On June 21, 2020 while driving down a paved flat road my passenger side front coil spring snapped. I did not hit any bumps. The part was not rusty and did not show any signs of wear. I had the part replaced. Yesterday, August 3, 2020, the driver side front coil spontaneously snapped while backing out of a paved flat parking spot. Again there does not appear to be any rust, rot, or wear on the spring. The spot where each has broken is very clean.

The passenger side front suspension coil spring broke during cold weather while turning off the road to a store parking lot. Did not drive through any potholes or similar things that would stress the spring. Earlier this year, in March, the front driver side spring also broke in cold weather while pulling into a driveway.
The front suspension coil rings have failed twice in 18 month. The break causing danger and non drive-ability.
Front driver side coil spring snapped while turning and backing up from driveway. Mileage is $73k. To replace the spring at the vw-certified dealer was $1100.

While will driving 70 mph on I-96, left front strut/coil/dampener failed , the coil spring became partially offset and separated laterally from the remaining portion of the coil. The portion of the coil offset began rubbing on the front tire sidewall. Fortunately, I was located 5-7 miles from home and my local vehicle repair shop. A dangerous and potentially very dangerous development. See attached images. .

My right front coil spring snapped due to a defective spring. I opened my car door and sat in my car and heard a loud bang. It turned out that 1/2 of a coil snapped off of my right front spring. It looks like rust was not an issue and the spring was defective and failed. I'm glad I was not driving when this happened. I have contacted vwoa to notify them of the failure and am asking them to repair the part at no cost to me even though the car is out of warranty.

While pulling to a stop at the end of my street I heard a loud bang. After getting out and inspecting the vehicle I noticed the right front spring had broken. I have not hit anything that would cause the spring to break. I am puzzled as to why this happened on a car with only 78,000 miles. The repair shop says this is the 6th Jetta or golf they have seen with this problem in the last few months. The car is a 2003 vw Jetta tdi. I am now out $450 to replace the springs?.
Conditions: normal driving, approximately 25 miles per hour on a city street. Failure: front left drivers side coil spring fractured through. The left corner of the car dropped, the car jerked suddenly to the left. This would have been catastrophic at highway speeds or if other vehicles were present. Vehicle is not safe to drive in it's current state due to the left corner being not level, spring missing part of it's length, steering (strut) binding. Corrective actions: Volkswagen of America will not replace the defective part and is not interested in the potential life safety concerns regarding this failure. I directly contacted the o. E. M. Spring manufacturer (eibach). This may result in a replacement of the defective spring and failure analysis of the part, to be determined.

I purchased a 2000 vplkswagen Jetta in the year 2002, pre-owned. I have had nothing but problems with it since I bought it, and now am trading it in, and taking a $3000 loss. Here is a list of the problems I have had in the last 2 years listed from first problems to most recent:
1. Window tray broke, window fell into the door. $300
2. Trunk latch broke, had to get replaced $50
3. Sunroof broke, would not move and needed the entire thing replaced including the motor. $1800
4. Water pump leaked out all coolant, needed to be replaced $ 600
5. Strut coil snaped in half while driving, needed to replace both sides $500
6. Lastly, (this is the point when I decided to file a complaint and trade the car in for another brand) water leaking from the electrical panel on top of inside roof. Sunroof then malfunctioned, opening when the car was started and the knob was not touched. Had to pay to disconnect power sunroof. Whatever you do, please, do not buy a vw Jetta. That is unless you want to have it continually in the shop and having to spend a lot of money on repairs.
