4 Power Window problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/10/2009

My driver's side window suddenly stopped working. I took it to a repair shop and the mechanic said that piece that holds the window in place was stretched and about to break. When I spoke with a friend who used to own a Jetta of the same year, make, and model as mine, he said that the same thing had happened to his vehicle. He said that there had been a recall on this part. When I checked the NHTSA's web site, however, I could not find this recall. The consumer had problems with the engine and the sterring column was defective. The engine light illuminated right after the vehicle was purchased. Updated 06/01/09.

5 Power Window problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

The clamps on the front driver's side window of my 2003 vw Jetta detached leaving the window stuck closed.

6 Power Window problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/21/2008

I bought an 2003 vw Jetta wolfsberg on Jan. 17th, 2007. I was driving on an interstate and hit a bump and the right passenger window fell into the door panel. I went to the dealer and they said they could fix but its out of warranty and I will be responsible for all charges. I called vw and they said there are no known defects or any pending at this time.

7 Power Window problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 01/09/2008

While traveling down the highway the drivers side window fell into the door. The call is undrivable in this condition as it is around 20 degrees outside and the car cannot be locked securely due to absence of window. The dealer wants to charge us $456 for a window regulator and motor.

8 Power Window problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/26/2007

I have 1998 vw Jetta--I presently have three electric windows which do not go up or down. Two of them have previously been repaired. This appears to be a defect or needed recall. Cause of problems is motors or regulators. These should be repaired by vw. Of all the vehicles I have owned in the past 40 years with electric windows I have never had a problems except with the vw Jetta.

10 Power Window problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/20/2007

The contact owns a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving 15 mph, the contact stated that the driver side window fell when she attempted to roll it down. The dealer stated that the regulator that holds the window in place cracked. The failure mileage was 7,455 and the current mileage was 7,500.

11 Power Window problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 06/10/2007

The windows in the doors are falling down and needing the mechanism replaced. This has happened to 3 of the doors so far. Has this been a problem-was there ever a recall for this-this seems like a weird thing to have happen. It is a safety issue because you cannot roll the window up or down, as well as the interior getting wet from the weather. Thank you. Rebecca.

12 Power Window problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/06/2007

I own a 1999. 5 Volkswagen Jetta iv GLS. There is a major problem with the window regulators and Volkswagen refuses to recall them. They know there is a problem as they have issued a 7-year extended warranty on the part. I have had to get the regulator replaced on my front passenger side window twice, due to window falling into door. This was under extended warranty. However my front driver side window (which I hardly ever use) has fallen into the door. I am now outside of the extended warranty period and the dealership is trying to charge me $500 to replace the regulator. I should not have to spend $500 I do not have on a part that is known and well documented to be faulty. This defective part poses several dangerous possibilities. For example I am currently driving with plastic where the window should be to secure the car from weather and intruders. I can hardly see through it; this is very dangerous, it is a huge blind spot. If there is an attacker I can not shut the window. I can not secure the car. If the weather was bad driving would be difficult. Sometimes the faulty regulators make the windows stuck closed. If there was a wreck someone could get trapped inside. Please put pressure on Volkswagen to do a full recall on this part. Everyone who has a recent Volkswagen has experienced the window regulator failure. It is irresponsible and negligent for Volkswagen not to recall this.

13 Power Window problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/14/2007

Girlfriend got into car on Wednesday morning to go to college. She shut the door and the snow had blocked her view through the rear window. So she hit the power window button to roll down front driver side window and the window fell down into the door and would not roll back up. She took the car to motorvation motorcars to have the window taped up until it could get fixed on fri. Temperature was frigid and this was very inconvenient. This had happened once before in oct. During heavy rains. Had no idea this was an occurring prob with more than one Jetta. Got on the internet and got curious to why this had happened twice and found this website. What if an infant child was restrained in rear seat going down the interstate when this happened. Problem should be handled app. At Volkswagens expense.

