Volkswagen Jetta owners have reported 610 problems related to power train (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volkswagen Jetta based on all problems reported for the Jetta.
Internal component on transmission has failed, vehicle is available for inspection (niello Volkswagen has already confirmed). The vehicle shakes when shifting which could potentially cause an accident. Yes, niello Volkswagen confirmed the issue. Dealer for manufacturer has confirmed issue. No vehicle warning or lights or messages, check engine light didn't trigger. Dealership attempted to "flash" transmission and ecm which made the issue worse.

My vehicle has the mechatronic failure that the recall is open for some 13’ Jetta hybrids but I don’t have an open recall for it. The car would start shutting on and off constantly at stop lights instead of staying off running soley on battery power. The error codes are pointing to a failure to maintain fluid pressure inside the mechatronics unit. The mechatronics unit is included in a vw recall from June 2021. There was a design flaw in the housing that caused transmission fluid to lead out under pressure. My vehicle should be included in the recall but since I don’t have an open recall for this to my vehicle I can’t get it fixed and repairs are to expensive for something vw should own up for this mistake but they won’t repair it.

When the 8-speed automatic transmission attempts to shift from 3rd to 4th gear it will slip into neutral causing the engine to redline at maximum rpm. The accelerator pedal does not function and poses a serious safety issue. The vehicle will unexpectedly stall when the auto start stop is used and intermittently requires you to shift into park and restart the engine. The transmission also has difficulty shifting into reverse and puts the vehicle in neutral until it slams into gear.

At 80k, the dsg transmission failed and at my expense paid to get a new transmission installed. Today, at 155k, the new replaced transmission failed again. So every 75k, the transmission fails with the following: hairline cracks can develop within the transmission electronic gearbox (mechatronic unit), causing an internal transmission oil leak and a decrease in oil pressure. Transmission can not be fixed and must be replaced. Cost for a new transmission is over $8k.
I am writing this complaint in recognition of the 34j6 recall for the 2013 - 2015 vw Jetta hybrid. The vehicle has only 62k miles on it and the transmission suddenly failed. The vehicle was parked at an ice cream shop and after entering it to drive away, it would not move and a wrench came up on the dashboard. It was then towed to a vw dealer and they quoted approximately $20,000 for a new transmission. Vw dealer also said this vehicle was not covered under the 34j6 recall, though the failure symptoms are exactly as outline in the NHTSA's repair and recall document. We also contacted vw corporate and they told me to request good will through the dealer. They offered to then fix the car for $11,000. That price is also ridiculous. We denied paying those costs and towed the car to a private residence where it is sitting in the garage. The vw dealer charged us $205. 36 for diagnostics. Safety was put at risk, as the transmission suddenly failed without warning and could have caused a serious incident. I am writing this on behalf of a family member who owns the vehicle and I am taking care this vehicle's issues. I found multiple complaints of dealers doing this to customers, so I decided to file a complaint with the NHTSA. The recall should be expanded to all vehicles, there are only 7,000+ units, this is nothing for vw ag. The only warning light that came up was a yellow wrench.

The contact owns a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while accelerating from idling, the vehicle jolted with the check engine, abs, and tire pressure monitoring system warning lights illuminated. Additionally, while driving approximately 40-45 mph, the vehicle began decelerating to approximately 30 mph. The contact pulled to the side of the road and inspected the vehicle but could not identify the cause of the failure. The vehicle was driven, and the contact became aware that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. After waiting for a while, the electrical power returned but the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic however, the mechanic was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The mechanic suggested that the transmission might be the cause of the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 87,000.

With no warning, the transmission/mechatronics unit in this 2015 Jetta hybrid, reported an error code. This "error" results in the car not being able to enter the hybrid (electric motor) mode when asked for by driver. Also, the car no longer goes into stop/start mode when stopped (engine cycles on and off). Car thus failed state inspection due to error code. Dealer tested and found code "p0841". Dealer reported failure in power train, needing a full replacement at over $7,000 cost. Review with VIN shows not within a recall which was offered for this model. Yet failure seems to be same as that which led to recall on same models. Dealer cannot verify the actual fault w/out a full tear down, which they don't want to do. Thus, they suggest a full replacement of transmission and control module (mechatronics). I feel the car should be repaired by manufacturer.

The contact owns a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated while driving 25 mph and attempting to merge into another lane, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle hesitated to respond. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred while driving. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 52,000.
The contact owns a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle unintendedly downshifted into neutral (n). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 09v333000 (power train). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 159,900.

