The drivers side window regulator recently failed on my 2002 vw Golf. This part secures the window to the power window mechanism, and keeps the window up. The failure occurred while I was leaving a toll booth. I pressed the button to raise the window, heard a crack, and then the entire window violently crashed down into the interior of the door, and attempts to raise the window failed. I was lucky that I was only driving about 20 mph at the time, but unfortunately I had to drive home five hours with the windows down. It was a very unpleasant experience. When I returned home, upon bringing the car in to the dealership, I learned that it was the window regulator that had failed. I also learned that this part has failed numerous times on Golfs of this model year (and other years), and that an extended warranty of 7 years was placed on the part. I strongly believe that a recall should have been placed on this part instead of simply a warranty extension. I have heard numerous anecdotes of people having this same problem. The window crashes violently, and had I been driving fast or in traffic, this could have caused an accident very easily. Whats more, one cannot protect the car from theft or water damage when the window wont close. According to vw, a sturdier replacement part was designed around 2002, and my car is now being fixed with this part.

Front passenger side window comes off track. Window falls into door and window can not be closed. This happened to me as I was driving with my 8 week old daughter and 3 year old son. It is very dangerous because it happened on highway and there was alot of wind coming into car on young children. This has happened to many vw owners, vw has extended warranty to 7 years due to this.
Nice day, had windows rolled down. Was about to get onto the highway so I hit the window up switch and the right front passenger window slammed into the door. Obviously came off track, taking to the dealer today to see if window smashed as well.

My rear passenger widow will not roll down because of a faulty window regulator. Vw knows the problem exists because they have to replace the front window regulators that have a similar desing using plastic window clips. I have children that travel in the car frequently and if we were in an accident they would not be able to roll the window down and get out of the car. I feel that this is a safety concern. I realize that the gti version of my car doesn't have windows that roll down in the back but I didn't buy that car because I have kids that need to ride in the car. Therefore I need windows that roll down too. I took the car to a vw dealer because they told me that they would fix it under the extended service thing that the front window are fixxed under. After they took the car, they called me and told me that it doesn't cover the rear windows. So, I declined getting it fixxed by them and will repair it myself. The part costs $120 for the rear windows. The front window have a repair kit that sells for about $20 (it just replaces the faulty part, not the whole unit as the rear windows do). At a minimum they should sell a repair kit for the rear windows.

Recall repair work was performed on vehicle, consumer was charged $313. 63 and repairs were half completed. Since it was a recall, the work performed was suppose to be free of charge. The dealer only performed half the work and left a broken part in the door which had to be removed by taking the door apart again. They refused to refund the $313. 63 and repair the passenger side door which was part of the recall. They only fixed the driver door. Consumer would like the monies reimbursed plus an addition $313. 63 for have the repairs completed at another dealer. The consumer also requested a life-time warranty on the work o'brien already did, $50. Per day for the two days the consumer had no vehicle, mailing and copying cost.

Consumer states that the plastic connectors which keep the side door windows in place are breaking and causes the windows to drop down inside the doors. Problem has been repaired four times . Feel free to provide any further information.
I purchased this car back in the fall of 2001. It was a "demo" car and only had 7000 miles on it. The next summer my back driver's side window would no longer work. There was no reason for this window to not work. It was not damaged by anyone. My warranty had run out so I didn't bother to call the dealer. I'm now learning that volkswagon is and have been having serious promblems with their windows. The dealer doesn't want to fix it for free and I called the customer service hot-line for Volkswagen and they don't want to take responsiblity for this issue either. They both admitted to me that yes there are problems with the windows on many of their vehicles.

On memorial day weekend, as I was preparing to leave for work, I powered down my front passenger window. When I went to power back up, the window would not move and it made a terrible grinding noise. The window was frozen in the down position. The window was rarely powered up/down in the first two years of use. When I attempted to schedule a service appointment with a local dealership (not niello), I could not be seen for several days. Due to my busy work schedule, one forty-five dollar cab ride to work, and a recently expired automobile warranty, I asked my husband to repair the car. After carefully removing the glass, the internal door panel, and electrical wiring harness, he removed the internal door panel/lifter assembly. The problem was immediately visible. A poorly designed, cheaply manufactured, inferior plastic slider had been unable to resist the weight of the window, the resistance of the riser, or the pull of the cable when powered by the window regulator. On may 29, 2002, I visited roseville Volkswagen's parts department. Unfortunately, one cannot purchase just the plastic slider (the defective part). This part if sold alone, could not amount to much more than $20. Instead, the whole internal door panel part must be purchased at $160. According to the parts department employee, Volkswagen is covering this repair up to 40,000 miles. Thus, I submitted the invoice for the $160 part, the defective slider, and a letter requesting reimbursement for the part to Volkswagen of America. My request for reimbursement was denied. Fortunately for me, I was not in an unsafe place when the window froze in the down position. Considering all of the listings for this problem on the NHTSA website alone, I would hope that Volkswagen is making an effort to change this flawed design. I would also expect that Volkswagen should make the slider available for purchase as an individual part. Thank you.

