37 Clutch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/10/2007

Our 2006 Volkswagen tdi was towed to the dealer again yesterday for clutch problems. At 2 months with 5,000 miles the clutch would intermittently not engage. Was able to drive it to dealer , and dealer replaced master cylinder, bleed system and reassembled. At 6 months, with 15,000 miles the clutch failed, stranding us along the highway. Had it towed to the dealer, who removed the transmission, and inspected dual mass flywheel. Slipped throw out, bearing came apart, the fork for bearing slid into pressure plate. Replaced flywheel, clutch plate, pressure throw out bearing fork and spring. - at 9 months with 20,000 miles transmission whined in third gear and had a harsh shift in all gears. While driving to dealer the car popped out of gear. Dealer found transmission leaking fluid from bell housing. Called Volkswagen, and was told to check for cracks in case. Removed case ,and inspected for cracks. Had hairline cracks. Removed and replaced transmission, and reassembled and added fluid. " this repair took the longest as the dealer has to wait for parts. The car was at the dealer this time for over three weeks. 4- 10 months with 22,000 miles three weeks after last repair we were again stranded at the side of the road. At a stop sign depressed clutch, put car in first, started to move and car made a loud noise and clutch was dead again. Towed to dealer ,and we are waiting to hear again from them. Both my husband and I have been driving stick shift for over 20 years each. Our dealer has never suggested that we don't know how to drive a stick shift although I have seen online this was often said as soon as the clutch went out. Everything so far has been replaced at no cost to us. The manual transmission was very unreliable, and in heavy traffic it could easily lead to an accident. Luckily, while we drive many miles it was mostly country highways.

38 Clutch problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/03/2007

My girlfriend purchased a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta 1. 8t in 2005, new overstocks from the lot. She just hit 30000 miles ,and the clutch went out while she was driving home one evening. We had the vehicle towed to the nearest dealer to find that Volkswagen was blaming the problem on driver's error . The dealer wanted $1900. 00 for repairs on a job that can be done for substantially less through an alternative auto shop. When we called to inquire about the limited restriction we were told that the item was considered wear and tear, and would not be covered by the warranty, but needed to be replaced only by a Volkswagen dealership to keep her extended warranty valid. After hearing this absurd policy I decided to check around to see if any other people have had issues with Volkswagen clutch reliability to find that this was an issue known to Volkswagen. However, instead of addressing the clutch issue as a faulty part they found it to be more successful to blame the mechanical failure on user error. This was especially disturbing to me after reading several Volkswagen owner reviews that stated the faulty clutch left them stranded while traveling. I believe that this issue needed immediate attention as it was my strong belief that Volkswagen has vehicles with impending known mechanical errors on the road, but they choose to neglect the issue.

39 Clutch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/28/2007

Around 12-13k mi a lot of strange vibration appeared on the clutch pedals, a lot of pulsation during take offs and shifts, slight grinding noice during shifts, vibration from the engine compartment and the shift leaverage at around 2k rpm. Makes it easy to stall especialy during hot days. Dealer identify the problem as the failing dmf and throw-out bearing and possibly a spring/pressure plate. The clutch disk itself was not slipping.

40 Clutch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/19/2007

Clutch has failed twice while driving. First time March 2007 at 8,000 miles. Clutch and flywheel replaced and failed again may 2007 at 10,000 miles.

41 Clutch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/23/2007

Clutch flywheel problems with my 2006 Jetta tdi. Left me stranded on highway with only 37 k miles on it. Dealer says not covered under warranty as wear and tear, this is the second time it has needed to be replaced in 1 year. We were exiting off of a highway and the clutch stayed depressed stuck to the floor and the transmission was not working.

42 Clutch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/11/2007

Clutch assembly in both my 2006 vw Jetta's had to be replaced, because of incorrect assembly at plant. One is running well, the other one is still not running properly.

