Failure Date: 08/16/2017

The contact owns a 2016 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the contact overheard and abnormal noise as the oil warning light illuminated. The contact was approaching a hill and attempted to depress the brake pedal which failed to engage properly. The contact applied the parking brake to stop the vehicle. Prior to the failure, the vehicle had been taken to hiley Volkswagen of huntsville (6944 highway 72 w, huntsville, al 35806, (256) 882-0200) were the oil was changed and an oil consumption test was performed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact to take the vehicle back to the dealer for more diagnostic tests. The contact mentioned NHTSA campaign number: 15v705000 (engine and engine cooling, service brakes, hydraulic) as a possible solution to the failure however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.

3 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2017 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/16/2017

When coming of the freeway to an exit to the right I was already slowing down there was a vehicle parked in front of me about 1 car lengths away, it was waiting for a chance to merge off the exit ramp. I was already slowing down and I had the brakes pressed, my car was slowing down but it wasn't stopping and I pressed harder but it didn't stop. Then I hit the other car my vehicle stopped after the hit but as soon as the other vehicle moved forward to pull to side my car hit it again and my foot was still on the brake, I pulled my e brake and my car stopped. I reported the issue to my insurance company and the dealership because it is not normal for a brand new car after 6 mo tha of purchase to do that, especially since it had the collision braking thing were the car brakes for you if you get too close to another car. First the body work repairs were done on my car then my car was towed to the nearest dealership were they said they would take my car part to see what the issue was and I would be called when they found out what was wrong, I was called and told my car is fixed now and it is ready for pick up. I called the customer service line which then directed me to the regional manager who told me the reason my car didn't stop is because I have two floor mats and one slipped and blocked my pedal, which was clearly not the reason. I was tired of getting ridiculous answers and surprising right after all this happened my anti collision braking system starts working but not during any collisions but just regular driving. I complained about hat and my brakes again just recently and I wa stole that my brake pads are worn out and rotors as well and my tires. I bought the car brand new 2017 and it only has 28,000 miles on it. I don't even drive it crazy or harsh. I had to get my brake pads replaced and rotors.

4 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/15/2017

First off, the bread started giving me trouble a couple weeks after purchasing the vehicle. When I took the vehicle in to have it checked out vw of the woodlands exclaimed that there was no issue and that the brake pads had a few rocks in between them. As the weeks passed the issue gradually got worst and I could feel the brakes grind when I proceeded to come to a stop. Now the brakes are completely jacked up and I will have to pay out of pocket to have them repaired. My second problem is the electrical issue that I've encountered. This dates back to at least 3 weeks after buying the car. I reported the problem to them and have even taken the vehicle in to have it checked out, but yet again I was given an excuse. "your alternator needs to be changed!" I was told. I couldn't understand why the alternator was preparing to go out after only having the car for 5 months. But that was not the fixture of my problem. The dash board likes come on and goes off repeatedly iver time and I have been taking a picture each time it happens for my documentation. It's very unprofessional what goes on with these car dealerships and how they get over on people. This 2014 Volkswagen Passat is a bust and should be recalled.

5 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

My first week with this car and the brakes start to make the nastiest sound. It was as if it had no brake pads. I immediately called the dealership and asked them what was wrong with the car I suspected the brakes from the start. I had to take it in and they checked their site and it reported that on this model and year the cars came with a defect in the brakes. They had to replace them with new ones. 2 months later it starts up again. The bad thing is that vw never admits to their faulty cars. They set me up with high payments and wont help me with any of my concerns. The car is nice no doubt about it but why would I want to stay with a faulty car and high payments? makes no sense!.

6 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/30/2011

December 30, 2011, the engine emissions light came on. In addition, the brakes were slow to respond, especially in quick response situations, I. E. Traffic light. I took the car to pep boys for a diagnostic on brakes/emission. They said there were no problems. Cost $100. February 10, 2012, the engine emission light came on and the brakes were slow to respond especially in quick response situations, I. E. Traffic light. I took the car to a vw dealer/repair shop. They replaced the front brake rotors and pads and changed the brake fluid. I still experienced the brake problem during cold weather (below 15 degrees and wind chill). Vw suggested bringing the car in when the temperature was the same as the temperature that I experienced the brake problem. Unfortunately it was March and there were no further cold days. I began to think the car was a warm weather vehicle. Cost $776. December 14, 2012, the vw dealer/repair shop replaced the rear brake rotors and pads. Cost $377. December 26, 2013, the engine emission light came on and the brakes were slow to respond, especially in quick response situations, I. E. Traffic light. I took the car to a vw dealer/repair shop. They replaced hose and valve to correct a vacuum leak (valve stuck). They replaced the brake fluid. Cost $376. January 8, 2014, the brakes were slow to respond. I had to use the hand brake to stop. I called to have the car towed to vw dealer/repair shop. The tow driver stated it was a booster problem. The vw dealer/repair shop replaced brake booster and brake fluid. Cost $848. In addition to the brake problems, the belly pan (belly shield, skid plate, lower engine cover) came off twice while driving on major highways on April 21, 2012 and April 12, 2014. I had to pull over and pop the pan back up. I took the car to vw dealer/repair shops to have it reattached. No cost.

