Brake lights remained on without brake pedal pressure, and remained on after turning off ignition. I investigated prior recalls and saw: report receipt date: Feb 20, 2007 NHTSA campaign number: 07v063000 component(s): exterior lighting I went to local vw for recall repair and was told that brake light repair was already performed in 2004, so this repair was no longer covered. ( I am second owner, so could not confirm. ) a 2004 repair on a 2005 model year car for a recall issued in 2007? the brake switch replacement cost $176. Is this not the same recall failure again? I have had many cars and have never had a single brake light switch fail, except for this vw, which as of today has had three! (original, 2004 replacement and now 2013 replacement. ) is the recall still in effect? should I have to pay for an obviously defective part replacement?.

Our 2004 Passat's brake lights went out recently. There was no warning light or other process that told us the lights were out. We were almost in a car accident because the driver behind us didn't see our brake lights. After doing research I found that vw issued a recall for the brake light switch in 2007. . . But we never received such notice. I think this is a serious safety issue that should be communicated to the public.

I received a recall notice regarding my 2004 vw Passat (replacing the brake light switch). I had my repairs completed at an authorized vw service center in October 2007 and sent my form to vw for reimbursement. I received a call on 1/10/08 informing me that the deadline for the repair was 9/23/07. The recall letter I received was dated September 2007 and did not indicate that there was a deadline for the repair. The vw customer care center is saying that they will not reimburse me for this repair.

Brake light switch: my brake lights stay on when my foot is not on the brake. This leaves the potential for an accident. I called my dealer and they told me my car was not covered under the current recall. I looked at this web site and it describes the very same symptoms that my car is exhibiting.

Break light switch stopped working unknowingly.
6/30 I drove my 2004 vw Passat wagon. I had used the cruise control and had to slow down, I attempted to re-activate the cruise control, it would not respond. I tried again the following day and it worked. 7/3, I parked my car for an hour appt. I returned to my car to find the brake lights were on. I turned the car on, tapped the brakes and turned it off. The brake lights stayed on. I had to leave town for a few days and upon returning, called my dealer, ontario vw. 7/9 I made an appt to service the car. Sylvia in service made the appt. She mentioned there was a recall on the brake light switch. After making the appt, I researched the recall. I found the NHTSA site. Nhtsa had a campaign id # 07v063000 for 6 makes of Volkswagen, varying years, all for brake light switch malfunction. The description matched my problem exactly. Later on the 9th, I went to drop off my car for repair. I was checked in and told my car was not affected by the recall. Jose meza, senior service advisor, told me my VIN # had no recall. I explained about the info I found and he said I was incorrect. He did not offer to research anything about it. My car is under warranty and will be repaired. My issue is with the handling of this situation and the lack of interest on the part of ontario vw and vw corp, whom I called to complain and was also told that my VIN # did not reflect a recall. If 5 other vw makes have the same problem and are under recall, why am I being challenged about including my car in the recall? this is a serious safety issue as the brake lights can become inoperable without my knowledge. Vehicle safety should be the priority for all manufacturers and dealerships and I am shocked at the lack of interest I am receiving from all I contact about this issue. Including the NHTSA that told me I could file a general complaint and possibly be included in a future recall but could not offer specific help with anything else.
On occasion the brake lights will stay on after car has been parked and turned off. The brake lights will also stay on with no foot pressure on the pedal while driving.
Brake lights will not go out even after car is off.
Brake switch light failure. My first indication of failure was the brake lights remained on after shutting down the car. I pumped the pedal and this extinguished the light. The car continued to operate normally for another 500 miles until I noticed the cruise control was out. I then noticed the brake lights were not operating at all. After researching the problem I found that this is a common problem with vw's. To my surprise though the Passat which uses the same switch other vws have been recalled on has no recall yet. This switch is a very dangerous switch as it disables the brake lights providing no warning to another driver behind the car.