14 Power Window problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/11/2006

I have a 2003 Jetta wagon tdi, 3. 5 years old with 63k miles. I was driving in a narrow residential street with my windows down. I began to raise the windows and I heard a loud pop and a strange noise from the passenger side. It turns out the window mechanism had broken and the window was hanging there 1/3 close in a strange angle. I tried to lower it or raise it, but instead it just went all the way down. The sound startled me and I momentarily swerved and hit the curve. There was no damage to the car or other property. I had to drive home with wet cold air blowing in, which was very distracting. I believe this is a dangerous condition both because the original sound is startling, and because the condition becomes a distraction from driving.

15 Power Window problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/03/2006

Way to many to list here. I have had problems from the start. More than $7000 worth of repair (plus more that was covered by warr) the final item that caused me to say I would never consider another vw product was the engine damage caused by a timing belt failure. All services were performed at the dealership. The users manual states inspection of the belt at services (that I paid for) and replacement at 120,000 miles. I only had 92,000 miles. It will cost $5,000 to repair the engine. It is not cost effective to repair this car. It was a great car to drive but quality control is poor at best.

16 Power Window problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/01/2006

2001 Jetta 4-cyl 2. 0l, driver side power window regulator has failed causing the window to get stuck in different positions. The window makes a loud jarring noise when made to go all the way up or all the way down as the window motor doesn't shut off on its own. I am the third owner of this car. The previous owner also had seen this problem before.

17 Power Window problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/17/2006

My wife's 2002 Jetta station wagon turbo has been nothing but trouble. Only 30 k and today a $2,600 repair. Valve for air conditioner pump broke and sent metal fragments through the system necessitating replacement of ac pump. Cooling fan not working- that's $800. 00. Last repair was auto windows- idiot designers put in plastic components. My wife takes excellent care of her vehicle (oil change, etc. ) and this inferior bit of workmanship just costs her more money. She will shortly be dumping this piece of crap for Toyota corolla.

18 Power Window problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 05/01/2006

Like others, I have had the ignition coil replaced. This happened after the warranty expired, of course. I have also had electrical problems with the windows (regulator and motor) for all of them. Now, my check engine light is flashing and the car is sputtering. I know the secondary air intake valve needs replacing but it did not cause problems. Now I'm wondering if something new is wrong??? also, I was having problems with losing coolant and had to continuously replace antifreeze. After fixing what I thought was a small leak the entire system will not produce cool air! this car has been nothing but problems and vw should look into all of these complaints.

19 Power Window problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 04/04/2006

I purchased a used 1998 Volkswagen Jetta glx several years ago. Within a year of purchase, the front driver side window failed to opperate properly. I had the regulator replaced. A year later the front passenger window failed. That regulator was replaced. A year later the front driver side failed again. Before I could get it fixed, the rear diver side window failed as well. Both regulators are being replaced. The total cost of these repairs will be over $2000. I find it appalling that the same problem can occur multiple times in the same vehicle. I have learned that this is a common problem for vw vehicles and yet nothing is being done to correct it - be it a design flaw, manufacturing problem, etc. Failed regulators are both a safety and security problem. I hope that NHTSA takes these complaints seriously and investigates the problem.

20 Power Window problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/03/2006

1998 Jetta glx. Another window regulator default. I'm original owner, third time this has occurred. Back passenger window twice, no one ever sits back there and the window is hardly ever used. Sat. Driver's window, ker-plunk. Really annoying, window down and it's raining. Had to tape the opening closed. I'm paying for the repair, I know vw of America will not. Between this issue and the body molding constantly falling off, I doubt I'll buy another vw.

