Volkswagen Jetta owners have reported 33 problems related to tire sidewall (under the tire category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volkswagen Jetta based on all problems reported for the Jetta.
2014 vw Jetta has been experiencing problems with low tires and handling issues while driving on dry, wet or extreme heat conditions. This car has been serviced by the dealer since its purchase 13-Nov-2013 and wasn't until 1-may-2015 that we noticed 3 of the 4 tires have sidewalls which have separated and come apart on the side of the tire as well as in multiple places of the tire. The tires have 20,000 miles are in great condition and have problems with the sidewalls only. Seems to be a recurring issue I have noticed with these tires and I am having them all replaced!.

Brand new tire completely failed at highway speed. This tire was 7 days old and there was a total sidewall failure. Looking online after the incident, there are countless complaints of the same issue.

We had a tire failure in the sidewall on a properly cared for and non-abused tire. We now have two additional tires failing on our vehicle (total 3/4) with the same defect and we have not driven over any potholes or other road defects that would be responsible for causing this failure. The auto manufacturer and tire manufacturer disclaim all responsibility on tires that are 14 months old and have under 16,000 miles on them. The first failure was deemed unsafe to drive and we were finally given a loaner after being told to drive on it for a week. Just over a month after its replacement we now have two additional tires exhibiting the same sidewall defect. Online accounts and reviews will show that a great number of consumers have had this exact same complaint.

I have a 2011 vw Jetta with hankook optimo tires and noticed today after filling up the tires with air that the sidewalls on the tires were coming apart.
The contact owns 2011 Volkswagen Jetta with hankook optimo h725a tires, line size: 205/55r/16. The contact mentioned that while at a tire shop for unrelated repairs, the technician noticed that the interior side walls of three of the tires started to rupture in and around the circumference. The contact stated that one of the tires was the front driver side but was unaware of the location of the other two tires affected. The tires were replaced. The dealer was made aware of failure. The approximate failure mileage was 34,500. Updated 09/06/12.
I purchased a 2006 vw Jetta in late 2008, early 2009. The car was brand new and sat in the showroom for two years. After of driving for 1 1/2 years, the tire sidewalls began to separate. Continental made the adjustment and I replaced the tires thinking that sitting in a showroom for that much time, they probably dry rotted. Today, I am having to replace all four tires again after 13 months for the same reason, sidewall separation. Reading the complaints on this site and others, it appears there is a serious issue here for sidewalls on continental tires. The size is 225/45r 17. The tires are contipro contact.

I bought a set of 215/50r-17 91v zexius xi-427 all season radial tires on 07/26/2010 from les schwab tires in California. On memorial day 5/30/2011 I had a blowout on I-215 in las vegas nv called emergency road service and they put on spare. I called les schwab to tell about incident the next day. I was told it was tire seperation by an competitor tire shop. On 6/11/2011 two weeks and 282 miles later I woke up to find I had a flat tire on a different zexius tire, so I put air in the tire and drove the car to tire works a tire shop a mile down the road. Tire works checked the tire for any objects in the tire but found none. They found the sidewall had a crack where air was leaking through and determine it was tire seperation. Upon further inspection they found cracks in the other two zexius tires which the tire specialist said was caused by dry rot!
I replaced the zexius tire with another set of tire's due to the lack of confidence in the safety of these tires. I am in current dispute with les schwab tires for a refund for the total cost of tires. Partialy the dispute is whom will pay for shipping the zexius tires back to California as I live in henderson,nv currently. I need help to settle this dispute and exposure to these faulty tires.

2010 Volkswagen Jetta. Consumer writes in regards to problem with oem tires stating that these low profile tires are either a defective batch or that they are not properly matched to the 2010 Jetta the consumer stated when the vehicle had less than 9,000 miles, sidewall bubbles began to form on three of the tires at separate times. The dealer replaced one of the tires as a courtesy.
I have had two flat tires on my 2010 Volkswagen Jetta tdi in the past 3 weeks (the tires only have 23,000 miles on them). The first was the rear drivers side tire; I hit a small pot hole and the tire immediately went flat. I have driven this road for over 2 yrs now and never had a flat. The second one happened today on the interstate after hitting another small pothole. This was the drivers front tire and it also went immediately flat. Both are sidewall blowouts. I wonder how long I have until the other two decide to blowout. I do not have a lot of faith in these continental contiprocontact tires.
The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta. The vehicle had hancock tires size 205/55/r16, dot number 1grpdyh. While having the tire examined, the contact was informed by a mechanic that the front driver side tire was cracked along the sidewall. The tire was not replaced and there were no prior warnings of the failure. The current and failure mileage was 57,000.

