1 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/19/2019

While taking the kids to school, my traction control light and steering assist light came on followed by the check engine light and a loss of drive. After taking the vehicle to an official vw dealership they spent 2 days diagnosing the 6 pages of faults that came up and informed me that the abs module has failed and will require replacement.

2 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/31/2018

My vehicle was in motion slowing down to a red light when the abs, traction control, and break lights came on at the same time. I ran diagnostics and all 4 abs sensors failed. This leads me to believe there might be a problem with the grounding connection or the entire abs module is faulty. This is a huge safety concern because the car may think the tires are skidding on dry pavement, compute a false positive, and cause a serious accident. My car has been in the dealership for almost two weeks and I was provided no loaner car in the mean time. Attached you will find diagnostics reports when I went to the dealership and price repairs, vws own website results for recalls under my VIN number, vw actual specific recall policy, and the NHTSA results confirming there is an open recall for my specific VIN number. Vw action code is 45f2. Nhtsa recall number is 16v913.

3 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/21/2018

I researched my VIN when I purchased the vehicle and found an incomplete safety recall on the abs module. That recall number is 16v913. Before I could take the vehicle to the scheduled appointment the abs module failed. The Volkswagen dealer in tacoma, washington charged me a diagnostic fee because the module failed communication, in which they found the module did indeed fail, but they would not replace it because they claim it wasn't covered under the warranty or the recall. They submitted a secondary claim to vw of America to try to have them approve the claim which was also denied. I am reaching out to hopefully get help with getting my vehicle fixed and once again safe to drive. Attached will be a copy of the invoice from the dealer and their findings.

4 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/13/2017

While driving down a rural highway in clear conditions and light traffic,at about 45 mph, several lights came on the dash, and the tachometer started jumping up and down I had no acceleration, and was lucky to be in a place to get off the road. I don't recall if I touched the brakes or not just before this happened, as it is sometimes necessary when driving with other cars on the road, but there was no hard braking. I was just driving normally. If I touched them at all, it would have been lightly,. The car would start fine but no gears. Towed to dealership. Their report said "small metal shards about the size of a grain of sand" in the trans fluid, and "it appears the transmission commuter did not disengage the clutch in use as it engaged the clutch for the next gear and tried running the vehicle in two gears at the same time at cruising speed. , which in turn damaged the transmission internally and destroyed the dual clutch friction discs. " I recently found out that there is a recall for the abs module on my vehicle. Another driver (NHTSA id 10944646) indicated that when his abs module failed, that his vehicle randomly downshifts to first gear, and is unable to switch back. He said "what starts as a simple brake problem is now an undriveable car". Is this what happened to my car? could my abs module failure cause the transmission to downshift while travelling at 45 mph? should the transmission repair be included in the abs recall program? this was a very dangerous situation, and I had no warning before it happened. Also, it was very hot out, about 90 degrees, if temperature plays a role in this situation. I am making an appointment to have the abs issue repaired under the recall, but volkswagon is taking no responsibility for the transmission failure. They said it is out of warranty. I think they may be related, and customers need to know if this is a possibility.

5 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/01/2016

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Gti. While driving 35 mph, when the brake pedal was depressed, the check engine, abs, brake, electronic stability control, and epc indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the abs module needed to be replaced. The dealer estimated that the repair would cost $1,500-$2,000. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure recurred several other times. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 16v913000 (service brakes, hydraulic, electronic stability control). The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the manufacturer denied the recall repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer stated that since the abs module control failed to work, the recall repair could not be performed. The failure mileage was 96,000.

6 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/20/2016

The abs pump module fails on 2009 cars regularly. The abs, stability control and traction control no longer functions and Volkswagen refuses to do anything about it. Took my car to the dealer when it was under warranty for them to look at and all they could say was is that they could not duplicate the problem. Now it is out of warranty and the issue is constant to the point where I do not drive the car due to the speedometer and steering being affected by this issue. The car was on the highway and when the brakes were hard pressed the car skidded.

