My brake light switch went out in my 2001 vw Jetta GLS 2. 0l. When the brake light switch goes out there is no warning in the dash to let me know it was out. I didn't have any break lights until someone at a stop light yelled out their window to tell me. I took my car to vw dealership and they said I needed a new break light switch. It turns out this is a ongoing problem for vw's of all years and makes. I would like to file a complaint because this seems to be a widespread problem, vw hasn't released information about this and it can be very dangerous. I don't want to see myself or someone else get killed or hurt because of a faulty part. I've already spent the $12 to fix it so this complaint is not about getting my money back. It's about saving lives.

My brake light switch has malfunctioned causing total loss of exterior brake lights on my 99 Jetta passenger vehicle. This malfunction has been recalled by the NHTSA on many other 99 vw Jettas, however my particular vehicle did not fit in the VIN number range of the safety recall. I suggest this safety recall should be extended to include other models because evidently it is a problem and it is a serious safety hazard.

I've experienced several problems with my 2001 Volkswagen Jetta glx. I still wonder why it's not a lemon. Had problems with the brake switch which was a recall. I also had problems with the check engine light. Technicians made diagnostic check and said I needed the heat sensor changed so I did. After a week, check engine light lit up again so I brought it back to the dealership and had another diagnostic check which I paid for again 78 bucks. This time the tech's said I needed the sparks and wires changed because it was shooting blanks. Pre-paid for the parts and when the parts arrived, I brought my car back to get it fixed so I did. Later, I got call from the service reps and said my ignition coil broke so they had to order that again. After everything was said and done. I just wanted to let my financer to just voluntarily repo the piece of trash. One more break down and I'm hiring a lemon attorney. This is too much.
7th time this has happened. Car is immobilized by a faulty brake light switch - has happened every six months since we purchased the car.

Normal operation of vehicle until the failure occurred. No incidents as of yet. Both tail lights and window brake lights do not illuminate. Car was serviced on a previous recall.
I drive a 1999 vw Jetta, standard transmission. I was informed by a police officer that my brake lights were not operating. After searching the internet, I learned from the NHTSA web site that there was a recall issued may of 2006 for certain vw cars that had their brake light switch replaced for an earlier recall. I called the dealership and they told me my car was serviced under the last recall, but it does not qualify for the recall. I had the brake light switch replaced and the problem has been corrected. The old part is not available.
I own a 2002 vw Jetta. Recently, the brake light has become inoperative at times and remains on even while the vehicle is not running. I have completed several searches online and have learned that there have been multiple safety recalls for 2002 Jetta's exhibiting the same problem, with the potential number of units affected to be 377,130 in 2004 and 362,000 earlier this year. When I contacted the vw dealership in my area to make an appointment to have this looked at I was told that the repair would be completed free of charge as a result of the recent recall. When I arrived at the dealership on the day of the scheduled appointment I was told otherwise. The gentleman at the dealership mentioned that my vehicle did not fall in the VIN range of the recall. I then called vw of America and was told on two separate occasions that indeed the repair would be covered free of charge. I then called the dealership to reschedule the appointment and was again told that I would have to pay for diagnostics to be completed on my vehicle as well as covering the charges for parts and labor. The issue remains that my brake light is malfunctioning, there has been a recall which impacts 2002 Jetta's but I seem to get conflicting information from different sources. Can someone help?.
I have been experiencing a problem similar to the recall on 2002 vw Jetta's with faulty brake light. Except I have a 2003 model.

Rear brake lights come on and stay on after vehicle parked and no keys in ignition causing battery to drain. Purchase new battery within 2 days new battery dead. Noticed brake lights were staying on when car parked. There is recall NHTSA id #04v096000 for 2000 vw Jetta's for the same problem, but I am told it doesn't apply to this vehicle even though the problem is identical.