43 Clutch problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/21/2007

I purchased my 2004 vw Jetta gli 1. 8t last August. It had 21,000 miles when I purchased it. At about 23,000 to 24,000 miles I was driving on the interstate and with no prior warnings the clutch popped. Thinking that it was the previous owner that caused the problem I had the car towed to a non Volkswagens dealer thinking that it was not still under warranty( which it wasn't). The repair shop told me that it was "driver error" that cause the problem and I assumed that it was the previous owner. I paid the $1500 for the repairs and about 25,000 to 26,000 miles later it went out again. I once again had it towed to the repair shop and was once again told that it was "driver error" that cause the problem. I paid the $1500 again and kept driving. Then about 200 or 300 miles later the clutch went out again. This time I sent it to a Volkswagen dealer and had them look at it. After about a week and a half without a car they finally fixed the problem and once again blamed it on "driver error. " by this time I was sure that there was something that both dealers were missing so I called the first repair shop and they sent the service manager to talk to the service manager at the vw dealership. Both had replaced the exact same three parts and both think that it was because of "driver error. " if it was driver error then why is the time between each clutch getting shorter but its the same problem every time? so I paid my $2000 and left and now have spent $5000 on a car I expected to last me over 100,000 miles. There is definitely something wrong with the vw clutch.

44 Clutch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/22/2006

Faulty clutch and flywheel. Flywheel blew apart and destroyed clutch. The incident nearly caused an accident which could have possibly killed my entire family.

45 Clutch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/15/2006

My 2006 tdi seems to have had a clutch failure at 8950 miles. I was sitting in traffic and the engine started smoking and giving off a large amount of noxious fumes and wouldn't accelerate. I waited for towing outside on the freeway in sub-zero temperature. It was a Saturday so waited until Monday for it to go to the shop. The dealer says they were unable to re-create the problem and sent me off with the fail-prone car. I am very unhappy with Volkswagen, if this is their idea of customer satisfaction.

46 Clutch problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/08/2006

My flywheel exploded earlier last year and now I know that this is a common occurrence in diesel Jettas. I had to have the clutch and the flywheel replaced, and Volkswagen would not do it under warranty.

47 Clutch problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/07/2006

About 2 â½ years ago I purchased a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta 1. 8t with the manual transmission (4 years/48,000 mile warranty). A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that I had less and less power to drive the car when it was in gear. On December 7, I brought the car to the original dealership where I purchased the vehicle. I was told that the clutch had worn out and was not covered under warranty. Thus, the cost of the repair on the vehicle was going to be $1,800! my car has 30,700 miles on it, I am 34 years old and there are certain days when I drive it less than 5 miles a day! of course, I was told by my car-salesman, the service manager, the telephone operators at Volkswagen and the general manger at the place where I purchased the vehicle that I (through poor driving habits and little experience driving a clutch) wore it out. I requested to personally speak to the area service representative from Volkswagen yet, I was never given his/her contact information. In addition, I gave my contact information to the dealership to have them reach the Volkswagen service representative to have them contact me. Overall, I was never able to speak to this individual. I had 6 years of driving experience on a Ford with no clutch problems. . Read more...

48 Clutch problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/06/2006

We asked our dealership to acquire it for us after our 2004 tdi was totaled. Current vehicle is a certified pre-owned we purchased April 25, 2006 with 10583 miles on it. Previous owner was Volkswagen of America. On July 2, 2006 while on vacation the clutch completely failed after driving several miles in bumper to bumper traffic it started smoking and then the pedal went to the floor and the clutch locked up. The vehicle then had about 14-15,000 miles on it. A maine dealer determined that the hydraulic cylinder had failed and the entire clutch failed. Took more than two weeks to repair the vehicle. When the vehicle was serviced by our virginia dealer it was reported to us that the transmission was cracked due to improper re-installation. Vehicle then had 17632 miles on it. It took another two weeks to force the maine dealer to pay for the replacement transmission and replace it. On Dec. 6, 2006 my wife the valet parking service brought the car to her with considerable smoke coming from the clutch and the statement that it had "burned out" while trying to come up a ramp. The dealership claims abuse caused the clutch to fail and crack the flywheel in three places and warranty for the flywheel was denied. We have owned more than six standard transmission automobiles over our more than 3 0 years of driving experience and have never had a clutch fail other than the 2 failures in less than six months with this Volkswagen. Internet research informs us that this is a very prevalent problem with Volkswagens. Clearly the dual mass flywheel is defective in this vehicle and the clutch is in general prone to very premature failure.