7 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/15/2016

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Gti. While driving 5 mph and turning the steering wheel, the power steering failed. Various warning indicators illuminated. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000.

8 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/01/2016

Abs module failure after 100k miles. Three chimes, "engine fault workshop" warning comes up, warning lights for abs, esp, steering, brakes, everything. Happens randomly, often on turns, goes back to normal after a while except for abs and check engine lights. Apparently this is a standard problem for this year/model.

9 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 06/01/2016

Abs control module failure developed after 100,000 miles.

10 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 04/27/2016

Beginning around 55k miles (car was approximately 6 years old) I occasionally would experience a chime followed by abs light flashing when taking tight turns. It turned off when cycling the engine off/on. Also, sometimes there would be three chimes upon starting the car followed by abs and esc warning lights flashing. This could not be removed by cycling the engine off/on. It would stay on while driving and only go away randomly the next time I restarted it later; sometimes it would stay on for many consecutive stops/starts. The symptom of the three chimes upon startup got more frequent recently (70k miles). It would appear almost every day. I researched this on web chat forums and the symptoms appeared to be consistent with other 2009 vw Gti drivers experiencing abs control module failure. I also consulted my local vw mechanic and he concurred my symptoms were 'early onset' failure and anecdotally he said the 2009 vw Gti control modules have a reputation of early failure. It is worth noting the condition renders the esc and abs non-functional. I took the car to the dealer at 73500 miles and he diagnosed abs control module failure and said it was dangerous to drive. I asked for a goodwill warranty extension and got it; the unit was replaced which appears to have fixed the issue. Luckily, I did not ever encounter a situation that tested the driveability of the car with those systems disabled.

11 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 04/20/2016

When driving the car, a lot of the warning lights flash out of nowhere. The abs light, traction, power steering, epc lights all flash. I also lose power steering. On top of that, the speedometer does not work. This happens abruptly and sometimes at high speeds. It is extremely dangerous. From what I've read, it is the abs module failing. This seems to be a common problem of 09 Gtis and needs to be recalled!.

12 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/02/2016

The abs modules are failing on 2009 Gti's and possibly more years. Abs, traction control, and esp lights up and stays on for the rest of the drive, and the car has no traction control or abs. Its incredibly dangerous because it happens while turning or braking, and halfway through the brakes lock up sending the car into a twirl.

13 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/04/2016

The bosch abs brake pump has failed. This causes the brakes to lose abs and traction control capability in the event of hard braking event. This issue re-sets with every ignition cycle and suddenly re-appears during the braking event. This has happened to me three times, 1st time was complete surprised and spun 360 degrees in the road, luckily no one was around. Vw diagnosed issue, $2500, refused to pay or acknowledge this is an issue, despite many complaints. In the past two months, I have slid across two lanes of traffic over a curb thru a business front yard, luckily no damage to me or vehicle. Next I slid again, when the brakes failed and hit a curb, $1500 damage to my car. Vw again has refused to pay for the brake pump failure. There are many complaints on Gti blogs, vw cares twitter account. In some cases vw has paid for have consumer vehicle fixed, but in my case they denied twice. Once before and once after I had an accident. My vw case manager said my claim was denied, no real reason. I live in michigan, so our winters are long and snow filled, I fear everytime I get on the road in could be my last. I won't let my family drive this car. I don't want me or some else to die because of this issue. During the event, the brakes completely lock up, leaving the driver with no control in what must be an situation if you were braking hard to begin with. I find this issue to much much worse than their diesel rigging scheme. This failure will actually kill people. Vw has also had bosch improve or fix this issue on later Gti models. I can't understand why an issue like this is not recalled. One lost life is too many.

14 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/12/2015

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Gti. When the brake pedal was depressed at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated to respond and the instrument panel warning indicators flickered on and off. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that an unknown steering mechanism failed and the steering module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the abs control module failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 16v913000 (service brakes, hydraulic, electronic stability control). The failure mileage was 95,120.

