1 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 06/28/2025

Manual transmission car. Hill hold brake assist feature is dangerous and can be fixed with software update. This is truly dangerous. When stopped on an incline, the brakes automatically engage when stopped and hold the car from rolling backwards which might occur if the driver did not know how to drive a manual transmission car. When driver takes foot off of brake pedal, the brake fails to release !! it hold for 2-3 additional seconds before it will allow the car to move, causing car to stall when engaging the clutch into gear. 50 years experience driving manual transmission cars - this defect is diabolical and patently unsafe. My last vw had a hill hold feature which released in concert with engaging clutch, so no stalls. This is fixable with software update! please force vw to fix their dangerously defective car. This occurs all of the time and is not an isolated incident to my car - it is a design defect wreaking havoc with all Gti manual transmission owners of the mark viii iteration. It is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.

2 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 05/04/2025

The automatic “hill assist” is dangerous in that it makes it easy to stall your car when trying to use your manual transmission. It’s unintuitive and truly frustrating and can cause you to stall your car when you are pulling into traffic. The previous implementation of this on the mk7 vw Gti’s worked well but vw made this way too intrusive and complicated - and dangerous - on the mk8 vw Gti’s. There is no option to disabled it or change the behavior.

3 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/28/2025

During moderate braking, the abs system was violently pulsing the brakes on the left front wheel. This occured on about one dozen braking events over a 5-7 mile distance. Afterwards upon inspection, the left front brake smelled and radiated intense amounts of heat. There were no warning lights displayed at any time during or after. The tires, original equipment size, are almost brand new. All tires were at recommended air pressure. A Volkswagen dealer will inspect the vehicle today. The abs hydraulic assembly is suspect. The vehicle has 46,000 miles and has had its brake fluid replaced in the past as part of normal recommended service.

4 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/18/2025

The 8th generation of the vw golf (and 7th generation jetta) has a dangerous hill start assist for manual transmission cars that cannot be disabled. When stopped on an incline, the car holds the brakes after the driver removes their foot from the pedal for a variable amount of time (upwards of 2 seconds), which was originally designed to help start on steep inclines. This is dangerous for a number of reasons. The first is that it's impossible to gauge when the car will release the brakes, so it will always roll backwards. The reaction of the driver to rolling backwards, instead of timing the movement from brakes to accelerator is much more difficult and often causes more delays due to stalling. The second is that the driver has no visibility to a sensor or light for this mechanism, making it very unpredictable. Lastly, drivers behind the vehicle see the brake lights go off when the driver lifts their foot, but the car is unable to move for multiple seconds, which causes more risk of injury, accident, and overall traffic.

5 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/10/2025

The hill assist feature causes the vehicle to stall due to long hold times. It's caused me to back up traffic numerous times and has almost caused people behind me to rear end me.

6 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/05/2024

The hill hold assist on the mk8 vw Gti is overly aggressive, creating safety concerns. When starting on a hill, there is a 2-3 second delay where the car strongly holds the brakes, even after the brake light disengages. This could lead to rear-end collisions as following drivers might assume the car is moving. Additionally, in emergency situations, this delay prevents immediate forward movement, increasing risk. For manual transmission models, it also raises the likelihood of stalling, which can further compromise safety. This feature should be less aggressive, should not engage the brakes without the brake lights illuminated, and there should be an option to disable it entirely.

7 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/01/2024

Roll back feature on manual car. Causes disruptive driving by engaging and holding too long causing stallouts and potential collisions. Also rearbackup camera only works <80% of time.

8 Service Brakes problem of the 2022 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/19/2024

This is in regard the hill hold assist on the manual transmission vehicles. The hill hold assist holds the brake for 2-3 seconds after the brake has been released, causing a delay in movement which if trying to make a quick maneuver, could cause a delay in start which could cause an accident if the driver was not prepared for it. Personally, it caused me to stall the vehicle on a hill, stopping the flow of traffic for a further 3-5 seconds as I started the vehicle back up. This seems to be a common problem in 2022-2024 model manual Gti’s and golf r’s reported on many vw and reddit forums that nobody seems to have a solution for, and vw has not acknowledged or addressed the issue.

