36 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2024

My clockspring is broken. I called the dealership to see if the warranty was done or if there was a recall, they said it was done. I don’t understand how it could have possibly been done when clockspring are not commonly broken. I am very upset I will be having to pay out of pocket for this.

37 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2024

I have contacted centennial vw in las vegas, nv about the recall in December 2024 and they said the part is still on back order.

38 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2024

The airbag light came on and shortly thereafter the steering wheel buttons stop working, the steering was stiff and harder to turn and ultimately the horn stop working. I feel driving a vehicle with a broken clock spring is extremely dangerous and is a safety issue.

39 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2023

The controls on the steering wheel have stopped working along with the air bags were disabled (the light is on). Sounds like the clock spring.

40 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2023

The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Passat. The contact observed that the air bag warning light was illuminated when the vehicle was started. The contact researched online and concluded that the warning light illumination experienced was possibly related to the failure articulated in NHTSA campaign number: 24v464000 (air bags). The contact called a dealer to explain the symptoms and the dealer advised that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 24v464000 (air bags). The vehicle had not experienced the air bag failure, and the contact expressed concerns that the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle manufacturer was not made aware of this issue.

41 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2023

The clock spring is out on the vehicle again.

42 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2023

Clock spring is broken air bag will not deploy which is a recalled component for some vehicles. Somehow my VIN is not on the list.

43 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2023

The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that while stopped at a yield sign, the contact was rear-ended by another vehicle. The contact stated that the air bags partially deployed upon impact which resulted in the contact hitting her head on the steering wheel. The contact later went to the hospital where she was treated for whiplash and a concussion. A police report was filed. Due to the failure, the contact could not use any of the electrical features on the steering wheel. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that her air bag failure was linked to NHTSA campaign number: 24v834000(air bags); however, once the recall was serviced, the contact was informed that the recall was related to the air bag inflator, not the actual air bag. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

44 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2022

Vehicle originally was taken in for a recall on the clock spring, now having the same issue again start up a couple months ago. The driver side airbag will no longer function under these conditions.

45 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 10/28/2022

While driving the vehicle and making a slow speed turn into a drive way, the wires in the clock spring portion of the driver airbag were severed mechanism. This has caused the car to no longer have airbags on the driver side of the car. Volkswagon has recalled some of the car in this model year, but they continue to say my vehicle is not affected. When this happened, I had less than 90,000 miles on the car. I am unable to fix this defect because of the cost and honestly, I shouldn't have to as volkswagon knows it's an issue and has made recalls of their cars, but they don't include my model year. This is wrong, as the issues I am having are the exact same as the current recall. The recall needs to be expanded to more cars in the 2014 model year. There is no way debris should be able to enter the clock spring area and sever the lines with normal use. This puts my safety at risk because if I am in an accident, I do not have airbag protection. I have not taken the car to a dealer as I cannot afford to, the vehicle has not been inspected, but if that would help, I can get it inspected, and there were no lights, lamps or messages that warned of any problems with my airbag system until the wires broke.

46 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2022

I’ve been try to contact the recall department for my air bag issued for 2years straight since I purchased the vehicle but no appointment has been set to fix the airbag recall.

47 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2022

The clocksping in the steering wheel is broken, but the part has been backordered for over a year. The broken clockspring makes the horn and buttons on the steering wheel unusable and the airbag will not deploy.

48 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2022

Airbag clock spring has broken but part is unavailable and has been on back order for over a year. I now do not have an airbag, horn or any steering wheel buttons. Couldn’t care less on the buttons but my concern is safety with the airbag and horn. Also it will no longer pass my states inspection. Volkswagen needs to fix this and now! part on back order for over a year and no expected time in near future is unacceptable for those in this position!! :(. They should realize some people will die instead of survive certain crashes without airbags working!!.

49 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2022

The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the air bag warning light remained illuminated. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 87,000.