Dealer replaced switch at cost of $193. 23 parts & labor, dealer & vw of America state that VIN is not included in scope of recall for 04v096000. Jetta brake light switch (on our invoice it is part no. 1jo-945-511-e") according to the service dept at commonwealth vw, this switch has been recalled as defective in other vw's, but not the Jetta. When it fails, the brake lights go out and the car will not shift. I bought this car new for my daughter, m. B. , the registered owner, and I do not like the idea that she is driving a defective vehicle to and from our home in villa park, CA. To school in riverside, CA. (about 60 miles round trip) daily, and at night! this part should be recalled from all vehicles.
Vw claims the exterior brake lighting switch isn't a recall item or problem but not only am I having problems with the one for me car but the other vw owners here at my place of employment have encountered the same problem as well.

Brake light switch (2001 vw Jetta GLS tdi) researched on internet says there is a recall for this part, but is not in effect yet. Driving with brake lights stuck on is really dangerous and speedy recall for this item is essential. I have to remove the fuse in order to turn off the lights, and soon as car is turned on the lights stay on making it impossible for other drivers to know when I am stepping on the brakes. Could seriously cause many accidents in the future for all vehicle owners.

In 2004, my 2000 vw Jetta's break lights failed to turn off. When I took the car in for service, the dealer replaced a switch. Several months later, vw were issued a recall on vehicle to replace the brake light switch which would either fail to turn off or fail to turn the break lights on. Vw refunded the amount I had paid to repair my vehicle. On September 16, 2005, a driver notified me after a near miss at an intersection that my break lights were failing to light. I brought my car to the dealership and they claimed that the switch had failed, but said that it was not covered under the original recall because the switch had already been replaced. The recall repair work did not repair my vehicle. The break light switch failed after the recall repair was made.

The brake light switch on my Jetta 2000 vehicle malfunction. When this happens the automatic shift lock (asl) locks when park or neutral. Cause traffic jam. After 30 minutes the swith started working temporarily. It happen 3 times in the last 2 days.
On 7-30-2005 I drove approximately 15 miles and while stopped refueling noted that the brake lights were on despite the vehicle being off and the lights off. The brake lights remained on continuously until the brake switch was replaced at chaplin's Volkswagen in bellevue, washington on 8-2-05. Vw has informed me that my VIN number is not within the recall they had on brake light switches. However, when I was at the dealership two other newer vw Jettas were also there for the same problem and the dealership acknowledged they see this problem frequently. Obviously the issue has not been taken care of through 2004 (newest model presented at the dealership). Fortunately the vehicle was not rear ended en route to the dealership.

My car had recall #04v096000 performed approx 1. 5 years ago (a switch was replaced). That same switch had been replaced several times before. It is the switch that detects whether or not I have pressed the brake, allowing me to shift out of park. Sometimes it also affects my brake lights, causing them to not turn on when the brake is depressed. However, on may 14, 2005 I brought the car in again for the same problem, even after the recall. This is the 4th time it has happened. This time it did affect the brake lights - they would not come on when I depressed the brake. The dealership stated that the cause of the brake light failure was not due to a fuse, but due to that switch, and that the two are connected. When the switch malfunctions the brake lights could malfunction as well. The dealership replaced the switch (again). This is the 4th time that part has been replaced. The consumer has experienced several electrical failures such as a short to the ground which required a new fuel pump relay, esp light which indicated a bad brake light, the check engine light illuminated indicating a bad abs pump and relay. Updated 01/27/06.
: the contact stated while driving at 35 mph on normal road condition problems were notice with the traction button for the esp system. The vehicle was taken to the dealership who determined the black brake switch failed. The brake light switch has been replaced for the purple brake light switch twice. The black brake light switch had a recall for 2002 model but does not cover the 2003 models. Additional problems are associated with the brake switch, which includes the traction button for the esp system and the park position lever which locks often. Also the contact once became stranded on a highway when the vehicle stalled and could not be restarted. The vehicle was towed to the dealership who replaced the ignition coil. All repairs made by the dealership has been covered by the vehicle warranty. The contact expressed concern about brake lights because represents serious safety problem.