49 Clutch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/30/2006

After about 22,000 miles the engine started losing power, and the clutch started making noises and vibrations upon engaging/disengaging. The first time it happened we were driving on the interstate, so the loss of power was really dangerous. The dealership replaced the whole flywheel and clutch assembly.

50 Clutch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 11/27/2006

1. 2006 vw Jetta tdi 5-speed: clutch filed to operate at 18,000 miles, slipping & burning 2. 2006 vw Jetta tdi 5-speed: clutch and dual mass flywheel failed at 18,000 miles 3. Dealer replace at cost of $2,500. Dealer stated not covered under warranty, filed complaint with vw of America. Damaged parts available for inspection.

51 Clutch problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 10/10/2006

Volkswagen Jetta tdi. Was running fine and I was very happy with the vehicle. During a routine stop at a stop sign I pushed in the clutch, a large clunking noise occurred and the clutch pressed all the way to the floor and would not return to normal position. Vehicle had 62,000 miles on it, thus manufacturers warranty expired. Extended service warranty (obtained when vehicle was purchased new) covered towing and initially investigation until they discovered the damage was due to the clutch -- a 'wearable' item. Apparently the clutch plate had been rubbing against the transmission, unseeable until the transmission was taken out of the vehicle. I took the vehicle in for all scheduled maintenances with a Volkswagen service center and they never inspected the clutch, nor is damage caused by the clutch or the clutch assembly covered in either the original manufacturers warranty or the extended warranty. I believe if it is a 'wearable' item it should be part of the standard service program (which is quite expensive for Volkswagen vehicles) or it should be covered under warranty.

52 Clutch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/29/2006

Traveling in stop and go traffic on an upgrade toward george washington bridge. I stepped on clutch to shift but could not. The clutch pedal was nailed to the floor. I coasted into a gas station and turned off engine. The smell of clutch burning was very pronounced. The vw roadside assistance would not tow me anywhere but to the nearest dealer or anywhere else for that matter unless under 15 miles. I would have to pay for any towing beyond that. The car was ultimately towed to the dealer from whom the car was purchased. Vwoa covered the replacement clutch only as a courtesy one time. They said the clutch was not covered by the warranty. I had the car for one week. It had 289 miles total! I am concerned that the vehicle is not actually fixed and that vwoa knows the clutch assembly is inadequate for the car. The old parts are not available as far as I know. I am not sure at this time what parts other than the clutch plate and flywheel were replaced.

53 Clutch problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/28/2006

1. Turned onto an off ramp and came to a stop 2. Clutch would not disengage, car towed to dealership 3. Awaiting diagnostics to determine manufacturer or driver responsibility.

54 Clutch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/18/2006

I had to come to a complete stop to not rear end a car that was not moving. When I put on the brakes so forcefully, it apparently messed up my transmission and clutch. I couldn't get my car into gear. I had to have the car towed to vw of van nuys where the service agent said it was my fault that the clutch was burnt out, even though I only had 7500 miles on the car. After researching this problem on the internet, it appears to be a problem with this car regarding the clutch. I was able to talk the dealership into covering this with my warranty but felt it's important to let you guys know because I'm not the only one who is having this problem.

55 Clutch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/05/2006

2006 Volkswagen Jetta tdi with 12,469 miles had complete clutch failure. Center of the clutch was completely blown out. Volkswagen replaced as we were only 469 miles over warranty but upon investigation there seems to be a design flaw in the clutch which Volkswagen will not acknowledge.

56 Clutch problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/11/2006

2003 vw Jetta clutch and flywheel out at 47,962 miles. I am an experienced manual transmission driver. This is not my fault, and this is very premature for a clutch failure. The dealership wants $2088. 00 plus tax for parts and labor. My dealership quoted me at $1400 back home, but im stuck in colorado waiting for the customer care to get back to me. Every independent mechanic I have talked to including vw certified; but not affiliated have told me that even the worst clutch -rider(which I am not) would have clutch failure at about 100,000 miles. Vw is too cheap to submit a recall for the clutch assemblies on their 2000-2004 vehicles. With the volume of complaints all over the web and even on this site, there is no doubt in my mind that there is a serious problem that needs to be addressed, and im not just speaking about the extremely outrageous replacement and repair costs. Plus! they now use non- re-surface flywheels. . .

