4 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/07/2016

My wife must sit on an extra seat cushion in the front passenger seat. But when she does the air bags deactivate. So air bags won't deploy around her seat. Dealer says there is no way to switch the air bags on. This is very dangerous! there should be a way to switch the front passenger air bags on so they will deploy if there is impact.

5 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/02/2015

Starting in may 2015 we began to notice that the passenger airbag light would not always seem to work correctly when my son sat there. I just figured it to be a problem with the light in the dash. My son weighing in the 60 pound range, I knew it should not of been on when he was there. Sometimes it said off sometimes it did not. I always felt this was an indicator light issue not thinking a car this new with such low miles could have problems with the airbag. On August 23, 2015 as I was driving alone I noticed the car was not cooling down so I was looking to see if I forgot to turn something on when I noticed that the a/c was indeed on, and not working, as well as the airbag light in the instrument cluster was illuminated. There are multiple problems. Dealer diagnostics verified my concerns. Found dtcs present for pods module. Pods module needs replaced. Found dtcs for high pressure switch open. Sensor needs replaced. Estd; $1800 the problem with the passenger airbag is that the sensor for the weight of the person does not work correctly. Vw has this integrated into the seat base that also is heated. The entire seat base with replacement cost of over $1400 must be replaced in its entirety to make this repair. At this point I was told that vw is not making repairs of this type. Since then I have also had the tire lights come on then off periodically as well as some ipod dock issues. There seems to be many issues related to electrical issues that vw feels they have no responsibility over. I have read that others have had these issues posted unofficially on other sites.

6 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/09/2014

The clock spring in the steering wheel failed. Also referred to as the steering column electronic control module. The failure illuminated the airbag warning light and all the steering wheel switches and horn stopped working. It was just over the 50,000 mi warranty so dealer would not repair.

7 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/14/2014

Airbag light continues to stay on. I had an accident back in 2014 and the airbag never deployed. The steering column ignition switch locked and my key was stuck with the car still running on in a station place. I was trying to park the car and my ignition switch locked and would not moved and kept the key locked in it. I kept trying to move the jiggle the wheel and turn the key but it cause the key to break off in the ignition switch. I had to pair to get the ignition switch replaced and the key replaced. Also after that the horn stop working and I was told it was because the clock spring had to be replaced. I paid again to had the clock spring replaced however the horn now is going in an out. The horn will sound off one day and then for a couple of days it will not work. This happen only 2 weeks after getting the clock spring fixed. Also the horn is not loud it barely makes a noise. Now the sensor light is on for the engine and I was already told there's nothing wrong with the engine.

8 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/03/2013

Our car is driven by 2 drivers- I am 5 feet tall, my husband is 6'1". The car seat gets moved back and forth a lot as we both drive the car daily. In late November my husband moved the seat all the way back and it made a cracking noise. We later noticed the air bag light was on. He found the broken wire under the seat and repaired it, but the light was still on. A call to the dealership revealed they knew about the issue and the fix was to "not move the seat so much". The next week- before we had a chance to take the car in to get the light cleared- the car was involved in a collision. I rear ended a car in slow-and-go traffic when she switched lanes in front of me while I was accelerating. $15,000 in damage was done to the car but the air bags did not go off. A witness that stopped to help had to pry the door open to get me out. The fighter fighters all remarked that they could not believe the air bags didn't go off. No airbags could have been a huge issue if the accident was worse.

9 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/13/2010

Bought new vw Jetta sedan on 08/17/06. On 05/13/10 took the car to the dealer because of car decelerating while driving I. E. Dropping in seconds from 60 miles to 20 miles. It was taken to the dealer multiple times for the same problem. Dealer answer "unable to replicate problem" until warranty of four years expired. The problem continues even after the carbon accumulated on the throttle was cleaned and the fuel pump was replaced. Due to unsafe to drive, requested for the dealer to buy the car back as a lemon. The dealer refuses because the four yr warranty is over. Other problems experienced with this vehicle during this period: air bags lights going off, air bag cover falling off, trunk opening on its own while driving, rain water leaking inside the lining of the car, screws coming off a door panel, doors falling off the hinges, emergency switch falling inside panel, fuel cap not locking, recalls. Dealer recommending to replace the steering wheel column for 2,340.

