Volkswagen Jetta owners have reported 281 problems related to power window (under the visibility category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volkswagen Jetta based on all problems reported for the Jetta.
Most recently, the water pump failed. Apparently this is another common failure, which should be covered by a recall. Here is the list of other problems I have had:
-both window regulators failed (covered by recall)
-tensioner pulley on serpentine belt failed at 40000 miles ($400)
-maf sensor at 47000 miles (covered by recall)
-catalytic converter failed 50000 miles (covered by emissions recall)
-alternator failed at 55000 miles ($450 - using rebuilt alternator)
-water pump failed at 60,000 miles ($350 repair bill). The question is. . . What's next? I plan to sell the car within the next few months.

My drivers side power window regulator failed, causing the window to fall down into the door. This required driving home for several miles in weather approaching zero degrees. This is a very common problem with vw's, as the same thing has happened to my mom's vw beetle (1999).
I have had the front driver's side window regulator replaced/repaired twice by the dealer under warranty. Then I replaced it myself once, as the repair costs are too expensive. Then it broke again and I don't have the funds to fix it, so I simply avoid rolling down the window. The rear driver's side regulator has been replaced once by the dealer under warranty. The rear passenger's side regulator is now acting up. I'm afraid to roll down my windows as they may not roll back up.

I purchased a 2000 vplkswagen Jetta in the year 2002, pre-owned. I have had nothing but problems with it since I bought it, and now am trading it in, and taking a $3000 loss. Here is a list of the problems I have had in the last 2 years listed from first problems to most recent: 1. Window tray broke, window fell into the door. $300 2. Trunk latch broke, had to get replaced $50 3. Sunroof broke, would not move and needed the entire thing replaced including the motor. $1800 4. Water pump leaked out all coolant, needed to be replaced $ 600 5. Strut coil snaped in half while driving, needed to replace both sides $500 6. Lastly, (this is the point when I decided to file a complaint and trade the car in for another brand) water leaking from the electrical panel on top of inside roof. Sunroof then malfunctioned, opening when the car was started and the knob was not touched. Had to pay to disconnect power sunroof. Whatever you do, please, do not buy a vw Jetta. That is unless you want to have it continually in the shop and having to spend a lot of money on repairs.
We purchased a brand new 2003 vw Jetta in June of 2003. I have had no problems with the vehicle until yesterday, 11/28/04. We could smell something "hot" and burning. The drivers seat caught on fire from the heated seats, there is a hole in the seat and my boyfriend burnt his hand. Within minutes of that happening, the passenger side door window just fell down. I've never seen anything like this before. Somehow, the window is no longer in it's track. I have been doing some research online and finding many more instances with the windows falling and the seats catching on fire? what is the deal? this is very unsafe. I have my appointment tomorrow with our local vw dealer in erie PA to see what they will do to correct this. I want both seats looked at. . . . I do not feel safe in my car any longer!!!.
(1) very loud bang on the driver side door (2) front driver-side window fell directly into the door panel (3) small plastic clip has to be replaced, at the same time dealer tryes to change a whole power windows assembly for $500.
The power windows on my 1998 vw Jetta iii failed. I've experienced this occasion 4 times since I've had my car. Currently both passenger and driver side windows are not functioning. The powers windows would not roll up or down. I have not had them repaired since its a very expensive rapair. I've searched the internet and it seems that a lot of 1998 volkswagon Jetta owners experience the same problems I have. I brought my car to the volkswagon dealer and they said that this was a common problem with the type of car I have.
Both windows on the driver's and passenger's door collapsed and no longer work within 2 days of each other. I have read on many similar cases on Volkswagen Jettas. It appears that vw used parts which do not have much durability when constructing the window supports.

On 3 separate occasions when the power window button was depressed and glass dropped down into the door . This occurred because the plastic clips that hold the glass easily break . Dealership has to take the door apart to service the glass.

Consumer complained that side windows were not going up and down at will. Consumer took the vehicle to a dealer, and was told that the motor window regulator was defective. To have them repaired would cost at least $500. 00 per window, which consumer did not have.

My passenger side window stopped working. This is very upsetting as I have read on several websites that Volkswagen Jettas have a tendencey for the windows to break. I would like to know why there isn't a recall.
Window failure, falls into door. 1998 vw Jetta. Leaving a friends home the drivers rear window just drops into the door. Unable to afford repair window still non usable, window tied off in the up position. I have read its due to the plastic clips. I don't know but would like more information.
Passenger side window failure. We simply pulled into a parking lot, passenger pressed the button to roll down the windo, and when passenger pushed button again to raise window, it simply collapsed into the door frame.
The rear side windows of my Jetta have fallen into the door.
The caller had the vehicle's electrical system replaced 5 times. The windows/the alarm system/the lights/the gauges, and the dashboard lights failed. As the caller indicated everything electrical malfunctioned. The caller was able to drive vehicle to the dealer, and a few times he had to have it towed. Dealer could never give him an answer why the vehicle was having these problems. The manufacturer said they could not help him for free, and since the problem included different components it did not fall under the lemon law. Manufacturer said that if the caller got a loan on the vehicle it would be a different situation.
Driving on freeway at 65mph and the right rear windowed lowered abruptly and would not raise up. 4 year old son in carseat was next to window. Had to pull off on berm and calm him down. Window would not lift up. Subsequent visit to dealer that day resulted in a charge of $500 to replace the window regulator. Vw dealer stated that they see a lot of these failures in vw's.
Was currently deployed in support of operation iraqi freedom for more than a year, my car was at my parents, being driven once or twice a week to keep engine in good shape. Some of these things have been since returning in April 2004, others happened prior to leaving in February 2003. It's a 2002 Jetta GLS. I shouldn't be having these type of problems this soon. 1. Oil plug on oil pan is almost stripped from getting oil changes (advised by 3 different garages). Currently attempting to get a new plug, an oversized one per 2 garages. 2. Patches of paint seem to be almost chipping away (on several spots all over the car). Took it to the dealer & they said it was due to bird poop. My car stays in a garage & gets washed bi-weekly. 3. The coating on both inside door handles is peeling. 4. The window mechanism needed fixed. Dealer fixed. 5. Recall about brake light fixed by dealer.
Turning into driveway, heard a "pop" and then watched the front passenger window shake and rattle its way down, without the power window buttons being depressed. Window remained trapped down in the door, until the dealer finally looked and it and determined the screws and pins holding the window track in place had cracked.
Consumer was driving the vehicl when the rear passenger window fell down. Approximately six months earlier rear driver's window fell down. . The windows were currently taped up.
Power window on drivers side will not go down due to bad regulator and possible motor. This is the 4th window to have this problem on this car. Inoperable window, compromise the safety of any person(s) in vehicle. Example:in case of fire they may not get out, example : in case of assault they may not be able to roll window up.

