Volkswagen Atlas owners have reported 46 problems related to warnings (under the forward collision avoidance category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volkswagen Atlas based on all problems reported for the Atlas.
When driving the forward collision warning comes on, beeps loudly and applies the vehicle brakes when nothing is in front of the vehicle. This caused someone to almost run into the rear of my vehicle. Also, if I use the automatic start feature of my vehicle, the cruise control feature is not available once the car is in motion and will not work until the car has been shut off and restart via the start button inside the car.

I received crash warnings while driving 60mph but no car was near to trigger the warning. Vehicle rear passenger side window rolled down on its own about 5 inches. Same trip, the rear driver side window rolled down about 5 inches.

Two separate instances. The first: emergency break engaged for no reason while in driveway at a low speed. It jolted the car back and I had to put car in park and then drive again. If this happened while anywhere else, it could cause an accident by being rear ended or a tail spin. Second incident: driving on interstate the forward collision warning symbol came on in red in addition to a red exclamation point. We were driving around 65mph with cars around us. The warning came on seemingly out of nowhere and then was gone several minutes later. There was no reason for this to occur. These issues are a major safety concern and we do not feel safe driving our brand new Atlas at this time.
Car will brake unexpectedly while driving which almost caused me to have several accidents while approaching traffic lights. Windows also open unexpectedly. All dashboard lights turn on while driving. Not very safe to drive at all.

I want to record my experience with my 2020 vw Atlas. I have experienced the front collision alerts and the braking when nothing was in my path. This might have caused an accident as the braking would be similar to a driver stopping short. The vehicle was never brought to a complete stop but felt like the car was not in the driver's control as it slowed. The forward collision light did illuminate during occurrences. Secondly, the airbag light is on and the dealership has advised the part is on backorder. Both of these cause concern for me as this is the main vehicle for my family and I transport three young children in. This vehicle has already had a recall to address the slippage when steering and I feel like that fix did not fully resolve my issue.

The entire electrical system went haywire. Driver aids malfunctioned, windows up/down, the parking brake engaged while driving. Dealer and vw claim it is an issue with the wiring harness. They have no parts to repair the car and there are a dozen more with the same issue at the dealer.
When we travel to see family in nh there is a set of train tracks that we need to drive over. In three separate instances when we drove over the tracks, the vehicle suddenly breaks for no reason and the front assist forward collision warning light comes on. It is very scary and unexpected and if a car were close behind us, it could definitely cause an accident.
The vehicle will sound the collision warning sound for no reason when no other vehicles are around. When slowly coming up to a red light with one car in front, after coming to a complete stop the vehicle beeped once and engaged the brakes. The second time this happened the vehicle was driving slowly in a school parking lot. There were cars all around but the sensors were beeping the whole time. When trying to drive forward the vehicle slammed the brakes on. Today the vehicle was stopped at an intersection, the rear camera came on, the beeping came on. The vehicle had to be shifted into park to stop the beeping and then put back into drive. This is a serious safety issue and should be a recall!.
On numerous occasions our 2019 vw Atlas sel premium has engaged the brakes even when there are no obstacles to avoid creating a dangerous, scary and unpredictable senecio for our family and other drivers around us. The problems with the automated braking have been attributed by service advisors as software issues with front assist, maneuver braking, and/or remote start".
My 2020 Volkswagen Atlas has been in and out of the shop. We purchased this vehicle in April 2020 with great hopes. . . We've been loyal vw customers and have owned 2 other vw vehicles prior. Issues began mid-Aug 2020, the check engine light turned on and we began hearing a rattling noise coming from the steering wheel when turning the wheel and began smelling a burnt odor coming from the engine. At this time, the vw shop did the following: the electro-mechanical steering was replaced and the acf valve was removed & replaced. Issue persisted. Went back in late Aug 2020 for the exact same issues as before; vw shop removed and reinstalled the acf filter once more. Rattling wasn't addressed. Taken again to the shop oct 2020 for rattling in undercarriage, and this time we were told the sway bars were causing the rattling noise. Those were replaced and the rattling noise subsided. Forward to beginning of Nov 2020, and the airbag light turns on; shop keeps the vehicle for 13 days, removes and reinstalls airbag sensor. Two days after we receive our vehicle, the airbag light turns on again. Shop keeps our vehicle for 63 days, removes and installs the door wiring harness. By end of Feb 2021, airbag light is on again; shop updates the airbag control module. We have not had airbag light come on after this most recent repair, but we are now experiencing brake sensor issues: we have had a apply the brakes alert come on while driving on the highway, as well as a front collision warning come on while there are no other vehicles remotely close to us at the time. Obviously, we are concerned for our safety while driving this vehicle.
The car randomly does not accelerate at low speeds when changing lanes in traffic, has a screeching noise upon acceleration that vw says is a normal loud noise because its too expensive to repair all the vehicles (that's the exact words from the vw mechanic). I have a video that shows the problem with exceleareation yet vw tells me they're nothing wrong with the car. The sway bars have been replaced two times in 6 months and the problem still isn't repaired. The auto collision randomly works.
