Volkswagen GTI owners have reported 29 problems related to brake light on (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Brake Light On problem of the 2013 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/18/2018

The vehicle was on a highway and started beeping with warning light that said "brakes service now" and both brake and abs lights were on. I took it to shoulder to check. The car had only 33000 miles on it. The brakes seemed to be okay though. Took it to the dealer who upon inspection said the abs control unit is faulty and needs replacing. He quoted 3300 for the repair. Upon checking, he said the it failed not because of any user error, and the control unit should last a long time. Looks like there were recalls for vw car from 2008-2009 for a similar issue.

3 Brake Light On problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/17/2017

After driving home from the gas station after replacing my tires going about 50mph. My brake fluid light came on and the brakes did not work at all. Lucky I was able to down shift and e brake on the city street. I took it to the firestone mechanic. Thinking the hit a line or cut a line on accident. After inspection nothing was cut or broken. After opening the hood it reviled no brake fluid at all. After removing parts it was then discovered that the master cylinder was leaking in the firewall. After going online to the forums I noticed other people are having this problem. The dealership for Volkswagen are trying to blame them. . But they didn't even open the hood. I had other work done by them with no problems ever. I will have documentation as my car is being worked on. I could of died if I didn't think fast or if I waited till the last min to brake.

4 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/08/2017

When I brake sometimes the brakes lock up, abs light comes on, traction control and brake light come on. The lights stay on until I shut off car and restart. Has happened at slow and fast speeds.

5 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/04/2017

Abs and stability control lights on permanently. Brake light blinks always. Steering wheel, epc and check engine like all come out intermittently. When steering wheel light is on steering is stiff at low speeds. Speedometer only works intermittently. Engine fault workshop and please refuel come up randomly on the info screen even when gas is full. When speedometer is not working, automatic dsg transmission will randomly downshift gears making car quickly and dangerously decelerate. Has almost caused accidents while driving on wet or snowy roads. Car has also locked doors while in park when speedometer not working, locking me out of the car. Girlfriend also witnessed it happen while waiting in idling car.

6 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/02/2017

Vehicle has failed abs module, as diagnosed by mechanic. Abs light is on and brake light flashes, as to be expected. While in motion, on either city street or freeway, vehicle randomly downshifts to first gear and is unable to switch back. Only way to get car working again is to turn car off and on, a dangerous proposition when you're on the freeway. In addition, power steering goes out and engine fault workshop! comes on after a few minutes in motion. Speedometer also randomly stops working while tachometer goes out of control. What begins as a simple brake problem is now an undriveable car. Have had to push car to side of the road several times because of this. Completely unsafe conditions to drive in.

7 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 10/17/2016

2009 75,000 miles. Abs controll module failure for the past couple of weeks my car would intermittently throw up the abs and traction lights but this would go away shortly afterwards. I get in my car about 30 minutes and start driving for maybe 1/16th of a mile and everything just freaks out. Speedometer is dropping to zero (while in motion doing about 15 mph) and fluctuates all over between 0 and 20 mph. Brake light is on. Traction light is on. Abs light is on. Steering light is on. Epc light is on. Check engine light is on. And the mfd is saying "engine fault workshop". As time has gone on it now tends to happen atleast 15+ times a day.

8 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/09/2016

While driving the vehicle steering system became tight, abs and brake light came on as well as check engine, steering system malfunction, epc and stability control lights lit up on dash. Also, fuel gauge would drop to empty and speedometer went to zero miles per hour while the car was in motion. This happened on a city street going straight or turning.

9 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/12/2016

Was traveling on the interstate around a curve during rush hour traffic and had to apply the brakes pretty hard on that curve. The abs activated very shortly and then was followed by the abs light and traction and brake light coming on with an audible chime and the tires then locked up, which then caused the car to start to spin sideways. Luckily was able to correct it before disaster. This has happened on many occasions, basically whenever the abs is engaged, the system is disabled right in the middle of needing it, very dangerous. I do not have the $1,000+ to fix this problem.