Vehicle at 40,000 miles needs a clutch repair. I have owned a standard vehicle my whole life and never had this issue. Looking online there are tons of reports of others having the same issue and Volkswagen not saying there is an issue.
So it appears to be fine until about 30/45 mins drive time then it starts shifting/slamming real hard and hesitates to shift in the next gear to the point where stopping and going isn’t an option or it slips after about 45 mins all the prnds lights turned on and did the same in manual mode. . I read someone it’s a valve body that leads to a faulty tranny I’ve read almost 150 of the same exact accounts on here and reddit with the same 2006 vw Jetta 2. 5 it’s too common of an issue most of them were under 100k miles and never dealt with by the manufacturer myself my car has roughly 168k miles and I’ve been working to fix it up I just got it a month or so ago and now I have to deal with this honestly is sad that vw hasn’t been held accountable for an issue that is way too common to not be their fault. I understand the car is almost 20 years old but a bunch of these accounts I were reading dated as far back as 2009 with 86k miles it’s a shame. .

Ignition system (available for inspection upon request) malfunctioned, which disallowed the engine from starting. After multiple attempts, the engine started and I was able to drive and indicate turns, but there was no dashboard display such as speed, gas level, etc. Since the first incident, this has happened 3 times. At one point while driving with no screen display, I forgot to turn off the option for the engine to stop when the car has come to a complete stop. When I stopped at a light, the engine stopped and I was unable to get it to start again for several minutes, causing me to block traffic. There was no warning prior to the failure, just beeping and a screen notification while it was failing. The problem has not been replicated/confirmed, and the vehicle has not been inspected since the issue began to happen. Each time this failure happens, it is during a hot day after the car has been parked in direct sunlight.
The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while pressing the brake pedal the vehicle suddenly shut off and and began to roll backwards causing a second vehicle crashed into the rear passenger side door. No injuries were reported. A police report was taken at the scene and the vehicle was driven away. The cause of the failure was not determined. The contact indicated that after the vehicle was service under a manufacturers campaign the vehicle had randomly shut off on several occasions and after restarting the engine the vehicle would operate as normal. No further information was available. The manufacturer was notified of the failures but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 149,000.
I purchased vehicle 12/06/2022 and day after purchase check engine light went off. Took it back to dealer ash auto and they stated they fixed it. 2 months later check engine light again. Got a diagnostic test and codes were tbi base gasket, p01106 manifold and 01314-013 engine control module. Now one week ago dropping off daughter to work down the street and when pulled into garage my vehicle will not go I to park. Only neutral, reverse and drive work. Have to keep car in neutral with emergency brake to keep parked.
The transmission of the 2015 vw Jetta hybrid failed at about 81,000 miles. The transmission began to behave erradically while it was idling, with the engine coming on and off every 5 seconds. The check engine light and epc lights illuminated. I was able to get the vehicle to an auto parts store to check the codes. The codes that came back indicated that there was transmission related issues. Unfortunately the vehicle did not start again when I was ready to leave the auto part store and I had to tow it to the dealership. The local dealership indicated that there was metal fines in the transmisison fluid. Their workflow indicated that the transmission was shot. Please note that vw replaced the mechatronic unit of this transmission in 2019 at nearly 43. 000 miles and there's a recall on transmissions for this vehicle's model. However, the VIN of my vehichle was not included in the recall. We were grateful that the transmission begin to fail while we were in a large city, as we had traveled 8 hours already the day the transmission failed.
Hill assist system creates dangerous situations because it prevents me from moving right away while pulling out in traffic or in front of traffic lights, out of parking garages and stop signs. Hill assist system often stalls the engine due to holding brakes engaged for an extended period of time even on a slight hill. With a manual transmission this makes it even worse because engine dies in these situations frequently. Dealer dismisses the issue because "there are no fault codes", but if it was manufactured incorrectly and/or calibrated improperly, no error/fault codes will come on. I have been driving manual transmissions all my life (from motorcycles to semi trucks) for over 40 years and it's clear to me that this vehicle is a safety concern with underpowered engine that cannot overcome hill assist. Other hill assist systems immediately disengage the brakes when an accelerator pedal is pressed. In this vehicle, the brake stays on and vehicle dies on even on a slightest hill. Please help investigate.