10 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/26/2009

I purchased a certified used vehicle in 2006 from a Volkswagen dealer in virginia (vokswagen of dulles). Two months after the vehicle purchase, we noticed the car electrical system shut down while approaching a stop sign in reston, va. The local dealer attributed it to a fuel system problem and charged us for a ¿throttle body cleaning. ¿ over the course of two years, we had multiple electrical shutdowns, some at high speed on the highway at night when the vehicle's headlights would go out and the engine would die. At one point the dealer reported a ¿loose ignition switch and replaced that switch. After several more scary events, I emailed vw America with a description of the problem and our fears about the vehicle being unsafe to drive. In March 2009 I called vw customer service and talked to a regional case manager. On that day, the car had shut down in the middle of an intersection narrowly avoiding a collision. Vw replaced the alternator and battery. Three months later, driving on memorial parkway (rt. 66) at night when the vehicles lights failed, the electrical system shut down and the engine died. I once again called vw customer service and was returned a call from a representative who said they would not address the problem further, that the warranty on the vehicle was over and that I had no recourse with Volkswagen for further investigation of the problem. I recently asked vw America customer service for copies of their records relating the case. They refused to give them to me, saying they were ¿proprietary. ¿.

11 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/05/2007

Air bag light comes on and stays on in the vehicle until engine is stopped. This has been going on since I purchased the vehicle back in July of 2007. They've reset the codes, replaced the seatbelt buckle and reset the connectors that have something to do with the airbags and nothing has worked. I've taken it back to the original dealer (where I purchased the car) four times for the same problem and it's still not fixed. I've called Volkswagen of America about this problem and they've done nothing. They suggested I bring it back to the dealership.

12 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/26/2007

The airbag light on my 2006 vw Jetta came on during 2006. I never received notification from vw of a defect but when bringing my car in for maintenance, the dealer said there was a "notice" of a defect in the underseat sensor and/or wiring. On 6/27/06 my car had a driver side front in crash. The air bags did not go off. The body shop said that there was probably not enough damage to set off the airbags. Shortly after getting my car out of the shop (2+ months because vw parts are not readily available) the airbag light is back on. I've brought my car in for maintenance at the vw dealer but they have never mentioned the airbag light which is plain sight. I worry about the safety of my family, friends and myself. To add insult, the electronic switch on the trunk operates off and on, the trunk does not latch unless slammed repeatedly, and within the last week the driver's electric window has ceased to function.

13 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/17/2005

On 9/17/2005 I was pulling into my assigned parking spot at my condo. I was approximately traveling about 3 mph and had my brakes applied to maneuver into my parking spot. Upon reaching the curb, I applied pressure to the brakes and expected to come to a complete stop. However, my car lunged forward and ended up in my neighbor's living room. My car only stopped after taking out the brick structure and front window of her condo. Before making impact with the outside structure I attempted to brake twice with no response. The impact was substantial and yet the airbags never deployed. My car was towed to a garage that my insurance approved and not to the dealership who has serviced my car for all the current recalls and various problems. The recalls and problems include the brake light switch, replacement of the coil ignition, armrest break, alarm sounding for no reason, and the window falling into the door frame. This accident caused serious property damage and the police were called to the scene. The police acknowledged my skid marks and my attempt at applying the brakes. The situation was treated/cited as a car accident so that my neighbor and I could go through the proper procedures of her damages being reimbursed. I plan to prove my car is defective and a lemon. I would appreciate any feedback, advice or suggestions regarding my situation.

14 Air Bag On-off Switch problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/29/2005

Since 05/29/05 I am seing air bag indicator on the panel (dash board), I contacted the dealer and scheduled appointment for a check. I also scheduled appointment for hazard switch recall. While checking NHTSA and other sites I came to know there are few other people who had similar situation and filled a complaint with NHTSA. So I would like to include my case with NHTSA so that if I will be informed if any recalls be done on this issue. I request NHTSA to act soon to have these recalled before any unwanted incidendents occur and before there are any major issues with this. Please keep me and others informed the progress of the case.