10 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

Vw 2009 Gti 80k miles. Solid abs, solid power steering light, solid check engine light, solid traction control, and flashing "brake" lights illuminate on the dashboard occasionally upon turning on the vehicle, accompanied by 3 audible beeps. Then, the abs, traction control, brake, epc, steering, and check engine lights began to come on while driving. Abs and traction control stay illuminated, while the epc, steering, check engine, and brake lights come on intermittently, accompanied by 3 audible beeps. The message "engine fault - workshop!" also shows up on the message display center in the dash. Steering feels a bit stiff. Speedometer, odometer and fuel gauge affected. Dealer has indicated an internal fault in the abs control module requiring complete replacement. Vw corporate offices unwilling to provide extended warranty on these common failures. Expensive fix and very dangerous to drive.

11 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 05/23/2016

I have a 2009 Volkswagen Gti and my abs lights are on as well as engine workshop fault, three beeps, check engine, epc and traction control and brake light. This is a common problem with the make and model and year of vehicle. This should be recalled upon ASAP. This is a serious safety issue.

12 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/28/2016

My abs pump & module were determined to need replacement. Searching online, it seems a large number of people with the 2009 model are having this issue. I was quoted at $2200 to fix it. I was driving on a city street to a restaurant after my wedding and the abs, traction control and brake lights all came on. Days later the car started to rev weird and the speedometer would not work.

13 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/23/2016

For several weeks, solid abs, solid traction control, and flashing "brake" lights would illuminate on the dashboard occasionally upon turning on the vehicle, accompanied by 3 audible beeps. In addition, while the car is in motion, the speedometer will repeatedly alternate between the actual speed reading and a reading of 0 mph. When the speedometer drops to 0 mph, the engine rpms increase. Finally, the car sputters and bucks when attempting to accelerate rapidly, and steering feels a bit stiff. The dealer has indicated an internal fault in the abs control module.

14 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/21/2016

I was driving on the freeway when I had to make a sudden stop. My brakes locked up and my abs, brake, and esc lights came on. I tried to regain control but ended up spinning out on the freeway and hitting the guard rail. Had to fix taillight and bumper is scratched. This problem is extremely dangerous because when I was braking I was braking under the impression that my abs system was working correctly and I did not pump the brakes. I was only notified that my abs, esc, and brake were having issues after I was in the panic brake and it was too late to react and start pumping the brakes. The abs, esc, and brake lights turn off after the car is restarted but the problem is still there. I have tried braking hard on wet pavement afterwards to test the issue and the abs, esc, and brake lights turn on again when the abs is supposed to engage. I restart the car and there is no warning that the abs system is having trouble. I began searching for the issue recently and found on a couple forums that many people have been having the same issue. I believe the issue is with the abs control module. This is extremely dangerous and Volkswagen needs to recall ASAP.

15 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/16/2015

Abs light comes on while driving, along with e brake light, traction control light. Dealer says it's the abs module. Car has 33,400 miles. Abs light will go off after restarting but will keep going into the fault code out of the blue while driving. Car will skid if excessive braking is needed. Dangerous for owner and other people. Abs module should be recalled but again with vw current situation with diesels it's no wonder they won't backup a defective abs module.

16 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/01/2015

Faulty abs control module. Abs and traction control lights go solid, brake light blinks, whenever abs kicks in (happens anytime it snows). Then the abs will not work again until the car is shut off and turned on again. Vw you need to fix this, or people will die in accidents because of no abs!! my car only has 40,500 miles.

17 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/09/2015

I bought this Gti used from a fabulous vw dealer with 55,000 miles on it. I've owned the vehicle roughly six or seven months and under hard braking, sharp turns/maneuvers or quick acceleration I would randomly get the abs, traction control and flashing e-brake light illuminated in my gauge cluster. These warning lights would stay on until the ignition was switched off and when the car was restarted would go away. While driving home from work yesterday, now with 62,000 miles, I applied the brakes while going 45-50 miles an hour. The car that was a good 6 car lengths in front of me had slammed on their brakes so I had ample room to come to a stop. After applying the brakes all of my wheels locked up and my car began to spin out of control off the road. After spinning twice my car came to rest on the shoulder facing the opposite direction. The car came to rest not more than a foot from a 30 or 40 foot steep unguarded grade. Had the car gone any further I might have been severely injured, or worse, killed. The same lights were illuminated on the gauge cluster. After gathering my nerve and driving home I parked the car in my drive way. Turned it off and turned it back on. Again, all the warning lights were gone. I did some online research and found numerous accounts of this issue indicative of the 2009 model year vw's but no recall has been issued. Vw customer service stated that they would not cover any costs which I reject as I feel that I should not have to pay the hefty fee of replacing and recoding the abs module as it shouldn't have failed to begin with.

