Failure of anti-lock brake system control module on 2000 1. 8 t Volkswagen Passat with 90k miles. The failure is a problem with the abs control module. Requires replacement. Intermittent failure at first, that increases over time. Brakes will not function as anti-lock brakes. Brakes will still function, but may lock up in the event of hard braking, increasing stopping time and potentially causing unnecessary collisions. To correct this failure, the abs control unit must be replaced. Part number (Volkswagen) 8e0998375g. Cost to replace this unit is high at dealer the cost for replacement is quoted at $1100.

2000 Passat abs control module has failed.
Out of the blue, my car starts "dinging" and I look down to see the abs light on, along with a flashing brake light. I did a search and the first thing I see is that you should check the sensors at each tire. This makes me think about the fact that just before my problem occurred, I had just had my tie rod ends replaced. Was wondering if maybe the sensors had been damaged/broken when those things were replaced, but who knows. Doubtful that the mechanic that did that work would own up to that anyways. Upon more research, everyone is pointing to the abs control module and quoting anywhere from $100-600 for rebuilt modules to $1500-3500 for brand new ones. My husband wants me to drop the money on something that's not guaranteed to work. There are so many complaints, thought I'd add to this with my own complaint. I'm calling Volkswagen Monday to see what they're going to say.

2000 Passat 4 motion bosch 5. 3 abs module has failed. 82,000 mi.
Abs alarm goes on with increasing frequency. Says that there is a brake fault. Brakes are apparently fine, but the problem is with the anti-lock braking system (abs) electronic control unit. When this alarm is on, the abs may not be working. Many people report the same problem in vw's and Audi's.

Abs module failure. Code is 18057 p1649 data bus powertrain: missing message from abs ecu. I own a 2000 Volkswagen Passat, with 59,100 miles on it. The abs light comes on everyday periodically. The part has a high price. I believe the part should be replaced at no charge because it is a safety problem that should not occur. Due to this failure, I do not trust my brakes in case of an emergency.
Abs module failure. Was driving shortly after having front end work done and light when on. This happens intermittently while driving. Braking is affected.

The contact owns a 2000 Volkswagen Passat. While driving approximately 15 mph, all of the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. Prior to the abs warning indicator illuminating, the contact heard a beeping noise. The warning indicators remained lit until the engine was turned off. The contact stated that the vehicle was operating properly at the time. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician stated that the failure was related to the abs control module. The vehicle was repaired. The contact was concerned of the safety risk involved. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 75,000 and current mileage was 85,000. Updated 11-19-08 the abs module failed. Updated 11/20/08.
Abs control module failure.
Lit abs warning light and flashing brake light. On a 2000 GLS Passat as a result of a faulty abs module.
Abs module on my 2001 vw Passat failed. This was a $1000 repair and after reading hundreds of threads about other Passat abs modules failing, something should be done about this and vw should recall this part and give people their money back who have already paid for the repair!.
The abs control module is dead on mt 1999 vw Passat. This renders the abs useless. This is a known problem with the Passats. I just hope they have a recall because it is big dollar repair.
I have a 2001 vw Passat, in the past month, my abs warning light, and e-brake light, have been coming on randomly. The abs light comes on and then the brake light flashes and beeps/rings for a few seconds. Half of the time the lights go out after a few seconds, sometimes the only way they go out is to stop, turn the car off and restart. And there are times when this doesn't work either. There have been suggestions by vw dealerships to replace abs control module which is approx, $1350-1400. After researching this seems to be a problem that thousands of vw owners are experiencing with their vehicles. The replacement of control module has not corrected problem, neither has replacing ignition switch.
2000 vw Passat ebtcm (abs module) failure @ 80k miles.
Many Audi and vw models manufactured starting in the later '90s and continuing to present, use the bosch 5. 3 abs controller, which is prone to catastrophic failure, ostensibly due to defective design. This module controls multiple brake-related functions including the abs which is important for winter driving, but the most critical function of this module is probably the electronic brake force distribution, or ebd. These vehicles are designed such that if the ebd is inoperative, the proportion of hydraulic force applied to the rear brakes during emergency braking is as great as it is during moderate braking effort when there is minimal transfer of vehicle weight to the front wheels. The ebd is supposed to adjust the front/rear braking distribution dynamically according to the measure of the deceleration, so that the rear wheels will not lock up during emergency braking. If this module should fail during emergency braking on dry pavement, the rear wheels could lock up and cause an accident which could easily include fatalities. This is an expensive repair for owners, costing roughly $2000, and many owners have probably put off the repair indefinitely. Evidence which can be found through a simple web search, suggests that the problem is widespread, and that if it has not already led to serious accidents, it is only a question of time. This problem is genuine, and vw/Audi should be compelled to take immediate corrective action.
The abs control module failed on my car causing the abs system and the asr (anti-slip regulation) traction control systems to no longer function. This happened without warning with no signs leading up to the failure. This has also caused other strange electrical issues where my keyless entry will no longer work. Also, the error lights continue to flash on the instrument panel and the radio remains turned on (unless I manually turn it off) even after the car has been turned off and the key has been removed from the ignition. This caused a dead battery after 4 days of flashing (radio was off). It has also caused an error between the communication paths from my transmission control module (tcm) and my engine's ecu and instrument panel as evidenced by the error codes produced. The last issue that has been caused by the abs failure is that the car continues to run for several seconds after the ignition has been turned off and the key has been removed. It will then sputter out and turn off. . Read more...

