7 Brake Electric Antilock problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 05/05/2006

I am one of an already large and constantly growing number of persons with Volkswagen's and Audi's who have abs (automatic braking systems) that have stopped working after only a mere 60-70,000 miles. I have taken my car in to the dealer several times to resolve this issue and each time they (deal) say it's something else. With many people complaining now and more to join in as the days go by, one can only imagine the large quantity of other people who have this snafu. Our experience has been that vw/Audi appears to refuse to acknowledge the problem. Lately, several persons have said that the problem is generally being caused by the electrical unit in the abs module. Yet at this point, vw and Audi are having users replace the entire unit. This cost is prohibitive for many of us ($2000 upward in my case). In the meantime, many of us are having to drive with faulty abs systems, with resultant safety problems: for me, the abs problem causes the brakes to go on at inappropriate times. The brakes on my car grab and activate unexpectedly during the first several minutes of driving after my car has sat overnight. Others have experienced this too. I fear that this may cause an accident. This problem on my car seems to be growing worse. The more obvious safety hazard is that all of these cars lack the abs during crucial times of driving on icy or wet pavement. Again, this problem is aggravated when the abs goes on and off intermittently, without the driver's knowledge (since in many cases, the dash warning lights remain on throughout). At this point, I'm fearful whenever I drive my car.

8 Brake Electric Antilock problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/05/2006

Purchase 2006 Passat with 4 wheel motion in Feb 2006. Approximately 6 weeks later engine light came on. Took to dealership where they took out the gas tank to repair vacuum problem. Then there was groaning when I turn the wheel left and right. Took to the dealer and they replaced brake parts. It is now three weeks later and I still have brake problem. The car now groans when ever I turn right, left or straight. Especially loud in stop and go traffic. I fear that the brake system is unsafe. Dealership showing no concern. I am on my second attempt to fix the brake. I will contact a lemon law lawyer if this fails.

17 Brake Electric Antilock problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/15/2005

I drive a 1998 Volkswagen Passat. After about 2 weeks of annoying warnings that something was wrong with my abs system I took the carto my independent mechanic. He hooked a scanner up to it and checked the brake system all day, and found nothing wrong with the car, other than the fact that the brake fluid was overfilled. He fixed that minor problem, but did not fix the original issue. After another week, I finally broke down and took the car to the dealer - heritage Volkswagen on reisterstown road in owings mills, MD. They hooked a scanner up to it as well, and found that I needes a new abs control unit. This was a part that, they said, would cost $3,000 just for the part! after doing my own research, it seemed this was one of many Volkswagen Passats that experienced the problem, but every one was being charged $1,500 for the part. This ought to be a class action lawsuit against Volkswagen of America, and heritage Volkswagen ought to be investigated for overcharging their customers.

Failure Date: 02/14/2004

Ignition coils failed two times, resulting in loss of power and causing vehicle to shudder. Coils were supposedly replaced. On a separate occasion (following the coil repair) vehicle completely shut down on the interstate- going from 80 to 0 mph in the matter of seconds. I had already been driving the vehicle for over an hour. I lost all power and was barely able to get the car to the shoulder. Problem was diagnosed as bad gas (not possibly the coil). In addition, my rear door quit closing, headlights have burnt out, filters have gone bad causing front of car to become flooded, vacuum hose defective, rear brakes went bad, and radio quit working. Parts were replaced either under the warranty or out of my pocket. Vw refuses to admit there is a problem with this car. I have approximately 40000 miles on it.