8 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/03/2008

1. Front and rear brakes inadequate for vehicle--had to have brake work at ~20,000 miles and again at just under 42,000 miles (this has never been a problem with any other car). Brakes repaired/parts replaced twice. Car should be recalled by manufacturer for brakes 2. Sunroof +/- windshield drain(s) became blocked and leaked and flooded passenger footwells, with risk of damage to transmission. This is a manufacturing defect with this make and model and has been widely reported on the web. Vw needs to recall cars for the problem with blocked drains/leakage and damage to vehicles. Cost to vacuum water out of footwells below the carpet > $600 with no guarantee that problem will not recur 3. Vw Passat has a known problem with sludge build up in engine and consequent engine failure--I have not (?yet) had the problem but feel that vw guarantee to repair problem only if owner can prove oil changes every 3000 miles in an unreasonable abnegation of duty. This is a design flaw and the company should have to recall all cars with the problem and repair at no charge without being able to shift blame to consumer. Now having to use expensive synthetic oil for oil changes on a very frequent basis.

9 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/20/2006

: the contact stated while driving 5 mph, the vehicle made a clanging noise while pulling into a garage. When the brake was depressed, the pedal went all the way to the floor, and did not engage completely. There was no indication of a problem prior to the incident. A private repair shop was consulted, and determined the rear brakes needed to be replaced. The brake pads were replaced, the tires were rotated, and the oil was changed. During the subsequent test drive, the vehicle stalled completely while traveling 25 mph. A service dealer was consulted by the private repair shop, and determined that the fuel pump had failed. The fuel pump was replaced. There was a NHTSA recall # 06v017000 which pertained to the fuel pump. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN.

10 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/14/2006

9/2003: headlights aimed incorrectly; road wasn't illuminated. Within 2 wks, 1 of the bulbs burned out. Within a week of the 1st, the 2nd bulb burned out. Never know if window will go up or down. 2004: had car in for (at least) 3 different dashboard warning codes. One had something to do with fuel, or the fuel tank or something. After some trial and error on my mechanic's part, discovered that unscrewing and tightly rescrewing gas cap fixed the problem. Cost to diagnose and "fix": $165. Had (at least) two other warning codes in 2004 that required me to take the car in. 6/24/2005: had been hearing crunching sound from front right portion of car that was particularly apparent when hitting a pothole, a dip in the road or attempting a tight 360 turn. Mechanic (specializing in european cars) identified a bad control arm. Cost of repair & alignment: $713. 70. Cost of rental car: $100. 88. Total: $814. 58. Note: the left side has been making the same sound since 12/2005. Have not yet repaired it. 10/24/car started going dead intermittently. The car had less than 60000 miles on it. Replaced battery for $106. 50. 1/2006: temp gauge maxed out, coolant boiled over, smoke & steam issued from hood in less than 8 minutes at idle. Cooled car for 2l hours, replaced coolant and drove to mechanic, who replaced thermostat, water pump & timing belt. Cost: $725. 2/2006: brakes are spongy and provide no resistance until nearing the floor. Mechanic says rotors and brake pads are fine. 6/2006: transmission gets stuck in 1st gear. Must stop the car, turn it off and then restart. This is an electrical problem and is governed by the computer. Cost to fix: unknown. 6/2006: front window now off track. Have not yet fixed it.

Failure Date: 02/01/2006

The contact owns a 2002 Volkswagen Passat. The rear brake pads wear out every 15,000 miles, which is about four times faster than a normal vehicle. This is unexpected on a vehicle with such low mileage and could cause brake failure. In February of 2006, at 25,359 miles, the dealer informed the contact of this possibility. He notified the manufacturer and they denied any knowledge of the failure. The current mileage was 39,722 and failure mileage was 25,359.

14 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/05/2005

At the 20000 maintenance inspection there was no observation done by the dealer. At about 22k the brake problem warning light came on and then off. I took the car at the dealer and they found that the back brake pads are almost completely worn off and they need to be replaced and the brake fluid needs to be flushed. The estimated cost was more than 350$. I asked them to give me an explanation on how the brakes got worn in the 2k between the 20k and 22k since they did not tell us anything about any brakes being worn at the 20 maintenance inspection. They had no answer on this. I finally decided to replace the back brake pads because the car was shaking on braking and I felt unsafe driving it. I did not trust the dealer any more so I decided to take the car to a third party shop I trusted, and I had to pay 138$ to replace the back brake pads.

15 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/22/2005

1. Normal driving 2. Rear brake rotor warp and excessive pad wear 3. 3 seperate incedenses of rear brake repairs. (there have not been any on the front brakes to date) 4 rear rotors and 3 sets of pads in 52,000 miles. The service manager at the dealer insists this is the normal wear pattern for the vehicle, especially the inner pad on the drivers side rear. . Vw of America is backing the stance that the dealer is correct. This has created an unsafe braking condition because th the brake pedal oscillates during all braking.