Abs warning light flashes and beeps intermittently. Dealership diagnostics show abs module needs replacement. Dealer quotes $1400 for repair.
My car has been recalled 3 times, to which I adhered. Two months after my extended warranty expired, with 45,000, the abs sensor module failed. I don't believe it's failed as the dash board lights infrequently return to normal state; with no indication of problem, only to return to abs, brake failure, stop, service manual, lights flashing. Vw of America offered $300 towards a $1024. 00 repair only to retract offer when I voiced I could not buy another vw nor recommend to anyone.
Abs module failure nothing lead upto the beeping and flashing of the abs light (solid lit) and brake light (flashing). Occured after routine driving, simply pulling into work parking lot as usual, after short trip to eating. After some searching and browsing online leads me to believe the abs module has failed as on many other Volkswagen/Audi models. Repair has not been done. Remanufacturing of module is around $200 and oem dealer replacement is said to be well over $1,000 dollars.
While driving my 2000 vw Passat 1. 8t, a brake fault was identified on the display screen and the abs light came on. I brought the car to a dealership who said their computer couldn't communicate with the control module and it would take hours to troubleshoot the reason. They suggested a brake flush and I agreed. I almost ended up in an accident on my way home when I needed to stop quickly and my brakes needed to be fully pressed to the floor before the car began to decelerate. I have had nothing but difficulties having this issue addressed. To my surprise, this is a widespread issue. More to my surprise is the fact that there has been no recall; I am disappointed in vw and agencies protecting our safety on the road.
While driving on the freeway, my 1999 vw Passat's abs light lit up and the brake light flashing in the instrument cluster follow by 3 loud beeps. I later bring it to an auto mechanic shop and was told that my abs module does not work any more. The mechanic further stated that this is a normal occurrence with vw abs system.
Abs lights on, oil light, brake light on. Diagnosed as failure of abs control module.
Abs module is faulty, resulting in no abs braking system.
Abs system failure. A warning is dispayed on the instrument panel that there is a brake fault and the abs system warning light is also illuminated. This occurs intermittently but with greater frequency when the ambient temperature is above 60 deg f. Below 60f the warning only appears after the vehicle warms up. Above 75f the warning displays as the vehicle is started from cold. Between 60f & 75f the occurrence is more random. The abs system works before the warning is displayed but does not work after the warning is displayed. Once displayed the warning remains for the remainder of the journey and until the vehicle cools down. Estimates to replace the abs unit are approx $1500 plus fitting.
Abs/brake light flashing; beeps initially when ignition is turned on. After having service center replace oil pressure sending unit, diagnosis determined to be failure of abs control module. Not aware of this occurring in any other makes, and learn from complaints within and from forums and other internet sites that this is a common problem in 1999 vw Passat. Oil light, now, also comes on when brake pedal is applied, but goes off when pedal is released. Oil pressure & pump okay, as is oil level, but source of oil light/brake pedal issue cannot be determined.
Car abs brake module quite working causing tires to lock up and lose control of vehicle.
This regards a 1999 Volkswagen Passat 1. 8t wagon @ 97,500 miles. Beginning 03/20/2007 the abs and brake warning chime and light on the dashboard suddenly came on and then off again. The vehicle was inspected by two separate mechanics. The abs and brakes are working properly, but the abs control module is faulty causing the warning chime and lights to intermittently come on and off. The warning chime and lights come on and off again at least once daily, some days repeatedly and at random. The cost to replace the abs module is $900. Research on the internet proves that this is quite a problem with Passat and comparable Audi vehicles, many with much less mileage. I have placed a call with Volkswagen of America, but they refuse to acknowledge that a problem exists with the module. The cost is quite excessive for a problem that continuously causes concern for the driver and is a pure annoyance. Can anything be done to remedy this situation?.
Abs module in operative abs system.
- the contact took the 2001 Volkswagen Passat to a dealer, and they stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. All 8 tie rods and the one link arm were showing excessive wear. The dealer and the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was out of warranty so the repair would be at contacts expense. The current and failure mileage were both 79200. The right outer cv boot was torn and the left outer tie rod end was worn. The abs control module was replaced. Updated 03/30/07.
My 2001 Passat is having brake problems. The abs and brake light blink and there are 3 beeps. The screen on the dash says brake failure and service manual. Now right now if something where to happen to my actual brakes I would not know and I believe that could be serious. I have read many sites and have found that this is a problem that a lot of people who are experiencing. Also, I have been experiencing stalling problems due to the abs module. Vw has said that it will cost around $1500. I personally don't have $1500 to just go out and spend nor do I feel like I need to due to the research I have done on this problem. . Read more...
2000 vw Passat with ~72000 miles. Abs control module has failed. Vw says it will costs ~$1400 to repair. Internet research indicates this is a common problem which many vw owners are experiencing. Long past time to investigate whether a recall is warranted.
: the contact stated the abs brake light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the service dealer, who replaced the abs module.
The anti-lock braking system failed on my vehicle. The abs and brake lights came on to warn me so I took it into the dealership. I was told that the abs control module had failed and would cost me $1500 to repair. There are hundreds of posts online about this exact problem with Passats - in particular abs bosch 5. 3 ,5. 4, 5. 7 control modules.
2001 vw Passat, 1. 8l 4 cylinder. At 89,000 miles on my odometer, I am now receiving a stop, brake fault, see service manual warning, with the abs warning light also. In reviewing the vw owners forums and other information online, it seems this is a likely failure of the abs control module -- which is said to cost $1,500 for the part alone. This is said to be a fairly common issue. . . .
I've spent over $8000 towards vw dealership attempts at fixing the horn, radio, homelink, climate control (a/c and heat) rear passenger side window, heated seats, dashboard panel lights, and defroster flap. Vw replaced abs and brake light module, but only fixed the horn. Vw stated they are not responsible even after I paid for them to fix the above problems and they are still unable to determine the cause of the problems. I request reimbursement from Volkswagen for the repair attempts and related expenses. Current vehicle mileage: 127,000.