Window regulator on 1999 1/2 vw Jetta broke twice, and dealer charged $87. 00 for part that may last another 2,000miles. Part should be recalled and fixed for good.
Purchased car in January 2002 new from dealer, in shop 2 days later tire not installed, causing it to go flat, happened again 2 days after that, and again the next week, finally rims and tires were replaced problem solved. Then hand brake failed, in shop to fix, 2 weeks after it was returned failed again, fixed, then 3 weeks after that if failed again, then the window brackets broke, then engine failed that was supposedly on a recall part, was fixed, then it failed a few months later again, supposedly fixed, then it failed again only this time they said it was the catalytic converter, then it failed again this time they said it was the oil pump and hose and blamed that on us, then it failed again, was fixed, and now it is completely down again.
I got my 2003 vw Jetta in February of '03. Now not even a year and a half later I have huge problems with my car. My brake lights will randomly stay on even when the car is turned off. My windows do not always work properly. Finally the worst was that I was parked in my drive way, it is steep but the same place I have parked dozens of times, when the emergency brake let go in the middle of the night and my car rolled down the drive way eventually crashing into trees. I read on other complaints that there was one other person who had experienced the failure of the emergency brake and many others who had similar electrical problems. Well I called Volkswagen about my brake lights and they said that indeed there was a recall on my car as a result of a failing brake light switch. Turns out they had failed to inform me. I wonder what other recalls they have failed to inform people about.
Bought the car in 2000. 3 months after that I had brought the car to a carwash (handwash) no waxing was done. The next day, there were spots on the hood of my car. The clear coat had come off. I took it to the dealer in sunnyvale, CA and he said it was the carwash companies fault. They had left the car out side with wax on it. I had no proof that the car wasn't waxed, but I did not pay for it. The next problem happened in 2003. My O2 sensor went out. A little over a year later, the maf sensor went out. 5 months after that, the turbo cutoff valve went bad and 1 day after that was repaired, the drivers side window decided to drop into the door. The car is a 2000 with only 55k miles on it. It has had all oil changes and basic maintence done that is needed. This should not be happening already!.
My power window regulator went out on my 2000 vw Jetta and the window fell into the door, in looking on the internet on sites such as msn. Com I have found this to be a common problem for almost every single vw owner that has internet access.
My 1999 vw Jetta wolfsburg has major problems with the automatic window mechanisms. 3 of the 4 windows have failed for one reason or another. This is a faulty design, and vw will only cover the front 2 windows.
I purchased a new 2002 Jetta GLS and have had the car jump started four times in the past year. After the second time the battery died, they gave me a solar panel to help keep the battery charged. My battery died again last week with the solar panel plugged in. Vw ran another diagnostic test and still maintains that, among a long list of the other possibilities they have offered me, they are sure it is because I don't drive the car enough to charge the battery sufficiently to handle all the electronics that are standard on the car. I am not satisfied with this explanation. If they put all these "extras" on the car and it draws too much on the battery when not driven for a few days , then why put them on the car? in addition,I also had the front windows crash inside the door while entering a major highway. They were replaced. And, last month while I had the car in for a recall regarding the tail lights, I had to have the window mechanism fixed again due to a faulty clamp. I will never buy another Volkswagen. I never expected a new car to have so many problems. It is an inconvenience and a waste of time.
Just purchased my first vw Jetta. May be my last vw period. My windows work when they feel like it. After researching the problem, I found out this is a extremely common problem that vw takes no reponsibility for. Fixing it myself, it costs me $150 every time it happens. I should charge vw $70 an hour for labor!.
Both front wheel bearings failed with less than 60,000 miles. Front right electric window fell into door at 65,000. Replaced spool and broken retention clips. Radio has failed 3 times and been replaced twice. Third time I had to reset fuse #42. Old parts are available.
I was driving home from work. It was a nice day so I had the front windows open part way. When I hit the expressway, I decided to put the windows up. When I hit the switch for the passenger window, I heard the sound of plastic breaking. I looked over and saw the passenger window fall into the door. I drove home and removed the panel to find a couple of broken plastic clips in the bottom of the door. I have not contacted volkwagen yet, buy apparently this is an ongoing problem that Volkswagen refuses to recall.
While attempting to roll the window up, the window fell into the door. The car was parked in a public parking lot during the day, without being able to securely lock the vehicle. The local vw shop was able to correct the problem the following day. This was the second occurrence.
I own a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta. I have now had to replace the window regulator on 2 occasions. A quick survey of the internet shows that this is not an unusual repair.
I have already had 3 regulators replaced, now I need one more replaced and have another window regulator on it's way out. Window stops operating, your lucky if it stops in the "up" position. I understand this is a problem with all Jetta's from various dealers / repair facilities.