18 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/09/2015

Purchased this car brand new from the dealership. Because I lived in the d. C. Area, I didn't drive it much, so the car today has about 34k miles. A week ago, I was driving on the highway about 65 mph when the brake light and abs came on, along with the three warning dings. Took it to the vw dealership on austin, who diagnosed as abs brake module failure. I found a vw repair shop who would change out the module for $400 less, and I drove it home. Strangely, the lights are off. Based on everything we've found online, this is a serious safety issue for this car. First, the lights should not be shutting off as if the problem has disappeared. Second, a car with this few miles should not have the abs system failing. Vw needs to issue an immediate recall to replace all of these 2009 Gti abs modules before someone is killed.

19 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/16/2015

Abs control module fault. Several times my brake light warning has come on, suddenly, and have lost abs function and lost braking power while driving. Very scary on highway. Vw shop found 7 different fault codes and could not gain response or contact with the control module. It is essentially dead now whenever I turn on car. I have read dozens of complaints online about similar problems with other 2009 vws. Since this has happened after my extended 60,000 mile warranty (68,000miles now) vw will not cover issue despite it being endemic. Please investigate, this is dangerous and needs to be covered by the company and recalled to keep people safe.

20 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/03/2015

Abs, traction control and brake light come on all together. The abs module is failing. This appears to be a rampant problem with many 2009 Gti's. The bad module also makes power steering go out, as well as the fuel gauge and speedometer not work.

21 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/18/2014

When braking in slippery conditions, the abs light, brake light, and traction control lights come on and the abs ceases to function, allowing the brakes to lock up and the car to slide. The lights reset when the car is turned off and on but the failure happens every time abs should be engaged. Effectively, the abs does not work.

22 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/04/2014

I was traveling east in the right lane on interstate 44 at approximately 0645 in the am. It was normal heavy morning work traffic going into oklahoma city, traveling the posted speed of 70 mph. I was following a full size pickup truck and moderte traffic was passing me on my left. Without notice, traffic suddendly slowed to approximatelty 40 mph, causing me to hit my brakes hard. The abs system engaged and my car was thrown sideways off the road at approximately 70 mph. I pulled the car back left, causing vehicles in the left lane to swerve to miss hitting me. The abs and brake light illuminated on my car, indicating a failure however, a dummy could figure out the brakes were not working. There is no doubt in my mind, had my car been thown left when I hit the brakes I would have been smeared by on coming traffic, likely a fatality. I immediately took my car to Volkswagen and was told I needed a pump/abs module; a 2500 repair. Understand when I shut the car off and turned it back on, the abs/brake fault lights clear. I had no indication my abs system was malfunctiong unti li needed brakes. And bam!. After reading forums, its apparent this is an on going problem with 2009 Gtis and it should be an immediate safety concern of Volkswagen. Someone is going to get killed. I've asked for my old parts so I will have them when there are court proceedings against Volkswagen for the injury or death of someone as a result of a failed abs system. This really does need investigating. Thank you.

23 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 10/19/2014

Instrument panel displays check engine light, steering light, abs light, traction control light, brake light, tire pressure light. Abs no longer works in a hard brake situation, wheels lock and car will skid. Engine also refuses to rev past around 3900 rpm unless manually upshift to a higher gear. Steering assist no longer works.