15 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/02/2015

2009 Volkswagen Gti abs control module failure. This appears to be a common problem. Driving down the highway and complete system failure occurred. Numerous dash board annunciator lights and loss of speedometer.

16 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/26/2015

When braking hard today (it was raining and I got cut off by a distracted driver) my car went into a (barely) controlled skid. Abs, esp. Steering wheel lights all flashing with three beeps. The lights went away when I turned the car off/on. My wife is 7 months pregnant, and was with me in the car. I'm not impressed with what I'm reading online regarding the sheer volume of others experiencing complete abs failure. Someone is going to get killed if vw doesn't recall the malfunctioning control module. I've booked my car in for service next week. I truly hope vw steps up and finally accepts responsibility for this life-saving repair. Ps I'm in british columbia, canada (victoria).

17 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 05/27/2015

Driving on highway 34 from greeley CO towards loveland CO at speed limit of 65. I applied the breaks to adjust my speed for traffic, as I applied the breaks the abs control module failed causing wheels to lock up causing the loss of control of the car. After a moment I was in a ditch with bent wheels and body damage to my Gti from the speed limit and mile markers signed I stuck. Most likely these two post were probably what kept the car from rolling and killing me. Police and insurance have been informed of the crash.

18 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 05/22/2015

The abs module failure has been reported many times online. The module will fail causing abs, traction control, power steering, and engine lights to all come on. Much of the dashboard is lit now. The car reads "engine fault workshop" and the speedometer will drop to 0 mph. The fuel gauge will change from empty to 3/4 to 1/2 while driving. Audible beeps are heard from dash.

19 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/16/2015

As I am driving or accelerating, not braking or otherwise slowing down, I get a warning beep and then the abs light comes on and the 'brake' light on the dashboard starts flashing. This has happened twice in the past 3 months. The lights go off when the car is shut down and restarted. When I reported the second incident to the dealer, they reported that the abs module is failing and that lack of repair could cause the brakes to lock or otherwise fail in the case of a sharp or severe stop. After doing research online, I have found that this issue is endemic among 2009 vws, particularly Gtis and there are known instances of crashes as a result of brake failure. Vw has not issued a recall for this part (made by bosch) and they have in some cases replaced the part at no cost to the owner, but there is a lack of communication/admission from the manufacturer that the issue even exists! I have a filed a complaint online with vw directly and hope that there is some movement in this case--that it will be covered and that there will be some public mention of this problem.

20 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/09/2014

The vw dealer has diagnosed the problem as a failure of the abs control module. While driving a car with a failed control module, there a no symptoms, but if you hit the brakes hard enough to trigger the abs system, the abs system doesn't work. The tires lock, and the car slides. Thereafter, several warning lights come on, but power cycling the car turns the lights off, giving the impression that the problem has resolved. I wasn't involved in an accident, but the risk of someone being is a serious accident because of an abs failure is high. You would only find out the part had failed after you needed it.

21 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/31/2014

Turning right from a stop. Car's abs failed at approximately 5 mph and continued to stay off until the engine was turned off and restarted. The abs light disappeared until next turn at approximately 10 mph when abs failed again. Issue has persisted in any type of inclement weather over the past 10 months.

22 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/01/2013

Abs control module fails, causing esp and abs system to be disabled until ignition is restarted. Happened over a dozen times during the winter. Fault is noticeable by blinking lights that do not turn off until ignition is restarted. I would usually do this while rolling on the highway, which is not difficult with a manual. Dealer fixed this saying it was a wiring issue by cleaning the module and re-attaching it in the spring for free. The issue started again in may, and the dealer did not acknowledge that the abs sensor faults were related. I started to get the winter blinking light faults again. I paid out of pocket $600 for the part, and about $500 for labor to get the revised module installed, which I saw was the proper fix other dealers were doing for people still under warranty.
