Electrical System Problems of Volkswagen Beetle - part 1

My entire dashboard caught fire due to my a/c controls going out. My a/c dial started smoking before it finally caught fire. My dashboard is now melted where the a/c controls belong.

Terminal box above battery has a black wire that get extremely hot and melts in its receptacle in the terminal box. Have replaced the terminal box and that one was also melted within a few days after installation of the new box.

My car will randomly die after sitting at a light or pulling onto the highway or just pulling out of my garage. The car starts up and sounds fine, when I put it in reverse to pull out of the garage, it will die while moving backwards. Sitting at a red light, the car if running fine. When I accelerate after turning green, it dies. After driving for 12 minutes or so I stop at mcdonald and go through the drive thru. After getting my food, I pull onto the highway and the car dies. There was a gas station right next to the mcdonalds, so I was able to coast into the gas station. When the car dies, it immediately starts up again and will drive fine after that. I've also been having issues with it jerking. I've taken it to the vw dealership numerous times. They hook it up to see if there are any error codes and there are none. They try to find something to fix, but each time the car might work for a couple of weeks, but the jerking and dying continues. With the randomness of this, the car just doesn't feel safe to drive. I have to be very cautious not to pull out in front of any vehicle that is close for the potential of it dying. I'm calling again today to see if I can get them to fix the crank sensor as I have found others to have the same issue and that seems to fix it. I've spent several thousand dollars to try to get it fixed, but since it doesn't throw any error codes and the randomness of this issue, it's hard to replicate.

Driving 60miles an hour the entire car shot down. No lights, no control, the car was completely off it was a very scary situation the car still not turning on.

Speedometer stops working. My 16 year old daughter can’t tell how fast she is going when the speedometer stops working. And the screen freezes. Cruise control does not work.

The key in the key cylinder or tear lock would not remove. The automobile would not shut down. I looked in youtube tube and found out that since 2010 this incident has been occurring in Volkswagen Beetles I had to extract the fuel pump fuse to stop the engine. And then disconnect the battery. It appears that this problem is pandemic to this automobile if I had been in a remote area it would’ve been a serious problem. Autonation Volkswagen in columbus has estimated the cost to be $1500 to replace the tear lock the cylinder and the bolt.

I was driving with my child sitting in the passenger seat and we had the heated seats turned on the setting of 2. After a few minutes she yelled out “my butt is on fire!” she sat up off the seat to reveal a large black charred burnt hole in the leather seat!.

Car caught on fire 2 times it was electrical and fuel problem the fire department was present. I reported this once already and the company acted like they didnt care.

My vw Beetle has pushbutton start. The ignition can turn off when not in park. This was called a rollaway problem in keyed ignition models, but not pushbutton. I took it to dealer and they said not covered by warranty and no recall. This is as dangerous as in the keyed ignition model. I saw a report of a similar rollaway that vw refused to cover. Also, apparently pushed button while underway. Engine stopped while in traffic. Rolled to side of road and restarted without incident.

Driver and passenger windows go down all by themselves without the key even being in the ignition. Yes it is available to be fixed. My safety could be at risk if the window goes down and I'm not at home and some stranger lets themselves in my car and waits for my return. I've gone to break and I go out to my car and the window is half down. Dealership replaced something related to the windows unknown to exactly what. No bells or whistles its happened at least 6 times now once on the passenger side the rest on the drivers side. Started when it got really really cold out.

The contact owns a 2008 Volkswagen Beetle. The contact stated that while at a red light, sparks began to emit from the passenger side glove box without warning. The contact immediately shut off the engine and all the occupants evacuated the vehicle. The motorist behind her witnessed what had happened and assisted with unhooking the battery cable as a small fire began to erupt on the passenger side floor mats. The motorist's wife was able to retrieve a fire extinguisher from a person's home and extinguish the fire. The authorities were not called to the scene. No injuries were reported and a police report was not filed. Due to the failure, the vehicle was initially towed to an independent mechanic who could not repair the vehicle and recommended the vehicle be towed to a dealer; the vehicle was then towed to her home. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

The engine was running and kept running with key turned off, and the key could not be removed either. We had to pay vw to repair the problem and we found out that is not an isolated problem.

Center dash screen goes black occasionally which prevents using the backup camera, radio, and phone. Sometimes it will reboot by itself after several minutes, other times I have to shut the car off, wait, and restart the car. It doesn’t always reboot the first time. This has happened at least 6 times.

I was driving on the highway with my daughter and girlfriend when suddenly the car caught an electrical fire out of nowhere. I pulled over and cloudy smoke was arising luckily the state trooper had a fire extinguisher to put it out before the car caught on heavy flames.

Transmission control module communication errors (p0864) caused vehicle to shut down at high speed (55mph) killing power steering and abs system on a curvy country road.

Phone button doesn't work, no response. Bluetooth isn't discoverable. I am calling his a safety issue because I can't use my phone hands free as I thought I would be able to. Not sure if the function is broken or disconnected. It was like this when I bought it.