I noticed that the side walls of my continental tires on my 2006 vw Jetta were cracked(there were 25k miles on the tires). I reported this to continental -mr. Carl walker. I replaced the tires with bridgestones. I still have the originals. I was told to take the tires to merchant's tire on woodfied road in gaithersburg, MD and have them inspected and the tread depth measured. I did this immediately after speaking to mr. Walker. The sales rep. At merchant's called mr. Walker after inspection while I was present and told him that the sidewalls were indeed dangerously cracked on all 4 tires and that the tread depth was almostlike new. I was promised 60% compensation for the continental tires by continental's rep. Carl walker ( claim # 244382) - phone #7045834819 -in October but have received nothing. These tires are unsafe and it is only luck that prevented a serious accident due to their failure. Vw says they have no jurisdiction over continental even though they supply tires to thousands of vw vehicles. It seem that vw and continental want to ignore the problem for me and I assume all other owners of these tires.
A rip appeared in the sidewall of my front tire over the course of several days. The tire appears to be separating. I noticed it after hearing a clicking sound while driving slowly in a parking lot. This was not proceeded by any impact to the tire. The rip is getting larger. Online research into this tire shows that numerous others have had similar tire failure incidents, often resulting in costly repairs and medical bills. I believe that this tire model is defective and should be recalled.
I was driving home 50-55 mph clear night smooth road I had not noticed any signs of my tire being low I have valve caps that show when tire air pressure is low and they all were green than I heard a loud noise and my car pulled to the left I pulled over and noticed my tire had completely separated at the sidewall leaving about 2-3 inches of tire on the rim and the rest was in one piece barley sitting on the rim the tire was made by nankang toursport 611 dot 109n other numbers I found on the tire were 517 2306 z2c, n-2570-3l xr611 radial 195/65 r15 9ih m+s tubeless when the tire blew out and the tire separated it tore my abs sensor wire and im not sure what other damage my alignment is now off as well.
Contipro tires. Three of the tires on my new car have had sidewalls bulges. The first I feel was my fault. I drove on the tire that had low tire pressure. But the two other tires have not had any compromising situations. Each tire had less than 5,000 miles on it. Continental tire warranty is a joke, they have been no assistance. I have never had tires fail me, I have always just worn them out.
I own a 2003 volkswagon Jetta that came with goodyear tires. At 20,435 thousand miles I got my first flat tire. When a second tire went flat less than 2 months later, I decided to purchase a full set of different tires. When the old tires were removed there was severe cracking and "tears" in the walls of the tires. I maintain my vehicle so there was no reason as to why the tires went flat. I live in a safe neighboorhood and had my car for a year before the tires started to go flat. I did not drive through any construction sites and there was no sign this was vandalism since the cuts were on the inside of the wheel. Luckily, neither of the flats happened on a major highway because I could have lost complete control of my car. When my tires were replaced the mechanic told me that I was basicaly driving on "time bombs" and that it was good that I came in. He then proceeded to show me other tires with the same characteristics. I could not believe goodyear had a line of defective tires and they were doing nothing about it. With a name like goodyear I would have thought they would have cared more about their customers. Aside from the tears, the tires are still in good shape with the tread barely worn down. Most tires last 40,000 plus miles, I got my first flat tire at half that. Now, I am out over $500. 00 because I had to purchase a whole new set of tires. I think it is outrageous goodyear has not offered to pay any of that. I kept the tires as proof and I have many pictures. Apparently they only pay attention to people who get injured.

Goodyear eagle rs-a tire failed due to cracks on the interior sidewall leading to a blowout and near separation of the tire from the wheel.
The front left tire went flat after vehicle was sitting for a month, and the front right tire blew out while driving because of cracks in the sidewall. Also, the 2 rear tires developed cracks in the sidewall.