57 Clutch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/25/2006

The clutch on my 2006 vw Jetta tdi has started to fail. The car has 43,000 highway miles on it. I have read several complaints on the clutch failing on 2006's due to not being built heavy enough to withstand the additional torque of the new tdi engine. Lujak's vw in davenport, IA told me the repair would cost $1300 to $2500 and that generally speaking vw will not warranty this problem after 12,000 miles.

58 Clutch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/20/2006

Clutch flywheel problems with my 2006 Jetta tdi. Left me stranded on highway with only 41 k miles on it. The vehicle is in the shop and under review. I'm concerned over the number of clutch failures at such low mileage. I am very gentle with my clutch.

59 Clutch problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/12/2006

I was driving and depressed the clutch in my car, at which time I felt a snap and I could no longer change gears. It began working again about forty minutes later, but would not shift gears at times. The dealer said that the clutch pressure plate was not releasing properly and that I needed to replace the entire clutch assembly including the flywheel, and that this is not a warranty item, even though my car has only 35000 miles and is under warranty for more than 70000 miles. This repair is quoted to cost me over 2000 dollars.

60 Clutch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/24/2006

The clutch on my husbands 2006 Jetta tdi is going out. It only has 44, 000 miles on it. He has owned six manual transmission cars in the past, never having to replace a clutch in less than 110,000 and even then it was not the clutch worn out but the throw out bearing fell apart. We have done several searches on the internet on vw tdi clutches. One thing we found out is that this is a common problem with 2005. 5 and early 2006. Vw of europe has issued recalls on the 2006 passat tdi only sold overseas. I believe that the same clutch was used in the early 2006 Jettas. Audi has issued a recall on there a3 with the tdi engine that was produced from June of 2003 till the end of 2004. On 6/24/2005 the los angeles times reports that vw is recalling 44,000 of its touran vans worldwide to fix a clutch problem. I have found several complaints on www. Uk-mkiv. Net where the golf and Jetta are referred to as mkv or the 5th edition and on www. Audi-sport. Net for the Audi a3 tdi and on www. Tdiclub. . Read more...

61 Clutch problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/20/2006

While driving in slow road repair traffic on i90 near kirtland/mentor ohio, my clutch system failed. Was driving just fine keeping car in 1st gear and at a stop in stop and go traffic when suddenly the car was staying in gear even when removing foot from clutch pedal. Clutch pedal was stuck in full down position. -- could not easily shift gears or get car out of gear once this problem occurred, and was forced to keep starting and shutting off the engine for approx. 2 miles until I could exit. My car had to be towed to classic vw on tyler blvd in mentor. Have been told it is the clutch master and slave cylinders must be replaced and then the brake lines must be bled and refilled. Repair costs will be between $700 and $1000.

62 Clutch problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/06/2006

I am the original owner of a 2004 vw Jetta gli (vr6), purchased in fall '04. The car was delivered off the truck at the time of purchase (never driven by other customers). It currently has 37,100 highway miles on it. I am a previous owner of a '03 vw Jetta gli and traded it in (47k mi. ) for my current car. Both vehicles have a manual transmission. On 6/6/06, I experienced serious problems shifting gears. The car started to rev, even though I was methodically letting the clutch out, shifting accordingly, to see if I could troubleshoot. Unfortunately after 4 mi. , each subsequent gear started breaking-I could no longer shift into 2nd, then 3rd, up to 6th. Then reverse failed. Smoke also came up from under the hood with a fuel smell. I took my car to an authorized vw dealer (still under warranty) & the original diagnosis (without removing the transmission) was the clutch had completely failed. It is clear there is a manufacturing issue with the vw clutches. They should not fail at 37k mi. The dealership stated that it could be from normal wear-tear or "user error". I'm not new to driving manual; I have been driving stick shift for about 10 years. To have a car that is driven primarily (80% of travel) on the highway have clutch failure is unfathomable. Additionally, I had the 30k maintenance completed & there was no indication of clutch problems. While waiting for final diagnosis for the failure, I conducted research & found this is not an usual problem with vws or vw corporation. According to vw owners, the clutches are failing starting at 19k mi. , even after not driving the car hard. This is unacceptable & for the company to know this is a common issue, costing owners thousands in repairs & subsequent bills, endangering people who are driving during failure (without any warning lights from the car), to not cover such issues under warranty, & automatically default the problem being "user error" is unethical & unsafe.

