The spare tire fell off unknown to us sometime last year (2009). The frame is a disaster in the making. Our mechanic is concerned at this rate it may be uninspectable in 1 to 2 years. I have been aware of problems with early model Toyota Tundra frame rust problems and have followed with interest Toyota's response [none]however, I feel obliged to inform you that on Friday 25th the gas tank straps failed while driving and the gas tank fell of the vehicle as luck would have it I was slowing down to make a turn so the consequences were limited. But, 30 seconds earlier at 55 mph this most likely would not have been a limited consequence situation. Updated ivoq 06/30/10.

My truck was brought in for a front end alignment and the mechanic brought to my attention that a frame cross member that carries a brake distribution block was rusted away and my brake lines were hanging. Also where my spare was attached was badly rusted. I then went to an auto body shop to inspect the frame. They said that the frame was badly rusted in many other areas that could lead to additional safety concerns. There was already an incident where my front tire fell to the ground when something attached to the frame broke. Updated 03/25/10 received pictures. Updated ivoq 09/15/10.
I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra pick up 4 x 4. On both sides of the truck, the frame between the front wheels and front bumper has perforation damage. The front bumper is about to fall off the truck. The rest of the truck frame has extensive rust.
The frame on my 2000 Toyota Tundra with only 40,000 miles is completely rotted out!. There are holes in the entirety of the frame the worst of if concentrated under the bed. My truck is virtually useless at this point. It is unable to hold any weight as the frame could break due to the holes and rot on it. I have been told not to put more than 1/2 tank of fuel at a time as the weight could break the rusted out straps holding up my gas tank. I have taken this to many professionals and the only fix is the swap out the frame with a new one. If I just patch where the holes are than the rest of the frame will rust around it as it is all bad material.
I am concerned about my 2000 Toyota Tundra. The frame has severe corrosion and there are actually pieces of the rear crossmember missing. The spare tire carrier under the rear of the vehicle came unattached about a year ago and the frame has gotten worse since then. I contacted Toyota and they have assigned a file number, however cannot tell me when or if anything will be done. I remember a few years ago when Ford recalled thousands of explorers for a firestone tire concern. This is a frame concern. Doesn't anyone realize the danger involved if these vehicles experience frame separation/failure while the vehicle is in motion? it will result in potential serious injury and possible fatality. I offered to send photographs to assist in their, (Toyota's) investigation. I was basically told that wasn't necessary. I will be taking the vehicle to a Toyota dealer for verification of this concern although it is pretty plain to see. As I said, there are pieces missing. Please help. Contacted Toyota about the problem (4/08) and received a response that my corrosion warranty ran out 9/05 and they could not do anything for me. They indicated they logged the incident and that was it. Concern is that various important points of frame structure are rusting very bad. I. E. Leaf spring supports, body mounts. This is my newest vehicle and by far has the worst rust. After Toyota indicated they could not help me I did try to paint and coat the frame for protection.