While driving at 30 mph consumer realized that the vehicle was riding on a flat tire. Upon closer inspection consumer found that the tire had numerous splits on the inside sidewall. Also, consumer noticed that metal was exposed in some of the splits. Consumer took the vehicle to the tire dealer, who admitted that the tires were defective, but would not replace the tires free of charge. The same thing happened in 2002, but all of the tires were replaced free of charge. The manufacturer was aware of the problem.
While home on leave, my son had a flat. Upon taking the tire off, we discovered the inside separating. Almost like a slit on the inside walls. Upon further inspection, all four tires were the same. We had to replace all four. These are the eagle rsa, high performance tires, with less than 20000 miles on them. Four blowouts waiting to happen.
I have a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 1. 8t sport equipped with goodyear rsa tires, size 245/45 r17 h91. The tires had only 16,000 miles on them. At highway speed the drivers side tire blew out. Further inspection of the tire showed that it failed at the side wall. There was a tear in the sidewall almost thru 40 percent of the tire. I managed to make it over 3 lanes of traffic and narrowly overted a collission. Futhermore goodyear declined to honor my warranty claim. I think that goodyear rsa model tires should be investigated. These are supposed to be high performance tires and one failed at the sidewall with only 16,000 miles on it and at only 60 miles per hour.
Richard gunn wrote to goodyear; I have a 2002 vw Jetta that came stock with goodyear eagle rsa tires,225/45r17 91h. At 13,000 miles one of the tires went flat but did not appear to have any nails or holes in it when I removed it, although thesidewall was split. I took the tire into the clem tire company 7907 highway 72, madison, al 35758 , 256-837-9151. One tire was put on order as these tires are an unusual size for this car. The following day a second tire went flat. Again there was no nail or explainable cause. A second tire was ordered. When the tires came in I went down to have them installed. I asked the shop to look at the front two tires to see that they were ok as I had now become suspicious of these tires. The shop found the front two tires were split out on the inside sidewalls as well. The shop contacted goodyear who was good enough to replace all four tires free and asked to send the tires back for evaluation. The tires that are being returned are the same as what was just put on my car and frankly I am not all that warm and fuzzy that they are safe to drive on. I would like to see the failure analysis report on the returned tires, complete with conclusion as to the failure mechanism. Also I would like to know what the corrective action is to verify that this tire or lot has been isolated so that others might not be injured due to defects in this tire. I suppose I was fortunate that I was not traveling at high speed when my tires failed but others might not be as fortunate. Additionally I think that Volkswagen should be informed so that they can make the call on whether to notify their customers of this potential issue. I have a copy of the receipt that has all of the details on it if you would like me to fax it to you a can do so.
Goodyear eagle rsa 225/45 17r tires that came with the car when we bought it new. Completely worn out in 18,000 miles. Inside sidewalls were cracked and had bulges. (breakdown of cords) talked to vw about this and they said it wasn't covered under warranty. They told us to take it it to a tire store because it wasn't their problem. Went to America's tire store (livermore, CA) and they were good enough to call goodyear on the defect. They pro-rated the tires (I think we got $25 out of it) and recommended continental contitouring contact 225/45 17r. These tires are warranted from conti for 55,000 miles! the price was the same as the goodyears. Outstanding tires! don't buy your vw new with goodyears! get the michilens if you can.
Sidewall failure of tubeless radial right front tire. Michelin "pilot" xse hx mxm4 225/45 r17 treadwear: 300 temperature: a traction: a tire was properly inflated and had only 8,190 miles (oem). Blowout of left rear and right front. First occurred 0800 21 Apr 01 on interstata 64 west near richmond va. Second later that same day on interstate 95 south north of richmond. In both cases belt separation occurred. No puncture. Holes in sidewall. I took the one tire I saved to a goodyear dealer and he determined that the tire had a defect resulting in belt separation. Wear on the tire even tho it had 50000 miles was over 20% tread left. I would never have expected two blowouts in one day particularly with the tread as good as it appeared. The tires were state inspected in late January. (tiresize: 195/60/r14)( dot number: tire size: 195/60/r14 ).

Tire had a sidewall seperation on the highway resulting in accident; this has happened now twice, on the stock tires, first time I thought it was just bad luck, however two times seems to be fishy. The tires have plenty of tread left. I am interested to find out if this has happened to other people. ( dot number: mkhcfjdr19 tire size: 195/60r14 ).
Tire rolled over a non-jagged branch and sidewall blewout.