21 Power Window problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/14/2006

I bought a used 1998 vw Jetta for my daughter. Good car fun to drive but one day as she was driving the rear passenger window fell down into the door. A few weeks later the passenger side front window fell into the door. Most recently during the summer the driver's front window fell into the door. All of these incidents could startle a driver or shatter the window. Currently she has the window taped up on the driver's door and it hinders her visibility. Vw said it would cost $485 per door!!!! you know the driver's rear door will go soon and it just doesn't seem right that we should have to invest another close to $2000 just to keep the windows up! this is a common problem but when I called vw they thanked me for being a loyal vw customer and asked me if I name my cars. . . Vw knows that the plastic bottom on the regulator fails and they replace them with metal ones. They should do this for everyone that has these cars. I believe in 2001 the regulators with metal bottoms are oem.

22 Power Window problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/13/2006

Driving along and passenger window from the up position drops into the door!!!!! the mechanic said the plastic clips that hold the window broke. The new part has aluminum clips. This is a real accident waiting to happen!!! I almost had one as a result of this happening!!!!!.

23 Power Window problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/19/2005

I purchased the car new in June as a left over, had it a month and the window on the drivers side fell to the bottom of the door. Brought it to the dealer and was told they replaced it with metal clips and it wouldn't happen again. 5 months later it happened again, same window.

24 Power Window problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 12/11/2005

In my 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, all four power windows have had to be replaced in the last 5 years and now another has broken and needs to be replaced. A very shoddy product from what used to be a great car company. I've bought three vw's but never again. Shame on Volkswagen!.

25 Power Window problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 09/23/2005

The contact owns a 1999 Jetta old body style. 4 door sedan with 2. 0 liter engine. The car was purchased in 1998. The car had the following problem; 4 windows fell down due to faulty window regulators and or holding clips. The contact took the vehicle to Volkswagen service dealer, who offered an extended warranty. The extended warranty was offered 4 times . They repaired the windows 4 times. Customer still has problems with vehicle. Manufacturer has been contacted.

26 Power Window problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/26/2005

I have a 1998 vw Jetta GLS. I have previously replaced a window regulator at a cost of $450, now the remaining 3 have failed within a week. This is a known problem with vw and vw has acknowledged it with service bulletins, etc. Vw USA customer care has refused to cover the repair.

27 Power Window problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/07/2005

The window regulator went out on the front passenger window. This is the second time that this has happened. I understand that litigation was filed in August 2003 in reference to this matter.

28 Power Window problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/04/2005

This is the third time this has happened to my same vehicle, all happened the same way. Each time a different window. The power window button will start making noise when you raise/lower the window, then the window will only close half way. If you press the power window button again the window will drop into the door. In the past it happened to my 2 back passenger windows. Each time vw told me it was the window regulator and it cost about $350 to fix it. Since they are back passenger windows the dealer told me they could just prop the window up with a piece of wood much cheaper. Today the exact same sequence of events happened to my drivers side window, since its a driver window I most likely will have to pay out the $350 to replace the faulty regulator. . Read more...

29 Power Window problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 08/04/2005

I was driving to work when my 2002 voklswagen Jetta hit a bump in the road/pothole and the passenger airbag went off. I got out to inspect if I hit anything since I wasn't sure because of the airbag going off. I got out of the car and there was nothing in the road besides a pothole that everyone else hit as well on the off ramp. There was not a scratch of damage or any impact at all. I just bought this car a little over 2 months ago and it was already back to the dealer for a broken power window and twice for the transmission. I am fed up with this car. There is only 25,000 miles on the car and an airbag should not go off for a pothole. I went to a different vw dealer and they said it's not a warranty issue and it would cost $800 - $1,000 to fix. This is ridiculous that I will have to pay for something like this for normal use of the car.

30 Power Window problem of the 1997 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/24/2005

I feel like my Jetta is a deathtrap. In the four years that I have owned it, I have had four of the power window mechanisms malfunction. Currently, the front passenger window is stuck shut, and the driver's side back window is stuck open! this is especially concerning because throughout the cold season, at least one, if not all of the doors will not open. People think my boyfriend is being a gentleman, but really, he has to walk around and let me out. This is not the frozen lock phenomenon common to many vehicles- the actual latch mechanism malfunctions. We have been repeatedly trapped in our car and had to climb out the window! the failures are so consistent, so expensive to repair (and the repairs do not last) that we drive around like this because cost of the repairs exceeds the value of the car. Help!.

