The car had transmissions problems soon after I purchased it. Volkswagen said it repaired it when I brought it to the dealer for warranty service. Now a more serious transmission problem has occurred. At first it sort of felt like the gears were slipping, then it suddenly stopped moving while I was driving. This was a potentially dangerous situation. Luckily, I was able to pull over. To try to move again, I shifted into drive for extended periods of time, like 30sec or more, and the revs would go all the way to 10 but it would not move. Then it stopped working all together, and now it won't even turn on. I towed the car to the dealer and said it was the transmission. It seems clear that either the transmission was not repaired properly or it has a dangerously faulty design.

Transmission slips extremely badly even though it doesnt even have 90k miles almost makes it impossible to drive in city and is dangerous when needing to speed up and slow down. Transmission slips more when speeding up from slow speeds and will reach high rpms of 4700 even when not touching the gas but I have had it slip on the highway out of nowhere and it peaked at 7300 rpm when not touching the gas which is past the redline on the rpms. It happens almost every day I drive to work (20 minutes on the freeway) and shouldn't be happening with this low amount of miles.

3 weeks after purchasing my pre-owned vehicle in may 2019, smoke started pouring out of the engine on my way to work. I had my car towed to a shop and was told the cause of the issue was broken engine hose clamps. The shop charged me almost $700 for brand new hose assemblies and clamps. Also, my transmission is slipping intermittently and I do not feel safe driving this vehicle.

When starting from a stop the transmission slips into neutral and the car rolls unpowered to a stop. If the engine is turned off and transmission is shifted to "park" to restart the engine it is then impossible to shift the transmission out of "park" into neutral or any other gear. Whenever this is happening various warning lights appear illuminated on the warning panel-eg. "low washer fluid" and "traction control warning. " in traffic this is very dangerous and to get to an "outside lane" may be impossible. To lose power when starting from a stop sign and having to coast to a stop in the lane one has just entered is very dangerous. Twice when turning left with a left-turn green arrow the transmission failed and I rolled to a stop, shifted to "park" to restart the engine only to have the transmission "lock-up" in "park" with me unable to physically get the selector lever into "drive. " this car has been serviced at vw every 10,000 miles since new and at 104,000 miles I am told it may need a new $7,000. 00 transmission. On-line I see that the "dsg transmission " has been recalled twice from 2006 to 2016 for "slipping into neutral. " however, vw claims there are no recalls for my vehicle and when I do a ntsc VIN search I find no such problem listed. My nearest vw service department is 45 miles away via interstate and city driving and I am afraid to attempt driving there for a diagnosis. Local transmission shops are unable to service or even diagnose or measure the fluid level in the vw proprietary sealed-unit.

Automatic transmission slips/jerks/jumps when upshifting and downshifting at low speeds and highway speeds, brought to dealer and had transmission diagnostic conducted, reported no problems and stated they could not duplicate the erratic shifting. Now currently thuds and physically jumps when shifting from 1st to 2nd to 3rd and even 4th to 5th, brought it in again to GMC dealer and they said I would be needing a new transmission at only 110000 miles, advised me to check my car VIN# for valve body recall.
Beware of this used car - it needs serious mechanical work. I test drove it and realized that the transmission slips, the timing chain rattles, and the a/c did not work.

I was informed by niello Volkswagen when I took my car in to be serviced for 2 recalls that I had a major oil leak. I then brought my vehicle in to sacramento european on 2/1/12 for an oil change and to find out what was the cause of my oil leak. I was informed by them that I did not have an oil leak, but a transmission leak. They stated that there was a technical service bulletin out that this is a known problem that the seal that joins the 2 transmission components is leaking. Clearly since there is a service bulletin out that this is a known problem, the transmissions that they have in these Volkswagen cars are defective and need to be replaced. My transmission is slipping when it shifts into second and third gears and also when I brake.

I have a 2002 Jetta & in November 2011, I began experiencing issues with the automatic transmission. It only occurs when the car is cold & after warming up, the issues go away. Upon starting the vehicle, the car shifts hard between the 1st, 2nd & 3rd gears. It revs up between each gear then jumps to the next gear. I took it into one vw dealer service shop who told me that there were several issues, that the transmission was slipping, I had a vacuum leak & the cb boot is split. The transmission would need to be completely replaced costing me $5811. 56 (parts and labor). The car has 103,508 miles. I took the car to another vw dealer shop to get a second opinion and they ran test and said that there was nothing wrong. Frustrated with the vw service shops, I decided to take it to a transmission repair - they stated that since this was a sealed transmission I would need to have it rebuilt which would cost $2,500-$3,500. Who knows if this will actually correct the issue since nobody can pinpoint what is wrong or diagnose the issue! I researched it online, and countless '02 Jetta owners are experiencing the exact issues. . Read more...