The brake light switch on my 2003 volswagen Passat had failed sometime before I purchased the car. It was purchased on April 23, 2007. This failure caused the brake lights not to light when the brake was pressed and the cruise control not to function. The car was repaired at a cost of $129. 00 using a replacement brake switch.
2003 vw Passat glx 4 motion brake lights stuck on, drains battery when parked, unsafe to drive as no indication of braking to others. Recall for this component on other models, not this one. Clearly defective--many other owners affected. . Read more...
- the contact owns a 2003 Volkswagen Passat with a current mileage of 52,000 miles. The brake lights were not functioning, after checking the fuse the contact found no failure. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, livingston Volkswagen, and the brake light switch was replaced. The contact had to pay for the repair, but was told by the manufacturer before going to the dealer, that it would be free. When the contact called the manufacturer back he was told that the vehicle was not under recall.
My vehicle, a 2003 vw Passat is not currently included in your campaign 07v063000. It should have been. I have had the brake light switch replaced (and charged to have it replaced) twice over the last year and a half. I experienced all of the consequences identified in your summary description. Most frequently the brake lights would stay on while driving, as well as would remain on once parked in my garage. How do I get the Passat's included?.
The contact owns a 2003 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that his vehicle is experiencing the same failure as noted in recall number 07v063000 (exterior lighting:brake lights:switch). The manufacturer stated that his vehicle was excluded from the recall. The contact paid to have the brake light switch replaced and feels that his vehicle should be included in the recall. The current mileage was 90,000 and failure mileage was 81,000. Updated 02/08/08.
Brake light switch failed intermittently over a period of two years, finally failed completely. Whenever the switch was operating poorly it kicked out the cruise control.
I have a 1999 vw Passat with a faulty brake light switch. Vw recently recalled 790,000 cars (but not the Passat model) for free replacement. My repair shop and several web sites verify that this is a common problem on the Passat also. The problem causes the brake lights to not function which could lead to a rear impact crash. I had the switch replaced at a cost of $110. I feel vw should extend it's recall to all models with this problem and reimburse those who have already had the switch replaced.

