Volkswagen Jetta owners have reported 34 problems related to front air bag sensor control (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volkswagen Jetta based on all problems reported for the Jetta.
Every single light on the dash is turned on even though there's no problem, and the speedometer meter doesn't move. I got the issue fixed by an independent mechanic who said the computer only needed to be reset, but the vw dealership insists that I still have a big issue that can effect the usage of my brakes, airbags, everything, and wants to charge me $3500 for a non-problem. Since the sensors are all on, I don't know when to fill up oil or gas, and I won't be alerted if I have a flat tire or there's an issue with the engine. They also mentioned that since the sensors are dead it may not deploy my airbag system. I've been told it's not worth fixing, my car only has 49,537 miles and is in good condition; this is absurd.

I have owned this used vehicle for 3 months. When attempting to apply the brake at low speed (10-15mph) the brake pedal stuck in place and would not go down. This brake failure resulted in an accident. During said accident, at low impact, the airbag was triggered to deploy. This leads me to believe the airbag or sensor is defective, as I have been in a much more serious accident with an older Jetta that did not result in airbag deployment. I am at risk of having my vehicle totaled out because of these issues when it normally would be repairable.

With my car in motion every time I turn my car on, I have multiple warnings that come on due to a fault in sensors causing my car to have the engine light on. I have asked the dealership if there were any recalls for air emission on my car or air bag recalls on my car and there answer was no. The driver side door handle has broken off to where you cannot properly close the door (I have krazy glued it back on once already) and it just is becoming a big issue. Every time I fix one issue, another one rises up causing me more headaches and stress due to no one having answers for me.

Passenger seat occupancy sensor is poorly designed and anything placed on the seat initiates the sensor and the fasten seatbelt light and gong. Items that cause this condition has been fast food, small dogs, paperwork, a cell phone on a charger, my cd case. I rented an identical vehicle from hertz and this issue did not happen. Looking into the problem online this has been a problem with many owners stretching back to 2011 model years. If the seat sensor senses something on it and there is a wreck both airbags will be deployed further risking the driver to flying debris. Dealer claims this is a normal situation. Since some vehicles are having this problem and other vw products are not I kinda doubt it.
Airbag sensors malfunctioning at least twice on daughter's Jetta. Just had the faulty wiring under the driver's seat repaired and, a few days later, light is back on with yet another diagnosis for another issue with the crash sensor, potentially. See on this feed that many others have the same issue. Why is vw not issuing a lifetime recall?.

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced multiple electrical failures that included the headlights shutting off while driving, the door sensors erroneously indicating the doors were opened (which also caused an audible warning chime to activate), and the floor lights illuminated while driving. In addition, the driver side door locks and windows would not operate, the turn signals would no longer operate, and the air bag sensor illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failures. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 175,000.
Air bag sensors - defective. I've had to replace the sensors in this vehicle twice in the last 2 years.
Tdi engine wiring harness chafed inside the wire loom cause numerous electrical issues. Including abs, steering module, airbag, engine speed sensor, temperature gauge, and stability control. Very difficult and costly to diagnose.
Our 2006 Jetta tdi had an airbag fault. We took the vehicle to a Volkswagen dealership and they tested the air code and found out that the passenger occupant detector module went bad due to a electrical malfunction in the circuit. The dealership was not able to say if the airbags were going to work on not in the case of a crash. Volkswagen is refusing to take any ownership of keeping their vehicle safe and covering the cost of the part. I contact Volkswagen USA and they gave the reason they will not cover the part because I did not have an extended warranty. I feel that Volkswagen is being neglectful to their claim on providing a safe vehicle. Now that the airbag sensor is going out, we are having more electrical problems with headlights, parking lights, taillights, brake lights, day time running lights, and turn signals.
My crash sensor's went off for no reason. There was no accident at all. This is causing an airbag fault light to be on in my car and from what I understand, the airbags will not work now if the light is on. The previous owner of my car had this same fault fixed (with only about 20,000 miles on the odo). There are numerous complaints out there about these same faults on the same cars (mkv Jetta, rabbit/gti). There needs to be a recall to fix this since it is a safety hazard!.
My trunk has never closed properly from the day I drove it off the lot. I took the vehicle back within a few weeks to be repaired. They did not have the part and it took a few more weeks. When they replaced it, it still continued not to close properly. I have the old part. I also recently had an air bag default sensor come on. I have contacted them multiple times regarding this and they continue to advise that they will have to charge me a diagnosis of 97. 50 and I will have to pay for a rental if this is not covered under warranty. I have continuously had problems with this service department. I have tried to drop the vehicle off and they insist that they do not have room and will not be able to get to my vehicle for several days. These are very serious hazards that could be life threatening yet they fail to recognize the importance of their customer.