50 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 04/27/2022

I belive the clock spring has malfunctioned on my car, the air bag light won't go off and the horn does not work. This has put my safety at risk because twice last week a car almost side swiped me and I have no horn. I called the dealer and they said my particular model isn't covered under the recall but it says Volkswagen Passat models 2010-2014. I have not taken my car to the dealership yet. The airbag light and horn stopped working at the same time about a month ago and I have replace the the fuse and relay switch and the air bag light is still on and the horn still doesn't work.

51 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2022

In 2022 I was in an accident on the highway; a dear hit my car while I was traveling at 70 mph. My airbags did not deploy and I ended up hitting my head on the driver side window really hard and it gave me a concussion and I injured one of the disks in my back. I almost got hit by semi trucks traveling behind me as well. Again, my airbags didn’t deploy after this and I’ve seen many recalls on the 2014 vw Passat specifically about the vehicles airbag deployment being that they’re also takata airbags that had major recalls too. They should’ve deployed on a head on collision. My insurance didn’t total my car but I have proof that the entire frame was bent from the accident and my entire front headlight, fender and bumper are smashed in and wires for my transmission were severed. I still haven't settled this claim yet. I’m considering getting a lawyer about it.

52 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2022

Clock spring has failed. Te vehicle has been inspected by the service dealership department and confirmed the prognosis. The clock spring failure prevents the airbag from deploying in an accident. It also controls the electronic components in the steering wheel blinkers, horn etc they also do not work. Airbag light came on and as I went to honk my horn at another car my horn did not work creating a safety hazard and almost causing an accident. Luckily I slammed on my breaks and no one was behind me. Immediately notified the dealership service department of problem they confirmed the clock spring has failed and told me the car is still driveable but comes with hazardous safety issues that may prevent saving a life in the event of an accident. For example no horn to alert another car, no blinkers to safely change lanes, if in an accident airbags won’t deploy etc.

53 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2022

The clock spring within the steering wheel has failed and is no longer functional. The airbag sensor warning light has come on. The horn no longer works, and I cannot warn drivers crossing over into my lane who may not see me in their blind spot. And as far as I understand, the main steering wheel airbag no longer works either. The idea that my main airbag system will not deploy in an event of accident is worrisome. I went to a dealership and informed them that its most likely a clock spring issue as I googled the issue; it’s quite common in their cars. They confirmed it for me, after taking a $139 ‘inspection’ fee which was no more than a tech scanning my car and checking the three main indicative problems I already reported to them. I was at about 120,090 miles at the time. I was informed that their clock spring warranty only covers up to 120,000 miles but was assured they will most likely be able to cover it after talking with the Volkswagen representative. It wasn’t covered. I was then told it would be another $600 to use their services, and the part would take a few weeks to come in. I later called the parts department as I did not want to pay an exorbitant labor fee; the inspection fee was insult enough. I was informed the parts department is five months backordered. So now, I’m either forced to pay for their service to get the part within a few weeks or wait five months from the parts department all the while driving with no horn or wheel airbag. I'm now forced to use their services, which run at a premium compared to normal mechanics, if I wish to have basic safety features on my car. This seems exploitative of the consumer on a safety problem that has persisted for years, and one Volkswagen is responsible for causing with their faulty manufacturing.

54 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2022

The recall listed on the previous page explains why visibility is so poor when low or high beams are on while driving, no matter what the weather conditions are. My safety, along with my family's safety, and oncoming traffic were put at risk due to such poor visibility. I don't have this problem with my other Volkswagen (2017 jetta). The other problem I encountered is with my steering wheel. I was turning and I heard what sounded like a crinkle type noise. It was rather brief so I didn't pay attention and then it made the sound again when I turned wheel in the opposite direction and again on my next turn. The following day I heard the same type of noise while turning in either direction and then the noise sounded like a spring breaking. I then noticed a light on my dash come on. The light was orange in color displaying a similar no seat belt wearing flash display. Once I was home I looked into what dash light meant and it had to do with an airbag malfunction. I went on to notice that none of my steering wheel functions worked nor did my horn. I researched possible recall involving steering wheel clock spring in a 2014 Passat and found it was indeed a recall. I purchased this car for my soon to be licensed son and he needs these recalls fixed as soon as possible in order to use car for his driving test in April. The nearest vw dealer is in green bay, WI which is a few hours away from my home. I was informed by a close friend that works for vw that recalls could be fixed by halbinsel Mazda in escanaba mi. My other vw is currently in storage and I am unable to get to it until spring time when the snow melts. This leaves me with the Passat with poor visibility and if I were to get in an accident the airbag wouldn't deploy because of clock spring recall nor can I warn anybody by honking my horn. Both recalls are putting myself, my loved ones and traffic at major safety risks. My vehicle is available for inspection, so matter can be resolved as soon as possible.

