2 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2004

Front brake rotors are severely warped after just moderate use. This causes the vehicle to vibrate violently when stopping. When slowing from high speeds, this leads to loss of control of vehicle. New calipers, brake pads, rotors, and probably bearigs will be required to repair.

3 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2003

At just over two years ownership of my 2000 Tundra (in oct 2002), I began to notice a vibration when I applied the brakes. Not recognizing the problem as a warranty issue, I took my truck to a local repair shop. They indicated that the front discs were probably warped and that turning them would do the trick. After the front brake job, the problem remained. I then tried new tires and a wheel alignment with no improvement. It was after all of this that I learned that this is a Tundra-wide problem. When I inquired with Toyota to have the repairs covered under my warranty, they indicated that they would not help in the cost of my repairs because I was over the 36,000 miles of my warranty. With four technical service bulletins issued on this matter prior to oct 2002 (and one just after), Toyota knew they had a Tundra brake problem. Considering the seriousness of a flawed braking system, I believe, Toyota had a moral obligation to immediately notify all Tundra owners of their defective brakes. If Toyota had done so in a responsible and timely manner, this matter would have been resolved prior to the expiration of the 36,000 mile portion of my warranty. It was only through their gross negligence that it was not. From what I understand, the entire braking system, both front and rear, was not engineered properly. I further understand that repairs are to be accomplished with replacement parts that are not the vehicles original parts. This clearly indicates that my brake problem is not due to normal wear and tear but is due directly to a defectively designed brake system. I request that this matter be fully investigated and if its determined that Toyota marketed a defective vehicle, they should be held fully and solely responsible for all necessary repairs, regardless of warranty expiration.

4 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2003

When applying brakes front end shakes. Dealer notified.

5 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 09/24/2002

Major brake pulsation, especially when slowing down at freeway speeds to exit. Dealer has replaced the front pads, front rotors, rear shoes, rear drums, rear star wheel automatic adjusters. This is the third time since the truck was new that the brakes have started pulsating so bad that I'm becoming afraid to drive the truck at freeway speeds. Toyota's TSB to fix the problems doesn't last any longer than 5,000 miles. Ts.

6 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2002

Brakes vibrate and truck shakes bad, dealer says they will charge me to turn rotors and put in new pads. After going to your web site I see that there are alot of complaints on the same vehicle about the exact same problem. This is not safe and I would like an update on the fix for the problem please. How can these dealers charge people to fix a problem that is not there fault?.

My Toyota Tundra had warranty work performed on the front disc brakes and rear drum brakes @ 27,000 miles. Now at 40,000 the vibration problem has come back, same as before. My truck is now out of warranty and Toyota claims I have to pay for my next visit to the dealer. . . . Read more...

11 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2001

Toyota is aware they have a major design problem, but they resist a permanent fix. No safety defect listed.

12 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2001

I have taken my vehicle in on (3) separate occasions for the problems with the brake system. They refuse to fix it. There have been (2) bulletins both sent to you and the dealerships regarding the brake systems. I have read on the internet about several people having the same problem. If this is not fixed it can be a safety related issue. I feel this is a defective system and Toyota should have to replace it at no charge to the owner.

13 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2001

Front brake rotor warpage. Maybe due to the rear brakes not helping to stop vehicle. Maybe the size of the brake pads are to small to effectively dissipate the heat.

14 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2001

Moderate to heavy vibration when braking at freeway speeds. Low vibration when braking at lower speeds, 40 or less. Toyota has replaced the brakes twice and will do it again on Monday 9/10/01. This is no gurantee that the problem will be fixed. Several other 2000 and 2001 tunrda suffer from the same defect. Toyota repeats that this is a anoyance and not a safety issue. All tunrda owners regard it as a safety issue, due to the fact this defect has to do with the brake system. The actual cause of the vibration is warping of the rotors when they heat. Some Tundras have had problems with the rear brakes, but its limited.