Airbag failure light on dash came on at 65,000 miles. I have read many reports of an internal fault with the firmware in the original factory crash sensor, I think the manufacture (Volkswagen) should recall and replace these defective sensors. The airbag may deploy at any time or not deploy in a wreck.

The contact owns a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta. The air bag warning light illuminated. The mechanic stated that the air bag control module failed and needed to be replaced. The failure mileage was 172,000 and current mileage was 174,000.
Air bag light comes on and stays on in the vehicle until engine is stopped. This has been going on since I purchased the vehicle back in July of 2007. They've reset the codes, replaced the seatbelt buckle and reset the connectors that have something to do with the airbags and nothing has worked. I've taken it back to the original dealer (where I purchased the car) four times for the same problem and it's still not fixed. I've called Volkswagen of America about this problem and they've done nothing. They suggested I bring it back to the dealership.
Wife stated that when she hit brakes it was hard to stop car ,did not slow, rear ended a SUV at about 30 mph which pushed front end up to windshield above bumper, pushed engine into firewall. She incurred major seat belt bruising with no air bag deployment. After inspection the insurance company found that two sensors had been distorted along with cracked engine mounts and bent cradle. They totaled the car due in part to no air bag deployment,t and felt that the car would be unsafe after repairs. After contacting Volkswagen, they said that air bag deployment should not have happened. But what if my wife had jumped into the car and forgot to put the seat belt on she would have gone through the windshield. I feel that this is a major safety defect since most accidents would over ride the bumper due to low bumper height. Volkswagen does not seem to think this is a problem from the pictures I sent them and our talk on the phone.
Two air bags deployed (driver's side, curtain and seat) on my 2004 vw Jetta w/35,000km while driving at 15km/h, no body damage, no flat tire. Vw will not cover the repairs, said to call insurance, not a "sensor" issue, crash data recorded of course since the air bags deployed - and what is disturbing is that this could easily happen again in a pot hole, flat tire, speed bump and vw does not seem be bothered by that fact. . . But I should pay for this over and over and/or make claims with my insurance. . . Told them that if their air bags were so sensitive, they should post warnings in the vehicle. Very disgusted with vw and the car is still at the dealership and I am sure they are anxious to have it removed from their lot because they keep calling to see if I contacted my insurance. . .

The contact stated on 8-16-05 while driving on the highway the car died. Then it lurched forward, stopped and lurched forward again. This was the fifth time the car has been at the dealers. The first time the check engine light came on, and they replaced a fuel injector. The second time the abs light, the air bag light, and the check engine light came on. They installed a full distributor rail. The third time the engine overheated, and the air conditioner would not work . They replaced the battery and cooling fans. The fourth time the check engine light came on again, and they replaced a valve. This last time the dealer gave him a loaner car. They have not diagnosed the problem yet. The dealer called on Friday to tell him they would not pay for the loaner car.
I was driving my 2003 vw Jetta under normal road conditions. I stopped at a red light in an intersection, continued when it turned green. I hit a small sized pothole at the other end of the intersection at speeds below 15mph, which caused the wrongful deployment of the side curtain and seat airbags as well as locking the seatbelt tensioner making it inoperable. I inspected the vehicle after the incident and found no damage whatsoever to all body panels and wheels/tires. The following morning I had a mechanic inspect the car for any suspension or steering problems and none were found. I took the vehicle to the dealer where I purchased it to have it fixed under warranty and the dealer and vw of America have denied warranty repairs and have not yet done anything to fix the problem. I did research on the internet for similar incidents with this make and model and have found that there have been 500 similar incidents of spontaneous airbag deployment in 2002-2004 vw Jettas, golfs, gti and new beetles around the country.
I was making a left hand turn and for no reason whatsoever the driver and passenger airbags deployed. Following the deployment of the airbags, my hands were thrown off the steering wheel, causing me to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle then proceded to go straight up onto a curb causing the entire passenger side of the vehicle to be damaged. The car was not drivable.
Turn signal/emergency flash light failed, airbag warning light turned on and stayed on.

