The alternator cable is burn also the fuse box on top of battery is burn. The dealership told me they see this happen on different Volkswagen in the houston area and the fuse box needs some kind of thermal protection because the battery gets to hot. If I place some kind of thermal protection I will be held liable. The dealership nor the manufacturer are willing to help, they just told me a had 12 month warranty and if this happens again after 12 months it will be my expense. I had a 40,000 mile service on 10-3-07 which include inspecting battery which cost over $400. 00.

Failure Date: 01/23/2003

It could potentially effect your abs system and could start a fire. The 3 green fuses on top of the battery. There in a small cover. Open the cover and check the fuse located to the passenger side. This is the fuse for the ac compressor and fans. I saw 3 cars with severely melted and burned connectors. The fuses don't blow, or they melt into the connector allowing current to continue to flow. This is a huge hazard and I want to voice my concerns before anyone looses a car to this. The cars that I checked were all 1999-2001 cars and all use the ac pretty frequently. I had to replace the part since I was out of warranty. See here for more cases over 26 documented. . Read more...

Failure Date: 10/15/2000

The vw dealership repaired this electrical problem caused by the engine fan control box which also burned wires in the engine harness the dealership only repaired what they considered necessary. I was driving 12/14/00, during the rain and stopped the vehicle and the windshield wipers, signal lights, air condition, fan control for heat, etc. , and the ememergency brake light remained on without being pulled up. I do not know what else may have not been working in the vehicle during the rain. I paid almost $700. 00 tp have this electrical problem fixed after only owning the car for only 4 months. Could someone please assist me in finding out repair information before I invest any more $$$ into this vehicle?.

Failure Date: 06/12/2000

At 1 1/2 months of ownership the check engine light came on "with no fault found" took 1 1/2 years and 6 service visits to fix. The car often goes forward while in reveres and has shifting problems, have had the transmission "adjusted" 3 times still has problems. Oil light doesnt go on when oil is low. Battery light doesnt go on when the batter is dying. Wiring to headlight keeps "loosening" causing the headlights to fail. Had rear and front brakes replaced due to low ground clearance and snow getting lodged in them and freezing.