24 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/13/2014

When I started the vehicle after it had sat for a week without starting, warning lights appeared for abs, traction control, and brakes. I drove it around the block to test things out, and things seemed to be running pretty much like normal, so I drove it to a mechanic. They ran a diagnostic, and 8 codes came up, all having to do with the abs system. It was determined that the abs control module would need to be replaced. I didn't want to do the repairs at that mechanic, so they told me I could drive the car, but that I wouldn't have abs or traction control. Upon driving it a few miles, the lights turned off, and everything was functioning as normal. When I started it the next day, the lights were back on, but I decided to drive it to work, based on what the mechanic had told me. About a mile down the road, the speedometer stopped working, and the car then began to change gears at random, which presented an all new safety risk. At this point I also lost power steering. I managed to pull over and turn off the car. When I started the car again, just the brake warning lights were on, so I decided to drive home, considering I was only about a mile away. Everything was functioning properly on that drive. My complaint mostly has to do with the abs control module, as it appears that this is a relatively common issue for this model year, and it definitely puts people at risk, especially if it is affecting other systems, as well.

25 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/02/2014

Abs , traction light, and brake light went on during driving. Many 2009 Volkswagen Gtis have the same problem. Its known an koabs module and pump defective.

26 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 05/07/2014

The vehicle severely wondered under hard braking without any alarm being triggered before the incident. Only after the incident, abs and red brake light went on. As a result of the incident, the abs control module and pump were replaced. The abs system does not appear to be designed as a fail-safe system which does not seem good engineering practice.

27 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 04/19/2014

Brake light (flashing), abs and esp light on. Loss of traction control/abs functionality. Posibility of a crash in an emergency braking event. As per owners (online forums) it happens to 2009 Gti owners. Abs control module/pump issue. Happens to 2009 Gti owners with various milleages.

28 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 10/05/2013

I was driving around a turn at roughly 60mph on a highway off-ramp during dry conditions when the dashboard chimed and several warning lights illuminated. Both the esp and abs lights lit and remained lit continuously, and the brake light began to blink continuously. The car still drove normally, so I continued to drive another five minutes to my home. Upon turning off the ignition completely and restarting the car, all three indicator lights were cleared. This same incident occurred on numerous occasions over the following months, during snowy/icy conditions. On any slippery road surface during heavy braking, the three indicator lights would illuminate and the dash would chime. This fault was always cleared by simply restarting the vehicle. However, the abs system never functioned properly; the brakes would simply lock up when this fault occurred. I brought the vehicle to a dealer to have a proper diagnoses completed, at which point it was determined that the abs module was faulty and needed to be replaced. The repair cost was estimated at $1700. 00. I contacted vw's corporate north american office several times through phone call and mail, and I was denied coverage or payment assistance, as the vehicle was beyond the bumper-to-bumper warranty. I decided not to worry about the problem until this winter, but last week I had the fault occur again when driving at about 55mph on a wet roadway and hitting my brakes hard to avoid a deer that ran across the road. I was fortunate to miss the deer, but the brakes locked up and the rear-end of the vehicle began to slide around before I let off the brakes. I had another dealer diagnose the issue again, and this time they discovered that the abs pump and module were both faulty. I just had the repair performed at a cost of about $2,450. 00. I feel this is a serious safety issue that should warrant a recall.

29 Brake Light On problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/09/2013

I was driving on the canyon and went into a turn at 40mph. I heard a beep and my abs, brake and traction control lights all went on at once. The lights stayed on but the parking brake light flashed. The car felt weird while driving and I was afraid to keep driving so I pulled over and turned the car off. After checking the codes through my vagcom cable I had a 01130 - abs operation code. The lights went away after I turned the car off and on but this same issue kept happening throughout the canyon until I arrived at my destination. I stopped pulling over and just drove with the lights carefully all the way home. The abs seems to be turned off as this malfunction occurs. This is dangerous especially on wet roads and on canyons. I tried contacting vw of America and they said they do not cover this problem. They wanted $2000+ for the replacement of the abs control module. I think this is not fair and should be a recall. This issue is known for all 2009 vw Gti's. Many 2009 Gti's have faulty abs units. I hope this will be looked into and hopefully vwoa will start a recall campaign. Thank you for reading.