While driving smoke filled in car, flames appeared between driver seat & counsel. My 17 y/o got 2nd degree burns putting out flame. Airbag, driver side deployed while car was shut off and seat was being moved back. This caused pain to my husband's arm.
The airbag light randomly came on in my car. I have absolutely no clue why it came on. I had it vag com'd. And a code came up as being a bad control module for the airbag.

The vehicle skidded on the snow on a major interstate highway and collided with a guardrail. The airbag should have deployed and did not deploy.
My car which was purchased brand new in July 2001 has been to the repair shop 13 times. I purchased a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. The ongoing problem is that the car is losing power while accelerating. Volkswagen doesn't want to acknowledge the defect of their own product. I was told two things which doesn't make sense to me. First, I was told my engine is not apart of the recall for those other vw cars that are losing power. Second, a vw representative told me it was my extra car mats that is probably causing the problem. I think Volkswagen is just ignoring this serious problem. If my car slows down on me whenever it wants and I die as a result of their defect product that they don't want to recognize, it is truly going to be a serious problem. The car had problems with the engine, airbags, malfunctioned sensor, clock spring, harness, and now it is losing power. Although this car has had numerous problems, this is the most serious problem that I would like o be rectified. Volkswagen service department changed the computer and told me this will definitely solve the problem. Obviously it did not solve the problem. Since the computer was changed in sept. 2002 the car lost power 3 times since then.
-the contact took the 2002 Volkswagen GLS wagon 1. 8 turbo with failure mileage: 6,261 to the dealership due to problems dealing with the air bag indicator. The technician at the dealership stated that there was no particular problem. However, they have continued to diagnose the contacts vehicle. He paid a great deal of money for the service. The dealership technician stated that there may be an airbag deployment problem, but the technician was not sure. The contact stated that ever since November 9, 2001 the airbag indicator remained illuminated on his dashboard. He reported this problem to Volkswagen numerous times, but they have not offered him any explanation for the problem. The current mileage of the contacts vehicle was 82,500 miles.

Date of first known problem provided. Have already been through bbb autoline regarding most of the defects listed and thought manufacturer had fixed them. Now vehicle has the same problems plus more. All work being done at dealership is at manufacturer's expense, however, this car is a major inconvenience due to unreliability. Electrical problems aren't solved with replaced wiring harnesses, unsafe door hinges and window regulators make for hazardous driving conditions, airbag sensor problems, and quick to wear out rear brakes are all very dangerous defects for a new car owner to suffer with. Dt.
Air bag was repaired 5 times and spiral spring replaced - light still indicates malfunctioning system. Consumer states that brake light was inoperative and the electrical connectors were replaced, installed front heated oxygen sensor, install 6 disc cd changer, battery was replaced and wiring harness war replaced. Owner is no longer in possession of the vehicle.
I am dubious about the safety of a well maintained car when the transmission fails in the first 6 months. The manufacturer's serviceman jumps the battery against owners manual recommendations and blows the internal fuse for the radio and sets off the airbag sensor (neither repaired by the dealer at no charge. Also,) tires needing replacement at less than 20,000 miles - lock cylinder fallling out of driver's side door- and all the power locks failing, resulting in having to go to the dealer just to get out of the car.