31 Power Window problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/14/2005

2 times I had to replace a faulty 02 sensor 1st time engine temp sensor. Rear left light burned out 3-4 times within 80 000km. Said it's easier to replace then find the problem at dealership. Have done oil consumption tests 1 litre of oil per 3161km. Saying that this normal. This dealership have recommended flushing the engine. Changing the grade of oil. Do not drive in rush hour traffic. Most of the consumption occurs on the highway and not in traffic. Change the oil instead of 8000 km at 5000km??? this is what Volkswagen has recommended. The most interesting part was watching the mechanic when it consumed the most amount between oil consumption test. He started looking for leaks again & added oil. Rattling in driver side door and window fell into door passenger side. Fixed window and rattling still seems to be noticable.

32 Power Window problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/01/2005

Vw sent a letter to me that the side windows on my 2001 Jetta tdi sedan vw may fail and they would repair them when it occurred up to 7 years. They would not repair them before failure. When they failed I was on the highway doing 65 mph and the drivers window failed crashing into the inner door well. Not knowing what was going on and the loud bang in the door almost caused an accident. I brought the car to the dealer who put a fix kit on it. Now the 2 front windows they put the fix kit in bottoms out making a loud nose and when it comes up it makes a clicking noise like something hitting the glass. The dealer states this is the vw fix. I have a 2003 Jetta tdi sedan vw and it does not have this problem so I researched why. What I found out was that you can't buy the 2001 window regulators and motors from vw you can only get the update like in my 2003. The reason is that vw came up with a fix that is not proper with this fix kit. The correct fix is to replace the regulators and motors. The windows did not make noises prior to them failing and should not be doing this if the fix kit works proper.

33 Power Window problem of the 1997 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 07/01/2005

This is another of the many customer complaints regarding the power windows in Volkswagen cars. Currently, my front passenger window is stuck down and will not raise. It will require a new window regulator. My back windows are also currently stuck in the up position. I had previously brought the car in to check the right rear window. Volkswagen informed me that it needed a regulator and that the repairs would cost $800!!! for one window!!! I still had one more window to fix at that point. The repairs would cost almost 1/3 of the total value of my car!! so needless to say, my rear windows have been stuck up for the past 3 years. Now my front window is stuck down. This is a safety risk. The car is now completely vulnerable to theft and the elements. Doing some research, I have found hundreds of complaints regarding this defect. I have also found a technical bulletin regarding window regulator motors. Bulletin #9704039704f. This issue needs to be addressed by Volkswagen and a recall needs to be issued. As I understand it, i’ve been lucky so far. Most of these defective windows simply fall into the car. This is a safety risk for the people in the car and needs to be dealt with.

34 Power Window problem of the 1997 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 03/01/2005

'recall campaign' for Volkswagen Jetta 1997 install protective shield in right rear wheelhousing. The consumer was chagred for a recall regarding the window regulators.

35 Power Window problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Failure Date: 02/01/2005

1999, Volkswagen, Jetta wolfsburg edition. Front and back passenger side power windows will not go down; back driver's side window fell down into door. Passenger's side windows was stuck in the up position could represent a hazard should there be a wreck and the windows could not be let down. Driver's side rear window fell down into the door was a security risk, not only for being able to secure the car, but from someone being able to enter the car while driving. Volkswagen had a service order to repair the known defective mechanism in the late model 1999 cars and later, but it did not cover the early 1999 models, even though it was the same problem and defective parts. Neither the dealer on lorain avenue in north olmsted cleveland, ohio nor Volkswagen of America will repair the defect without charge to the consumer.