55 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2022

I was driving my vehicle under normal driving conditions (daylight, dry roads) and I was making a left turn onto another street from a completely stopped position. As I made the turn, the airbag warning light on my Passat came on. It remained on for the duration of my drive. When I got home, I discovered that my horn no longer works, nor do any of the wheel controls on the steering wheel. My safety is now at risk because if I am involved in a frontal accident, there is no airbag. I am also now unable to signal other drivers due to my lack of horn. I now have a solid illuminated air bag light on the dashboard. To my knowledge, this car has never had any items replaced in a recall, but it could have been part of a recall before we bought it from the dealer.

56 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2022

For the second time in the life of this 2104 vw Passat auto, the airbag clockspring, housed in the steering wheel has failed. The first date of service for this issue was 3/7/2019 and most recently was attempted on 2/22/2022. In both instances, the same symptoms occurred prior to the failure of this component. For a few days prior, there was a plastic crackling sound when turning the steering wheel. Then while backing out and turning the steering wheel, an audible snap/crack was heard, causing an inability to use the hands-free phone device, all steering wheel controls (including cruise control, volume, dashboard items), and an immediate lack of the car horn. Simultaneously, the air bag indicator light illuminated and the vehicle status stated "error: airbag". This error message appears each time the car is started. The inability to have a working car horn, steering wheel controls and driver airbag is a tremendous safety risk, in my opinion, so I ceased driving the car immediately and brought the vehicle to a local vw dealership for confirmation of the issue. The issue was reported, evaluated and confirmed to be needing part# 5k0953569al (air bag clockspring) on 2/22/2022. We were informed by (3) different vw dealerships and (2) private mechanics that there were over 1500 of these parts on backorder in February. Currently, as of 6/27/2022, there are twice as many backordered and the dealership service department that this car was purchased from says this has been the case for over (6) months. My vehicle is undrivable and will not pass upcoming inspection. It is unacceptable for vw corporation to not have a viable solution to this gross safety issue, while still putting new automobiles on the market, possibly with faulty parts and no foreseeable plan for those consumers, like me, that are in need of timely repairs. This vehicle is available for "inspection upon request" as it sits in the driveway, unusable.

57 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2022

Clock spring is broken, and no one has replacement parts. They have been backordered with Volkswagen for months. Air bag, horn, and steering wheel radio control do not work. Won't pass safety inspection.

58 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2022

The clock spring on this vehicle has failed which controls the driver side airbag, horn and all other buttons on the steering wheel. Apparently, there are almost 5,000 people waiting for this part to fix their car which most are under extended warranties since vw knows they have an issue with this part. I have made numerous calls trying to get this part and there is no end in sight as to when my vw dealer can expect it to get my car fixed. I find this unacceptable, and it sounds like vw is not even manufacturing this part and it could be months or even years before this is resolved. I will not drive my car without a horn or airbag. I am sure many people are driving around with this issue.