The engine light on my 2015 vw Jetta hybrid was enabled and my car stuttered and stopped while idling at stop lights, and in some cases projected my car forward slightly while pressing the brake. I brought my vehicle for diagnosis and was told that the cause was failure from the mechatronics unit and that my car should essentially be scrapped since they cannot locate a replacement part. I understand that this is a significant safety issue as the engine can simply stop working at any time. I have learned that my VIN was included in the NHTSA recall 19v-866 for the "interim repair" portion of the recall, but it was not included in the "part 573" final remedy portion of the recall, which included a corrective action to "install a mechatronic unit repair kit". As my VIN number was somehow removed from the second step of this recall, it has now posed a significant safety issue. I have read a similar complaint on this site that was posted in February of this year for this same issue and car model. I completely concur with that consumer that more investigation on this recall needs to be done to allow for additional vins to be included in this recall. I believe my vehicle should have been included in the repair portion of this recall - which may have been an error on the part of vw.
At ~44,000, in a vehicle we bought 3 months earlier from offleaseonly, the clutch burned out and the car ceased forward propulsion on a deserted country road driven by a very experienced manual car driver who had not burned through a clutch in his driving career. There were no warning lights. It put three people at risk. Offleaseonly - had done a full inspection and stood behind their sale by paying for the new clutch assembly. The clutch and associated mechanism was fully replaced by 12/17/2021 by niello vw. Vehicle was driven from January - August by same driver. There were occasional clutch burning smells but mechanical inspection did not reveal any issue. The car was not driven regularly from sept - March 2023. Prior to our daughter driving it starting at the end of March, we had it reviewed by a local mechanic who found no issues with the vehicle. At ~54,000 miles, on may 10, the vehicle was being driven on us hwy 280 between san carlos and redwood city, CA. Suddenly, the vehicle would not shift and would not go above 40 mph. The very new driver was able to successfully maneuver to the shoulder and bring the car to a stop. Her safety was definitely at risk as 280 is a congested, fast moving highway where the average speed is 75 mph. The clutch was burning. Ca hwy patrol pulled the car to a park in woodside where it was collected by a flatbed and brought to boardwalk vw. Once again, the clutch is completely burned out. Boardwalk vw is tearing down the transmission to see if there is a cause for the multiple clutch burnouts. We have multiple manual vehicles - this is only happening with the vw Jetta. I’ve driven manual cars since 1987 and this has never happened with any of them. We are awaiting boardwalk vw assessment of the cause. There were no warning lights. There were no symptoms of the problem until the car ceased to operate. Both times, we have brought the car to a vw dealer for inspection and repair.
Vehicle can be shut off even when gear shifter is not in p position.
When coming to a stop, a wrench appeared where the gear indicator was, and a service hybrid system message appeared. When attempting to accelerate after stopping, the vehicle did not move. After turning the car off and back on it was able to move again. This has occured on multiple occasions.
Timing chain failure on highway nearly causing serious accident. Vw will not cover repair. Timing chain failure is a common issue on these cars and is a safety hazard.
While driving in the morning rush hour my vehicle lost power. As I pushed on the accelerator the vehicle did not speed up and maxed out at 40 mph. I was not able to keep up with the speed limit or traffic and I pulled over to the shoulder to get out of traffic so that I did not cause an accident. Dealer confirmed that my transmission had gone out. The check engine light came on.
The car was driving fine then began to slow down on its own. I would press on the gas but it was not accelerating properly. The engine light came on and another light. The car just died and I was trying to get off the road and to a shoulder. Stuck on the road. Car was dead. I tried to move it. Then I went back to car and restarted it. It did start enough to get me off the road. I took it straight to the dealer and they said it would cost $10,000 to fix because it's a hybrid. They called it transmission troubles. It is in process of failing.
The power window never works the way it is suppose to, when I row my window down it messes with the speakers for some reason, my wipes don't work all the time and freeze easy. When driving does nor like to shift out of 1st it's got that mk shifter, it will stay in first gear unless the gas is pressed and released fast also can smell like a burnt wire or/ candle was smell. When I try to put the air on the smell becomes worse.