16 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

18 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/07/2004

Rear brake pads and disks worn out after 19000 miles. The front brakes are within spec. Dealer states it's normal for Passat, I don't think it's true. The front brakes are usually the first to engage, if needs a harder braking - then the rear brakes become active! did the vw re-invent the wheel??? obviously there is a design flaw or manufacturing defect. I've had japanese and american cars before - usually you have to service the rear brakes around 50k miles! as for the dealer - the service manager in this case - he conveyed some kind of nonsense just to get rid of me.

19 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/01/2004

My 2004 vw Passat had 13,823 when the rear brake pads completely wore out. The front have only worn out 8% to this day (12/20/04). First, the car pulsated when the brakes were applied. So, I personally went to the dealer to find out what the problem was; which was no help. I was told there was nothing worng. Later, to no suprise of mine; there was. The brake lamps turned on and didnt go off. Even with the car in park and turned off. With this, I went to the dealer who told me my rear brake pads were worn. At the dealers, the rear rotors were replaced for free, but the pads were not. This is simply disrespectful, as I am not a crazy driver and had to pay $220 to replace defective brake pads.

20 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/01/2004

We purchased a new Volkswagen Passat station wagon from livonia Volkswagen autoplex (now thayer automotive livonia, inc. ) in July, 2003. At 18,500 miles, the car developed a rattle in the under carriage and the brakes were squeaky. We took it to the dealer and their service department stated that the car has aftermarket brakes that fit differently from vw brakes, hence the rattle. However, these are the brakes that were on the car when they sold it to us. We have contacted vw of America customer service on three occasions regarding this issue. They contacted the dealership and were told by the service dept. That the brake pads appeared "too new" to have 18,500 miles on them (implying that we have had the brakes replaced). Based on this, vw of America states they will not authorize vw brakes to be put on the car. We have not had the brakes on this car replaced or serviced in any way, and have never had the car serviced anywhere but this dealership. Incidentally, the day after the 10,000 mile service, the windshield fluid reservoir was empty, and the day after the brake inspection a hubcap flew off. This may speak to the skill and integrity of this service department. We filed a complaint with the michigan department of state bureau of regulatory services who state that this matter was not in their jurisdiction because the dealership is no longer licensed by the state, and suggested we contact you. We bought this car in good faith, assuming, of course, that it was made of all vw parts. Apparently it is not. Currently, our new car has squeaky brakes, an increasingly loud rattle in the undercarriage, and a missing hubcap. Vw of America will not help us. The sales manager and owner of the dealership do not return our calls. We would like vw brakes on our vw car, assurance that everything else on the car is, in fact, a vw product, and a hubcap replaced. A family who buys a new car about once every twelve years would appreciate help.

22 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/10/2003

Brake failure at 22,000 miles. My car was just under 2 years old with 22,000 miles when I was told that I needed new rear brakes. The car was redesigned with "soft" brake pads to reduce noise, so this is considered "normal wear". No it isn"t! also, the rotors must be replaced when you put on new pads; they cannot be machined. This car is designed to have pads and rotors replaced every 22,000 miles! this is unacceptable service and disgraceful design.

23 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/07/2003

Wet weather braking. . . Same as other complaints. There is a significant delay in braking response in wet weather. Once the brakes 'grab' stopping is not a problem; I've learned to brake early. The problem seems to be reduced if you try to frequently touch the brakes, I'm assuming this clears water build-up from the rotors/pads. Is this a problem with the open design of the alloy wheels or is the disc/rotor guard that sits behind the wheel becoming filled with water? fyi, I have a 2000 Passat 4motion glx wagon.

24 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/27/2002

The rear brake pads and rotors were replace at 25,000 miles and again at 50,000 miles. I feel that brake pads (especially rotors) should last more than every 25,000 miles. I'm approaching 75,000 miles and am anticipating whether or not I will be replacing pads and rotors once again!.

25 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/10/1999

Consumer took vehicle to dealer due to brake light warning on the instrument panel coming on, the dealer informed him that the brakes were ok, later dealer informed consumer that rotors were worn and that the rotors and brake pads needed to be replaced, consumer feels dealer should be responsible for paying for the defective brake rotors and pads.

26 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Oil line broke while driving. Also, abs/master cylinder malfunctioned, causing the entire abs system to be replaced. Vehicle was not braking properly when brakes were applied. In addition, had pads replaced twice/needed a new booster installed, and sun roof was replaced because it leaked and made a squealing noise.

29 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

I have been advised that both front brakes require new rotors although pads have not worn through. Given the mileage, this seems like a defect. The manufacturer has declined to assist as the vehicle in no longer under warranty.

30 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

The consumer took the vehicle to be serviced because the brakes were making noise, the dealer said the brakes were ok, at 22k miles consumer was told that the brake rotors and pads had to be replaced. Nlm.