Brake lights will not go out.
: the contact stated while stopped at a stop light, none of the brake lights on the vehicle illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a service dealer, who was able to determine the cause of the problem. The manufacturer was also notified. There was a NHTSA recall # 04v096000, which pertains to the brake lights switch. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the model of the vehicle. Updated 12/18/2006 - the new brake light switch was installed on 11/28/2006.
Radio not functioning, air conditioning unit works intermittently, airbag malfunction recognized, operation unit in steering wheel malfunctions, no communications with brake control unit, brake light switch causes drivers side brake light to malfunction. Horn not functioning nearly caused 2 accidents within a month. I drove over an island to avoid one collision from the other non-attentive driver and ended up scraping the transmission pan. Cost of replacement: $550. After thousands of dollars in repairs and diagnostics, vw dealerships still unable to fix any of the above!.
The brake light should be extended to Passat models (ours is 1999). We have had the brake light staying on, triggering the abs light to come on also. After 3 ace mechanics review the problem, they isolated it to the same problem than the recall from Volkswagen announced today. This problem was actually identified more than 3 months ago and we don't know if a brake problem occurred how it will show since the light is always on.
I have a 2002 vw Passat. In October 2006, with approximately 50000 miles on the car, the rear brake lights suddenly stopped lighting up at all. My mechanic replaced the brake light switch, and now my lights operate normally. Vw has a recall on this exact issue for other models, but not on the Passat. In my case, it seems obvious that my 2002 Passat should have been included as part of this recall as well. If this is a known problem with vw models in this year, I'm disappointed that I had to drive without brake lights (when the switch first failed), then pay out-of-pocket to fix a known failure.
Cruise control and rear brake light failure on 2004 vw Passat.
My brake light switch went out and I didn't know I didn't have brakes until someone at a light told me. Who knows how long I've drove around like that. And it seems very odd that so many other people have had this problem too. I own two vw's (2003 Passat & 2004 golf), both have had this switch failure. The 2004 was replaced/fixed under warranty; the 2003 was not under warranty & costs were exorbitant. The service dept and service managers both admitted that this is a very common problem and oftentimes their mechanics will break the new switch while installing it. I broke two switches myself attempting a simple install. What was done to correct the failure was that the switch was replaced & yes I have both the original broken part, plus another newer revision of the switch that I personally broke, plus the now working switch installed in both vw's.
The brake light stays on even after I shut off the car, get out, and lock the door. There has been a jetta recall for this problem, but when I called the manufacturer to ask about the issue in regard to Passats, I was asked for my VIN, then told that there was "no campaign" (I. E. No recall) for my car at this time. Further, I was told that they did not know of this being an issue for Passats. Yet I just ran a google search on the problem and saw bulletin board postings from other Passat owners who have had this problem. If it's dangerous for jettas, it's also dangerous for Passats. Vw did this before with another safety recall--same kind of corporate irresponsibility, waiting until the NHTSA got involved. This is unconscionable! again, if the situation is dangerous for jetta owners, then it's dangerous for Passat owners who are clearly having the same problem!!.
Twice, the rear brake lights remained on uncontrollably - intermittently at first, then permanently. This failure was trouble-shot and repaired by the dealer both times. In each case, the brake light switch had failed. From studying the switch part numbers, it appears the suffix has also twice changed to a later version - although I don't believe they were installed in that order in my car (see pn's below). I believe I have the latest version currently installed. This is an unacceptable failure mode, as it not only is a safety issue (driving around with brake lights continuously on, but if left on for prolonged period, the rear brake light bulb sockets get extremely hot and in my opinion have a good chance to melt the plastic socket/reflectors and possibly catch fire. More importantly, the abs and cruise control become inop, the throttle body alignment is disturbed causing the car to behave terribly on acceleration and many cel-type light illuminate on the instrument panel. Failures occurred: 1st time: @ 34540mi, 4/7/2005. 2nd time: @ 49,746mi, 5/24/2006. Orig s/w pn 3b094551a (from factory). 2nd s/w/1st replacement pn 3b0945511_ (assume basic pn), 3rd s/w/2nd replacement pn 3b0945511b). I have never had to change the brake light switch on my 1984 vw scirocco - I'm the original owner and had driven it over 174k miles! a failed brake light switch on this Passat has much greater impact (lights, abs, throttle, cruise control) when it fails than it would on the scirocco (just lights), and it was the Passat brake light s/w that failed twice - due to poor design/reliability. Amazing and unacceptable.
Car brake light switch failure.
The brake light switch keeps failing. It causes the electronic stability control to be disabled and keeps the stop lights on, even when the brake pedal is not depressed. I've had the brake like switch replaced 6 times now over the past 2. 5 years.
2003 Volkswagen Passat consumer request for early termination of the lease. ** answer required***. The consumer made the request due to the numerous mechanical problems such as a defective purge valve, right front head light, the vehicle overheated and started t o smoke due to a faulty water pump. The brake light would not shut off and the right head light went out for the second time. The brake light switch was replaced. The cruise control would not disengage. The vehicle would not start at times.
- the contact stated that while driving the 2003 Volkswagen Passat with 7000 failure mileage the brake lights intermittently turned off. Also, the driver's side front headlight turns off, the rear passenger side window, and the horn did not operate. The vehicle was taken to a dealer several times, but they still could not determine the cause of the problems. The current mileage was 105,944.
Brake failure light appears even after multiple brake repairs. Driver?s side rear upper brake light replaced for 29th time in less than 2 yrs. Multiple coolant leaks still present even after repair and water pump replacement. Radio/amplifier not functioning even after replacement (radio was only used twice in vehicle?s lifetime). Diagnostics show airbag malfunction. Regulator pin on rear passenger side window keeps breaking (3rd replacement since 2003). Engine cover below car keeps falling off due to rusted bolts. Homelink system keeps malfunctioning. Fuses keep blowing out. Dashboard panel lights out (odometer, fuel gauge, etc. ). Ccm module keeps breaking down. Car needs to be jumpstarted when not in use for over 48 hrs. Climate control (a/c and heater) works only sporadically. All repairs performed by vw dealership, yet same issues keep reappearing just a few weeks after repairs. Repairs performed in past 2 years: ecu unit replaced, brake light switch replaced 3 times, a/c compressor unit replaced, abs module replaced, alternator replaced, brakes replaced 3 times.
2005 vw Passat with recall for a brake light switch. Consumer took the car overseas. He states that they will not honor the International warranty for the brake light switch. The dealer stated they were not having the problem in europe.
