1 Cooling Fan problem of the 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle

Failure Date: 07/09/2006

Almost too many to list O2 sensor at 20k miles - twice temp sensor for cooling fan ($5 part - $200 to install) at 30k miles ignition coils at 50k miles. Vw had initiated a "customer action" on all 1. 8l engines for defective ignition coils on vw and Audi models. Customer service action means nothing, cost me $600 without rental car added. They refused to acknowledge this press release when contacted directly. Water pump went south at 61k miles electronic control module went south at 61k miles also. Warranty covered still cost me $300 for rental car for 5 days. Timing belt damaged when water pump went. Voa will tell you to "check" it at 50k but it should last to 108k. Paid full labor even though engine was apart for pump work. Vw should be forced to honor the quality problems with this car. Nhtsa should investigate and force a recall on the coils, potentially the O2 sensor and definitely the ecm. The repair costs are insane. Ecm on this car is $1300 no labor. Current warranty on new is 60k. Mine went at 61k. 2001 warranty was 10/100 and 8/80. They know they have problems. Car is a lemon, contact lawyer too much hassle - they win again.

2 Cooling Fan problem of the 2006 Volkswagen New Beetle

Failure Date: 05/27/2006

A/c compressor or fan motor howls very loudly. Taken to dealer and dealer stated at first that they could not duplicate problem . Insisted they listen again since service writer could hear noise when we drove in. Then stated that car had too much freon in unit and that problem was fixed. Drove out of lot and howling was as loud as ever. Afraid compressor or fan will blow out of hood of car. The longer the car is driven the louder the howl becomes.

3 Cooling Fan problem of the 1998 Volkswagen New Beetle

Failure Date: 09/26/2005

The lock mechanism on the passenger side door of my 1998 beetle just fell out without warning. I discovered that it was missing and went to a repair shop to get it replaced, only to learn the this is a common problem with beetles because the lock is held in by only one tiny screw. This defect will cost me $350. 00 to repair, in a car that has only 50,000 miles on it. I also recently had to replace a fuse that powered the radiator fan because there is no early warning system in the car to indicate that the fan is not working. I was only aware there was a problem when the check-engine light came on, by which time there could have been extensive damage to the radiator. The fuse itself had gotten so hot it had virtually melted. This problem cost me nearly $370. 00 to fix. The mechanic noted that he had seen this happen with beetles several times because there is no temperature indicator on the dash -- you have no idea there is a problem until the check-engine light comes on.