9 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 07/01/2024

I am experiencing the same problem reported in NHTSA id number: 11587076. I am writing to let you know that this problem is not limited to the golf r model but also affects the golf Gti models with manual transmission. The description of the problem in report 11587076 matches my experience exactly so I will not repeat it here. An additional problem possibly related to this one is that there is no brake boost when the engine is not running. With all other cars I have owned, there has been some residual boost from the brake servo that is available to stop the car from rolling between the time when the clutch pedal is depressed and when the engine is started. In the same situation with this car, extreme pressure on the brake pedal or application of the parking brake is needed to stop the rolling. In my opinion, this constitutes a safety hazard.

10 Service Brakes problem of the 2012 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 04/06/2024

Abs control module short and failure occurred. Trouble codes generated include 01325 - tire pressure monitoring control module no signal/communication and 01130 - abs operation implausible signal static. Upon visiting an authorized Volkswagen dealer service center was charged $200 for abs diagnostic fee and told the abs control module has failed and I will need to pay >$2900 to replace. Abs, esp/asr, airbag, and parking brake lights are now permanently active as a result and not certain these systems are functioning.

11 Service Brakes problem of the 2010 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/07/2024

Under emergency braking at around 70mph all 4 wheels locked up and abs/traction lights illuminated on dash. Caused a minor accident and flat spot on all 4 tires. Abs did not work. This is a know recall for 2009 models of the same vehicle. I replicated the issue a second time at a slower speed on a secluded road with the same results. There are numerous complaints about the same situation on this and other model vw cars of this year all over the internet forums. The abs module was diagnosed as defective by mechanic shop.

12 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/25/2022

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Gti. The contact stated while driving at 35-40 mph, the abs warning light, the traction control warning light and the brake warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to to the dealer to be repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 16v913000 (service brakes, hydraulic, electronic stability control). Upon reprogramming the abs module, the dealer informed the contact the abs module failed the diagnostic test and it needed to be replaced. However, the dealer informed the contact that he would need to pay a repair fee though the recall remedy stated the abs module replacement was free of charge. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 17,000.

13 Service Brakes problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 05/27/2022

The emergency parking hand brake won't engage until after around an average of 5 attempts. The hand brake button and spring behind it is also loose and pops off. I'm unable to drive with it on, or else it can pop off and fall to the floor. This causes issues as now I'm unable to use the emergency hand brake in an event of an emergency, which is what the purpose of the emergency hand brake is for.

14 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 04/18/2022

I recently purchased this used car and discovered that there is a recall on it. I made an appointment for the recall service. Prior to the appointment, the abs warning light came on while driving the car. I took the car to university Volkswagen. They charged me for a diagnostic on the abs system and have advised that the abs module needs to be replaced and that I must have that done, before they can address the recall. I asked the service advisor if the issues with the abs system were due to the recall issue, and he told me it was difficult to say. I escalated the issue, and they still tell me that I have to pay $3000 to replace the abs module before they can do the recall work. It seems that if the abs failure is due to the recall, that it should not be up to me to pay for the abs module so that they can test the abs module. Can you please help me with this situation, or advise me what steps to take next?.

15 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/01/2021

Abs module has been known to be defective on this model year Volkswagen Gti. Some vins are not covered under a recall even though it uses the same abs system and abs module that has been known to be defective. All vins that use this abs module should be covered under this recall as this is a safety hazard.

16 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 05/08/2020

My car was affected by the 2017 recall for the abs module. I was driving around a corner and hit brakes to slow a little, the abs/traction control/steering light(s) came on and my brakes locked momentarily cause me to slide. I called local dealer to have the recall performed. The dealer stated(and vw America) that because they were unable to pull codes from the module I would need to pay to replace it myself and then they could perform the recall. This is complete and utter stupidity. The module was recalled due to failures. They should cover the complete cost to replace and recode. I was quoted 2100. 00 my car only has 88,000 miles and well taken care of.

17 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 04/15/2020

Vehicle has a recall for the abs module, I took the car into the vw of murietta California dealer to get the recall taken care of on 1/11/20 and they claimed that they assumed that the module had already been done and they claimed to have contacted vw of America to clear the recall in the system. Then on 4/10/20 I took the vehicle to the same dealer for an unrelated issue and mentioned the still active recall, they then proceeded to tell me that the module was unable to be updated and that I would have to pay an estimate of $1800 to fix the recall. On 4/16/20 I called vw of America to which their response was that vw of murrieta did not have an open claim with them about my vehicle.

18 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/04/2020

Tl-the contact owns a 2018 Volkswagen Gti. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph, the emergency brake activated independently. The contact mentioned there was a warning on the dashboard stating an object was in front of the vehicle however, there was nothing in front of the vehicle. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate millage was 14,426. Ak.