The tail light connector rotted while l was driving on the street.

Tsi shooting oil through muffler. Only 93,000 miles on the car. Hard shifting, loss of power. Vehicle in motion.

The air conditioner compressor stop working.

I wasa driving and the engine lost power and everything shut down. Aoll the lights came on on the dashand it jujst stop power the stearing wheel locked . I was in a residential neighborhod going speed limit if I had been on the freeway I dont know what would of happen , im scared to drive my car now.

Have had issue with backup camera for 3 years. Have told vw about this for 3 years when turning in car for maintenance and they keep telling me nothing is wrong. Finally it quit working completely. Took it in and they told me it will take 4 to 5 months to get parts. They say it's not their problem but the supplier. Keep checking back with status after turning it in and found out parts weren't even on order till 2 weeks after turning car in for problem. It's been 2 1/2 months and no status as of yet for parts. They say they checked around the country for parts and theres none. I found a system on the internet that can be purchased to fix the problem. . They will not go that way.

Gas fill door will not open. Gas fill door should open when car is unlocked, but doesn't.

Fuse that controls reading or map light in cabin and external lighting outside for night driving continually fails (3). Safety issue because rear lights at night only come on when brakes applied.

Fuse box melted twice. The last time totally shut the car down. Vw does not have a fix for this problem. Will sell you new box but will not warentee the new box will not fail again as they do not know why it happens. As I was driving in traffic dashboard warning lights came on and the ac stopped working and the car slowed and lost some power. I was able to get off the road and pull into a repair shop that just happened to be right there. They diagnosed that the fuse box had melted.

When driving her 2008 vw Beetle at approximately 15 mph during a light rainfall, my daughter hit a bump in the road (not a huge significant bump, just a bump) the entire driver's side headlight assembly headlamp/bucket and all came detached from the vehicle completely. They electrical assembly became unplugged and the entire unit came out of the cylindrical compartment that houses the headlight. The entire housing unit, including the bulb and all related parts came out and went crashing onto the pavement where it was struck by a car behind me and smashed into pieces all down the road. This is a major safety issue. It was a danger to both my child and the vehicle behind her and any pedestrians nearby. In FL the law requires you drive with headlights on in the rain, so although it was daytime, she was forced to drive illegally without her headlight causing her to be less visible to other drivers. The car is unusable in the evening or early morning now until we get it fixed. Clearly, after reading the many complaints, you tube videos on how to "fix" the loose electrical problem, and many vw bug drivers' horror stories of losing sometimes just the electrical connection (bad enough on its own), but also in some cases, like my daughter's, the entire headlight and it's housing unit came broke away from the vehicle just from hitting a bump in the road. Unacceptable.

Tl- the contact owns a 2012 Volkswagen Beetle. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the contact had experienced complete electrical failure. The contact had to restart the vehicle in order for the vehicle to operate as needed. No warning light illuminate prior to the failure; however, the contact stated that the vehicle does make a beeping sound prior to the failure. The driver side window is defective. The window shutters up & down all by itself, both in park, and while driving. When it does this, I can't shut the window using the window up & down button. The window goes down 1/2 while driving and then locks. I had it to tynans dealership in aurora CO 3 times now. They replaced the locking mechanism back in oct. It helped for about a month. Now it is doing it again. There are times I have gone into the store, came back out, and my window was down 1/2 way - and I never rolled it down! Tl- the contact owns a 2015 Volkswagen Beetle. The contact stated while his daughter was driving 35 mph, when 2 multiple warning light was illuminated and when depressing the brake pedal failed to function. The driver was able to use the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was not drivable. The vehicle was towed to independent mechanic where they were unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was taken to unknown local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the rear passenger sensor to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer has been informed of failure. The failure mileage was 37,000. The VIN number was not available. Dp.

The window keeps shuttering up & down after getting in the car and shutting the door with ignition on. . The window doesn't close all the way, and the auto door lock doesn't work. The window shutters up & down all on its own. Brought car to dealership they replaced the door lock. This still did not fix the problem. I have a video showing the issue after the door lock was replaced.

Over time, the ignition will not turn whenever the key is inserted. This occurs especially often in warmer weather, which can become a danger as the driver sits and wrestles with the key trying to get it to turn in the ignition in an incredibly hot car. It most often happens when the car is stationary and already turned off, though it has happened a few times after parking, and being unable to turn the key back and turn the car off.

Around 7/8/19 my key started getting stuck in the on position car running. I to be after reading complaints and seen there was an extended warranty on the steering lock so they fixed that no problem. When I got the car back the key was already in ignition. I went to gas station took key out and opened door and it was chiming like the keys were still on the ignition I couldn't even use the key fob to lock doors. I took back to be on 8/2/19 told them I had no problems til they worked on it so they didn't charge me a diagnostic fee when they called to say that the tumbler was bad and that wasn't covered by the extended warranty. I said it didn't do it before you messed with it but they refuse to fix what they broke and said they have to order the part from mexico.
