41 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 09/17/2018

This car has had many electrical issues. The first time it was in the dealership due to lights, turning signals not working. The second time about 2 years later I lost all electrical controls. No lights, wipers, ac fan, ac adapter, radio, turn signals. Now just 5 months later I am noticing headlight issues. I have taken it back to the vw of ocala, they claim there is no electrical issue that I just need bulb replacement. After driving over an hour to get my car, I get in to find my windows are no longer working now.

42 Electrical System problem of the 2017 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 09/03/2018

Weather conditions: rain. After relatively short drive garaged vehicle and turned engine off. Very noticeable burning odor appears to come from engine compartment. Loud motor noise coming from rear area (electrical motor noise not engine/fan noise) which continued for approximately thirty minutes. I am aware of the fuel pump running for a second or two when I first open the drivers door under normal conditions. This is a quiet hum, hardly noticeable, and not an issue. The noise addressed above is quite loud and abnormal ( almost like a bearing running dry). Week later same weather conditions rain. Ran vehicle on short shopping trip and, again, upon garaging: same symptoms. Took vehicle to authorized vw dealership. Their analysis: unable to find anything wrong. Vehicle was dry at the time and understand they could not fix anything that does not occur while they are checking. Very nervous because this problem appears limited to rain/water encroachment somewhere in/on the vehicle during inclement operations. Vehicle appears to function normally during operations in rainy weatherproblem noticeable only when garaged and turned off.

43 Electrical System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 09/01/2018

The ignition key will not turn off the car and is stuck in the ignition. It will not turn back as you normally would to turn off the car and remove the key. The only way to shut the car off is to pull the fuel pump relay/fuse. The car can be locked manually using the other key in the exterior door handle. Than the battery must be disconnected in order to prevent drain from the accessories.

44 Electrical System problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 08/29/2018

I have a 2005 vw Beetle convertible. I am having problems with my air bag light on my dashboard. The air bag light will not turn off. I took my car to the dealership and they said that the airbag control module was not working. I am not able to get my car inspected because the sensor light will not turn off! I looked up recall parts for my car, and I now see that there is a recall on the air bag: frontal: sensor / control module. The recall states that the soldier joint may crack under certain high temperature conditions, and that the air bag indicator light will illuminate and the fall back algorithm will ensure that the air bags deploy. Hopefully I will not need them and will not get into an accident. I want the dealer to replace this control module that was recalled, and fix my car so I can get it to pass inspection, and get back to driving it safely. Thank you, (xxxxx) parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

45 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 06/19/2018

I have noticed my center driver-side headlight dim/turn off for some time thinking the headlight was bad. I had the headlight replaced in February but still had people tell me it was out and at times I could see this in the reflection of truck tailgates, etc. The surrounding daytime running light can make it hard to tell. However, in the last couple weeks, every two to three minutes, sometimes after noticing the initial dim of the driver-side head light, all light turn off leaving the car in motion in the dark. This has happened both on local roads and highway. Engaging the fog lights may extend the time between shut-offs by another minute or so. By turning the lights off and waiting a second, then turning them back on, all lights come back. Doing so too quickly does not always work. The dealership mechanic feels it is capacitor or similar electric issue in the j519 body control module that receives power for the lights and controls them from there. Being a safety issue, I have to wonder if creating such a weak-link to power all nighttime running lights is not recall worthy. He suggested full module replacement I do have video to share of this occurring.

Key is stuck in the ignition and the car will not power off, not even after taking out the battery. Vw told me they had no idea how to help me and had never seen this happen before. When I look it up online, this is a common problem with Beetles and jettas.

55 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 07/30/2017

A year ago I had the drivers side window fixed, and since then, the window has been faulty. I own a convertible, so the windows are supposed to go down half an inch and mine does not. Most times when I close the door, the window is over the top of the car, leaving a crack between the window and my car door. Last night, July 30th of 2017, I had rolled down my back window while idle and heard something compareable to a fork in a garbage disposal. I immediately stopped rolling the window down because I knew it would not come back up, seeing as I had just fixed this problem less than a year ago with the front window when I was driving and the same exact thing happened and my car was in the shop for a week and a half. I proceeded to look online to look for a recall with no luck. Although I did find that I am not the only one who has had this issue. Not only is this fix quite costly, but it's a safety hazard. Not to mention that it's not due to the carelessness of the owner, but simply fault of the manufacturer. I proceeded to call vw with no luck but to be directed here to you. I'm asking for a recall to be put into action. Thank you.