59 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2022

I adjusted my steering wheel with the lever used to do so and reverse my car out of my parking spot and I heard this like crunchy and crumbling crackling sound and it sounded like there was something wrapped around my steering wheel and I was like what the heck. . . So I turn the wheel clockwise and then back counterclockwise and then back again and kept hearing the noise but decided there was nothing I could do about it so I drove to my destination which was about 5 minutes away. I put my car in park and left it running went inside and made a payment and came back out and I put my car in reverse to reverse out of the parking space and all of a sudden there was this thing and an air light on my dash saying airbag air and all I could hear was this crunching crackling sound again like something was going to pop out. So I pulled my car back into the parking spot and I called my local Volkswagen dealer on Saturday around 4 only to find out that all technicians were gone for the day and wouldn't be back until Monday. So I called the 1-800 Volkswagen number for customer support and it was closed as well. So I drove my vehicle home and it's been parked because I'm scared to drive it because the airbag sounds like and feels like it's going to explode.

60 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2021

My clock spring went out in December 2021. Vw dealership acknowledged the problem and told me the repairs/part are covered under recall/extended warranty, but vw has a back order on the part. Meanwhile, I am without a drivers side airbag and a working horn almost 6 months later. I can’t even honk the horn to alert someone and prevent an accident. Vw could use aftermarket parts (aftermarket parts may work better), but they have refused. I am stuck with no airbag or horn and I can’t even trade the car in (except at the vw dealership) because it doesn’t have a working airbag. Super frustrated with Volkswagen!!.

61 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2021

The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10-15 mph and pulling out a of a parking lot, the air bag warning light illuminated. The contact stated that she continued to drive the vehicle and noticed that the horn and the buttons on the steering wheel would fail to respond when engaged. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

62 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 09/30/2021

A faulty clockspring in the steering wheel failed so the driver air bag and the horn do not work. The car can’t pass a safety inspection. This is a faulty part that the NHTSA issued a recall for some years back (I believe in 2015). The replacement part has been back order for upwards of 9 months for 1000s of vws in the us. If the cars cannot pass a state safety inspection there should be a safety recall issued immediately.

63 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2021

A few years ago I had my clock spring replaced as part of a recall. It just gave out again.

64 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2021

The airbag not working after recall, the dealer says the clock spring is bad. Cant order a new one bc they have been on backorder for over 9 months now.

65 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2021

None of the functions on the steering wheel of my 2014 vw Passat work. This includes the horn, the airbag and other functions on the steering wheel. This car is what my daughter uses for college. It puts her at risk and other drivers. She cannot beep the horn if someone is driving erratically, the air bag on the steering wheel does not work and sometimes the directionals do not work. This car will not pass inspection. Vw has not put a recall out on this part and after doing some research, many vw's are affected by this issue. What makes matters worse, is that she had the same issue in 2018. She had to travel to a vw dealer almost 50 miles away from her college campus to have the clock spring replaced to the price of $646 dollars. Now it's 2021 and the same problem is occurring. What is the matter with vw where they will not take responsibility for their cars.

66 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2021

1. Air bag clock spring (twice) 2. No horn, no airbag driver side safety issues. 3. Yes, twice confirmed by vw dealer 4. No other inspections, just vw dealer 5. No warnings of the issue until none of the controls were working - now an air bag light January 29, 2020 - 82227 miles, no air bag, no horn, no steering wheel controls. Brought to dealer - says there is a known issue with the clock spring and replaced it no charge. August 11, 2021, 123221 miles, no air bag, no horn, no steering wheel controls. Brought to dealer - says not covered. The first clock spring lasted 80,000, the second one even more faulty - lasted barely 40000.

67 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2021

Clock spring failure after recall.

68 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2021

I turned on my car and turned the wheel to leave my parking as I normally do every morning. I heard a crack and the steering wheel was not moving normally. Then there was an air bag error message as well as the horn and wheel button controls stopped working. I looked it up online and saw that there was a previous recall on this issue with this type of model. Though no current recalls came up. It has been an issue with vw Passats and it’s very unsafe. Never have had any issues like this happen in other cars. I had barely turned the wheel when this happened.

69 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2021

The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed that the air bag clock spring was damaged, and the clock spring needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact was relating the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 15v483000 (air bag). The failure mileage was 86,000.

70 Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2021

While driving steering wheel began to click. Next time driving the car, I had a error airbag reading and lost all control of the buttons on the steering wheel and horn doesn't work.