19 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/03/2020

On 3 occasions the manual parking brake has release fully when the car has been parked uphill on a side street with a steep incline. Twice this was after I had gotten out of the car, and once while in the car it happened immediately after the hill-holder brake released. Each time, the car was in gear and did not roll more than a few inches; and an adult passenger was in the front and witnessed it and reapplied the brake. The parking brake was applied tightly, and fully released with a big noise 2-20 seconds later. The from the sound made, it seems that the ratcheting pawl on the handbrake slipped out and did not catch on the next tooth. The dealership could not recreate the issue and has not made adjustments. The most recent failure was a few weeks after my most recent service.

20 Service Brakes problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/14/2020

Error. Service vehicle. Only leave vehicle in p position.

21 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/01/2019

A number of warning lights come on when the car is turned on and sound alarms come on and off while driving. The steering wheel moves on its own at times and the speedometer does not work. I took the car to my local vw dealer located in countryside IL (autobarn) knowing that there is a recall on the abs system. The dealer explained that the abs module was not working and needed replacement ($2,400) parts and labor and that the recall did not cover what is wrong with the part.

22 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/16/2019

Abs code 16352 present. Car lost consistent electronic steering assistance making for varying steering wheel resistance during turning. Most dash information (speed, fuel gauge, etc. ) fluctuated. This issue needs to be addressed for all vw vehicles with abs control module issues, not just some. I brought this to the attention of vw and was told that the specific fault I threw was not covered (under existing recalls) even though all abs control module issues result in eventual failure of dash cluster as well as obvious safety concerns (which is exactly what happened resulting in ongoing costly shop visits).

23 Service Brakes problem of the 2012 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/26/2019

While car was stopped but running the vacuum pump 'broke' with a loud grinding sound and oil started leaking everywhere. Putting the car in motion wasn't a problem dispite the grinding sound but brakes were *very* hard to press and was *very* difficult to stop the car. Decided that it was unsafe to drive and called a tow truck to take to the dealer. They replaced the vacuum pump at my expense.

24 Service Brakes problem of the 2010 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/04/2018

Traveling at 45 mph down a two way highway, I went to pass a slow moving vehicle when the epc turned on once again. I lost power and tried to return back into my lane the vehicle in front spiked on the brakes, I tried stopping but due to the abs module going bad (vw knows about the problems with them) I had no abs, traction control, or airbags. The brakes locked causing me to go off the road way hitting a berm along with a tree causing my vehicle to flip over onto the roof. Upon impact the airbag system did not activate causing minor injuries. I contacted the Volkswagen manufacture to inform them of the problems with the vehicle some time ago, they told me that there was not recall and that they were not going to do anything about the problems. There has been a service bulletin about the epc with a recommend fix. The six gold pins were put in to replace the original ones which worked for some time but failed again. Thankfully I did not have my two very small children with me.

25 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 06/08/2018

Without warning, the abs module in the car failed, giving warning lights on the dash and making the car undriveable. Recall work was pursued with the a vw dealer and Volkswagen of America, but the recall work was denied, saying this failure was outside the scope of the recall. Car has not been repaired.

26 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 06/01/2018

I have/ had a 2018 Volkswagen golf Gti. At the time of the collision my car had just barely north of 7000 miles on it. I was driving down the road at night and I saw deer about 30-50 yards away. I was going 25-30mph, as soon as I saw the deer I applied the brakes but the pedal felt spongy and the vehicle failed to stop resulting in a collision.

27 Service Brakes problem of the 2012 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/27/2018

Cruise control & disengaging from the cruise control by applying the brake pedal. On Tuesday, March 27th, 2018 I was driving south on I-15 coming from mesquite, nevada and headed back into the las vegas valley. As I passed the exit to take the great basin highway west towards the town of pioche, nevada there was a long semi truck in the #2 lane and I was in the #1 lane on this two lane highway. The semi truck made a lane change into my lane because he wanted to get around the vehicle in front of him, after the truck came into my lane I had to adjust my speed. At that moment, I had my cruise control on doing 77 mph, I applied my brake pedal to decrease my following distance now that the truck was in front of me. As I applied the brake pedal, the vehicle wasn't braking and started to go faster towards the bottom bumper of the truck. I couldn't stop my vehicle or make it slow down and eventually ended up running into the back bumper of the truck. Debris from the impact started flying all over the roadway and then my engine hood flew backwards and into my front windshield. I then tried to safely pull my vehicle over to the right and onto the shoulder . The engine hood came back further and was resting against the front windshield where my vision was totally blocked. Prior to that I saw the driver of the semi moving onto the right shoulder, but when the engine hood was firmly against the windshield I just stopped rolling forward for the fear of running into the back of the truck again because I couldn't see if and where exactly he stopped. Immediately after I came to a full stop, I had my passenger make a call to the nevada highway patrol and give our location and the details of what occurred. Luckily we were safe and alive, although a bit shaken.