2015 Volkswagen Jetta hybrid sel premium with less than 60,000 miles has multiple error codes for transmission and vw dealership/service shop advised only solution is to replace the transmission. Apparently my VIN is not included in NHTSA recall 19v866000 (certain 2013-2015 Jetta hybrid vehicles equipped with a dq200 7-speed dsg automatic transmission) but based on the current situation I believe it should have been. It is my understanding that this situation presents a major safety issue. I bought this vehicle certified pre-owned from a vw dealership and have put just over 10k miles on it in the three (3) years I have owned it. Without the excessive cost of replacing the transmission, which was damaged through no fault of my own, the car is worth "maybe $100 for scrap" per the dealership/service shop. This appears to be a fairly prevalent issue and I implore you to investigate further. I am confident additional vins should be included in the recall, perhaps with transmissions built by subcontractors other than the one at issue in recall 19v866000, but still (clearly) not properly constructed.
For the Volkswagen Jetta hybrid 2013-2015 units, a safety recall 34j6 was issued to service transmission issues that caused powertrain failure. The problem is caused by hairline fractures in the accumulator that cause insufficient transmission oil pressure (my vehicle is showing codes that this is the case). Recently, my 2014 vw Jetta hybrid has been experiencing issues as described by the 34j6 recall. My car would lose powertrain capabilities at stoplights or if I was slowing down. It would also occasionally stop and start when it was supposed to be idling. The dealership has confirmed that my accumulator is the issue, however, my VIN number is allegedly not affected by this recall. Can an investigation be put forth to determine if this recall can be extended to be more inclusive of VIN batches that it is affecting?.
The car would turn on for 2 seconds and turn off for 2 second in a continuous cycle when stationary. The car is available for inspection upon request. Yes the problem has been confirmed by heritage Volkswagen and they updated the software recall. . . But the damage is already beyond repair. $10,000 to repair. There were not any warning lamps, messages, just the above symptoms. This started about 5 days ago. Took it to a local auto shop and they said there was an ev when the performed the diagnostics. Would have to take it to the dealership to get it fixed. That day I made an appointment with the dealership for the following morning at 7:30 a. M.
Driving on the interstate, my spouse stated that the car just lost power. Fortunately, he was able to pull off. But once he tried to start the car, it wouldn't do anything. The car was towed to my home. We took the car to the local vw dealer to have the recall completed. Since the car had to be towed there, we were told that we would have to pay $500 for a diagnostic before anything can be completed. I took the car to a local repairman and he stated that the fuel pump was bad. We replaced it and the battery. The car now will not start at all. We are getting an error of "hybrid system failure", "air bag failure", epc light is on and transmission warning. The car tries to start but will not.
Car suddenly losses its power and stops, and I have to turn off the car and turn on again to drive. It happens in small roads and in highways that causes very dangerous situations. No check engine or issues shown.
2010 Jetta, manual transmission key gets stuck in ignition and wont cut car off. Eventually got key out, ignition locked wont let key turn car on. This is a known vw issue with over 860 complaints on this exact issue between 2009-2013. Vw refuses to do recall, even though this is a manufacturing parts issue.
Jan 2023-check engine light for oil came on-just had oil change November 21, 2022 and only went 3000 miles. No oil in engine so it was topped off at a local volkswagon satellite and inspected for leaks no leaks found. Mid Feb 2023 had to put 2 quarts oil in car and high pitch noise/humming coming from car when driving. Mar 2023 went to vw dealership and explained noise and oil. They said noise was bad wheel bearings and it was ok to drive until backorder came in to replace. Was told the oil consumption is normal for vw despite us telling them it’s not normal consumption and they told us to read the owners manual. They couldn’t find leak, they topped it off and sent us on our way. April, may 2023 humming noise louder and a creaky, clanking, cricket chirp noise began and gear shifting became delayed. Made an appoint with vw dealership for June 2023 for wheel bearings to be replaced and told them about oil (we had to put 2 quarts in June)and new noise, and shifting. Wheel bearings are replaced, noise continued and they replaced front axle, different noise continued and now they are replacing transmission. They said they were going to prep car for oil consumption test but do not have my car back from the shop to drive it to determine the cause. Called sales to get quote on extended warranty as mine is about to expire in about 8000 miles. I was “told it is not an inexpensive car to warranty and was quoted $5749. 00 for a 4 yr 60k warranty (it’s in an email I have) my worry is “what else is going to break or even possibly hurt or kill my daughter”. This was her graduation present to get her through college and on her feet with a job. She attended undergrad out of state and now attending her graduate school out of state. 97% of her miles 62-64k are highway miles. She has kept up with all service requirements for her vehicle and has never been in an accident (carfax). All her records are in her car and can upload once we get her car back. Car is at sheehey vw.
The vehicle will constantly try to switch from gas engine to electric mode while at a stop causing transmission issues. Code that show are as follow: p0841 and p17bf.
The vehicle transmission will disengage while driving. Dealer stated entire transmission needed to be replaced.
Hit a pot hole in the road and vehicle completely shut down and will not crank. Diagnostic code u0100 is saying that the ecm and pcm are no longer communicating. If I had been on the highway or in a high traffic area that could have been a life threatening situation as everything is run through the electronics of the car.
Vehicle would not shift, obd2 code p037b "stuck in gear 6. " vehicle towed to a auto mechanic that said they spoke with vw dealer and confirmed it was a crack in the transmission and was undriveable. I have contacted vw who have said there are recalls for many transmissions of this Jetta but not for my VIN. I have also had issues with the clock spring (replaced) and an air bag sensor (malfunction light still on) and now the transmission. There are recalls for hybrid Jettas of this year but apparently not for my VIN. It seems like a large coincidence and feels like it should be investigated, especially considering the other issues vw was investigated for at this time of production.
