Vehicle rear-ended on a busy day between 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm on a Thursday. All the air-bags in the car deployed. The driver side air-bag stayed inflated for a long time, and the right side air-bag also did not deflate. Inflated air-bag held the driver so tight, and the driver could not exit out of the accident car. Simultaneously seat also held the driver so tight. The driver suffered a significant injury fracturing his sternum. The car was less than 40 mph at the time of the incident. The manufacturer downloaded the electronic data record from the car and never shared it with the driver despite the written request. Driver feels brake may have failed. Driver has to slide out of the car as the side air bag stayed inflated. Picture attached shows air-bag staying inflated even after 10-25 mins and started to go down slowly.

The passenger side airbags deployed without provocation in the car I had just purchased on March 21, 2017. I had just pulled to a stop to allow a passenger to disembark in the parking lot of a convenience store. The airbags deployed making a horrific noise and engulfing the inside of the car with white smoke. The cause of the deployment is unknown. The car did not collide with anything. The problem was reported to the dealership on April 5, 2017 and to the corporate headquarters of Volkswagen on April 7, 2017. The case # is 170305419. To date the car has not been solved. No one seems to have an explanation for what happened, and the car is still stilling on the lot of the dealership where it was returned.

" takata recall" ? my husband was going to work one day and a deer came out of nowhere and hit him. He was going about 30 mph and was getting ready to turn into work. When the deer hit him, the drivers side air bag(curtain I think they call it) and drivers rear air bag deployed but not the airbag directly in front front of him. The side airbag hit him so hard that the airbag material left a mark on the left side of his neck. (it looked like a burlap/canvas material) my husband suffered a concussion and now has pcs and still is having problems because of the airbag . The car is currently not recall for the airbag but should be. His car was totaled.

The passenger side air bag on my 2001 vw Jetta deployed while I was parking my car at work. As I came to a full stop where I was going to park my car I heard a loud bang from inside the cab of my Jetta. The loud bang distorted my thinking process as I was trying to figure out where the loud noise came from. As the smoke filled my car I still could not figure out what just happen until I looked around inside the cab of my car and with the smoke inside the cab I was able to see a white bag sticking out of the passenger seat in my car, this is when I knew that the air bag on the passenger seat had deployed. There were no other cars near me, there were no heavy winds blowing early that morning, and I did not hit any potholes nor did I hit any side curves while parking my car and the air bag still went off.

Neither front nor side airbags deployed during a front end collision with a tree at approximately 50 mph.
Passenger side airbag sensor has failed in under 3 years from date of purchase, vw is refusing to admit that this is a part defect on their end and is requiring me to pay for the repairs. This vehicle has never been in any accidents and is garage kept and in mint condition.

The front and side air bag on the drivers side is inoperable due to a wiring problem under the drivers seat.
I was driving my children to school in the morning. They were doing construction on the roads around my house and all the sewer caps were exposed. They are re-paving all the streets. I barely clipped one and my driver side "side" airbags (headliner air bags and the driver seat side airbags) deployed for no reason. There was no collision, no impact. I barely clipped the sewer cap and I'm not even positive the airbag deployment occurred at the same time. Vwoa is currently investigating but after reading about air bag deployments for some time now, I can't imaging that running over a sewer cover at 15 mph and barely clipping it would be enough to deploy the side air bags. Luckily I was able to stop the car and get it to side of the road without injuring myself or anyone else. It was a very scary situation. Still waiting to hear the outcome from vw.

The contact owns a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving approximately 25 mph, the contact drove over an uneven road surface, which was raised about 2 inches from the ground, and the front driver and passenger side air bags inadvertently deployed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostic testing where the technician advised that there were aftermarket shocks that could have caused an impact with the sub frame. The technician advised that the impact could have caused the air bags to deploy but did not guarantee that it was the cause of the deployment. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the cost of diagnostic testing or repairs would not be covered. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 51,608.
Driving on the interstate I came to the end of some scarified pavement. When I went across the end of the scarified pavement, the right side airbags went off. The dealer inspects under the car and finds a small scratch on the trailing arm mount and says the car was bottomed. Only problem is the scratch is not on the bottom of the mount and is even above the parking brake cable which routes beneath the mount. The parking brake cable does not have any damage or scratches on it. Also, why wouldn’t the front airbags go off instead of the side? if the car had bottomed on the pavement or on the lip of the pavement where the scarified pavement ended, the mark on the trailing arm mount would have damage from the initial point of contact and scrape along the leading edge of the mount until whatever hit it had cleared under the mount and it would have looked a lot worse. Anyway the dealer wants $4000 to fix the airbags, not including a new seat cover since they don’t manufacture it anymore. If you want a picture of the impact mark let me know. It’s very miniscule. Also, after the airbag deployment, there were not any tire, rim, or alignment problems. In comparison, in my 1997 golf, my son hit a bad pothole last spring that popped the tire, bent the alloy rim, and whacked the alignment but the airbag did not go off. If you need any other information feel free to contact me.

The contact owns a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving approximately 5 mph the contact was involved in a crash. The vehicle was struck on the front and rear drivers side door. The seat and curtain air bags deployed. The contact was able to drive the vehicle from the scene. A police report was filed. The contact went to the emergency room because he suffered a slight loss of hearing, sensitivity, and ringing in the left ear caused by the deployment of the curtain air bag. The emergency room physician advised the contact that within a few days he would feel relief. The contact continued to experience the symptoms and notified a doctor who diagnosed the symptoms to be caused by tinnitus and hyperacusis. The contact continued to receive treatment. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 24,000.