63 Electrical System problem of the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 01/17/2017

The dealership states the right front abs harness came off first and rubbed through causing a bunch of electrical problems. They states the abs harness came off because the harness bracket was bent. This is a 12 and a half month old vehicle which has only been serviced at the dealership. There is no history of hitting anything. The vehicle was started out in failure mode and was not like this the last time the vehicle was driven. This created unsafe driving conditions because the pcm put the vehicle in limp mode. We drive the vehicle directly to the dealership. They described the problem.

64 Electrical System problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 12/25/2016

His complaint consists of a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle, in which it doesn't apply to any warranty whats so ever. Whether it's a new vehicle or not. The problem is with the switchblade programmable type key with remote. Volkswagen has known about the problem with these type keys for sometime but has failed the consumers and the government to provide a solution to the problem. They instead take the approach, which profit outweighs the consumers, they put profit before consumers, and safety. These keys produce a ''danger'' to not only the consumers but everyone on the highways around them the safety and marksmanship of the key can break off during use, so if this happens during a crash, the consumer would be unable to turn off the vehicle which again produces an immediate ''danger''. The remote switchblade key is only secured by a very cheap made plastic. It's very poorly designed and made. If the encasing that holds the key was made out of metal or aluminum this would solve the problem. Another problem with the key, is that Volkswagen made the key programmable with a chip, so the key has to be cut down the middle, and programmed, which means the vehicle has to be connected to a computer at the dealership and usually takes about one hour at a cost of $245. 00. It's very obvious that the manufacture does this for pure profit, and to deter the consumer from going elsewhere to have such key made. I urge NHTSA to take immediate action to eliminate anyone from being injured or killed. These emails will be kept as proof and for the record that this very ''important and safety issue'' has been sent to you as evidence, for future lawsuits etc concerning this matter. Happened while driving.

65 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 08/03/2016

1. Vehicle was stationary in my drive way (and on several occasions, parked in a lot), convertible roof stalls upon opening. You have to stop pressing button and try again. Eventually it starts again and opens. Vw service unable to replicate. They grease the equipment involved hoping it corrects the problem. 2. When car was new, not windshield wiper problems were noted. After a year the drivers side squirts out in such a way that the wiper doesn't get wet enough to clean window, thus leaving blurry streaks that impedes driver's side vision. Passenger side ok. Took car in 2 times, they say they adjust spray. Problem still there even after replacing wipers with brand new (volkswagon brand) wipers. Just had the spray fixed again last week. Afraid to see if it is any better. Will write another report if problem persists. Had convertible top gears greased again last week. I wonder if hot weather is effecting the top to open?.

66 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 08/03/2016

We purchase our 2002 vw beatle from a private 6 years ago. We have replaced the fuse box above the battery on 3 previous occasions as the box shorts out and melts causing the car to turn off and not restart. The first two times we had repair facilities fix the problem to the tune of $500 plus each time. The 3rd time this happened I ordered the part on line and did the repair myself. Well it just burned out again this week which now makes 4 times in a 6 year history this has occurred. I talked with vw concerning this and they said the cable was too small when vw first manufactured the car. So the 3rd time it went out I replaced the so called faulty cable as well. Well I guess that wasn't the problem as I said it now burned up again and that was replacing the cable and going to a larger gage size wire that vw suggested. Not what should I just expect it to happen again. Needless to say I have seen this same complaint several times when is vw going to stand up and take responsibility. I know have spent over $1500 fixing the same thing now for the 4th time. Very disappointing vw.

The fuse box is burning because some cables are too small and according to the mechanics, it is something extremely common but according to me, it is not supposed to happen.

69 Electrical System problem of the 2015 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 05/29/2016

Esp light will come on and critical error will flash when first starting vehicle. Vehicle will sutter and will not start. When vehicle is taken to have the error message read no record is found in the car's computer. This has happened several times. Most recently an error message flashed on the screen and the whole car went dead.

70 Electrical System problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 05/19/2016

The contact owned a 1999 Volkswagen Beetle. The contact stated that there was an abnormal noise while driving in the middle lane of the road. The contact stated that smoke emitted near the left part of the dashboard close to the steering wheel. In addition, due to the extensive nature of the smoke, the contact had to engage the hazard lights and exited the vehicle while in the lane. The fire department extinguished the flames. A police officer was present to direct traffic and a report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a yard. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14e007000 (engine and engine cooling). The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 07v063000 (exterior lighting) and 06v183000 (exterior lighting). The manufacturer was notified of the failure months ago and was to provide further testing to determine the failure. The contact kept calling, but received no response from the manufacturer. The vehicle was destroyed. The approximate failure mileage was 125,000.
