Ford ranger and a chevy s-10 in the past and never had any problem loading a bike in the bed. I have pictures of the collapsed tailgate available. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in this but it could have been potentially fatal in the bike had fallen on one of the men loading the bike. Toyota won't address this problem and is blaming this on the consumers.

14 Tailgate problem of the 2005 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 06/23/2006

We purchased 2 new Toyota Tacoma pick-ups for our motorcycle dealership. We have been in business for 8 years, and owned Ford, chevy, and Nissan as our delivery trucks. The tailgates on these trucks have never bent until we bought these 2 Toyotas. Both new trucks have bent tail gates, due to poor construction. There are no warning signs on the tailgate nor in the owners manual, but southeast Toyota refuses to warranty these items.

Consumer was unloading a motorcycle from his truck and the rear tailgate bent in almost a v. This shifted the motorcycle's weight, and almost resulted in an accident. The motorcycle could have fallen off the tailgate or fallen upon the caller . The owner's manual does not state how much weight the tailgate can support or any precautions on loading onto a tailgate.