The contact owns a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph over a bump in the road, the front passenger side air bags deployed. The failure was not diagnosed nor was the vehicle repaired. The failure mileage was 170,345.
I was driving up olney st. In providence, ri when all of a sudden without notice the side airbag curtain and waist side seat air bag deployed without and impact.
2003 vw Jetta tdi spontaneous/unintended passenger side airbag (seat) and side curtain air bag (window) deployment. While driving on freway s880 hayward,CA at 65mph on Mar 01 2011. Passenger side, side curtain airbags deployed. There was no collision, impact with road debris or rough pavement involved. It will be reported to dealership. Seeking repair ears ringing, smoke, engine shut off coast to side of road air out smoke and engine was able to start. Stopped one mile down road and report to chp on side of road at a street. This happened at 9:25pm on my way to work.
I was driving my 2002 vw Jetta, my 6 year old was riding in the backseat in the passenger side when the passenger side curtain airbags spontaneously went off!!! it sounded like a shot gun went off in the car, scared both of us!! I did not hit anything, anyone, no one was even driving around me! it was crazy! I thought the car was on fire due to the smoke coming out of the airbag. . . . No on was hurt but it was terrifying and it could have been a lot worse!! I am the original owner of the car, bought it new in 2002. It's been a great car, I've owned vw's for years and over all, they are great vehicles but this has really freaked me out! I took it to the dealer and they ran a diagnostic, turns out the computer in the car said there was a crash - this is no physical evidence of any damage on the car to justify this happening! the cost to repair it is 5300. 00!!! the care likely isn't even worth that. The next step is to contact vwoa. I just read of some other instances this happened and looks like vw did repair the airbag at no charge. I'm hoping they do it for me, otherwise, I'm out of a vehicle. There's no way I can sell it like that, I've just lost what ever money I might have been able to sell that car for. . . . . How many other complaints have been filed pertaining to this issue?? [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Driver started from a stopped position, ran over curb between 5-10 mph, side airbags deployed.
I was driving approximately five mph as I left my home when the side impact airbag deployed for no reason.
My husband was driving on route 87 in new york when without warning the driverside airbags in our 2003 Jetta deployed without warning. No lights where on or any impact or crash.
Airbag warning light went on yesterday. I plan to have it repaired this week. However, this is the third time this year I have seen the airbag warning light go on. The two previous times were each repaired, on 16 June 2010 and 24 June 2010. At the time of each of those two prior repairs, I was informed that a sensor had failed and that the front passenger airbag was thus disabled. This means that a vital safety component failed twice this year and possibly a third time.
Passenger side air bags in a 2002 vw Jetta deployed after hitting a pothole on a city street at approximately 25 mph. The adult in the passenger seat received bruises on his arm from the deployment.
Was driving along a graded dirt road when passenger side airbag and side curtain airbag deployed suddenly. There was no side impact whatsoever, and was not able to determine any cause of airbag deploying. Two passengers in the car suffered temporary ringing in their ears and headaches, but no significant injuries occurred, thank goodness. Have contacted dealer for information about repairs, but nothing has been done to fix it yet.
The passenger side air bag has too much voltage going to the bag and as such deactivated all the airbags in the vehicle.
2003 vw Jetta: spontaneous/unintended passenger side, side curtain air bag deployment. While driving subject car on may 5, 2010, passenger side, side curtain airbags deployed. There was no collision, impact with road debris or rough pavement involved. Reported to dealership. Seeking repair of same.
My husband was driving my car over railroad tracks when the passenger side airbags deployed and the car shut off. Fortunately my husband was driving slow and no one was injured. My vw dealership instructed me to contact my insurance agent. They conducted an investigation and found no evidence of collision and refused to cover damages. Then I brought the car to vw and they discovered some undercarriage damage and informed my insurance agency. Upon re-investigation of the car the insurance decided that they would now cover the damages that are estimated at around $5,000 but I have a $500 deductible and my premiums will now go up. As far as I am concerned railroad tracks should not deploy airbags and I should absolutely not be responsible for any costs related.
My wife was driving her 2007 vw Jetta when she was t-boned from a GMC SUV, approx. Speed of GMC was 40 mph and approx speed of Jetta was 45 mph. The Jetta was struck at a 90 degree angle directly into the drivers side door. The impact was enough that my wife needed to be removed from her car with the jaws of life. The steering column airbag deployed however the multiple side and lumbar airbags did not deploy. Had these deployed her injures would had been much less severe. Both cars are being totaled by the insurance companies. This vehicle was purchased specifically because of the safety features, now after contacting vw, mindy prentice regional consultant Volkswagen customer care is trying to tell me that the this isn't the type of crash that would trigger side airbags. However after talking to multiple dealers in the area as well as going back to my initial suspicion it seems that the side airbags most certainly should have deployed.
The contact owns a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta tdi diesel. While driving 25 mph the driver side curtain and chair air bag deployed without warning and without any damage being done on to the vehicle. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer and there were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 150,000.
2003 vw Jetta - side and window airbags deployed on passenger side while car was parked overnight. No visible signs of impact to cause airbags to deploy. Will have to have new airbags put back in at approximate cost of $2,500. If deployed while vehichle moving could be a dangerous situation. Vw told us going over a pothole can also cause them to deploy.
The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving 70 mph using the cruise control, she began tapping on the steering and suddenly the driver side air bag deployed. She crashed after the air bag deployed; however, she has no memory of the crash. She did not sustain any injuries. The current and failure mileages were 4000.
Air bags deployed after going over a bump.
Side curtain and seat airbag deployed while driving at 35-40 mph. No damage to the car other than that caused by the airbags deploying. No potholes in the smooth paved road near the intersection of FL sr70 and us301. No debris in the road or any reason for the airbags to have deployed. Driver received welt and bruises on the ribs from the seat airbag.
