Vehicle's transmission failed. The transmission had gone out when it was under warranty. It had taken three weeks to get the vehicle back at that time. The following year, the vehicle started to jerk. The vehicle was out of warranty. It wasn't until the vehicle stopped again, the consumer was told the transmission had leaked. There were numerous repairs. The vehicle was placed in the shop for the timing belt and the cylinder head. The vehicle also had to be taken in for a protective shield in the right rear wheel housing. The distributor cap, ignition rotor, and the spark plugs were replaced. Repair was also made to the wire for the ignition coil/cam shaft. The ignition switch was replaced and the engine control modules.

We bagan experiencing problems with the transmission in this car within weeks after buying it, it was shifting out to hard and slipping. We took the car to crown volgswagen in birmingham, al in April 2001 we were not satisfied and then took the car to quality volgswagen in tuscaloosa, al where they replaced the transmission. The car ddrove normal for about one month then we began noticing the same problems again with the transmission. On 06-24-2001 the transmission failed again only going into drive and no other gears. Also on may 11, 2001 the rear windshield exploded and cracked for no apparent reason we had to pay for replacing it. Also on 06-20-2001 the water/fluid light began flashing on the dashboard we also had this fixed. We would desperately like to hear from you concerning this complaint. Any information you can offer us would be greatly appreciated. Thank you - martha pare.
Second transmission failure for this car, unsure if the dealer in fact replaced origional. Also have noticed speedometer making a clicking sound at all speeds.

First failure while getting on freeway. Dealer service had car for 38 days, 2 or 3 rebuild attempts before telling me a new transmission was installed. Problem was in reverse gear, said output shaft was bent. Two months later the transmission suffered another failure of the same type while on vacation in san fransisco. Dealer is telling me user abuse, I know of 6 other 1999 and 2000 Jetta's that have had manule transmission failures.
Transmission failure causing hesitation and jerking when shifting.
I am dubious about the safety of a well maintained car when the transmission fails in the first 6 months. The manufacturer's serviceman jumps the battery against owners manual recommendations and blows the internal fuse for the radio and sets off the airbag sensor (neither repaired by the dealer at no charge. Also,) tires needing replacement at less than 20,000 miles - lock cylinder fallling out of driver's side door- and all the power locks failing, resulting in having to go to the dealer just to get out of the car.
When attempting to accelerate from a stop light vehicle was very sluggish and moved slowly. Dealer performed diagnostic testing and determined that the transmission had failed.
Multiple transmission failures. Dealer and volkswagon America refuse to recognize state and federal lemon laws.
Transmission module failed.
Transmission failed at 43000, linkage is still not correct. Nlm.
Check engine light repeatedly lights up on dash. The car does not shift properly and the tachometer exhibits very high rpms. The original transmission was finally replaced late fall of 2000 (replaced with a brand new one). This transmission completely failed in Jan. 2001 and was again replaced with a completely new transmission. Now in March of 2001 engine check light is again lighting up and the car does not shift right. Vw was notified, but does not want to do anything about it while it is under warranty. We offered to take blue book value as trade in on a new Jetta. My concern is what happens if the transmission fails at highway speeds?.