15 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 06/29/2001

Brakes vibrate/pulse and steering wheel "shimmies violently when brakes are applied at speeds above 40 mph. Veh can be difficult to control. This is a common problem that Toyota is aware of yet they replace defective parts with defective parts rather than coming up wioth a re-design and true fix. This is a safety issue and if nothing is done, lives will be lost as this veh is sold to more and more people.

16 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2001

On 06/15/2001 my 2000 Toyota Tundra received warranty repairs as follows: replaced front rotors, front pads, rear drums, rear brake shoes, rear parking brake adjustment strut kits on both wheels. All work was necessary due to vibration during braking above 40 mph. Classic Toyota in round rock, texas did the warranty work and told me there was a TSB calling for the replacement of the parking brake adjustment struts. Additionally, I was told this action would fix the vibration problems. My brakes operated smoothly for approx. 3,000 mi. My truck once again vibrates during braking conditions above 40 mph. This condition causes excessive vibrations that pose safety concerns, most especially in wet or hazardous driving conditions. I have spoken with the service department at classic Toyota in round rock, texas and they have indicated there are other customers with repeat brake issues similar to mine. I inquired about a permanant solution issue from Toyota and was told there isn't any information to support this. I frequent a Tundra owners' website and have discovered this is a wide-spread problem. I am concerned about how long Toyota will continue to replace affected brake parts before claiming it a wear issue. Additionally, I am concerned about how this matter will be handled when my warranty expires. Assistance with this issue would be appreciated. Sincerely, scott esau.

17 Brake Disc problem

19 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2001

This is not a failure but, is a great safety concern. Problem Toyota is aware of and reoccurs. Severe brake vibrations on down grade with load at higher speeds. 55-60mph. Tundrasolution web site shows others have this same problem and not corrected properly. Something that goes past warranty. Factory problem.

20 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2001

This is the second time my brake system has had to be replaced due to vibrations and warpage that almost caused a wreck.

21 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2001

Manufacturer defect with rear brake drums and front rotors and pads. Vehicle began vibrating badly when applying brakes. Dealer replaced rear drum, front brakes and rotors at approx. 6000 miles. Now at approx. 25k miles, same problem has returned. With only 11k miles more warranty left, will Toyota continue to replace these defective components past the warranty? I think not. Something needs to be done to force Toyota to address this known problem.

27 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2000

Front discs warp and require changing approximately every 12,000 miles. The vehicle shakes violently upon braking as the mileage approaches 12,000 miles on the new set of discs, creating an unsafe condition. Toyota should be held accountable to recall this vehicle and correct the problem.

28 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2000

Rack and pinion steering failure, causing front tires to wear excessively. Front brakes would grab/vibrate when vehicle got hot, and brakes were applied. Vehicle taken to an independent repair shop, and it informed consumer of rack and pinion steering problem. Please feel free to provide any further details on this matter.

29 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2000

Vehicle shakes while braking, consumer states vibration is also felt in steering wheel and pulsation is felt in brake pedal, vehicle is brought to dealer every 4-5 thousand miles, with no success in correcting problem, 2 TSB's were done on vehicle, br 006-00 and br 003-00, still no resolution.

30 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2000

Dealer said "no defects found".

31 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2000

Within 4000 miles of purchase of vehicle, it developed severe vibration during braking. Vehicle currently has 28000 miles on it and is on its third full set of brake rotors and drums. New rotors/drums seem to only provide 1000-4000 miles of smooth braking before vibration sets in again. Dealers fixing vehicle say vibration is due to heat induced warping of rotors and drums. Once parts are warped, vibrations get so severe it feels almost as if the rear end of the vehicle is hopping up and down during hard braking. I believe this defect greatly increases critical stopping distance. Manufacturer has not provided "permanent" fix for this defect, they have only replaced warped parts with new parts of same design. Soon vibration sets in again. Vehicle will soon be out of warranty.

32 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 04/28/2000