The local dealership was not willing to repair the problem under warranty or research the problem. There were three vheicles in front of mine in the service bay with the same problem but the service writer stated he had never heard that there was a malfunction with the side windows.
1. Passenger front window drops down in door. Has happened twice. There were four other people at the dealer for the same problem at the same time I was there. I was told it was an "arizona" problem and that the part that holds the window up melts and breaks. I was driving down the highway when my window fell down causing me to become distracted by the incident and nearly causing an accident. 2. Air bag light went on for no reason. Cost tom me was $618 to replace a faulty airbag and wiring harness. I believe that should be covered even out of warranty since there is nothing I could have possibly done to cause the airbag to become defective. 3. Cruise control disengages when the right turn signal is applied. This happened for months unti the cruise control went out completely. I have heard this failure is due to a ribbon cable which gets broken in the steering column. My first one broke just before the 24k warranty expired. The second one broke on schedule at about 50k. This is very dangerous since if you pas someone with the cruise control on and then use your turn signal to get back over the cruise is deactivated causing the car to abruptly slow down in front of the car you were trying to pass.
1. Transmission control module failure. Car was not able to start. Was towed for repair. This chip has been replaced twice. 2. Car began making severe jerking movements, randomly. Usually these jumps occur within the first 10 minutes of driving the vehicle but can occur later. The severity of the jerks is also variable. 3. The car was in the shop for over a month. The problem was not corrected. 4. The car consumes an unusual high amount of motor oil (more than a quart approximately every 1,000 miles). 5. Vw was running a oil consumption test but they insisted the consumption level was normal for this type of engine. The problem still exists. I have been experiencing numerous mechanical problems with the vehicle soon after purchase in 2002. I have always tried to negotiate with vw. I have written letters and they have been reluctant to solve the problem in a satisfactory way. I have read about the lemon law but my time allowance has expired. The car is still under warranty until January 2006. In addition to the engine/ transmission problems, I have had problems with all my windows rolling down automatically as I try to close them. There was a recall on this. This has been examined over 5 times. The panels were replaced. The problem still persists. I am not able to give an exact date of an incident because there are many. All of these dates have been documented. I am giving a date of January 2002 as the incident date (when the car was purchased). I feel vw has evaded responsibility in correcting the problems and has created an unsafe vehicle. The number of failures and the inability to correct them is unacceptable. I feel my problems were not addressed seriously and were dismissed without concern for my safety and public safety in general.

Window regulator has broken 4 times, 3 on the driver's side & 1 on the passenger's side. Air conditioning compressor has broken as well on a 2 year old car purchased as new! Volkswagen has refused to pay or help with any of the costs of said parts.

I have had 3 out of 4 power windows (one twice) go down and fail to come back up. I was originally told that this was an isolated incident. I have come to find out that this is occuring with such regularity my dealership can not keep the part in stock. I am just waiting for window #4 to break while I am at work which is not the most savory neighborhood.

Wife's 1999 Volkswagen getta also had a window regulator fail and the window fell into the door.
3 window regulators have failed and been replaced under 2year/24000mile warranty. This is obvious a faulty piece. Vw should recall the part because of the potential safety issues apparent should the window fall off of the track while at highway speeds.
Passenger side window fell off its track on two occaisions. Renders window totally inoperative. Failure first occured around 40000 miles and then at 50000.
When window regulator fails, the window drops in the door. If driving in rain or -20 degrees weather, it becomes a safety hazard. I'd like to see a recall soon on this.
Power windows on three occasions on both front windows, with no cause fell down in window well. This occurred once on driver's side, and twice on passenger's side. Owner stated while trying to get this repaired three other people were at the dealer for the same problem. Dealership was backed up due to numerous replacement requests.
Although my power window regulator and clips have not failed yet, this is a know problem to vw. They have recently designed a "kit" which has upgraded metal parts, and not plastic parts. They are replacing the pieces after they break, after window falls down into the track. Some dealers cover part of the cost ($200!?), some don't. This is a known defect and I think vw should be recalling the cars before failure to replace the window clips and regulators. The years affected are 2000 - 2002, the Golf and jetta (and maybe the beetle). Presently repair parts are backordered due to the demand.