63 Clutch problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/23/2006

My 2004 Jetta had to have the flywheel, pressure plate and clutch replaced at 32,000 miles. Vw would not cover the cost of these repairs as they said it was due to driver error and it was not covered under warranty. They also stated that I must be driving the car down the freeway with the clutch pushed in. I have driven manual transmission cars for 20 plus years, have never driven the way vw states and have never had a clutch go out on me.

64 Clutch problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/20/2006

: the contact stated while proceeding from a traffic light the clutch shattered. The dealer determined the vehicle was no longer under warranty and offered repairs at cost. The contact researched complaints for the year, make and model of the vehicle and there were a high number of complaints relating to a shattered clutch. The contact expressed there should be a recall.

65 Clutch problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/14/2006

Clutch problems on Jetta 2000. Clutch failed on me why driving on the FL turnpike on Saturday 14, 2006. I was at the toll plaza and when I left my car went into gear as normal, when I put it in 4th gear I heard the engine rev high but my car began to slow down. I coasted off the first exit I saw and luckily, kept coasting right into an apartment complex. I called the dealership I bought the car from and they sent out a tow company to pick my car up. On Monday, may 15, 2006 I received a phone call from esserman International and I was told by the service dept that I had somehow activated the anti-theft on my car and they had disabled it and it was fixed. When I went to pick up my car, I was told that my car was not safe to drive because when they took my car to get washed the clutch failed again. I was told it was either the transmission or the clutch. Turns out they are charging me 1800 dollars because the clutch needs to replaced, which is not covered under their warranty.

I now own a 2005. 5 new body style Jetta tdi with just under 15,000 miles on it and in 5th I can feel the clutch slipping at times which I feel is un-acceptable. And yes I do know how to drive a manual diesel, tdi and non-tdi.

67 Clutch problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/17/2006

While entering the interstate and upshifting into 5th gear, the clutch was depressed. The clutch stuck to the floor of the vehicle causing the vehicle to lose all transmission function. The vehicle coasted to the side of the road and was towed to the dealer. The dealer determined the failure was due to the clutch disc which disintegrated and was not covered since it was considered a wear item. The manufacturer was alerted and no repairs were made so the owner then paid to make the repairs, even though the vehicle was still under warranty.

68 Clutch problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/06/2006

: the contact stated while driving 50mph and approaching a yield, the clutch was depressed. The clutch stuck to the floor of the vehicle causing the vehicle to loose all transmission function. The vehicle coasted to the side of the road and was towed to the dealer. The dealer determined the transmission failure was due to driver error. The vehicle was then towed to an independent repair shop for further inspection. The repair shop personnel determined the flywheel had broken causing the clutch pressure plate to break. The manufacturer was alerted and no repairs were made.

69 Clutch problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/24/2006

Early clutch failure. We just replaced the clutch on 2002 Jetta at 51,000 miles. She owned other manual transmission cars and did not replace the clutch this early with one exception, a Volkswagen, fox. Was this a pattern, maybe .

70 Clutch problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/21/2006

While I drove car the clutch started to slip in 2004 Jetta. I took it to heritage Volkswagen in union city georgia, and they said that they adjusted the clutch. The clutch still slips. If I pull out in front of a car and need to get out of the way the car does not go because the clutch slips. This is extremely dangerous. Thousands of others have the same problem. The problem is still not fixed by the dealer. They say that the clutch is error on the driver. This cannot be because the clutch with the engine can only handle 8 more feet-lbs than the engine produces. If the engine, therefore, produces a couple more horse power for whatever reason the clutch slips. Im not talking about any modifications to the car I am talking about every stock car will vary in hp and torque even though they say they are all the same. This is ridiculous, and now am scared to drive my car longer than 30 minutes for fear that the clutch will slip and I will get hit from behind and die.
