Purchased used 2002 vw Jetta 1. 8 turbo (5 speed) with 34,000 miles still under warranty. Taken to dealership for blown fuses (cigarette lighter), trunk latch, center console, and transmission repairs. Fuse problem was ongoing. Within a few months, a local mechanic installed a small boost gauge on the dash, which was wired into a 10 amp fuse. Within five days, the car was being backed out of the driveway when smoke began pouring from all the dash vents. The wire harness, fuse block, and controller components located behind the dash were destroyed by fire. Vw of America prepared to send investigators to nm, but when they discovered gauge wiring may have contributed, they did not investigate. Have read of other electrical fires behind instrument panel, dash, since this time. Our son was driving the car at the time of the fire, but was able to get out.

My car started to clunk and jerk when I was turning corners. It started just clunking once and got worse and worse within the same day. It would jerk going down the highway. I was on my way to the dealership when it just quit. I couldn't accelerate or put it into gear. I got it off the road and had to push it into a parking lot until I could have it towed. It was towed to the dealership who later said my clutch and flywheel needed to be replaced. My car has less than 50,000 miles. They quoted me $1640. 00. That's ridiculous for that to go out so early. They told me it wouldn't be covered under the warranty because it was normal wear and tear. I have driven manuals for years and have never had a problem. They said I was either "riding the clutch" or "driving hard". I started looking around and all the mechanics I talked to were very surprised it was out already and that is wasn't covered under warranty. I looked up this problem and found a ton of others who have had the same problem and told the same thing. Our clutches should not be going out this early.
The wrong transmission was placed in my car from the factory.

Problem with manual transmission not shifting into reverse; difficult to shift into and out of reverse and second gear, forcing you to double clutch to enable shifting. Ticking sound when in reverse. This resulted in chipped and pitted reverse idle gear and gear teeth missing. Also, shifter lever vibrating, becoming loose and eventually breaking off. Vehicle also recalled for a fire protective shield in the right rear wheel housing. Vehicle in shop for over a month due to litigation with penn warranty corp. Refusing to repair, stating damage was due to driver misuse.

The clutch on my 03' vw Jetta has been failing since day one , I now have 42,000 kms. When I bought the car. Reverse, second gear and third gear all have problems. This problem has been going on with every person with a manual Jetta, especially a 1. 8t. I think vwoa should recall the clutch and transmission and correct this problem. We spend hard earned money on our cars and do not deserve a problem like this on brand new cars.

My vehicle often will not shift into reverse. I have a manual transmission, and it will shift into the other gears, but often upon starting the vehicle, it will not go into reverse.
Pin in transmission coming out, causing leak, replaced transmission/clutch disk, pressure plate and throwout bearings. Vw honor warranty because I was second owner. Original warranty 100,000 or 5yrs. Dealer stated they never saw a pin worked its way out that way. They thought vw should have covered problem. Milleage at time 68,299 .

I'm on 3rd transmission on my 2003 Jetta tdi wagon in less than one year. Original plus two failures replaced.
Problems with rear window defogger and transmission. Rear defogger didn't turn off. Consumer feared it would cause an electrical hazard. Transmission locked and wouldn't move to reverse. Transmission was repaired and failed again. Consumer was informed a new transmission and clutch was installed. On the day of purchase, consumer complained of the problem but the salesman stated he wasn't use to a manual transmission and ignored it.
I have a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta. On March 24, 2003 Monday morning I was driving with in the city in san ramon, CA and suddenly with a noise my car stopped. My engine won't start at all after that and in the end I had to call aaa to tow my car. Aaa towed my car to the nearest auto center, where after the complete inspection "bob auto tech" told me that the crank shaft of my car was broken. I was shocked and surprised to hear that, and I could not believe that. My car is only 4 years old, and has always been taken care of by me by regular servicing and oil change and always at vw authorized dealerships/workshops. I ended up paying up bills worth $3194. 82 from my pocket as it was not covered by the insurance also. I would kindly request you to look into the matter and help me with my distress and financial pain.
I own a 2003 vw Jetta. I bought it on 09/02. Since then I have had a variety of problems. First it was my electrical. By brake lights stayed on and the key less remote did not work I could not lock my car and non of the interior and exterior lights worked. I took this problem to vw and the said that I needed to make an appontment before they would help me. So I had to drive home with all these problems and make my appt. This problem was fixed however occasionaly the brake lights still stay stuck on. This was also noted to vw. The second time I took my car in for a rattle in my clutch. I was told I would need to take my car on a test drive with a customer service rep (?). So I did and she stated she did not here anything and I told here that when I take the clutch out it does rattles very loud but when I push the clutch in the rattle stops. Customer service rep stated since she did not here this she could not let the actual tech look at it. I demanded the tech to look at it. Finally the tech and customer service rep told me I had a rattle in my clutch due to my bald tires. ???? since I did need new tires, I replaced all 4. My clutch still rattled. (shocker) I then decided to take my vw to another vw service dealer, and they determined that the rattle was a loose heat plate. Vw dealer stated this was fixed. The next day this rattle was still there. I have taken this car in for a total of 3 times for this rattle. I have decided on getting a new non-vw car. Not only has the car dissappointed me but the servcie poeple have treated me and my husband like ignorant consumers. On each of these visits to the vw dealer they have ahd to keep my car for numerous days, and never was I able to receive a rental, which resulted in me missing work and costing me more money. *.
Clutch. It was becoming increasingly dificult to shift into 1st and reverse so I took my car to a dealership who said they could not find a problem. A few days later it was nearly impossible to shift into 1st and I took it back to the dealership, they then told me they thought it was a problem with 1st gear. After taking the tranmission apart and fixing 1st gear they test drove it they said the problem was again not fixed and that my transmission was now in essence eating itself up. I then had my entire transmission replaced because each tooth in the gears and rods were bent or damaged in some way. In the end, they said my transmission must have been defective. To my knowledge there have been no changes in the transmissions and my replacment is the same as all the other Jettas.
Consumer noticed failure in the trip tonic manual and automatic transmission. Dealer has been notified. Please provide further information. Ts.
Consumer states when parked on an incline and the key in the ignition, and the vehicle idling, the vehicle will slip out of park and start to roll back. Contacted dealer.

My first and second gears have been sporadically grinding ever since I bought the car. Three times they refused to fix it because they haven't heard it. Fourth time they heard it, but wouldn't fix it because they didn't hear it when I returned for the service.
After driving for a while vehicle will not shift from 1st to 2nd gear . This never happens at first start.

Vehicle runs out of oil every 1500 miles, and the transmission is very jerky. Windshield wipers were streaking because wipers were separating. Instrument panel cup holder loose on tight side. The stick shift vibrates in 3rd gear due to selector shaft failure.
The transmission pops out of 5th gear unexpectedly ussually at speeds over 50 mph. This leads to a sudden loss of acceleration and could lead to panic and a loss of control.
I have had this serviced before, and still having problems.
First incident with gear shifter happened in March 1999 when it popped out of first, third and fifth gear while driving. The gear shifter rattled immensely. The second time, it had been hard to get into first and third gear and was popping out of first gear in particular. Prior to having the car fixed, it was parked in my driveway during a storm. The car popped out of gear and rolled down my driveway into a tree. Volkswagen adjusted the shifter (which they adjusted incorrectly in the first place). The third time, (which is now) it's very difficult to get it in first gear.
