The contact owns a 2003 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that the abs warning light illuminated when the brakes were applied and the front of the vehicle vibrated violently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the abs module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the vibrating continued. There was also a loud dinging noise followed by the warning light when the brakes were applied. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 87,452. My abs light on my 2002 Volkswagen Passat randomly comes on saying stop, brake default. There apparently is nothing wrong with my brakes. There could be a fix by replacing a $1600 part. After researching this, thousands of people have this same problem. Mechanics say nothing really wrong with the brakes. If it's indeed a sensor that everyone with this car has, then vw should repair it, so we actually know when something is wrong with the brakes!!.

My 2000 vw Passat v6 abs brake module has failed and I get the stop/abs lights flashing on my dashboard intermittently, along with warning beeps. This makes the car unsafe to drive and costs $1000+ to fix. Vw needs to recall these models immediately.

Abs light flashes on and off. Dealer says that it would cost over $1000. I just can't believe that such a safety system can I have such defects within it. Has anyone investigated this problem because I've seen numerous complaints about this online.

Abs light started blinking and beeping. Scan tool shows "unable to communicate with abs control module. " this abs blinking and beeping happens everytime I start my car now. When I attempt a panic brake stop, there is no pulsating from the brake pedal, which indicates the abs is not functioning. My 2000 Passat glx has 45,000 miles on the odometer.

Normal car operation. Abs lights came on - diagnosed as failure of abs control module. Abs brakes no longer work! vw wants $1600 for repairs. After some research determined it is a fairly common failure on my car, 2001 Passat that vw has yet to acknowledge or address.

After a few months, the contact noticed that the abs lights illuminated on the instrument panel. Through online research, the contact discovered several complaints on the same year, make, and model vehicle. An independent mechanic performed a diagnostic on the vehicle, but could not locate the specific cause of the failure. He was informed that if he depressed the brake pedal too hard, it could lock his wheel and result in a crash or he could lose control of the vehicle. The failure mileage was 47,000. Updated 09/16/08. Normal usage on the car. At ~75k miles, the emergency brake light, abs light, and traction control light blink and the dashboard beeps any time the car drops below 15 miles per hour. Abs module is faulty, due to defective design. Well documented issue on Passats of this era.

My abs light on my 1999 Passat 1. 8t comes on intermittently and stays on. When it does, the brake light also flashes. I can park my car overnight. When I restart it, it is off. After driving a short ways, it will come on again.

I drive a 1999 vw Passat sedan turbo. Out of no where one day my abs and brake lights started flashing, they are always on now everytime I drive and do not go off. I am worried something may be wrong with my brake system but do not have any more money to put into my car at the moment since I have put thousands in since it was purchased.

Abs module failure nothing lead upto the beeping and flashing of the abs light (solid lit) and brake light (flashing). Occured after routine driving, simply pulling into work parking lot as usual, after short trip to eating. After some searching and browsing online leads me to believe the abs module has failed as on many other Volkswagen/Audi models. Repair has not been done. Remanufacturing of module is around $200 and oem dealer replacement is said to be well over $1,000 dollars.

I have a flashing brake light that I understand could be a result of the abs module failure. Research shows that abs failure is very common and expensive to fix.

My 1999 Passat 1. 8l has abs and brake lights flashing intermittently with the chime coming on occasionally. There appears to be no degradation of braking but not sure if abs is working or not. The condition seems to correct itself, but then restarts again within 10 minutes.

Abs/brake light flashing; beeps initially when ignition is turned on. After having service center replace oil pressure sending unit, diagnosis determined to be failure of abs control module. Not aware of this occurring in any other makes, and learn from complaints within and from forums and other internet sites that this is a common problem in 1999 vw Passat. Oil light, now, also comes on when brake pedal is applied, but goes off when pedal is released. Oil pressure & pump okay, as is oil level, but source of oil light/brake pedal issue cannot be determined.

Abs and brake light go on and off with no rhyme. Dealer has quoted me $1500 to replace. It seems that it should be a recall with so many having the same problem. I will send to have it rebuilt then quickly sell car and not purchase vw again.

Abs module has failed. This is a very expensive repair ($1400 for the part (!) plus labor) for a safety-related feature. In checking around the internet I am finding out that this is apparently a very common problem with this vehicle (vw Passat, late 1990s models).

The contact owns a 2003 Volkswagen Passat wagon. While attempting to accelerate from 5 mph, the vehicle would not move forward and began to vibrate. The contact pulled over and noticed a burning odor coming from the brakes. When he touched the wheels, they were extremely hot. The vehicle had stability control, traction control, and abs. All four brakes were applied when he attempted to accelerate. The contact attempted to restart the vehicle. The abs light illuminated along with another light (he did not remember which light). After he allowed the vehicle to cool down and attempted to start the engine, all of the lights illuminated on the instrument panel. He continued to drive, but the failure recurred. He took the vehicle to a Volkswagen dealer in indiana and was instructed on where to find the fuse to deactivate the abs, traction control, and stability control. The service manager stated that they had seen audis experience the same failure with the same engine and features. The failure mileage was approximately 62,000.

While I was driving, my instrument panel starting flashing the "abs" light and beeping loudly, the information panel displayed "brake fault", then "stop" in large letters. I checked my brakes and they still worked. Then the beeping and display messages stopped, and the traction control light came on. The service advisor at the dealership told me that this is a known issue with the electronic control unit in 98-01 Volkswagen Passats. The hydraulic brakes still work, but the abs may fail to activate in a panic stop. The cost to replace the electronics is $876, and the new unit is not as prone to failure as the original.

Abs and brake warning light comes on and stays on. Message section displays stop, brake failure message. According to dealership, the abs module needs to be replaced. Price quoted was $1,000. Apparently, a very common problem with vw and Audi cars. Vw owes us a recall.
