1 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2011 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 08/27/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2011 Volkswagen Golf. Within less than two months of owning the vehicle, the horn failed to work. The dealer (anthony carvoni Volkswagen, 12 meriden pl, melvillee, NY, 516-848-7315) diagnosed that the horn needed to be replaced and stated that it was not related to the air bag being electrically connected to the horn. An independent mechanic diagnosed that the horn and the driver's side air bag needed to be replaced. The contact was uncertain of what air bag recall repairs were completed before the vehicle was sold. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was not available.

4 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 01/13/2011

Multiple airbag failures 01218 - side airbag igniter; passenger side (n200) 001 - upper limit exceeded - intermittent - mil on 01217 - side airbag igniter; driver side (n199) 001 - upper limit exceeded - intermittent - mil on the dtc's seem to be generated during cold weather periods when the seats are moved. This happens at least 1 - 2 times per year. Vehicle has never been moving when these codes were generated. Dealer has completed the TSB for the drivers side airbag wiring, but the problem is still occurring. Passenger seat does not have a TSB for the airbag wiring. Dealer requires that the code be cleared at the dealership for $100 per incident. Problematic airbags are disabled until the fault code is cleared from the system. Both codes have appeared multiple times, at least 4, on this same vehicle and this problem is also found on multiple vw models.

I have contacted my local vw service shop and will take the car in so they can identify the cause of the deployment.

I was driving down the parks highway near talkeetna, alaska in my 2002 vw Golf and had the side-curtain and passenger seat airbags deploy suddenly for no apparent reason. 5 persons were in the car, all experienced a loud bang and a car full of acrid smoke, two were struck as the bag deployed. I stopped at the side of the road to check out the passengers and find out what happened. No damage was done to the vehicle to cause airbag deployment, and it was in no way impacted or subjected to extreme driving forces. I believe my car to be defective and am seeking payment from Volkswagen.

13 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 05/25/2006

Spontaneous air bag deployment on right side of my 2 door 2002 vw Golf tdi while driving on a smooth blacktop road. While driving at approximately 30 mph, the left side curtain and seat air bags deployed by them selves. The vehicle did not hit a bump or pothole or anything else in the road. The vehicle was not hit by anything. The vehicle was not involved in an accident prior to or during the air bag deployment. My wife was in the passenger seat and was hit by the deployed air bag. She had a red sore on her right arm and had hearing problems in her right ear for one day. Her hearing returned too normal the next day and all soreness in her right arm was gone within two days.

14 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 10/28/2005

The contact stated while driving at 40 mph the driver's side curtain and seat airbag deployed with no collision. This happened where a side street meets a main street. He went to the emergency room and was suffering from frequent headaches and hearing loss in left ear. He has to see a specialist for the hearing loss. The rear passenger's hand was pinched between the window and airbag. This caused swelling in his hand. The insurance company stated it was a manufacturing defect. No corrections have been made at this time.

15 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 05/15/2005

Passenger side air bag inadvertently deployed with no provocation.

16 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 03/13/2005

The seat-mounted side airbags and side-curtain airbags for the passenger side of my car deployed with no side-impact crash. I was in a parking lot making a right turn when the above mentioned airbags deployed. Luckily, there was no one in the passenger seat, so there were no injuries as a result. I took my car into a vw dealership and they ran some diagnostics on it. They claim that my car's computer registered a collision and that's why my airbags went off, though they never provided me with a copy of the results of the diagnostic. I told them there was no way my car was involved in a collision at the time the airbags deployed, or within the past year before they had deployed, and they said that I must have hit a pothole or something and that I should contact my insurance company. My insurance policy does not cover the replacement of airbags when no collision was involved, and the adjuster feels that they must have deployed as a result of faulty wiring. This incident occurred fairly recently, and I refuse to pay the $3500 for these repairs out of pocket, so they have not been replaced yet, and will not be replaced until I speak further with Volkswagen.

17 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Golf

21 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 10/04/2004

While driving on a rather bumpy street (no major pot holes), side-airbag and curtains on the driver side popped out. It was not a collision, and the bumper did not hit anything. Service shop at dealer found a couple of damages on oil pan and control-arm, and therefore insisted the airbag deployment was not due to a mal-function. The car is being repaired (including the re-upholstery and damaged seat belt due to the airbag eruption). It is treated as an accident by my auto insurance.