28 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/08/2017

My vehicle has experienced exactly what NHTSA campaign # 16v913000 and it is the model and year as listed in the campaign. With ignition on and while driving all of a sudden 4-5-possibly 6 lights come on my dashboard a chime starts dinging and the abs, esc, airbag, epc, barke pedal lights illuminate on dash along with either the speedo or tachometer start jumping. Vehicle can be stationary or driving but vehicle must be running.

29 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/20/2017

While driving lights flashing, speedometer stops working ,fuel gauge stops working. Steering wheel moves funny. There is a recall on the program that they installed but now they just say that the unit needs to be replaced. They are asking 2400. 00 for the repair but there are many complaints on the internet from many owners.

30 Service Brakes problem of the 2017 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/24/2017

There is a piece of rubber protruding from the bottom of the brake pedal. It became entangled on the lace of my right shoe, and I was unable to use my right foot to brake (the foot was trapped under the brake pedal). I was eventually able to brake using my left foot. The vehicle was in motion at the time, on I-95. Traffic was rapidly slowing down at the time. I almost rear-ended the vehicle in front of me.

31 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 06/01/2017

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Gti. While driving unknown speeds, the brake pedal was applied, but failed to respond. Additionally, the brake pedal warning indicator was flashing. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 65,663.

32 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 05/17/2017

I have just started to encounter problems with my abs module. I received a recall on the module and took it in to an authorized Volkswagen dealer ASAP. Left the car with them for a day in hope to receive news that they were going to order my module and have it completed in a few days. I was wrong. They called me and claimed that it was not going to be covered in the recall. I don't understand how something so critical to the safety of everyone on the road will not be replaced, even when there is a recall on the part. My car absolutely freaks out while driving. I lose my speedometer, my steering is not as responsive as it should be and my dash cluster freaks out. I'm personally scared to drive my own car because I do not want to kill or injure other people or myself while driving the car I need to get around to work, and run daily errands. I scanned my check engine light with multiple people and systems and received a code u0121 which read connection failure in abs module and was told the module most likely does not have ground. This has happened to so many 09 vw vehicles, yet I've read so many forums and have talked to so many other 09 vw owners who said their cars "did not qualify" for this recall as well. The dealer quoted me 1,300 to fix this issue. I'm lost at words on how I have a recall on an obvious problem which is a manufacture error and I have to pay 1,300 to replace it or good luck with whatever accident you many get in. This has happened on freeways, city streets, and the scariest part is coming down the mountain which I have to drive 5 days out of the week for work. This a problem with these cars and only a few are being taken care of while the rest have to pay or goodluck.

33 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 05/05/2017

(ec missing dealer) tl the contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Gti. While starting the vehicle, the abs indicator illuminated. Also, while making a turn at various speeds, the instrument panel and the fuel gauge randomly failed. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed that the abs module needed to be updated. The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign number: 16v913000 (service brakes, hydraulic, electronic stability control). The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the codes did not match the faults listed in the recall. The contact was denied the recall repair. The failure mileage was approximately 81,600.

34 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/18/2017

16v913. The manufacture has failed to cover the cost of replacing the abs module. The reason given was that although my VIN is covered, the abs module part number is not on the list of parts that are covered. My car has experienced all the symptoms of recall number 16v913 and the software update did not fix the issue.

35 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/13/2017

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Gti. While driving various speeds, the antilock brake system (abs) and electronic stability control (esc) warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the abs module malfunctioned and needed replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure continued intermittently until the warning indicators remained illuminated at all times. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 16v913000 (service brakes, hydraulic, esc). The vehicle was then taken to gunther Volkswagen of fort lauderdale (1660 s state rd 7, fort lauderdale, FL 33317, (954) 797-1660) where it was confirmed that the abs module needed replacement. The vehicle was not serviced per the recall because insufficient pcu ground connection was not detected. The manufacturer stated that the module could not be included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