2009 Volkswagen Jetta. Consumer writes in regards to transmission problems the consumer stated as she applied the accelerator pedal, the rpm would spike and the engine would rev, but the vehicle didn't have any power as if the gear slipped into neutral when trying to accelerate. The dealer informed the consumer there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. The consumer stated there are two open recalls, but her vehicle identification was not included.
The contact owns a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta. While the contact was driving approximately 50 mph, the transmission began to hesitate in a jerking motion. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they informed that the transmission functioned normally. In addition, on a separate occasion the transmission slipped and the gears would not shift properly. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the technician was unable to locate a problem. There was a recall associated with the NHTSA campaign id number 09v333000 (power train: automatic transmission). The recall specified that the vehicle must be manufactured between September 2008 and August 2009. The vehicle production year was not included in the recall. The contact experienced the identical safety defect as mentioned in the recall. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 380. Updated 01/04/lj the consumer took the vehicle to another dealership where they replaced a faulty computer chip. The vehicle is now operating as designed. Updated 01/10/11.
I have always followed the recommended service schedule for my car. The owner manual doesn't mention replacing the transmission fluid for the life of the car. The car has 69500 miles. Three days ago while driving uphill I accelerated but the car did not pick up speed while the rpm went considerably higher (6000 rpm). I went to see my mechanic (a certified vw mechanic) who said that the transmission was slipping and not downgrading as it should and I should consider changing the transmission fluid as a possible remedy. He explained that a transmission fluid level could be the cause. He also said that since the transmission is "sealed" it was all he could do to try to remedy the problem. How can a "sealed" transmission that requires no maintenance be low in fluid ? he did change the transmission fluid and told me that the fluid was almost as dark as coffee, an indication that there was an issue inside the transmission. After changing the fluid the problem did not go away and gradually got worse. Three days later my transmission is extremely noisy and I can only run the car in "manual"mode in order to change the gears. I can no longer accelerate in 4th or 5th gear and just use them while cruising (at a maximum speed of 45 mph. Vw has a 60000 miles warranty on the power train but a quick search on google revealed that a lot of 2002 Jetta owners had their transmission go bad around 70000 to 85000 miles. Vw used to have 100000 miles warranty and reduced it to 60000, just below the mileage at which the transmission seem to break down. I suspect that they know their transmissions are defective and cut down the warranty in order not to have to bear the financial burden of a defective design. Considering the number of 2002 Jetta owner that have had to replace their "sealed" transmission around 70000 it seems to indicate a trend or at least a known problem with the part. I am now left with changing the transmission at a cost of around $5000. Please investigate.
There is a long running issue with the 2005 1/2 vw Jetta v transmission valve body that is a safety issue with the transmission. When the trans gets hot sitting in traffic. The transmission slips in and out of gear or shifts very hard or will not shift at all and may cause a rear end accident as the Jetta does not shift. Vw America does know of the problem and issued a extended warranty to 100,000 miles or 7 years. But after doing extensive research there are Jetta's that are out there that have mileage over the 100,000 miles. When you call vw, they refuse to help and do not care about the safety of the people that own their product. There is also issues with premature brake light bulbs and head light bulbs burning out.

When the vehicle was purchased new it drove perfectly no hesitation no problems what so ever. Over the past few months while backing out of a parking space I will put the car in reverse press the accelerator and the car will hesitate and then lurch backwards. This is a serious safety issue that occurs 1 out of every 25 times. Since it does not happen all of the time I really have know idea how my vehicle will react while backing. Also more recently occurring is while doing highway speeds and trying to pass a vehicle I will accelerate the vehicle and the transmission will slip into a neutral state. I will have to coast to the shoulder and re-start the vehicle. I have taken the vehicle to the dealer they had verified my complaints and ordered a new valve body (mechtronics unit) and advised me not to drive the car since it could be unsafe. Unfortunately, the part is on back order for 4-6 weeks and the only alternate transportation they could provide free of charge was a compact car. I decided to keep my vehicle until the part comes in hoping I will not have any serious problems. This is a major safety issue and a recall of this part is needed.
I just got my brand new 09 vw tdi sportwagon with the dsg transmission and it only had 298 miles on it, I was on the throgs neck bridge with my 20 month old twin girls, sophia and jessica and the transmission was slipping and then no power at all . I was stuck on that bridge for over 3 hours with my twin girls ! the tow truck finally came and towed the car to bayside vw.
The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta. While driving 75 mph the transmission slipped into neutral gear. A technician concluded that the transmission was performing normally. He then added that driving long distances in warmer weather conditions could cause the failure. The failure mileage was 42,000. The current mileage was 47,000. Updated 10/21/09. Updated 10/20/jb.
2001 vw Jetta vr6 for years my automatic transmission has occasionally slipped while shifting between 2nd and 3rd gears. Also, my gear selector slips between "d" and "3" without an resistance. A couple of days ago, with my car being regularly maintained, this problem became persistent. Now, every time the car shifts from 2nd to 3rd the car shifts/bucks very hard. Also, the gear selector easily moves from "d" to "3" and while in "3" the dash still shows the car to be in "d". I'm afraid this is going to drop my transmission while driving. I've asked two different dealers and one said nothing can be done, while the other said that is very common with this car because vw put poor automatic transmissions in these cars. I also have the crayon smell in my car that does make me and my passengers somewhat ill feeling. However, I'm more concerned with my transmission.
Transmission slips, doesn't grab when you first put it into drive. Shifts hard, between 1st and 2nd gears. Have almost backed into cars when in drive. Then I have to give it gas to move forward and almost hit car parked in front of me, with parallel parking. Also jumps really bad when I give it a lil gas sometimes, like at stop lights.
Our 2004 vw Jetta 1. 8t has had numerous problems from a clicking/popping noise in the front end at approxmiately 10,000 miles, to the transmission locking up while operating vehicle. The clutch/disc went completely out at 15,000 miles. All the interior and exterior lights went out as my wife was driving in the dark on a non lit back road to work, transmission locked up between 3rd and 4th gears, transmission still slipping, back door locks do not un-lock when remote is activated, service department has re-torqued everything on vehicle but this has not made problems go away. Since may 2005, the service department at local vw dealership has had my car fora total of 62 days for service and it is still not fixed. Problems continue to mount and the dealership for the most part states "that they cannot replicate the problem. " the dealership replaced all the wheel bearings in the front of the vehicle and this did not stop the clicking/popping noise, they replaced the clutch disc this did not clear up the problem, the electrical problem could not be replicated per dealership, the engine continues to have a whistling noise, transmission continues to slip. The driver's side leather seat has the seams pooping loose and a part of the frame is pushing through the leather. Trunk latch has been replaced 2 times. Dealership states car is safe to operate, I beg to differ!.