22 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 09/21/2004

While driving vehicle at a moderate speed the air bag on passenger's side deployed inadvertently. The consumer took vehicle back to the dealer, and was told by the service technician that the vehicle was in an accident. 23 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Driving on highway and hit small bump in road, such that you would hit many times a day while driving, and passenger side airbags and window curtains deployed. 25 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 04/16/2004

While traveling over a rough stretch of road the passenger side seat and window airbags deployed. It should be noted there was no side collision, impact or body damage. The dealer insists that a side impact must have occured, and that I wil be responsible for the estimated $3500 in repairs. I stil await word as to whether my insurance policy covers this type of claim. So far I've ben told they may not cover it.

26 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 04/01/2004

I bought a new vw Golf in February 2004. At about 6:30 p. M. On 4/1, I drove over a pothole (or some bump in the road) while driving on storrow drive in boston and suddenly two airbags deployed on the driver side of my car and my seat belt appeared to recoil. The two airbags that deployed were the side airbag and the curtain airbag. I brought my car into a boston dealer/service department the following morning. After inspecting the car, the service department said there was no physical damage to the car (except of course the deployed airbags and broken seat belt), but that there was "crash data" on the car's computer. The service department went on to say that this is not a warranty situation because the car detected a crash (despite the fact that there was admittedly no damage to the car), causing the airbags to deploy.

27 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 01/02/2004

While driving at 10 mph left rim hit the curb. As a result, the side curtains and seat airbags deployed.

28 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 12/08/2003

I was driving about 10-15 miles a hour and my right rim might have slightly hit the curb and my passenger side airbag and curtains deployed. I took it right away to the dealer, and they said there is a crash code and will not pay for it. I contacted vw of America many times and they say to claim it through insurance. There is no visible damage to my car at all so I think it a faulty crash code!.

29 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 10/23/2003

While proceeding from a light and making a right hand turn at about 25 mph consumer hit a bump, and air bags deployed.

30 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 06/05/2003

I hit a medium size pothole in the road and my passenger side airbags inflated. Dealer says the module says the car was in danger of tipping over and there was no malfunction. My rear tire was damaged as there is a bubble in the sidewall but there was no undercarriage damage and there was no impact.

31 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 03/05/2003

Passenger side air bags deployed despite vehicle being in collision or impact. Vehicle was on freeway when all of a sudden air bags deployed. Dealer claims sensor indicates impact, but there was no impact.

32 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 03/02/2003

March 2, '03 while traveling on a secondary road with 5 occupants, in a non-accident event, the subject vehicle passed over a large metal plate that is used to cover road work for the evening or weekend. Without warning the defective airbag system deployed the psgr side airbags! no damage or impacts were noted on the passenger side of the vehicle body. However, a small scratch was noted underneath the vehicle between the doors (right side) and what appeared to be a thumb print in the undercoating under the front passenger seat. Neither or both may be related to the incident. Vw indicated that they believe that one or both of the marks, being located very near to the sensors, caused the deployment. Although unknown for certain, it is possible that a bolt or some other object may have been lying on the metal plate and may have been pinched by a tire - causing it to strike the bottom of the vehicle. In no way an incident that should have deployed the airbag system. Vw has advised that "an outside influence" caused the airbag to deploy and stated to the vehicle owner that "the sensors cannot determine whether a stone is hitting the vehicle or if a truck is hitting the vehicle. " a statement that also indicates a defective system . While it's understood that sensors are to "sense" that something has occurred, the "airbag control module" should interpret the information being sent by the sensor and be able to make a more reasonable assessment. In any event, it is important to note that generally vehicles are not struck by other vehicles from underneath. Very important note as of 3/28/'03 - vw of America has refused to cover this under warranty - a $3,775 repair!!!!! it is imperative that the NHTSA investigate this very serious defect and order a recall before someone is injured seriously or killed.

33 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 01/21/2003

The passenger side and side curtain airbags deployed while driving down the highway for no reason.

35 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 09/24/2002

Passenger side seat and curtain air bags deployed despite vehicle being in no incident or collision. Vehicle towed to dealer and problem advised. Neither dealer or vw prepared to consider or discuss possibility of such possibility occuraning. Both dealer and vw the manufacturers insist that vehicle was involved in major impact of 2g or above and that this should be handled by insurance company despite there being no evidence of impact or collision. Despite pleas to vw , they would not investigate possibility of air bag deployment without impact. Vehicle still immobile and unrepaired after almost 3 months. Vehicle since moved to another vw dealer . Dt.
